For those to whom this applies: Keep in mind that the AO was played twice in 1977 (Jan and Dec.), and from 1978-1985 it was played in Dec. It was not played in 1986 at all, and went back to January in 1987. :)

Thank goodness there's someone as old as me ;)
I think the AO used to be held around and just after Christmas at that time. I'll check the ITF database.

Update: the AO 1969 was held in January, if that's your first slam (it's mine), but unfortunately they don't have records for tournaments before the Open Era.

There're AO in Jan and Dec 1977, so my guess is AO was played in Jan before 1978. It switched back to Jan in 1987. That's the reason no AO in the year of 1986.

Thanks, so it's Arthur Ashe for me (AO 1970). Good, it doesn't sound as ancient as Rod Laver.

I don't know why they switched the AO to December. Maybe because the players preferred to play in Dec (Jan is too early in the season)?

I'm 20 years old (yes really, TF), and I've been doing that for at least 7 years. Mind you, in my case that's probably the degenerative impact of television on the short-term memory, which tennis isn't helping the cause of much.

Eeeck! Our first 1990s baby.

*Rubs in wrinkle cream around eyes, makes an appointment for Botox injections, and becomes bitter over how time goes by so fast the older you get*

That is a lie we fool ourselves with so we will not freak out over our increasing feebleness. The older I get, the more often I walk into a room and immediately forget what I needed to do in said room.
lol, i think thats a sign of madness not age :p

That is, who won the first major played after you were born?

(Yes this is a completely useless thread).

Mine was Adriano Panatta. Vai!!!

Are you born in 1976? :)

Bjorn Borg

John McEnroe (USO 79)

the first that i'm aware of was Becker winning Wimbledon 85

hey that's cool, Wimbledon 85 was also for me the first grand slam I was fully aware of. I even remember myself playing tennis afterwards pretending to be Boris Becker. ;)

Yeah, the shifting dates make things tough. I wanted to say Wilander (AO 1983) but it looks like Roland Garros was the first Grand Slam that year (?) in which case it would be Yannick Noah.

Hey, you finally posted photos from your tennis trips! When did THAT happen? Do you still have originals?

I sure do. I'm still working on the videos part, I'll make an annoucement when that is done.
