It would be great if Roger could keep this title and make his streak go from grass to hard to clay to indoors. If Roger wins Bangkok he gets 35 champ points (keeps his entry points) but if he wins Basel also then the difference between Basel and Bangkok would be gain which would be 15 points (75 points gained for entry) understand? :)

then he win the TMS in Shanghai he will more 150 point!~

RonE

then he win the TMS in Shanghai he will more 150 point!~

150 race points yes. But he won't get any extra ENTRY points there as he is defending them.

However if he wins Bangkok and Basel he will gain an extra 75 ENTRY points since Basel is in a superior level to Bangkok in terms of points and since for the entry ranking the five best optionals are counted, Basel with more points replaces one of his lower tier optional wins awarding him the extra points.

The draw in Bangkok looks ok, but as usual I will take nothing for granted. Muller could be a dangerous QF opponent, Haas looms in Roger's half (they could meet in the semis) and of course is a dangerous indoor player. Even if he meets Hewitt in the final it could be tricky seeing as Hewitt really has improved and I don't think he is as frightened of Roger as he has been last year. If they meet Roger needs to reassert himself and have a really convincing win over him to keep him in check.

But because it was Silvy who started the cheering thread again we just KNOW he will do well there  ;)

Hi Ron. :wavey: If you have a chance, could you explain in a PM or send me a link to the "Idiot's Guide to the ATP Point System"? Entry vs. Ranking points??? Three years of law school and more years of practice and you'd think I'd be able to understand this ... might help if I read the rules.

Hi Ron. :wavey: If you have a chance, could you explain in a PM or send me a link to the "Idiot's Guide to the ATP Point System"? Entry vs. Ranking points??? Thanks for starting this thread, Silvy. :smooch: Like Ron said, that's a good sign for Roger. :worship:

I am sure Ron already did a very good job in his PM, but since a lot of people don't really understand the difference, I will also try to explain it as well. ;)

Entry point system is what matters for most of the season. Seeds are based on your entry ranking, and the entry ranking takes the results of the past 12 months into account, with the 4 slams, 9 TMS (and TMC if the player made it), and then 5 more optionals, giving a total of 18 tournaments (19 if TMC's played). So whenever a player wins matches/tournaments, the results will be compared to exactly 12 months ago. If the player earned more points from the tournament that happened 12 months ago, that player's entry ranking would suffer. If he improved the results, then he would gain points.

The funny thing about this system is, let's say player A made a great run in one of the bigger tournaments 12 months ago, and player B did absolutely nothing at that time, if player A doesn't defend his points from last year, player B can rise up the rankings by doing absolutely nothing at this time of the year.

Champion race instead takes the current calender year's results into account. Everyone starts from 0 at the beginning of the year and gain points as they win matches. Same as entry ranking, they take 4 slams, 9 TMS+TMC, and 5 optionals, a total of 18 tournaments (19 if he made TMC).

This race has no points to "defend". If you win, you gain points. So in a way it's more straight forward than the entry ranking.

With the Entry ranking, after knowing how the player did at this tournament, you also have to check how he did 12 months ago to see whether he gained or lost points.

Hope that cleared some things up, and if I made any mistakes, feel free to correct me. :)

Thanks, LCeh. And isn't it usually true that whoever is #1 in the race is #1 in entry ranking as well?

No problem. :)

I would think so, since the last 12 months of the entry ranking becomes a calender year by the end, so I would think they would be equal at the end of the year. Entry ranking and Champion race also give the exact same proportion of points from each tournament, other than the fact that entry ranking's points are 5 times the champion race. (Winning GS for champion race is 200 points while for entry ranking is 1000)

RonE

Only at the end of the year when the entry and race are lined up. As LCeh pointed out, since the entry reflects the last 12 months and the race reflects only since the beginning of the calendar year, the only time both systems line up to reflect the same time frame is at the end of the year after the Cup.

But if there was a way of taking the entry system and calculating the amount of entry points gained since the beginning of the year then yes, you would be right it would in fact be done by multiplying the race points by 5 for each player.

