Kitzbuhel ATP tournament might move to Mamaia, Romania

Ion Tiriac said a few days ago he will move the Kitzbuhel ATP tournament to Mamaia, Romania, starting next year. This will be the second ATP tournament organized in Romania, after Bucharest. Mamaia is a holiday resort at the seaside, right next to the city of Constanta. The construction of a modern tennis site already begun and is expected to be ready by spring.

I'm really excited about this news, but I am not sure how true it is. If any of you have any other informations.... please post them here...

Yeah, I think he is, but he DID say that, and he said many times before that he will move the tournament out of Kitzbuhel. And the construction of the tennis site in Mamaia did begin.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
*fingers crossed*

Tiriac doesn't run the ATP and he is in charge of the Madrid Masters. I actually think he is talking out of his arse and ISG events don't get moved easily, and it is not like Kitzbuhel is struggling.

I agree to 100%, Louise :yeah:

Kitzbühel is one of the nicest tournaments, please let it stay there :worship:

I have heard this from various sources now so I believe there is more than a grain of truth in it - but I don't know anything officially. I think it sounds fun - I've never been to Romania :)

There will be a legit announcement soon enough if anything like this happens, then again I heard they were trying to get rid of Båstad for years, but it didn't happen.

Bucharest doesn't even sell out, so why would it be moved to Romania?

Because Tiriac has the licence and he wants to. And because, in July, Mamaia is packed with tourists and there's a huge potential for big crowds at the tennis tournament.
And about Bucharest... this was the first time in the 10-year history of the tournament when the final weekend was completely sold out, many fans remaining outside for the semifinals, because there were no more tix. So things are definetely improving.

Tiriac is a mafioso, there are already plenty of tournaments on the beach at that time of the year. He actually should care about getting players to play at Madrid first and I remember his tirades about all the withdrawls.

It was because there were Romanians in the semi finals that's the reason the tickets sold out and 2 of them in the doubles final no other reason.

Thank you :)

And as for venues selling out - I don't think Kitz sells out either - especially in the earlier rounds - I've seen many empty seats there on webcams and photographs. And I know Tiriac is a pretty dubious character and won't be doing anything without lining his own pocket in the process  but I think it's good that he's trying to give something back to his own people and help the economy in his own country - good for him.

He has an orphanage in Brasov and a bank he is doing a lot to contribute to Romania. It's not like Kitz is losing money and as I said they couldn't get rid of Båstad when there was more reason to do so, then again maybe mafioso has sent some heavy characters to threaten the right people.

I've heard about this too and I'm really happy with the decision (tho Mamaia is even further away from me than Bucharest  about 600 km :( ) but I'm quite skeptical about the whole thing so I won't get too excited so I won't be too disappoimted.

I don't understand why some persons are going mad about the possibility of moving Kitzbuhel  .

Kitzbuhel is a tournament with usual bad weather :o , i would define it as a sad tournament and although it's an international series gold this year the main claycourters prefered to go to Umag instead of playing in kitzbuhel .

If ATP moves Kitzbuhel i don't think the rate of suicides will increase :silly:

Maybe ;) And I know I will be in a minority here - apart from the Romanians obviously - but I think it's a great idea :) . There is a big myth about Kitz as being "the" place to go for some people - and I don't deny it is a good party place and with beautiful scenery too of course - but I've heard quite bad reports about it from other points of view (players' facilities, organisation etc) Maybe a change would be good - mafioso or not!!!

I just hope this doesn't happen because Kitzbühel for me is such an awesome location and I would like to have it stay where it is currently.

Well, Kitzbühel didn't either this year. And it's not like that the concept with the night sessions there are a booming success. This approach may not be a reason pro or contra either side.

wrong, the weather is not worse than in other comparable middle european locations
the only thing in Kitzbühel is that the change of weather comes more unexpectedly from one minute to the other

Mamaia is cool too. Seaside, beaches, hotels, lots of tourists, the perfect place for a July holiday, spiced up with some quality tennis ;)

The question is how much money has it been losing in recent times, if it has been operating at huge losses constantly then something needs to be looked at, plus Umag has been getting some top players through better guarantees and the fact Moya invites his friends and they like it.

European summer well anything can happen at that time of year.

Is mafioso going to spend 3 million Euro on the Player Party to get them away from Umag if Kitz goes?

Umag and another mediterranean seaside town as for example Mamaia during the summer without no doubt they have better weather than Kitzbuhel. Sun all the day .

I know how the weather is at Austrian Alps on summer , one day you are under 10 ºC raining a lot and the next day you are over 30 ºC, and that's insane !!!

Mamaia is not a Meditterranean seaside town :p
I am not to excited about it being there, i wish it was closer to me esp. cos I'm not a fan of Romanian seaside but if it is really true I might go esp cos it's during the summer holiday. My mum didn't let me stay all week in Bucharest cos school had started.

i think it´d be really sad if kitzbühel was moved. i´ve been at the tournament last year and enjoeyd it so much. it´s great organized, the courts are great, you´re near to the players, and except of one day the weather was just perfect back then!
i think the organizers should think about taking money for all people that walk on the area...at least last year you could go and visit the practicing courts without paying anything. they might change that to get more money (if there´s really a big problem with money), esp. if they only take a little amount so that many people keep coming!

I totally agree with you Jule. Kitz is great and I would be very sad, too, if Kitz was moved to somewhere else - Kitz is one of my favourite touranments.

The Argentines love the tournament and do very well there, so it would be a big shame if Kitz disappeared from the tournament calender.

That would be great.I heard that on Kids day in bUcharest also and i am pretty sure it is true :D..there is no problem with money in Kitz ,Tiriac said he didnt agree on several stuff with the Austrian oragnizers.
The weather in Mamaia that time of the year it's great.
Bucharest did sell out this year.Maybe coz if the Romanians but i dint really think all people were the during the week just for Pavel and Hanescu.Last year the tix from Monday to Thursady were free so i tought this year no one will show up that time...but there were plenty on people ;)

I would also be very, very sad if this would really come true and the Kitzbuehel tournament would move to Mamaia

Okay, Kitz did not attract the best players in the past, but there are many other tournaments around the year which don´t do this either. And I highly doubt many big players would come to Mamaia  In my opinion, Kitzbuehel lives from the atmosphere and the great venue, so therefore a lot of players come back every year, though not the top stars.
I also have been there this year and for me it is one of the greatest tournaments on tour, exactly like Corinne said :yeah:

And I agree with Jules suggestion: If money should be the problem, there are a lot of things they can change in Kitzbuehel, take many for the practice courts and even make the tickets a bit more expensive.

They can do everything, just not give up this tournament :worship:
