Jeremy Bates 3 simple rules to bring the gold davis cup to the mother country:

1. Once you find out the tie against switzerland is on the red clay quickly gather up a welsh man and 2 scots to proudly play under the St George flag. None of them are English you say? no problem, stick henman on the bbc to analyse the match at every opportunity and give the team a true "English" feel.
Bates logic was obvious of course, the tie is on clay so they must pick a clay court specialist team to travel to Switzerland regardless of nationality. And with a grand total of 1 win on clay over the past 4 years between the 3 of them who could argue with such a team.

2.A captain must come up with tactics. A team that is superb on clay isnt enough. You need tactics. Here Bates came up with a masterstroke that will be talked about for years. The man bamboozled his hapless Swiss opposite number, and the worlds best player, by nominating Mackin to play the first match. Federer admitted under interrogation from Sue Paxman-Barker earlier that the team was expecting him to be playing Andy Murray first-up today, and he was completely non-plussed as a result. Federer was then mentally battered further by young Macadder who resolutely refused to win a single game until midway through Set 3, and deliberately refused to take any of the various break-points Federer lamely offered him. It was obvious to this viewer that Federer was shaken to the core by all this, and I now doubt he will be taking part in Sundays reverse dead rubber singles as a result.

3. A captain must motivate his team. Bates got the absolute best out of the notoriously difficult to handle young ASBO chav Murray Mint. It was a tactical masterstroke for Bates to just peel Murray's bananas for him and let him get on with losing in straight sets.

It is foolish to second-guess Bates now, but I suspect he will be lining up a further surprise tomorrow. My guess is that he'll go with himself against Federer to further soften up the Swiss robot, leaving Murray Mint to bring home the Davis Cup Trophy in the last match with an easy win over Ford Allegro.

Here's what Murray said after the match:

For 18-year-old Murray it offered an insight into how it feels to face Federer across the net and, despite the pain of defeat, it was an experience the teenager relished. I dont know whether he played his best tennis today but he certainly played very well, said Murray. He made a few big serves on a few big points. Its great to get a feel for how he hits the ball and its an honour to be on the same court with him.

Rusedski complained vigorously to the umpire, Sandra de Jenken, when she failed to call a net cord, and when she ignored him he appealed to the Swiss pair, who turned the other way. :) When Rusedski won the next point, he yelled loudly and pumped his fist menacingly at Allegro, the server. The crowd responded with some very un-Swiss booing.

of course federer is happy. if tie is alive it would be another chance for strategic master Jeremy Bates to screw with him mentally, tony blair would be on his way to pull this tie out of the fire in the 4th rubber.

:haha: Blair the contortionist!

I side with Bates for this tie. He got the singles formation right...pity it backfired. I was still expecting Sherwood to play the doubles, but I think Murray was an equal substitute for him.

Next year will be horrible...we might not even be seeded for EA Grp 1...meeting nations like the Czech Republic and maybe even Spain before the WG Qualies. :scared:

people are sayin bates strat backfired, but c'mon, dou you realy think greg would have beaten federer.Of course not. But Murray was supposed to beat Wawrinka. Once that didn't happen the Brits were screwed. Just like the Swiss are screwed when Roger doesn't play.

Murray stood out as being the most impressive player on the court today. It's just a shame his partner doesn't know how to return. Roger didn't play well at all.

Andy got broken three time so how was he the most impressive player today?

Check Murray's ranking and Wawrinka's to find out who was the fave and who was the underdog.

Check Murray's ranking and Wawrinka's to find out who was the fave and who was the underdog. What I meant was the Brits were pinning their hopes on Murray. They though he should beat Wawrinka.

I think the tie turned out just as we expected really. Maybe we expected to win 1 rubber, but we were still going to be mauled!

Now we need to avoid the Czechs and Italians in the EA Group 1, and knowing our luck in drawing away ties and clay courts, we will draw one of them early, probably Italy! :tape:

GO ITALY :woohoo:

Look on the bright side of life! If Great Britain loses to Italy and then goes down to Europa/Africa zone Group 2 you're almost certain to have a good draw there, and win some matches (Take care of Monaco though). ;)

For the i-don't-remember-how-many-times-i-said-this time, I only said Andy is a jerk when he is playing and above all in regard of the balboys, that is all!!!

Please buy some glasses coz you don't seem to be able to read what I write. Yesterday when I came across Andy's way he seemed really nice to me, I never said the opposite of this!

:haha: I remember seeing him holding about 4 balls picking which 2 to serve with against Wawrinka and he dropped one by accident and then threw the other 3! I think he was annoyed at dropping one but it was still funny! Totally harmless in my opinion!
