I Predict Gilles Muller will Upset Federer

Call me crazy, but I think that Gilles Muller could upset Roger Federer if he plays all his cards correctly. However, Muller is extremely inconsistent, so he better hope for a good day.

What I think he needs to do to win:
1. Hit wide angles that spin away from Federer on the ad court with his big lefty serve
2. Serve and volley as much as possible from the ad court and mix it up on second serves
3. Try to play forehand to backhand rallies
4. Mix up the pace and spin on serves as he did against Roddick
5. Try to end the point quickly with a go for broke winner if he is threatened to be in a defensive position

I have this gut feeling that the upset may happen, but who knows we could see a repeat of Indian Wells this year when Federer beat Muller 6-3 6-2.

Muller at least has a better chance against Federer than Ginepri, in my mind. ;)

I bet 10 bucks on Muller, if he wins I get close to $200. If he loses, it's $10 that I won''t miss.

Hewitt is always at his weakest this time of year. The fall indoor season does not bring Lleyton's best form.

Of course he CAN win since this tourny is not the highest priority for Fed and I doubt he will show the same type of urgency in these matches that he has in others. It would still be a pretty big upset.

It would still be a pretty big upset.Maybe so, but Roger doesn't enter tournaments just for the heck of it...he wants to win every tourny he enters. Plus he's still got records to chase and I think if he beats Muller (or gets to the final, I can't remember which is right) he'll have #1 locked up for the year.

Go Gilles. Nadal in Wimbledon, Roddick at the Us Open and now Federer in Bangkok would be an awesome series! ;)

RonE

I actually think it could happen if Roger doesn't come prepared. Muller is somewhat of a giant killer- he upset Agassi in Washington last year, Nadal at Wimbledon and Roddick at the USO this year.

But if Roger gives him the due respect he deserves and plays accordingly without too many slip-ups expect him to come out on top. But Muller will definitely be a tricky customer especially on an indoor hard court where he can use his strengths to his advantage.

Because Muller was smart enough to work around his strengths and attack Roddick's weaknesses. Roddick failed to work Muller's lack of foot speed, and fell to the defensive whenever Muller got into the point, and Muller worked the right angles off a player with no strategic mind.

Now that Roger won the 1st set, I expect him to win in straights. Haven't seen much of a fighting spirit in Muller when things don't go his way, and of course an upset could happen as it's proven he has game to take out most of the best players. Hopefully he'll be more consistent in the future, but for now I want him to lose :p

He is just getting into a habit that most all time greats got sooner or later.. Understanding that there is no endless supply of energy and effort, and that 6:4 or 7:5 are just as good as 6:0. ANd no need to humiliate a little man.. He is becoming very sampras-esque..

I first noticed this problem back in early 2003, believe me it's not a new phenomenon. Here are some examples from match stats:

vs Hewitt, TMC 2002: 5/21
vs Mantilla, Rome 2003: 3/17
vs Blake, US Open 2003: 3/23
vs Costa, Rome 2004: 2/14

It'll seemingly always be a problem with him, it's all very well saying he adopts a Sampras-like approach but the fact is, he won't hold serve as easily and regularly as Sampras could do.

Dirk accuses me of being too cautious as a Federer fan, RonE, but Nieminen has played 12 sets against Federer in their previous meetings and pushed him to one tiebreak, so he hasn't exactly given him that much to think about. :p

I'm not taking anything for granted tomorrow, mind you, given that a win would secure year-end no. 1.

I have also been scorned at occassionally for being too over-cautious ;)

I guess the things that stick out in my mind concerning Nieminen are the 9-7 tiebreak Roger won against him in Dubai in 2004, their AO match this year in which Roger seemed to be in all sorts of trouble and the fact the Jarkko has reached the quarters in NY pushing Hewitt to 5 sets. Combine that with what a great opportunity this is for Federer to clinch #1 (not that I have any doubt that he will clinch it anyway even if he doesn't win tomorrow) and hence my cautious approach.

The other way of looking at this "problem" is that he is able to generate more break point than other players

The fact that he is getting 21 chances against hewitt in a 3 set match is very impressive in itself. If he was going zero on 15 that then is problem. He will be able to take a few of his chances on te break point to win and that has been enough. Others are not getting to have break points as much

I agree. As his confidence grows, this problem seems to become no probem any more.

Do you guys notice the changes of his game this year? Last year he had much higher 1st service point winning % and break points save. This year those % have slighly decreased while instead 2nd service winning %, return game winning% and break points conversion rate have been much improved.
