Your Favorite Major (overall) of 2005

Each Grand Slam tournament has its stories and charm. Which one was your favorite in 2005? Not just the final, or one particular match, but the whole 2-week extravaganza!

Australian Open: Safin comes back, conquers Federer, Demons
French Open: Nadal Takes Title and Tennis World by Storm
Wimbledon: Federer Three-peats
U.S. Open: Agassi, Blake, et. al Come Back, But Fed Reigns Again

I am torn because, my man Marat triumphed in Australia - beating Federer on the way. But, for its wealth of comeback stories and all around good feelings (and weather), I have to vote for the 2005 U.S. Open.

In terms of the story, US Open, because of Agassi's effort at 35 to reach the final, and Blake's first major breakthrough at a Slam after his injuries. AO also comes close because of Safin finally winning his 2nd.
In terms of excitement and quality of matches, AO has to win.

This was a fantastic USO. Great weather (go drought!) :rain: and so many thrilling five-setters.

The USO- upsets, thrilling and long matches even if the ending was a bit anticlimatic for me.

The USO. Best stories, best breakthroughs, best memorable matches, best weather, brilliant final, it had it all.

The USO died for me after Friday. It was good stuff up until then, though ;)

I vote for RG,and you all know why.

I vote for US open and, second, Aussie Open.
The worst, by far, was Wimbledon. Extremely predictable and boring.

The AO and USO undoubtedly had the best matches. The AO was the only Slam where the eventual winner had great matches as well, which is fairly important for the game - but I still preferred a few of the five-setters in New York, especially Sanguinetti-Srichaphan and Ginepri-Gasquet, so that one gets my vote.

The Australian Open, no question. The end result wasn't what I wanted, but the matches were absolutely fantastic. Safin-Federer, Hewitt-Roddick, Hewitt-Nalbandian, Hewitt-Nadal, Nadal-Youzhny, Blake-Hewitt - just a ton of really entertaining matches.

The US Open was probably second - again lots of high quality, including, of course, Blake-Agassi, and Sanguinetti-Srichaphan.

I agree. The Aussie Open was chock full of great matches. The only bad thing about the Aussie Open was that sometimes I didn't have the patience to watch on Tivo and would watch live if I was home so I was a wreck at work for two weeks.

I thought Wimby and the USO tied, Wimby as it had Andy's breakthrough plus the likes of Gonzalez did well, and there were a few surprises aside from Fed winning.

The USO too, Andre doing his stuff, and Blake and Ginepri fulfilling their talents.

The US Open was the greatest slam this year with:

Blake-Nadal
Agassi-Blake
Federer-Agassi

Agassi-Blake was one of the greatest matches that I have seen in many years and I think that this was the greatest match of the slam. Agassi has had one of the best years of his career.

USO because I got to see some of it live. :) The great weather helped a lot too. There was something like 45 minutes total of delay and that was on the first Wednesday at night.

For me it's a toss up between AO and USO. Wimbledon kind of sucked this year and I didn't see Roland Garros so I can't comment on it.

Rafa = Fed Killa
09-17-2005, 03:01 AM
Roland Garros is first in my mind. (New star is born - Rafa :worship: )

U.S. open is second. (Amazing matches. Agassi's great run)

A.O. is third. (The Safin-Federer match was amazing)

Wimbledon is last. (Same old final; Roddick-Federer too one sided)

USO. As wonderful as having Rafa win RG was, USO had a ton of fantastic matches. Every single day of USO was great great tennis.

I loved Roland Garros. Watching Rafa win and like, take over tennis was great.

The USO was great too, lots of thrilling 5 setters (Sanguinetti-Srichaphan, Blake-Agassi) and great comeback stories and runs (Blake and Agassi) :)

1- US open : new come backs ,new players coming up , Agassi 's playing and finally the most favorite winner for me.. :)

2 -Roland Garros...with Nadal winning it, i enjoyed it a lot..

3- Wimbledon..Federer was at his best i think..

well, i guess i am not very good at picking one choice ... :)

US Open...some cracking matches like Ginepri-Coria (noone ever mentions it)...were coria saved about loads of mps before Ginepri eventually won...utter classic.

Plus the fans added more to it then any other slam

Im gonna go with Australian Open. Ive been waiting for years for Safin to win his next slam. And he did it in the perfect way, he took out Federer on his way. Its not like Federer got defeated by someone else, so Safin beating him made it so sweet. Then Im gonna go with french, Nadal winning was awesome, and clays my favorite surface so being able to watch two weeks of that is great. I didnt really enjoy the USO. I mean it started of horribly Andy going out in the first round (and ferrero). I was sick of all the americans. First Blake took out Nadal, Ginepri took out Gasquet. I think Richard could of won if it hadnt of been for his elbow. Oh ya Marat wasnt even in it at all so that sucked. And then Federer wins the final. boring! I really wanted Agassi to win, he was the only american besides Andy that I actually liked.

