I can't believe this guy (Nicolas) lol.He was about to lose, feeling nervous cause Tommy had lost just before him and somehow, after 3 hours 30 minutes..he won! I mean,THIS is a warrior,a champion.I don,t know if you looked at the pics on the davis cup website .there is one where he is in the arms of dc german coach, his eyes are closed.I was crying..lol.

Another thing,we all know Karen here in this forum, well Rita is about to hit Texas so lets all pray that she and everyone at there are all safe.

Kiefer fights back to draw Germany level at 1-1

German number one Nicolas Kiefer came back from a second set let-down to defeat Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic 76 46 64 62 and even proceedings at one match each on the opening day of play in the World Group Play-off.

It was an impressive victory for Kiefer after Tomas Berdych had dampened German hopes with a five set win over Tommy Haas.

The first set was an even affair with neither player facing any difficulties on serve. Kiefer used his experience to storm ahead in the tiebreak though which he claimed seven points to four. Zib hit back in the second set though as he dominated on serve winning 73% of points on first serve and 100% of points on second serve.

The shock of losing the set seemed to inspire Kiefer into action as he dropped a mere six games in the last two sets to finish off victory at the Arena Liberec in the Czech Republic.

In a match in which both players claimed to be affected by nerves, Kiefer had 30 unforced errors and Zib 32, in the 3 hour 30 minute encounter.

"I felt a lot of pressure and I was nervous", Kiefer said. "The situation was not easy because we were down 0-1. It was important for me to fight through."

"I had already chances for a 2-0 lead but in the second set Tomas played really well." Asked if he would have to raise his level of play against Berdych in the reverse singles Kiefer said, "I have to be better. But I feel good and we will see on sunday."

Zib rose to the occassion as the world number 61 matched Kiefer shot for shot in the first three sets.

"I am very disappointed“, said Zib. "If I played just a bit better I think I would have beaten him." For the 29 years old Czech the first set tiebreaker was the key to the match.

"The court was extremely fast, slippery and wet. That bothered me. But for my opponent it was the same situation“, Zib said. "When the percentage of my first service went down it was tough for me to win the match."

In the second set it looked as Kiefer had the match under his belt. He led 4-3 with a break and started to play more confidently. But all of a sudden Zib stroke back. Kiefer missed an easy dropshot and the set was even. A similar situation appeared at 5-4 for Zib. The 28-year old from Hannover, Germany missed an easy smash which gave the Czech number two the set 6-4.

Kiefer seemed to be nervous since his country was already down 0-1 but nevertheless he broke Zib in the first game of the third set. At 3-2 Zib broke back and at 5-=4 Kiefer had two set points. The German converted the second one which gave him thethird set and a two sets to one lead.

In the fourth set Kiefer had the match under control. An early break and a further break to 5-2 gave him a comfortable lead, which he converted on his third matchpoint

The tie is now totally open. Tomorrow the Czechs Davis Cup-debutants Frantisek Cermak and Leos Friedl who have won five tournaments on clay in this season will most likely meet Tommy Haas and Alexander Waske in the doubles.

"The Germans have two solutions. If Haas is not feeling fit I think Rainer Schuettler will be in the team", Cyril Cuk, the Czech capitain said. Patrik Kuehnen, the German capitain, admitted that he will decide tomorrow morning who will play.

yes, that was very sad....
First I hope that this tough loss doesn't effect him too much for the future, I'm sure he is devasted now

Second I hope that Tommy can pull out the win now in the last rubber. It would make Kiwi feel a bit better because he would know that Germany at least won the tie and he is not looking for ways to give himself the fault for this loss.

We have to admit that it was a loser performance at the end. I think he finished with about 2-12 points. :( He was dominating the first half of the 4th set, looked like the winner at 3-2* 40-15 and he really should have won that set. In the final set he played poor games on Berdych's serve, many ue's. It's not like Berdych had many service winners, it was more Kiwi who lost those games. Now he's probably about 0-7 against top50 players in DC, would have been important for his nerves to win the match today.

 It looked like a hard fought match. Berdych is good and let's not forget this is clay and that isn't Nicolas's best surface. He did quite well I think.

