MARK PETCHEY has revealed the blueprint that he believes can take Andy Murray to world No.1.

The British teenager added another chapter to his story-book year yesterday when he beat US Open semi-finalist Robby Ginepri 4-6 6-4 6-3 to reach the last four of the Thailand Open.

The 18-year-old from Dunblane, who has risen into the world's top 100 after starting the year ranked 411, defeated the third seed to clinch a date with local favourite Paradorn Srichaphan today.

Murray's erratic first serve cost him the opening set but he then found his range to take the next two sets. His coach Petchey said: "He served about as well as I've seen him serve for two sets.

"He's got a lot of guts and determination and drive to make it, and certain times it pulls you through.

"The best players are usually about 60 per cent (on their first serve) and I believe so much of this game is about holding on to your serve. If you do that effectively, as Andy Roddick has shown, you can get to world No.1.

"And Andy, with the return that he has, and the hand skills he has, he's going to break once per set - almost guaranteed - against the majority of players.

"Therefore if you can build a secure foundation to his service game you're going to be in very good shape.

"At this stage of his career it's all about learning to face different players, how they play, how they're effective, and I think he did a pretty good job against Robby."

Breaks once per set for sure? His coach shouldn't talk him up too much, he doesn't need added pressure right now.

As Andy currently manages 45% of first serves in play, would I be right in suspecting this cunning masterplan has yet to be put into action?

I am glad they have noticed that Andy can't hold his serve. And I hope they intend to do something about it.

I've gotten the impression that he's somewhat immune to the pressure. That, or it drives him :p

Petchey is legendary, he tried to kick out the slackers at the LTA and was unfairly criticised.
