Spain's Davis Cup captains expecting to get the chop
2005-09-28 10:07:44 GMT (Reuters)

MADRID, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Spain's Davis Cup captains Jordi Arrese and Juan Avendano are expecting to be dropped by the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) despite the victory over Italy last weekend that kept them in the World Group.

The two men, who took Spain to victory in the final of the Davis Cup in 2004, believe that advisors close to federation president Pedro Munoz have persuaded him to backtrack on his decision to renew their contracts.

"Munoz told us he would be extending our contract for another two years, but he then said that his vice-presidents did not want us in the job," Arrese was quoted as saying in sports daily Marca on Wednesday.

"I never trusted him because he always opposed our decisions when (his predecessor as president) Agusti Pujol was in charge."

Marca reported that former player Emilio Sanchez Vicario, the elder brother of Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, was the favourite to take over the captaincy.

"I'm flattered to hear my name connected with the captaincy of the Davis Cup and of course I like the idea," said Sanchez Vicario. "But as yet I have not received any offer."

other candidates are: Albert Costa , Francis Roig, "Dudu" Duarte & Jordi Arrese but alone, but Arrese has few options cos his relationship with Muñoz isn't the best ....

I can confirm ( reliable source :secret: ) that this has been mainly a Muñoz's decision , because the great part of spanish players would prefer others captains ( every player had his own opinion ),as for example Nadal and Moya that they wanted Albert Costa as captain..

Emilio Sanchez named Spain´s new Davis Cup captain

MADRID, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Spain have named former player Emilio Sanchez Vicario as the new captain of their Davis Cup team following the sackings of previous skippers Jordi Arrese and Juan Avendano.

Sanchez Vicario is the eldest brother of women's former world number one Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and has made a living as a coach and television commentator since his retirement from the ATP circuit.

"Emilio is a great professional, a hard worker and a proven success," Spanish Tennis Federation president Pedro Munoz told a news conference on Saturday.

The decision to discard Arrese and Avedano, who led Spain to victory in the 2004 Davis Cup, was a controversial one and did not meet with the approval of all the players in the Spanish team.

But Munoz said that Sanchez Vicario's appointment now had the full support of all the players in the present squad.

"All of the players without exception said that they were united behind my decision."

Spain lost to Slovakia in this year's World Group first round tie though victory over Italy last month kept them in the elite group for 2006 where they will open with a tie against Belarus.

The truth is that the main part of spanish top players don’t mind what Muñoz says , Muñoz hasn’t got to gain the respect of these top players , in fact the relationship between he and some of these top players is cold and distant.

PS . According to Muñoz, he found out about Ferrero was gonna play the fifth rubber against Bracciali only 30 minutes before the match . :haha:

Odd because I knew, here in the States, the day before since the information was posted right after the doubles and there was a lot of controversy about it since many felt Nadal should've played the fifth rubber. In hindsight G2 knew what Nadal's physical condition was and did the right thing.

I think you are completely confused ..Nadal playing the fifth rubber ??? did you want to mean Ferrer, right ??

Nadal couldn't play the fifth rubber ..

Galaxy you said that Munoz didn't know about Ferrero playing the fifth rubber. I assume you meant this last round of DC play. If you are talking about Slovakia, my bad. I misunderstood.

Moya on Emilio S.V. and Albert Costa : " The spanish players aren’t against Emilio at all , but we prefered Albert Costa to him "

There isn’t no doubt that the great part of spanish players wanted Albert Costa . They have taken this Muñoz’s decision badly because Muñoz has done what he wanted , that is a unilateral decision.

See what I meant with my comments about him Muñoz and a caudillo. Maybe he is a friend of Aznar.

It's a shit decision and I wonder what will happen if Belarus win, will they sack Emilio?
