Why is nobody excited about Djokovic?

I'm not takin' anything away from Murray, cos that guy had an awesome week and he's played some matches which show he really has the potential to be top-10 :yeah:

But I just don't understand, why there is so much hype for Murray and none at all for Novak Djokovic? He's also only 18, and almost exactly the same age as Murray and is in fact presently ranked higher (in the 70s). He's also had some great results and in fact he beat Ancic in the US Open and went a round further than Murray did..so, I'm not saying that the hype around Murray is unjustified, cos I think he's very good, and maybe I'm just a biased Serbian girl (lol :D :o ) but I don't understand why ppl don't also talk anything about Djokovic?

There's plenty of talk. We just don't saturate GM with it. :)

Come join us in the Djokovic forum and you will get your fill.

Plus there's nothing to talk about ... he hasn't been playing lately and he had to retire from his qualifying match today so we're a little bummed. We don't know what the injury is though

And not to be a downer, but Murray is ranked above Nole now. Novak is only at 81 last time I checked.

Both guys will have good careers ahead of them definitely, but during Novak's lengthy vacation after the USO, Murray has caught up :)

I think most knowledgeable tennis watchers realise that both Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are going to be top 10 players, quite possibly within a couple of years.

For whatever reason, some people dislike Andy Murray, therefore you get a lot of pro/anti Murray threads.

If you recall the US Open Novak did get a fair number of mentions on here. What with his success in winning a couple of matches before losing to Verdasco and the notorious match against Monfils, he was discussed at length.

Why is nobody excited about Djokovic?

I'm a nobody and I'm quite excited about Djokovic ;).

Seriously, why's that matter how much hype he is getting or not? IMO, he plays great tennis and he is going to do well in the tour whether or not ppl talk about him now or later or not. I also think because he is from Serbia, is not a nation that ppl tends to get excited about. It's like those from Crezh, Slovakia and some other Eastern European countries that produces some good players that no one is excited about. Britain is different, tennis is part of their tradition and they've been looking for a star and Murray is taping into that.

And BTW, why there's always comparison between Murray and Djokovic, why not Murray and Monfils, or someone else?

Don't care for either one. Djokovic turned me off with his USOpen antics so I probably will never care too much about him. Murray is talented, but that's it for me. He doesn't rub me in any direction. He could play tennis or not play and I wouldn't care. I am more excited about Nadal, Gasquet, Berych, Monfils...... I am curious to see what Nadal's career will be like and to see what strides Gasquet takes next year.

Don't you think Djokovic will be limited by his breeathing condition ? Seems pretty bad to compete consistently at top 10 level

delsa
10-03-2005, 04:10 PM
Djokovic is pretty much appreciated here. Monfils is overhyped in France and especially around Paris since it's his hometown but nowhere else in the world or at least definitely not as much (it's as if they tried to put all the hype on Gaël since it doesn't bother himit seems to leave Gasquet alone since he's bothered by it and because they noticed hyping Monfils provoked some reaction with Gasquet coming back exactly at the time the Monfils hype begun and getting stronger when it went big etc...that's a theory many have here...of the "healthy competition , rivalry the public is building between them... ). It's getting too much sometimes though.
Djokovic is appreciated i think and he's one of the most promising youngsters of them all in many ppl's opinion. But you see with Murray, he's got talent for sure but since he's young he has difficulties controlling his behaviour in tense matches situations etc...(but that's the normal way to behave as a teen, like Gasquet and his misplaced shyness, Monfils and his flashy attitude as soon as he enters a tennis court etc..., Nadal's maturity is the exception that's not the other way round. Let them grow up at their rythm...)... Some of his "fans" are very passionate (there's an urgent need for another Henman so maybe that's one of the reasons...) confrontational and keep dissing other young players, Federer etc...so it backfired and now he basically can't let ppl indifferent because of them who try to monopolize the attention on him and his results, make a giant buzz around him to be sure nobody in the universe could have missed there's this young promissing British tennis player named Murray existing etc...So he also have loads of "haters" just because of them...The poor guy...I had a rather positive opinion about him at first but hated his on-court behaviour too (taking into account you can't hate such a young player because of that...i mean, i was a bitch as a teen myself and i didn't have the pressure he has on his shoulders (with all the Murraytardstics, he's not helped... ) when i rethink of it so...he'll grow through that hopefully). But i don't know much about his game (i only saw him play once on tv against Nalbandian in Wimbledon...). So now because of his "fans" and "haters" you tend to be ambivalent...there is definitely too much absurd extreme talks about him. The haters make you want to support him and the trolls make you want to hate him. Let's forget about them (even if it's hard... ) and see how he evolves. He's one of the great prospects we all have on the same time arriving on the tour now (lucky us...)...;)
Nole's fanbase is growing for sure. He's not hyped maybe (and it's not even sure...he must be in Serbia for ex...,no? ) but he's strongly but neatly and calmly supported or at least followed, La petite Serbe (i like your screen name btw...:)).
I began to follow Nole during this year's RG (against Ginepri  and Coria :yeah: ) but i only saw parts of these matches, but i could see his match against Grosjean in Wimbly after, then in Montréal against Gonzo and i think a few others...he was impressive in most of them. I discovered his official site like a few weeks ago too. ;)