Yes, they are the same. If a certain player finished at a certain position in the race at the end of the year he would finish in the same position in the entry ranking.

In case of a tie between two players (same amount of points) the player who has gained a higher number of required points will outrank the other player. By required points I mean points accumulated at the required events- the Grand Slams, Master Series and Masters Cup (if played).

I wish Roger good luck, but don't think he'll need it. Assuming he brings at least his B (and A game when the occasion demands it), I'm pretty sure he'll retain this title. At least now I can go back to supporting Roger - I support him against every other player in the world - except when its Davis Cup! He is just such a beautiful and graceful player to watch. Is this tourny going to be televised in the UK I have had an email from ZCam asking if I want to watch it over the internet (for a price of course!). Though the time difference is not good for us I think.

Hi Minnie :wavey:

Hi Daniel! :wavey: Wish I had more time to post here ... as I see lots of threads I'd like to get involved with ... but I just don't have the time! Just re-watched some of that Davis Cup doubles on Sat ... that piece at the end showing the Swiss celebrations was really nice - just a pity the BBC over-rode some of it with interviews with Jeremy Bates/Greg Rusdeski. Thankfully I've no "angst" this week, as I'm pretty confident Roger will win in Bangkok - I shall keep an eye on the livescores from my office for rest of the week... but the Masters Cup in Shanghai .... I can feel "butterflies" already! The garden is calling for me to get out there ..... (it might rain if I'm lucky!). :wavey:

Yea Rog! :woohoo:

I didn't follow the match online at all (doesn't sound like you really could anyway) and honestly I don't care if he wins this one or not. He's already done sooooo well this year, and I'd really like to see him another Masters Series, hopefully Basel, and for sure Masters Cup. So this would just be a bonus for me.

Doesn't sound like Lleyton had an easy time of it either. I'd never heard of who he played. He won 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Just goes to show the early rounds can be tricky for top players especially when adjusting to a different surface. These nobodys have nothing to lose, they're suppose to lose so they just let it all out and play very lose.

7-6(4), 6-4?

How did Roger play? Was it sloppy play from him or good play from the opposition that attributed to this tight score?

Did anyone see the match?

What does this Marcos guy play like? Big serve? Big groundies? 1 handed or 2 handed backhand? Good volleys? What is his underwear size?

Details please.......

SUKTUEN

lucashg
09-28-2005, 04:51 PM
Well, Roger said Daniel tried to serve-and-volleyed him, and apparently played well combined with some sloppy play by Roger. I've only seen Daniel once, earlier this year during the Sao Paulo challenger event and he was quite good off his groundies, consistent all around with some good volleys, though it's not typical of his game to serve and volley.

Well, he's been playing the best tennis of his career as of late, so I'm glad he at least could make things tight for Roger a bit. Hopefully he'll keep improving and will get into more ATP level events.

As for Roger, he said he was rather frustrated and that's to be expected when you're not playing your best against an unknown opponent in a sudden change of surfaces, so good job in wrapping it up! Good luck for the rest of the tournament, Fed!

I think it's done already coz if Nadal wants to end #1 he has from now on to win every single match while Roger has to lose them. And since Nadal has planned to pull out of Vienna.....

If he beats Muller, he will be #1. Nadal can still pick up 365 points this year (15-Vienna, 100-Madrid, 100-Paris, 150-TMC Shanghai). Federer led the race by 352 points coming into the Thai Open and will get 15 points if he wins against Muller. That would mean a difference of 367 points and Nadal could not make it up this year.

No, the Championship race ranking doesn't equal Entry ranking at this time of the season. But when the season finishes, they are the same---the race ranking points time 5, you get the Entry ranking points.

Congrats Fed, now onto the SF. I don't think Nieminem is gonna be much of a problem, but he can never subestimate his opponents, so better be prepared as usual. Good luck!

The stats showed a poor match from both sides, but Roger held his own and got through rather easily, so that's good for him.