I think who is letting the team down is Tommy. Yes, he had the great doubles win but his is losing badly to Zib, someone who he should beat. Maybe Tommy shouldn't play the doubles, it's too much to ask for playing all 3 days. Maybe Rainer and Alexander should play the doubles

Karine, thanks for all the thoughts during the hurricane. It took a turn for the east, so Austin was spared. All we got was million people from Houston come into town. Plus, we have this huge 3 day concert in town plus the original Katrina evacuees, so between all that, traffic is horrible, no gas, no food at the stores. I can't wait for all these people to leave

Sure, JMG. Like you say, I also think Kiwi looked like the winner in the fourth set and ffs he could not take any of the load of break points he had to put Berdych away finally. The first half of the fifth set was actually still well played, but it was obvious already that Kiwi's serve didn't work that good anymore and that he has to fight more than Berdych for his service games. The 2nd half of the fifth set was bad and Berdych was there to take the match.

lol, I think that's the wrong smiley. I'm not sure if I should be happy about this draw. Well, at least it's in Germany. In the worst scenario, the chance of one eigth could have come true right in the first round by facing Russia, the only possible away opponent  At least something postive with the HOME tie finally. But as for the drawn team, France, itself... well, there are easier opponents than Gasquet and Grosjean/Monfils/Mathieu or whoever will play. Also the French have normally always a strong doubles. At least this was often the case in the past.

Winning the first round would be so important for them. To have success in the World Group and avoiding again a relegation game to stay in the World Group at the end of the year...

Lets hope Kiwi's great record against French players is continued :)

An interview of Kiwi (in French sorry...), and of Boris Becker (in English) about this DC tie...

Kiwi said that despite what everybody seems to say in France (that Germany are the huge favorites) , in Germany many says that it's the contrary because of the doubles...*lyer* even if Tommy Haas and him both beat their first opponent at the AO and Haas is playing unbelievably well, that the atmosphere in Halle will be extraordinary, that the DC is very special for him etc...Hope that helped a bit. ;)

OMG was that bad
of the whole team :smash:

Kiwi had the chance to win the first and the 2nd set, couldn't deliver the important points. Then was completely overrolled in the third set.

.... the Davis Cup, something had to be fishy about that Germany was said to be the big favourite in this tie and that both Haas and Kiefer defeated their opponents in the Australian Open already. Now we know what it was; it was just too unreal to happen again  Anyway, it seems they couldn't grow with the opportunity and that it seemed like a burden for them to play at home. France is almost everytime playing like one of the best teams you can imagine and all four players were just too tough in each match. Kiwi also, doesn't have beaten really good opponents in the Davis Cup yet, all his wins were total must-win matches. Disappointing, yes! but not the end of the world ;) I think we have lots of joy ahead with Kiwi this season

With Kiefer not having any match praxis on clay, they could possibly still go with Mayer as 2nd singles player, don't you think? Especially if he loses in the first round of the Aussie Open, which is very possible.

kiwi10is
01-12-2008, 03:24 PM
Well it's not that they are playing against the clay nation Spain, is it? Ok, Kiwi didn't play on clay for a while but I am sure he practiced on it. And even if not... he is still good enough to beat Lee on it. I guess this is more about Kühnen having his private quarreling with Kiwi. Kiwi is 2nd best available player in the ranking (if you count only the points of the last 6 months he is even the best) and we need 4 players in the team. Would be a shame if he wouldn't be in the team. But well.. maybe this is only my opinion.

Kühnen's attempt of an explanation for not picking him is plain embarrassing:
«Sein Comeback war sensationell, keine Frage. Aber hier ist mir das Risiko zu groß», sagte der Bundestrainer. «Kiwi gehört natürlich zum erweiterten Kreis des Davis-Cup-Teams, wird aber leider immer wieder von Verletzungen zurückgeworfen.»

What does he mean by "too big a risk"? That Kiefer is lacking match praxis (on clay)? But surely not that he's afraid of Kiefer injuring himself right before a single's match. That would be ridiculous.