I would go with FO. In sport, there's nothing more exciting than the arrival of a new talent. Nadal entered FO as the rising superstar and he didn't let fans down and along the way beat Federer. Had Nadal lost, the year would have been just same old same old.

Second would be USO, only because I was there :) Third AO and Wimby last.

1. Oz :worship: Great matches.. well, some of you have mention it all. And the result was superb... Safin! Beat "the GREATEST" Fed and "Local Hero" Hewitt back to back!

2. USO  Full of drama! And Agassi was unbelievable. Fed gets a supremacy

3. FO :o mmmmh... oke, another clay court king win and this is his first major. Is that a surprise?

4. Wimbledon :retard:  :awww:  Thank God for the exciting women :worship:

Aussie Open was good for me, Safin won.
Wimbledon was good too, although it would have been better is Andy would have beat Jesus Fed :p
US Open sucked since Andy was an idiot and lost 1st round.
Roland Garros, I didn't pay much attention because I was too busy with work and school.

It's tough to chose between my first two, but I'll go with...

#1 - Australian

#2 - French

#3 - Wimbledon

#4 - US Open (I know there were some great matches, but unfortunately, most of them ended with the guy I was rooting for losing, so that kind of put a damper on it for me.)

i enjoyed the AUS Open most of all (bcoz the person i was rooting for won)

Australian Open was the only one that had me on the edge of my seat. I didn't see RG, and what I saw of the other two sucked, But Wimbledon will be my number 2 because of the kick ass Federer-Ferrero match, and 3 will be the USO

1. Australian Open: this is a no-brainer, just Safin-Federer alone wins it, but there were so many great matches between top players. Semi finals with the top 4 of the world in it, it just doesn't get any better than this.

2. US Open: also lots of exciting stuff, especially in the 2nd week. Blake-Agassi is the 2nd best GS match of the year and would have won if it weren't for Safin-Federer. Only slight disappointment was the absence of Safin and the early exit of Roddick. The anticipation of a Agassi-Roddick match is just slighty higher than that of a Agassi-Ginepri match.

3. Roland Garros: saved by some great matches by Puerta in the quarters and semis. First of all Nadal-Gasquet didn't live up to its hype. Second, very early on it was clear there was only ever gonna be one match in this tournament and as it turned out that match sucked. Some good matches, but nothing close to Aus or US in terms of excitement.

4. Wimbledon: what can I say? I did enjoy Federer's play in the last couple of matches, but there was only ever gonna be one winner. And there weren't any quality matches either. Roddick was out of sorts, Hewitt was just scratching to get to the semis (to get slaughtered) and both Safin and Nadal are no grasscourt players. Really boring, but hey, Federer won so I'm happy ;)

co-winners: AO/USO : to hard for me to pick between the match of the year Safin-Federer SF, with drama and titan battling, and Agassi's run including the memorable Blake match and good finals.
Wimby comes next as Fed was on his cloud and showed out-of-this-world tennis against Ferrero and Roddick.
RG was a disapointment because Nadal won it too easily and Roger wasn't the challenger he should have been in that semi...

AO hands down

Safin v Federer will remain, for the rest of my days, as one of the greatest matches I've ever had the privilege of watching.

And Lleytons run was just incredible....one brutal encounter after another, so much drama, so much fight and heart to keep it up even with his injury.

And there was even something to cheer about on the womens side, Alicia doing so well to get through to the qf and then coming so close to taking out Davenport....if only that ace hadnt been called out, who knows what mightve happened :)

Not only is it the best Slam of the year for me, but so far its probably the best slam I've ever followed

Hey I'm like the unpatriotic aussie, and even I'll admit, the Australian Open 2005 was f*****g brilliant. And I'm also a hewitt hater, but god he made this tournament this year. We all remember Blake with the come on imitation, Chela with the spitting, Nadal with the battle of the biceps/bumpickers (as I prefer to call it) and the nudging on the shoulder by Nalby which was the catalyst for that great Davis Cup drama against the Argentines. And then to see Hewitt lose the final was just magnificent  Then we had the other great matches like Agassi-Johansson, Johansson-Lopez, Federer-Safin, Nadal-Hewitt was great, and then Hewitt-Safin. And it was my first tournament and I got to see JC for the first time, but god this tournament was FANTASTIC!!!
