Enqvist makes an ultimate comeback

"I felt I had more to give" Thomas Enqvist, 31, gives tennis an ultimate real chance.
Today, Sportsbladet can reveal that the Swede will come back next week and that he's supposed to play the Stockholm Open as well.

- This type of tennis which is dominating at the moment, I have it, says Enqvist.
Thomas Enqvist is tired to play continually with small injuries and without being at 100 % of his capacities.

- I wasn't myself on the court. First, I was frustrated, second, I was tired to be frustrated.

After Wimbledon, Thomas made a 6 weeks' break, the longest in his 14 years as a professional.

- I spent my time with my girlfriend here, in Monte-Carlo, enjoyed the life and thought about my life after tennis, said Enqvist, to Sportsbladet at the Kungliga Tennis Hallen.

Here, he's been working very hard at the practrice for three weeks with this coach MikaŰl Tillstr÷m.

After 6 weeks, the former world number 4 arrived to give a tennis an ultimate last chance.

- I have been worked strong during these 5 weeks - both my physics and my tennis.

Better than before ?

Physically and psychologically, he's better than beforeIt has been a long time that I could practrice so intensively, without any pain. He's also a better tennis player.

- I'm problably more "all round" now

But, why did you choose to come back ? Not for the money (Enqvist has earned over 80 millions SEK) ?

- I thought that I had more to give. And tennis is really cool. The development of the tennis game is also one of the reason.

- This type of tennis, offensive from the base line which is dominating at the moment, I have it.This is my game. I'll see and I believe this is fairly long, he says, without telling any result or a goal in the rankings.

And now, Enqvist is ready to come back : he received a wild-card for the next challenger tournament, in Grenoble.

Enqvist fell in the ATP Ranking, he's now n░ 195.

- I hope for several wild cards, otherwise I'd have to play some qualifying matches. The wild card for the Stockholm Open, from October 10-16, should be a pure formality (2 wc left, Jonas Bj÷rkman got the first one).

- I try and I hope I'll receive one. I have won there 3 times, says Enqvist, who has the eyes on the center court of the Kungliga.

Nice article! I thought money was the only reason he bothered playing anymore but it's nice to know that his heart is still in it. Unbelievable to think that he was never off the tour for more than 6 weeks at a time until this year! Watch out, Wayne Ferreira.

Anyway, good win and I hope Thomas has a strong indoor season with a great Stockholm event. :D

Thomas Enqvist has a huge all court game that can beat the best in the world, his 20 plus titles show that. A great serve and backhand and a match winning forehand and stings with power and precision, I remember when he beat Agassi, Rios, Krajicek and Kuerten all in the same tournament (Stuttgart 1999). It has shocked me recently to see him lose to mediocre players.

19 titles, but I take your point. He was one of the should-have-won-a-Slam underachievers of the 1990s, although as someone pointed out a couple of years ago his low percentage style of play isn't really suited to the week in week out grind of the ATP Tour, with the potential for injuries and bad streaks of form. I mean, he's been losing to mediocre players more or less since the start of 2003, so the decline is hardly recent. I wouldn't mind if he performed some more indoor monstrousness one last time before his career is over.
