Andre Agassi has entered the if...Stockholm Open played from the 10th to the 16th October on Indoor Hard. Agassi reached last years final, losing to Thomas Johansson in three sets. It will be Agassi's first tournament loss since losing to Roger Federer in the final of the US Open.

Here is the news from the tournament website:

http://www.stockholmopen.se/t3.asp?p=39340&x=1&a=179294

Agassi back in Stockholm
The american super star, Andre Agassi, will return to the capital of Sweden and has signed up for the if... Stockholm Open. Agassi lost against Thomas Johansson in an epic final last year in Stockholm.

- It is nice to welcome Agassi and many other good players back to Stockholm, said Per Hjertquist, the Tournament Director of the if... Stockholm Open.

Many excellent competitors will play in the tournament this year and the cut off is as low as 61. French teen sensations, Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils, will challenge Agassi as well as the former champion, Paradorn Srichaphan and the Olympic gold medallist, Nicolas Massu.

Thomas Johansson and Robin Soderling are the only Swedes yet to qualify for the main draw. Johansson is the reigning champion after defeating Agassi in the final set tiebreaker last year. Soderling had his breakthrough in Stockholm two yars ago when the young baseliner reached the final.

However, the in form home favourite, Jonas Bjorkman, did not make the cut. The experienced Swede will have to hope for one of three wildcards to the tournament.

He will win it and also qualify for the Masters Cup. He is playing at a very high level.
Should have beaten Feds at the Open. Got mentally tired after a series of 5 setters.

Andre , enjoy your European holiday.

Andre is evidently very healthy physically. He is just mentally drained after those tough matches at the Open. A few weeks rest will get him mentally charged for the European Indoor Season. He is scheduled to play Stockholm, Madrid and Paris. His cortisone injection which he had after LA is working fine still. Another one is planned in December just before Australia 2006. Gil Raes spoke to BBC Radio Five Live yesterday.

Thanks for the extra info. I'm glad the cortisone shots are still helping him keep fit so that he can continue to play at a high level. Good luck to him in Sweden, Madrid, and Paris.

It does look like the Masters Cup is a great possibility now. Andre has to watch out for Coria, Davydenko and Safin who are hot on his heels, but Andre himself is closing in on Hewitt in the race. Hewitt will only be playing Madrid and Paris. Coria and Davydenko generally play a lot of tournaments, so they will be dangerous. Safin is injured, and remember he has loads of points to defend at Madrid and Paris (won them both last year). So Shanghai looks a real possibility. It would be Andre's third tournament in Shanghai. He played the Heineken Open in 2001, losing to Irakli Labadze in Round One. He also played the Masters Cup there in 2002, losing to Ferrero and Novak. Agassi has won the Masters Cup in 1990 (d. Edberg) and three times finalist, 1999 (l. Sampras), 2000 (l. Kuerten) and 2003 (l. Federer). Agassi skipped last years Championships due to injury.

Well, Andre didn't exactly skip the MSC last year because of injury. While he finished 8th, Gaudio got the last slot due to his French Open win. Andre chose not to go to Houston as an alternate, which is quite understandable...

Safin's already qualified due to winning the Aus Open.

The worst we as fans can do as assume this complacent outlook - at his age and with the seriousness of his injury, it's truly a DAY-TO-DAY thing for Andre.

Let's just be glad he had a GREAT US Open run when most tennis experts, including Gil Reyes, thought his career was over in May... and cross our fingers so he could play reasonably well in Stockholm.

Aussie Open? It might as well be in 2106 - that's how uncertain things are at this point, no matter what Gil Reyes may be saying.

I noticed some interesting stats this afternoon....

Andre needs only 8 match wins to go into third place all time (behind only Lendl and Connors)... (I think Andre is at 860...and Mac has 867)...

And Andre already has 26 times when he has reached a semi-final or better in a Slam...ONLY 2 players have better (Lendl at 28 and Connors at 31! Considering that Andre actually willfully skipped about 15 Slams (ost with no injury...just DNP), that's an INCREDIBLE stat!!! No wonder he's a living legend!!

Andre is all but certain to end the year in the Top-10...that would make 16 years in the top-10...tying Connors record (Connors 16 years were successive).....Andre from '88- '92 (missed '93 with wrist issues/surgery)...'94-'96 (missed '97 with "Brooke issues."...and then '98-'05.

Andre is THE OLDEST player to hold the # 1 ranking at age 33!!!

Connors was quoted as saying in 1999 that "Agassi doesn't belong in the same breath with him (Connors) and Mac and Lendl...", suggesting that the three of them had achievements that Andre would never sniff...Wrong, once again, Mr. Connors!!!

Go Andre!!!

It really doesn't matter when Andre chooses to retire...I am sure that he has the best of expert opinions concerning his body...he has already played well beyond those of us who love him have dared to dream!!!

Andre is blessed to have such care-givers and advisors as his team: Reyes, Cahill, Rogers, and of, course, Steffi! And we as fans have been abundantly blessed to have had him for almost 20 years!!

I just wish I could have been in Arthur Ashe Stadium over the past weekend to hear 20,000+ fans seranade him (winning or losing) with chants of "Andre, Andre!" I hope that LOVE rings in his ears for many years to come!!

Your absolutely right. We shouldn't be complacent. But Andre's injury is obviously holding up or he wouldn't be committed to play Stockholm would he?

. But Andre's injury is obviously holding up or he wouldn't be committed to play Stockholm would he?

No, there is nothing "obvious" about it. This isn't some small back muscle pull. And cortisone is not some magical potion, and things may deteriorate at ANY point.

So, if I were you, I'd be ecstatic he is even still playing and would literally approach the whole thing on match-to-match basis - as in, "Andre moved and struck the ball surpringly well today; hopefully he still has something left for tomorrow..."

I wouldn't even be dreaming about YEC/Masters Cup let alone Australia Open. Too far off and too many things may change. If Andre somehow stays healthy and sneaks up on everyone in Melbourne, winning the whole thing... then, that's fantastic! Just don't expect it.

IMMORTALCHAMP
09-17-2005, 05:32 PM
If he was to win the Australian Open it would give Agassi even more motivation to play on because he would be just one slam away from making it 10. Cortisone may not be a magical potion but the last injection he had was July and the next injection is scheduled to be December, so it seems to last a long time. The doctors said he can have 4 per year.

Andre just withdrew from Stockholm and might not play again in '05, and perhaps beyond. Now do you understand what the "day-to-day" thing really means - if you didn't in 2004 and 2005, I mean?

Cortisone is not the elixir of greatness; it's merely one of the last options of desperation at an athlete's disposal. If the disc in Andre's back is indeed herniated, he's done.

It certainly is a shame Andre pulled out, BUT I believe that tactically, his body is still worn out from US Open. He may skip Madrid or Paris, but should have enough points for TMC at end of year. Andre only said on Tuesday he WILL play in 2006, so I think pulling out of Stockholm is a precaution. We will see him next year.
