IVANISEVIC IN DAVIS CUP COMEBACK!

Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic is to come out of retirement to fight for a place in Croatia's Davis Cup final team. The Croats will travel to Slovakia for the tournament's climax in December after beating Russia on Sunday and Ivanisevic is hoping to qualify as his country's fourth player.

The 34-year-old quit the game in 2003 because of a persistent shoulder injury, but will now challenge Sasa Tuksar for the final berth in captain Niki Pilic's side.

Pilic revealed that the two men would have a one-off play-off match to decide who gets the nod.

"I'm telling everyone now for the first time that there will be a one-off match between Goran and Sasa at my club in Munich," Pilic stated.

"It will be held on a fast rebound ace court at 500m altitude, and that will help Goran.

"Whoever wins will be the fourth player. But if Goran loses he will still be with us for the final. If Goran wins Sasa will also still be with us."

Ivanisevic, who claimed glory at SW19 in 2001, confirmed he was deadly serious about the comeback, but insisted he would be cheering on his nation with equal fervour whether he made the team or not.

"It's not for me to decide, I'll be there as fourth player or as assistant coach, whatever, I'll be there," he declared.

"It's much tougher watching. You want to help but you can't, you have to sit, you can't get out of your seat.

"When you're playing you can control the situation, your emotions, but when you're sitting you can only yell and scream."

"I know this team can win the Davis Cup.

"For us to be in the final is great for the sport, the country, it's unbelievable."

Wow!

Would he play ANY part in the tie though? I can't see him being given a live rubber (apart from maybe doubles) and i doubt he would want to play a dead one...

Nice to hear about another comeback attempt! He is almpst like the Tennis Terminator...always coming back

Interesting, but I doubt Pilic would use him for a live rubber when he already has 3 great players who haven't been retired for over a year. ;) I guess he just wants to be "part of the team."

The Davis Cup is an ITF event, not ATP. Or does that 599 total include the davis cup ?

Sure, if they want to lose doubles ... it's not fair to other active players to be left out regardless to his achievements.

that's all very good but since the final will be held in Slovakia most probably it will be held on clay since Hrbaty is good on that surface and it is Croats weakest surface. So shoudn't Goran and the other chap play on clay? If Mario or Ivan are injured there needs to be a the best player to replace them. I doubt that Goran or Karlovic could do the job.

Yes, winning a DC match counts as a ATP win

except that clay is beck's worst surface and the croats are the favorites in doubles on any surface

Wasn't Niki Pilic Goran's own coach at one point? Actually I think Pilic was sitting next to Goran's dad when Goran won Wimbledon. Now he's Croatian captain and this play off match is being played at Pilic's club. On a court that Pilic himself has chosen. On a surface Pilic says will suit Goran. If you were Sasa Tuksar right now wouldn't you get the feeling Pilic was not exactly on your side?

I'm sure Goran will be there whatever happens in this match. It'll be great to see him again.

i would like to see Goran playing in some ATP Event to train for that match :)

I have to say putting him on the team over someone who has been their the entire season isn't that fair.

But that said, I hope they let him play three matches ;)

I know, i wouldnt be feeling too great if i were Sasa knowing nobody wants him to win.

Sasa hasnt done anything, this is actually the first rubber hes participated in (Karanusic was in USA, and i think Romania?) Goran deserves it.

how does someone who hasn't been in the player group all year deserve this chance, especially when he is not a tour regular? Don't get me wrong, i loved goran when he played, one of my fav players but you can't be living in the past

btw, the loser of the ivanisevic vs. tuksar match is still going to travel to the final with the team so it's not like sasa is being left out

The reality is if Tuksar was even in the team he wouldnt play, simple. Goran is there just to boost morale and if he can beat Tuksar why not?

EXACTLY!

Any for everyone complaining that Goran might take the place of an "active" player when he hasn't been part of the team all year, the same could be said of Tuksar. If you were team captain and had to pick one extra person to go to the finals, who likely wouldn't play anyways, would you pick the guy who's ranked 200 and has never won any titles or the veteran grand slam winner? Neither of them are in prime form, so go with the guy who's going to lift the team spirits. Nothing wrong with that. At least he's giving Tuksar a chance.

I love Goran and hope he'll be there, but I have to say it isnt really fair for someone who's retired and hasnt been on the team the whole year to suddenly get the nod just because they are in the final. Its not like the 4th member is totally useless, he is there in case another team member gets injured or is tired, and will Goran fill in if someone else is injured?

who has been the 4th member of the squad throughout this year?
There hasn't been a consistant 4th member. Karanusic and Krajan filled in the 3rd and 4th places when they played the US (Karlovic wasn't there), but neither of them played live matches. Karanusic played one dead rubber, and lost. Tuksar was the 4th member during the ties against Romania and Russia, but he didn't play in either.

In fact, the ONLY time Tuksar has played was in the World Group playoffs last year. He played a dead rubber, and lost.

On the other hand, Goran has a 48-15 record in Davis Cup and strong sentimental ties. Since it's unlikely that he'll play a live match anyhow, I don't understand why it's such a big deal that they're giving him the chance to go.

Croatian captain has had an orignal idea to choose the fourth player , original but not serious :retard:. You cannot choose a player just wacthing the winner of a match. An unique match means nothing

I think this idea couldn't never be accepted by the press and supporters in serious countries tennistically speaking as for example US , France , Spain...

I don't like that kind of countries which turn the former sports mythes into eternal Gods and those Gods have the power to do what they want in the country . Even sometimes those Gods have more power than the President.

I think this Pilic's idea is a great lack of respect towards Sasa Tuksar and if i was him i would tell Pilic : " Fuck off " , and obviously i wouldn't go to Munich to play that match . It's just a matter of dignity.

Maybe Ivanisevic has a better level than Tuksar nowadays, but i think is unfair that a player using his " God's power " can be in Davis cup final not playing before a rubber . If he didn't play the first 3 rubbers because he was officially retired, , then he should continue retired during Davis cup final. ( I know he plays senior circuit , but he's offiacilly retired from ATP and Davis cup team )

Ivanisevic's time finished and all croatians and Ivanisevic should assume that truth, cuz to live thinking in the past is the worst thing you can do.

That will be nice to see. I think it will offer croatia more security to win the dc. Ancic isn't the most reliable player, and so the weight has fallen on Ljubicic's shoulders. I'm sure Ljubicic will appreciate having Goran as a backup.

I don't agree w/ Goran coming back for DC...I think the players who has gotten the team this far should be allowed to play...would the USA team ask Sampras to come back and play in the DC final? I don't think so. Why take away glory from the current team members?...I think they've done fine w/o Goran. Goran should stay in the stands, support the team and leave it there. Next they'll ask Pat Rafter to come out of retirement if the Aussie DC team reaches the final...give me a break!

At this point, the American team does need help. I'd be happy if they asked Sampras to come back and help. Although, I don't think he would be much help other than to intimidate the opponents.

Andy is shouldering the American team. He needs a strong second.

Well, I guess the US team needs all the help they can get at this point...lol Seriously, I just feel Ivan and Mario and the rest of the squad has been fantastic...they have chemistry and work so well together. Goran has had his time in the sun and should let these guys shine. I mean these guys have come this far w/o Goran stepping on the court...why couldn't continue the trend w/o the help of Goran. I have no issues w/ Goran, but I want the current to get their due and I feel it will be overshadowed by Goran joining the team in the finals.
