Andy murray trains in Barcelona but i think clay is his worst surface. He has a very good serve and a decent forehand and a mediocure backhand. His speed around the court isn't great and his stamina is awefull. His game is made for fast surfaces such as hardcourt/fast indoor, so I think it was wise from the Swiss to choose clay indoors as surface. Also because rusedski sucks at clay and it is wawrinka best surface. I think the swiss will win 4-1 or mayby even 5-0.

Minnie
09-18-2005, 10:37 PM
I thought Andy Murray has said that clay is his best surface ... though I've never seen him play on it. I also think his stamina is improving all the time. I've no idea who will be playing who in the tie - I was rather hoping Murray would be up against Roger - just for the experience (some would say the experience of being wiped off the court!!). But I've heard that probably isn't going to happen. Anyway, I'm taking the day off work as the BBC are showing 6 hours of tennis on Friday afternoon. But this is one occasion when I won't be on Roger's side - with apologies to all his other fans here - and to Roger, though I know he'd perfectly understand! I don't expect GB to win but will have fun with friends at our house yelling at the TV! Good luck to the 2 teams - hope we get some good tennis.

Isn't Roger part-Brit? I read it on the BBC in the run-up to the 2004 Wimbledon, I think -- that in their perennial frustration at a Brit failing to take the title since how-long-exactly, they should resort to convincing Roger to switch citizenship, his maternal great-grandmother being Brit. Got a good chuckle over that one.

Federer relishing Davis Cup return

GENEVA, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Britain's Davis Cup team will have history on their side this weekend when they take on Switzerland in a bid to rejoin the world's top 16 nations.

Unfortunately though for the British, their opponents will have a certain Roger Federer on their side.

Britain have won all three of their previous Davis Cup encounters with Switzerland -- dropping only one rubber in the process -- but the world number one's return to the Swiss squad has clearly stacked the odds in favour of the home team.

"The Davis Cup has always been quite special for me because playing for your country is totally different than playing for your own name," the six-time grand slam champion told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

"Of course we'll be the favourites with me as the world number one and us playing at home and on clay, which is not usually the British players' favourite surface, so there are definitely many things working against them in this tie.

"At the same time (Andrew) Murray is coming along and Greg (Rusedski) has had a pretty good summer so they will know they have a chance to pull off an upset. We just have to make sure that we close them out in time."

Despite his professed enjoyment of this team competition, Federer has not let the Davis Cup get in the way of his individual ambitions on the ATP Tour.

It is likely that the Swiss would not even be fighting to retain their World Group status if Federer had chosen to take part in Switzerland's first round tie against the Netherlands in March.

RANKING PRIORITY

"Missing that tie was not an easy decision for me, especially when we have good young players like (Swiss number two) Stanislas Wawrinka coming through to strengthen the squad," Federer said.

"But for me the big, big focus of the year was holding on to the number one position and playing another great year of tennis which was a decision that the team totally understood.

"I've already managed to achieve my goals for this year, by winning two grand slams and 10 tournaments so far, so now anything else that comes along is a bonus."

Federer is, of course, not the only player to have put individual needs ahead of Davis Cup duties -- the British squad are themselves having to do without the services of national number one Tim Henman, who announced his retirement from the competition in January.

"Henman was playing Davis Cup for 10 years, so I think his decision was totally understandable," Federer reckoned.

"At some point it's probably best to decide that you're not going to play, rather than trying to come in and out of the team.

"There will always be people who don't understand, although I think being world number one has helped spare me a lot of criticism. Personally I would like to see the Davis Cup being played every two years, which would give everybody a much bigger chance to take part."

Federer has yet to decide about his Davis Cup commitments for next year, saying on Tuesday that a lot would depend on this weekend's result and who the Swiss are drawn against in 2006.

His motivation for this weekend seems strong enough, however, with the world number one confident that at least one aspect of the Davis Cup tie will be more enjoyable than this month's U.S. Open triumph.

"What I'm looking forward to most this weekend is the home support," Federer said with a grin.

"What I faced in the U.S. Open final with 23,000 spectators all backing (Andre) Agassi to win, was really quite tough. After that it's going to be nice to be back on home soil."

The idea is that Mackin is a sacrificial lamb and Murray will beat Wawrinka. Then a fresh Rusedski will team up with Murray to win the doubles, so that GB lead 2-1. On Sunday in the reverse singles Murray will have a go at Federer, and even if he doesn't win, Bates still has another chance by substituting Mackin with Rusedski to play Wawrinka in the final rubber.

