Russia's Davis Cup Captain Shamil Tarpishchev.......

Did anyone watch the FED cup final yesterday. The Captain of the team, Shamil Tarpishchev (who is also the Davis Cup captain) was a joke. Myskina was really struggling out there and instead of encouraging her he had his head in his hands. I know she's a bit of a headcase, but its not as if Russia's team for the DC is full of mentally stable players. I just thought I'd point out it was disgraceful captaincy (I know they somehow managed to win it) but I felt sorry for Myskina, he was giving her absolutely no help. I expect better.

As well as DC 2002 and Fed Cup 2004. So Samil can't be that bad after all.

Shamil is the Mafia Don of Russian tennis, well his methods have worked and they won't give rid of him unless Putin sacks him.

I think that strategy works for the Russians, a little toughening never hurt anyone ;) Look at all the players who dont do well in 1 tie seem to really have something to prove in the next 1 and they almost always end up doing well.
I mean look at Momo she was getting encouraged, patted after every point and she still couldnt control her nerves.

They have booed Safin off the court in Russia before, so that's not unusual.

You complain about the Russian women and their egos I mean come on if Sharapova was in the team it would be worse, it's not like they need her.

Oh, btw, the Belgian sports minister had called Shamil T. yesterday and said they cannot wait for the next year's 1st rd Fed Cup tie in Belgium and both Kim & JuJu had agreed to play. Now THAT I'd like to see. :) Maybe also Kuzzie's comeback there. ;)
Oh, and Maria Sharapova is supposed to be in the Russian team next year. So we'll see.

We'll see soon enough and as for Shamil it was a smart decision to leave Kafelnikov out of the final match in 2002. He was in such bad form and thanks to Marat for killing Grosjean on court, that he could make that decision.

It will be interesting to see what team he puts out for the match against Croatia.

I didn't know they had ice rinks in Croatia, I am just thinking about the one they are using in Slovakia.

Is Tursunov in the team ? That would be interesting if he played for sure.

MariaV

Yeah, Tursunov is the 4th guy in the team for the tie. If Kolya's not fit enough he might get a chance. But Misha & Igor are ahead of him of course.
I still didn't find any news on Kolya's health in the Russian news. :(

Tursunov is on team, suprised me also when his name came up
guess he got fed up of trying to get US Passport, still that doesnt change a thing, or it shouldnt, its not like he was ever gonna be picked for US DC team.
He still lives in CA.

Shamil hasn't done so bad so far ;) Not all players appreciate some in-your-face coach screaming at them at the change of ends - some prefer to meditate/concentrate/keep themselves to themselves. Anastasia always looks desparately at her corner when things aren't going right - it's part of her character - and what could he have done yesterday anyway - gone out there and played for her?

Yes, I just checked the DC site and he is there for sure. He could definitely on this surface be very dangerous, and you're right he won't get picked for the US Davis Cup team, and I wonder if he speaks Russian with an American accent these days?

I noticed Youzhny and Tursunov played doubles together in Bejiing and were the runners up. I imagine they teamed up in Bejiing to prepare for their up coming vital Davis Cup doubles match against Croatia.

And no one deserves to be a Fed Cup champion more than The Darling One Elena Dementieva. :) :smooch: Well done Elena! :bounce:

Anybody can get the job done if he/she has about 8 good players to pick from. It's not a secret Russian tennis has depth.
Tarpischev picked Vera D on clay :o and that didn't stop Russia to claim the title.
Regarding Sharapova he keeps saying everything will be fine, that they had bigger problems along the time and solved them all.
Altough she failed in her 2 rubbers Nastya is no pushover in the Fed Cup team for next year, that if she'll want to play...

Nothing wrong with Tarpishev's methods. They work. Actually a guy like Goven should be fired. But the French coaches will always go the "we're a united team, i'll support you no matter what" route rightly or wrongly... It's cultural i've come to think. But Goven is just bad at it. A pale copy of Forget and Noah who he tries to imitate in vain IMO.
Too bad Forget didn't accept to still captain the French Fed Cup team as well as the DC team and Noah was great too.
But i think this kind of behavior in sports from the Russian coaches has a lot to do with the Russian culture and habits. Some ppl told me that but i don't know if it's true.