Oh well, it's sad, but not totally unexpected and hardly matters for this tie. If Kiefer continues to play decent tennis in the upcoming HC tourneys, then there's no doubt that he'll play in April against Spain.

if you got kicked like that would you really want to be in this team again??? kühnen planned this from the moment he choosed the surface and arena. Kiwi didn`t play on clay for nearly 2 years so this fact helps as an argument and he choosed Braunschweig right in front of Kiwi's house to make it hurt even more if he will not be allowed to play and the ankle injury just made the plan perfect! Kiwi said he is fit while Petzschner had to retire in a final last sunday!!! And Mayer lost in first round from September - January including a first round loss in Heilbronn CHALLENGER against a QUALIFIER (Challenger-Qualifier)!!! Why was Kühnen not honest?? Why didn`t he just say "I don't like Kiwi that's why I take Mayer! That would have made it a lot easier for Kiwi to plan his spring season.:mad::mad:

Well, he wants to represent Germany and enjoys being in the DC team, so yeah, it's humiliating, but if Kiefer continues like that and stays calm when asked about this decision, then no way can Kuehnen do this again when they play against Spain on a faster surface. Unless Haas decides to play, of course.

Like four:love said it, I also think it is not surprising because I wrote and feared something like that already.

IMO the main reason for his decision is that the team was so succesful and happy without Kiwi last year and that Kiwi wasted a very good chance in February 2006 against France to make an impact on the team. He came with the biggest Grand Slam result of his career to Davis Cup, and could not prove it. And he also had some little issues with the team (not spending enough time with them, not appearing for a collective lunch or breakfast) which brought him bad news again. I'm sure some of you remember it. This was a huge blow, I think.

Kiwi really needs to continue like that. If he rises up in the rankings even more, it will be almost impossible for Kühnen to give reasons like this one.

But there was World Team Cup 2006 when Patrik Kühnen and Alex Waske praised Kiwi so much for leading the team so well and for his win against Gaudio. That was after the Davis Cup in Halle.:shrug:
Anyway... if Kühnen is still offended by something that happened 2 years ago he should play in kindergarten but not work as Davis Cup Coach. Look at Barbara Ritter in Fed Cup. She nominated Analena Grönefeld to motivate her and show her that it's time to comeback. What did Kühnen say last year when Kiwi was injured? "For sure there is no place in the Davis Cup Team for Kiwi this year" not mentioning his comments at World Team Cup 2007 when he was hoping that Kiwi would be still injured and give his place in the team to Kohlschreiber.

I hope this thread won't be too quiet in the future because I still think that Kühnen is unpredictable and if you heard the interviews almost nobody was talking about Kiwi, but they were emphasizing how well Kohlschreiber played and lead the team and how great this performance of Tommy was against Croatia. I think Kühnen said something like: "We need Tommy in that form and to win matches like against Croatia where he beat two top10 players if we want to have a chance against Spain".

My conclusion is: If Tommy is without problems the tournaments before the tie against Spain, the door is shut for Kiwi against Spain in singles.

I doubt that Kiwi will play against Spain. Kühnen doesn`t like him and he is just not professional enough to nominate someone against his personal preferences. I wouldn't blame Kiwi if he wouldn`t want to play anymore after this. But he has to say he wants to play because it is part of the Olympia qualification. Only players who make themselves available for Davis Cup are allowed to play Olympia.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Waske still can't play, which would make room for Kiefer. Not only as a doubles partner for Petzschner, but also as a possible singles player on Sunday. Mayer and Berrer should be out of the question, if Kiefer has decent runs in IW and Miami.
Though I don't know what Kuehnen is thinking about Kohlmann.

Yes, would be a great option, too, because such a well-working doubles team means something. Only risk is that Kas doesn't have the Davis Cup experience.

But against Spain, Kühnen needs a true and only doubles team that the singles players can rest on Saturday.

This line is totally out of place. :retard: They won 3-2 when we thought the worst possible outcome would be 4-1, and the conclusion of sport1 is that the nomination was right?

He was clearly the best server and also good on return. Just at the net he had a few weaker moments as always, but all in all probably the best player on court.