Of course not ;) I didn't say he could do anything else, he tried the only thing he could do, we'll see what happens... But I (personal thought) don't think it will change something... Yeah maybe Switzerland will win 3-1 or 3-2 instead of 3-0 or smth but in the end I don't see the Brits winning this tie, that's my opinion

Hi everyone. :)

Here is what Jeremy Bates said on DC's website:

Bates admitted that his team selection is a gamble but said he had little option but try and expose Wawrinka, the team’s weaker singles link. “We’ve obviously got a tremendously difficult task to try and beat Switzerland with Federer and I have to look at it realistically and try and work out the best way of getting the three points that we need,” (In other words, he is going to do whatever he can to win the 2 singles matches that doesn't involve Roger and the doubles match, which he explains after) said Bates. “On paper it looks as though we will have to beat their No.2 player twice and win the doubles, though we will try and throw everything we can at Federer as well. I think that having Andy playing Wawrinka in the first match on Friday is something they weren’t expecting and it reverses the situation and puts a lot of pressure on Wawrinka because he’s never won a Davis Cup match before. I think this is the best format we can use to try and win the tie.”

I think he explained his strategy pretty well. They are going to put all the pressure on Wawrinka and make him work.

This is what Roger said:

“I was surprised, though I wouldn’t say I was shocked,” said Federer. “It’s much harder for Stan than for me because he has been preparing for Rusedski and practicing with lefties. I don’t know that much about Mackin but I guess he will want to be on the baseline a lot. The danger for me is in not knowing much about him or how he plays. I will have to do some scouting but in the end I will have to rely on my own strengths and normally that’s enough. All I care about is getting the first point for us. I haven’t played on home soil for a while and this tie really means a lot to me because I’m very pleased to be playing in Switzerland again. I am prepared to win three matches and if Stan wins one as well, that’s great.”

“Davis Cup is always a bit of a tactical game,” said Federer. “That’s what makes it so interesting.”

Should be an interesting tie. If all things go well, they should be able to win the tie, and I hope they do.

The first match Roger-Macking starts at 1 PM Swiss time tomorrow (Friday), so for you (in Menphis?) 5 or 6 AM tomorrow, I think.

Some people are talking (especially in GM) about Stan's pressure, but he says in the interview with SFDRS that he doesn't have pressure because they have Roger. Go Roger and Stan!!!!!!! :bounce:

Well that is an interesting tactic. Hope Stan can win one of his matches. I am a bit nervous as I always am about Roger's matches but I have fiath that he can win his matches. Does anyone know anything about Mackin? He and Roger have never played before; but, what kind of game does Mackin have?

I honestly have no clue, but this article should give us some idea of what we should be expecting from him, posted by Sjengster in the GM forums:

THE arithmetic is simple: to win a Davis Cup tie you must take three out of the five points on offer. The achievement, however, is less straightforward, particularly when the opposing team includes Roger Federer.

Jeremy Bates, the Great Britain team captain, has known for some time that Federer would be in the Swiss team for the World Group play-off match which begins here today, and he has also been sure that Federer would play two singles matches and the sole doubles contest. His deliberations have therefore focused on one question: how do you prevent Federer from taking the three points which will give the home side the victory and keep Britain in the competition's second division for another year?

The answer, phrased diplomatically by Bates but more starkly by Andy Murray after yesterday's draw, is that you concentrate on beating the world No1 in the doubles. And your best chance of doing so is to ensure that he has as much as possible taken out of him in the first day's singles.

Enter Alan Mackin. The Scot is under no pressure to defeat Federer, but he will take to the court today with clear instructions to frustrate his opponent by sticking in the contest for as long as possible, by lengthening rallies and generally getting up the great man's nose.

It is a task which the man from Paisley will relish. He has not won a match on the main tour this year, which, while not ideal, has at least given him some practice at what he will attempt today: dragging out defeats for as long as possible.

Of course, Bates' explanation for his team selection did not go so far as branding Mackin a sacrificial lamb, but if the aim had been to give the team the best chance of beating Federer first up he would surely have chosen Greg Rusedski for the task instead. "Looking at the tie realistically, we're looking at winning the doubles, beating their No2 player, and getting something from Federer as well," Bates said.

Murray's version did not bother with the vague notion of "getting something. We have to take two points off [Stanislas] Wawrinka and win the doubles," he said. He will, of course, go out to win when he meets Federer in Sunday's first match, but he and his colleagues have all accepted that the team strategy comes before individual bids for glory.

