Protests ignored as Madrid unites court and catwalk again
By Mark Hodgkinson
(Filed: 12/10/2005)

Organisers of the Masters Series tournament in Madrid, which starts in the Spanish capital on Monday, have decided to repeat last year's stunt of using provocatively dressed models as ball girls, a move that will add glamour to the event but also provoke controversy and criticism.

Andy Murray would undoubtedly have appreciated the models, but he was forced to turn down the offer of a wild card into the qualifying event for Madrid as he was already entered into next week's Challenger tournament in Denmark.

He has since withdrawn from the Danish Challenger because of his damaged hamstring, but he indicated last night that he would be "OK" for the ATP Tour event in Basle the week after next, for which he has a wild card into the main draw.

By employing the models for a second year, the Madrid Masters organisers have ignored strong objections from several senior Spanish politicians. Last year, Soledad Murillo, the minister for equality, wrote to the tournament director, the sponsor for the models, and the Madrid mayor demanding that the "sexist" practice be stopped.

Last season the models were required to wear slashed skirts and tight-fitting tops as they fetched the stray balls and handed towels to the players, and it is unlikely that the clothing sponsors will suddenly have come over all demure with this year's outfits. The politicians argue that the models are an example of "machismo" culture in Spain.

But the tournament organisers do not see the use of the models as demeaning or frivolous. "The initiative with the models was launched with success last year and the organisers are determined to continue with the idea this year," the directors said.

There are likely to be strong misgivings from within the sport. Some will argue that the players will be put off by the presence of the models, while other critics will question why tennis has to resort to boxing-style gimmicks to attract publicity.

The models will almost certainly show greater competence this year. The organisers claimed that the women, many of whom knew nothing about tennis before they were hired for the job, had been taking their preparations seriously and were in daily training.

Greg Rusedski had been expecting to play his opening round in Moscow yesterday, but his match against Frenchman Michael Llodra will instead take place today.

LOL they had to mention Murray.

I guess that means he'll be #1, eh? :p

I don't mind it, but they should have male ones, too.

Federer commented on the use of models as ballgirls.

[Federer] deflected an inquiry about the Madrid tournament's use of models as ballgirls with the comment, "Do they pick up the balls well?" and a laugh. "If they do, it seems fine to me.

Things in GM go this way, probably after these Federer´s comments, the ridiculous whining will stop. I mean, who the fuck cares at who the ball kids are in 7 or 8 matches? Not me at least. And apart from this, it was a great idea merchandising-wise as Hugo Boss got more coverage in that week than in years, hats off and full stop.

Yes, they did mention last year that they if they got a WTA tournament, they'd use male models. It's only fair. Not that it will persuade me to watch it though.

If men and women want to enjoy and appreciate each other's "assets", I'm all for it...natural part of life and to be totally expected. ;)

However, this is a professional sport. Not the WWF. If they want to have models escort the players on to the court or have some modeling show as a pre-event, that's fine...gives the guys some dates for the week ;) and gives the ladies a job.

But not as ballgirls. It looks unprofessional and sexist, and cheapens the sport.

Plus ballkids look so forward to being on court with their top players or their favorites.

But that's my humble opinion. :)

I don't think the original idea was to provide the players with extra entertainment, it was to draw in the crowd. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to realise that this kind of statement might immediately alienate a large proportion of their potential ticket-buyers (the females).

I was just being humorous...or attempting to be...lol!!! Because they are asking the player's opinions.

It does alienate a large percentage of the potential ticket-buyers.

I can only speak for the US since that's where I'm from, but sports marketers have realized that men already watch sports - if they want to grow, they have to target the female audience. One sport that has done that effectively is NASCAR. Has grown tremendously by targeting the female audience. And the advertisements during the races reflect that. Obviously NASCAR and tennis are two different sports, but marketing is marketing.

Of course, one could argue that women get the enjoyment of watching the male players....I for one really enjoyed watching the guys practicing shirtless this summer and have the pictures to prove it!!! lol!!!!!!!!!

But then again, they don't play shirtless - maybe we should have a tournament where the guys play shirtless and there are model ballgirls! Something for both genders in the audience. That ought to sink the sport to a new low... ;)

Sexist Mexist  I think this just opens a whole new area of tennis strategizing. A player can send his coach to scout whether his next opponent likes blonds/ brunettes/petite/curvy and try to encourage such models to work on the day of their match.

Of course the whole plan may backfire and the player himself maybe the one who gets distracted, but these are the risks you take when implementing new cutting edge strategies

Star - oh no, forget the short shorts!!! Yuck!!! Shirtless has my vote - well for the players that can pull off shirtless! There are a few players that we may have to ask with all due respect to please keep their shirts on... ;)

Hey, I remember when tennis players had thighs as well as calves. It's so much better to see their legs than to have them all covered up long baggy shorts that are more like skirts than anything. :)

Well, we know that the Madrid organizers were so in favor of the ATP Doubles Enhancements that they decided to unilaterally cancel doubles.
The models as ballgirls are their version of Singles Enhancements.

The fact that many of the models are themselves "Double Enhanced" is just an added bonus for them!

Star - I remember them too - really though do we want to go back there again??? I guess we'll have to agree to disagree... :) :) Though maybe you have a point - at the Pilot Pen, Feli Lopez was goofing around so much in practice one day, and he kept hiking up his shorts around his upper legs...I got a picture of it...it was funny but also very enjoyable  . I'll try to remember to post it here when I get home.

Sorry, I missed your winks when reading the archived version. Yes, I certainly felt alienated by this move, but not enough to be put off buying tickets though. Tennis certainly seems to be dumbing down, and doubtless there will be more dazzling ideas from the tournament directors the world over...

Have to say I'm totally with star on the shorts though. I find watching shirtless players mildly embarrassing (not that I get any chance to see them practising in that state at Wimby as it's still not allowed, I don't think), but I do miss seeing legs.

Things like the changes the ATP are making to the Doubles game get me very angry. This in contrast is absolutely trivial. As long the rules of the game and the dimensions of the court etc stay the same I would be content if the ball girls/boys/models/whatever all dressed up in gorilla costumes.
