well apparently the tournament directors tried really hard to get rafa...he was like their #1 target...but he's signed for chennai :(

I agree, it is not very interesting this year. Only one top player, and he'll be coming off a long injury layoff. Gaudio may be top 10 again by then, but still.
The US team is so weak, they should have invited Blake again, he always plays his best tennis in Perth.

Nadal is 2nd in the rankings. A $400,000 tournament wouldn't give him many points, even if he wins it. And judging by Chennai's field this year, it's a weak tournament. So why should he spend the new year's day in India worrying about this, when he could be in Spain with his relatives drinking champagne and stuff?

When the last year the Tsunami happened Nadal had already committed to play in Doha and he couldn't already change the tournament . I have the feeling that after Tsunami last year he took the decision of playing in Chennai the next season .

I am sure there are grapes to eat in Chennai as well ;) What I meant was, that Chennai is as good or even better than the Hopman Cup to start the year, in particular for a highly ranked player.

Doha offers more points and a bigger money prize, but maybe Rafa doesn't want to meet Rogi there.

Anyway, I think Nadal's decision has more to do with the tsunami issue.

I think that talking only tennistically is a good decision for him to play in Chennai instead of playing Doha or Adelaide.

Chennai is one of the weakest tournaments in terms of draws , even there are some challengers with more powerful draws overall .

Going to Chennai he has more than 75% of chances to be the winner and get the 175 points, and as next year he won't go to south america and in theory it's gonna be very difficult for him to win an indoor tournament in Europe. then going to Chennai he will can keep for example the 175 points won in Brazil.

Good point. And it's reasonable considering that Hewitt will be playing in Adelaide and Federer will be playing in Doha.

Lineup doesn't look any better or worse than last year IMO. Maybe the novelty of the Hopman Cup is wearing off for a lot of the top flites. No Italy or Slovakia is a surprise, as they allways like to turn up.

I was hoping for Robredo to come back to the hopman cup. With Gisela looking to come back, I thought it may have been possible as long as they could get Medina or Llagos Vives to come as well.

Not as good a lineup as I wouldve hoped, but I'll definitely be going along to Russia v USA and Aussie v Argentina....and if I can, I'll try and make it along to see Kiefer and Djokovic

I was looking forward to seeing Blake again but ít's a pleasant surprise to see Taylor in there :) Hopefully Marat won't tank this time like he did when I saw him against Argentina last year. And it should be cool to see Gaudio for the first time, even if it is at the expense of seeing Coria again.

Sweden take up Hopman Cup berth

Sweden, led by 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson, will replace Belarus in the Hopman Cup team event.

Johansson will partner 21-year-old Sofia Arvidsson in Perth after Belarus were forced to pull out due to a schedule change for Max Mirnyi.

Sweden will face Serbia & Montenegro and then top seeds Russia, setting up a replay of the 2002 Melbourne final between Johansson and Marat Safin.