Where that strategy could come unstuck, however, is the belief that Wawrinka, who plays Murray this afternoon, then either Mackin or more likely Rusedski in the last match of the tie on Sunday, may be a soft touch. "I think there's a lot of pressure on Wawrinka," Bates said - a statement which could prove mistaken on two related counts.

First, Yves Allegro, Federer's partner in tomorrow's doubles against Murray and Rusedski, may well be the one to feel the heat as he attempts to prove himself a worthy partner for the three-times Wimbledon champion. Second, Wawrinka could, like Mackin, feel the benefit of being written off, and go out and play with a real relish for the contest.

What is more, just because Wawrinka is barely known outside Switzerland is no reason to presume that two Britons can defeat him. The 20-year-old from Lausanne began 2005 ranked 184th in the world but is currently up at No53, so he must have been doing something right this year.

Wawrinka will, however, have to show some unexpected adaptability when he meets Murray today. Having practised against left-handers in the expectation of facing Rusedski, he rushed off after the draw to get some court time in against right-handers.

The British selection was, indeed, a surprise to the whole Swiss team, as Federer said. "I was surprised, yes. Obviously you always keep in mind what chances are there, but this team selection I was particularly surprised by. I thought they might leave Murray out on the first two. I'm pleased I don't have to play him on the first day, and I think Stan is pleased to play Murray, not Rusedski."

While he admitted he knew next to nothing about Mackin, Federer revealed he had paid a fair bit of attention to Murray's remarkable rise. "He is young, and is improving day by day, week by week. month by month. He gains every time he steps on court now because he can learn from all the matches he plays against top players.

"While he can still improve, and needs some more time to work on his fitness, the expectations are high. He's going to be great to watch at Wimbledon in particular for years to come."

Federer should be too, and one thing Mackin cannot afford to do against him this afternoon is stand back awestruck by his shotmaking. Bates has drummed into him the notion that, to have any chance of turning it into a genuine match rather than a mere demonstration of Federer's imperious grace, he has to rise above himself.

"I've talked to Alan a lot about how you have to try to play up to the level of someone like that. You've got to have a lot of heart, take the chances when they present themselves, and play with a lot of aggression."

Mackin can do that all right, but he and his colleagues also display a range of other emotions which were rarely glimpsed when Team GB was composed solely of the uneasy alliance between Rusedski and Tim Henman. They are a committed collective who play with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm, as they showed in their last tie against Israel. If they are to win here as they did in Tel Aviv, though, they may well require a substantial slice of good fortune as well.

I missed the matches this afternoon. I can't wait to see the highlights tonight!!!!!!

I will put the video links of highlights and excerpts of the matches in the Swiss Davis Cup Team thread in Tennis Switzerland forum as soon as they are available. That was actually the Swiss Davis Cup thread, but few people visit there. I want it to be active, so if you are interested, you can see the videos in that thread.

Roger blowed Mackin off the court. It was pity to see Mackin trying to win points and nearly never managing to do it. Roger... what can I say... played reaaaaaaaally well, topclass game, a dreamy bakchand and serve... WOW! Thanks to God for having created such a player

Stan, you are THA man :rocker2: We had faith in you, all the Swiss people cheering in the Palexpo and all the ones cheering for Switzerland around the world and you didn't disappoint us. Sure you made loads of errors, but who doesn't? You simply played great when you had to (down 4-1 in TB and winning it, down 2-0 beginning of 3rd set and winning it) :worship: I am so proud of what you have done little boy :yeah: 1st win in a DC match and not against the weakest opponent (though, judging by his claycourt game, I don't understand how Murray could make it to the SF of the FO Junior this year  He has a good serve and the dropshots, that's all!)

 SWITZERLAND

And thanks guys for cheering in here, keep it up tomorrow and on Sunday :bounce:

Davis cup audio from the BBC. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/4277970.stm

According to the DC website scoreboard it's 5-5 1st set. SUI was up 15-40 on GBR...could've won the set 6-4.

nobama
09-24-2005, 11:55 AM
According to the BBC commentators it's an even match so far with both teams attacking the other. C'mon boys, don't give 'em the first set!

Commentators now saying Roger likes playing GBR because all the media follows them over and the BBC is there so he gets to show off his many talents to a wider audience. Also talking about what a good guy he is and if he ever sounds a bit arrogant, he has a right to.

nobama
09-24-2005, 12:03 PM
If Switzerland wins today do they still play tomorrow? Do they play dead rubbers?
