Well everyone is aware of the war in 1991 that split up Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. The war was really about nothing, but thats not what this thread is about, its about what could of been in tennis if it was still Yugoslavia

Goran Ivanisevic, Ivan Ljubicic, Mario Ancic,Ivo Karlovic, Novak Djokovic, Amer Delic, Janko Tipsarevic, Danial Nester(dubs,)Nenad Zimonjic (dubs), Iva Majoli, Monica Seles, Ana Ivanovic, Up and coming Jr. Marin Cilic(RG Champ).

Could of had nice Davis Cup team- for years to come with Ljubicic,Ancic and Djokovic and doubles with Nester and Zimonjic.

But it will never happen, because of nothing.

dont even get me started on soccer.

Why bother? Last thing I heard, the Croatian Davis Cup Team is doing pretty well!

And let's do get started on "soccer"! The sport is called football. Soccer is just a name Americans came up with because they, in their eternal wisdom, decided to use the word football for a game which is played for 95 percent by hand and which uses an advocadoe-shaped object rather than a ball.
The British, who are of course the inventors of the sport, aptly named it football, a term which does the great sport justice and which we should all use!

I look at the players these countries are producing and I can't help feeling how shit our British system is. Croatia with population 5 million, Serbia 10 million, Czech 10 million, Slovakia 5 million are each producing as many, if not, more top tennis players than UK population 60 million.
I have so much respect for these countries :worship: How do they do it?

Go easy...I call it soccer too because that is what Australians have been brought up calling the game. It doesn't mean I disrespect the game by calling it soccer, it is simply the way some groups of people have been brought up calling the game.
If anything it's disrespectful to snark on those who happen to call it "soccer". It's not like Americans, Canadians, and whoever else happens to call it "soccer" (Aussies?) are now a lower form of being for this slight. It's truly not a big deal so long as we all know what is being talked about.

Well then there was the former USSR in the days of Kafelnikov, Chesnokov, Medvedev would have been an outstanding team and now they could have used Mirnyi in the doubles.

There are so many what ifs going around, it is just fun speculation now.

Monica seles has Hungarian roots (she was from Voyvodina region where many ethnic Hungarians come from) not slavic roots. Amer is Muslim & so more likely identifies with Bosnia and Alex Bogdanovic has been a U.S. citizen for a while. Using your logic I would say that Jelena Dokic is a traitor to Australia.

The British, who are of course the inventors of the sport, aptly named it football, a term which does the great sport justice and which we should all use!

The term "soccer" was coined by a Brit, an Oxford University student in the 1880s. Since "Rugger" was slang for Rugby Football, he made "Soccer" short for association football. (I guess "Asser" didn't sound so good  )

And again, it was the British who started playing Rugby Football in the early 1800s, holding the ball and running with it. The American form of football derived from this game.

Not that it really matters all that much. ;) But there are many American terms which originated in Britain, but whose usage diverged over time.

It depends on the sport, it's not the case for football, but for tennis, you are pretty much right, though there are some exceptions.

i think tennis people do tend to come from better off families. and if it was the case of east europeans wanting to get out of their country because their are hungry they would be better at all the other sports as well! but theyre not, the 'west' is better at some sports. i think its got a lot to do with the built of people from particular parts of world, i think people from east are quite tall which helps with tennis.

we also forgot to mention jelena jankovic, she is pretty strong on the wta right now. i think she is 17th right now.

jelena dokic and so on are not traitors to serbia! they should play for the country they feel they belong to and want to play for.by the way jelena was raised in australia and spent most of her life there, she must feel more australian than serbian. why should she be forced to play for a country she hasnt been to since she was a kid?

same goes for alex bogdanovic. is he feels british he should play for them. the part i dont get tho is why, when there was a challenger here in belgrade and alex was playing against someone like waske who is from germany, everyone cheered for alex bogdanovic? if he doesnt play for us, why cheer for him ?

Not really, standard of living is just getting better and better.

It is true though they dont have the great development systems in place. Its all about hard work and desire, I know Croatians are pretty passionate people and love their sport, maybe the English just lack that passion.

Yugoslavia was terrible, i dont want to think about that shit, but you are right, even though we do fine on our own in sports we would be much better together. Imagine Soccer, hell Croatia and Serbia are world class separate...

True enough. Golf and tennis: mostly rich kids. In the United States, basketball, American Football, and baseball are dominated by poor kids.
