BEIJING, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero won a battle of attrition with Argentine David Nalbandian 6-2 3-6 6-3 to advance to the China Open semi-finals on Friday.

The sixth seed prevailed after a dour baseline struggle, breaking third seed Nalbandian to go up 5-3 in the third set and closing out with a big serve on his first match point.

Former world number one Ferrero will play either fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal or Dutchman Peter Wessels in Saturday's semi-finals in Beijing.

"I lost both times I played Nalbandian before but they were close matches," said Ferrero, seeking to return to the top of the game after an injury-ravaged 2004. "Today I was very solid."

He added: "I missed so much of last season. It's like I'm starting my career again. I'm confident I can get back into the top 10 soon."

Top seed Nadal plays Wessels in Friday's night session after winning his rain-delayed second round match earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Swede Thomas Johansson overpowered eighth seed Carlos Moya 7-6 6-3 to set up a semi-final against either second seed Guillermo Coria or last year's runner-up Mikhail Youzhny.

Fourth seed Johansson quickly pressed home his advantage after taking the first set tiebreak 7-3, finishing in style with his fourth ace after 76 minutes.

Coria's second round match was also washed out on Thursday and the Argentine trounced Japan's Toshihide Matsui 6-1 6-0 on Friday morning to reach the last eight.

French Open champion Nadal took more than two and a half hours to beat American Justin Gimelstob 5-7 6-4 6-4.

The Spanish teenager is bidding to win his 10th title of the year on his first visit to Asia.
