The British women are not too bad. I actually met a few girls on the Cuban, British and Italian women's teams at Hong Kong airport 2 months ago. They were in town for a World Cup meeting. I have never been amongst so many tall women in my life .

As for the men, well... :drink:

hehe :yeah: I saw the Russians back in 1999 (I think!?) play against Australia or some better nation. They were awesome. They were like... the Roger Federers of Volleyball. I absolutely loved it! Over here, whenever I'd mention that I played volleyball for 5 years they'd be saying "Ohh...beach volleyball? cool!" Tsk. I like the volleyball where you dive to pick up a spike...falling on the hard floor. :D I miss it

I've been playing for volleyball for around 6 years, although I'm nowhere near committed to it as my swimming or tennis :p, I've played mainly with school and a mens league on weeknights.

I liken mens' volleyball to womens tennis. There are a few countries at the top who can gave good games amongst themselves, but will annihilate any weaker countries. The good countries being Russia, Italy, Serbia&Montenegro and Brazil - I think you would find that the past few Olympics and World Champs, World Cups and any other major tournaments have been shared amongst them.

The Marat Safin's of volleyball don't do it for you?

Against the Novice Croat team the other day, the Russians were comfortable enough at 2 sets to 1 up, before losing the 4th and being down in the middle of the 5th - only to win the last 7 points of the match and save themselves from embarrassment.

semi final 1: Russia v Espana

In true Safin style, the Safins found themselves behind early in the first set - so what do they do? they tank it.

the 2nd set was a real dogfight, and despite finding themselves down by a break on several occasions, the Safins managed to stave off a couple set points to take the set 27-25.

The Safins then played some solid volleyball in the 3rd, destroying their opponents, to go up 2 sets to 1.

Then what do the Safins do? They think it's a good time to have a rest for their efforts. They lose the 4th set rather easily.

5th set: Espana jumps out of the blocks and gains 4 point lead. At Espana 13-9 it looked all over the Safins, but they reeled in the final 6 points to win the match 15-13 in the 5th.

they will now meet either Italia or Serbia in the final.

Back to the topic, aww I love volleyball and like I posted on the wta forums, its all about the relationship and interactions of the setter the hitters and the defensive line. If you leave any holes open the competition will swallow you whole. If you dont have blockers it doesnt matter if you have servers who can go 120kphs like some of the cuban players. If you dont have good servers, it doesnt matter if you have good blockers, its all about team work and strategy, usually a team with solid setters and good hitters always wins.

KFB
09-27-2005, 01:28 PM
Yeah, volleyball it is kind simple to understand. It begins with a good reception, so the setter can use the centers and doing this he will confuse the other team's block and thus liberating the others hitters. No good receptionb no gain.
