Isn't that pic from the Wimbledon final this year? I think so.

Well, I like Oli, but beat him good and in straights, Roger! Fed won both tournaments he played against Oli Rochus this year, both in the US hardcourts (Miami and Cincinnati)! :yeah:

This is an other matchup,I don´t particuarly like :(
I like Rochus,as well as Santoro, but somehow with both of them you get the feeling, that one day, they will just hit one out of the ball park - and both would deserve it,againgst someone else!

Sorry, I forgot about those of you overseas... :awww:
But night matches are the most fun, and it's just so cool that Roger's the only mens player so far to get two night matches...and in a row! I don't know if it was the plan all along or if his match against Santoro made them decide to put him on at night again. With the exception of Blake/Nadal, that was the loudest crowd so far at the USO.

Yeah another Night match for Ninja. Boy he is doing many of his objectives during this mission at night time. ;)I'm wondering now if the put him on at night because the day matches are broadcast on CBS. Since Venus and Serena are playing their match during the day. Do we know for sure that Roger plays again on Monday? Even if he does, I think he can handle back to back matches. He'd probably rather have that than the stupid 3 days off earlier in the tourny.

Maybe they will have Roger play on Monday night....but so far it doesn't show that.Where are you seeing the schedule for tomorrow? I wonder too when Roger will play next (if he wins, of course). When I posted here that he was playing another night match, someone commented on him having to play at night and then again right away on Monday. There's no way he'd play on a court other than AA, and I doubt he'll get three in a row at night, so maybe he's playing on Tuesday?

I'm really starting to sweat blood that they're not going to show much of it. If they're going to sacrifice the first set to 2 players that Nobody gives a goddamn about, they may cut away after the 2nd set to show Gonzo's match. Rather rude, after the endless hours they've devoted to dismal tennis by AR & Ginepri. At least they could pay us back by showing some beautiful stuff.

Ok, now shut the hell up & start showing us Roger v. The Dwarf.

Hound, I don't mind that they cut to the Sanguinetti match at the fag end of a fifth set.. but they had enough time when that match ended to cut back to Ashe and show the Roger match. He had just broken for 5-3 and it would ahve been fine to start by showing him serving for the set.

But no, they show lengthy ads.... then they come back, show player profiles.... then an ad again OH STUPID USA !

Zen Cherry on top of that match is that it took 61 mins! (Seriously.)

He seems a bit unsettled...not quite there. Trying to get back now. On the other hand, Ollie's his friend & he wouldn't want to beat him 6-1 etc, so maybe he went to the movies after the first set, satisfied that he had his game when he needed it.

It's good that he's working hard. One thing it shows is there is much more depth in mens tennis than womens. The womens matches are no fun to watch until you get to the quarters. Even today Venus and Serena, it was an awful error filled match.

I know that was a disgusting match

How is it determined who serves 1st in set following tiebreak? Based on service *games* not last *serve*

Whoever served to bring it 6-all will not serve to kick off the next set

You can keep your eyes shut and know the score
Whenever there are loud screams and COMEONs and Yays, ollie has won a point
When there is a few isolate claps, Roger has won a point....
Really going for the underdog here

That's what Roger needs....easy service games. But I wish was doing more on Ollie's second serve. I think in the last game Ollie fed him three second serves in a row and Roger didn't win a point.

Wms. matches are always awful to watch - as would any between siblings. Throw in that Wms2 is barely playing this yr...

There's not much in Top 10-20 of men's tennis now 'cept Roger & Thugs on clay. But the next semi generation has hatched & they're on the way up quickly - the 19 yr. old batch is big, good & coming quickly. Funny how they seem to roughly come in 5 yr. batches.

I havent' seen Djoko, but saw Berdych yesterday finally. Frankly, was hoping he'd play Roger in the final. When he outgrows being 19, he'll be a delight to watch.

Wonder what movie Roger was watching during the 2nd set? Glad it's over...esp. since we didn't get to see that beautiful 1st. set. It's been a bit difficult here!!

Speaking of crowd, I'm glad they're rooting for a 5'5" player against the BEST. He needs it more. However, if James Blake isn't worn out by having played all week in New Haven, and makes it to the finals v. Roger - that would be hideous. The noise in that mosh pit of 25,000 people rooting insanely against Roger would be painful to watch!!

Yeah, but Roger has become a master of blocking the crowd, semi and final in Miami was so bad, after the semi match he said he felt like he was playing against Agassi and the crowd.

Of course the crowd will always cheer for his opponent, the underdog. Rogi wanted the night matches, and this is what he gets -- hardly any crowd support [just like Rafa -- both of them experience the same reaction].

Why is Rogi out of sorts tonight? If he wins, he better step it up vs. Kiwi the sour.

Finally Rogi won 63 76(86) 62!!

So, anyone offer their overall impressions?? Will he beat Kiwi? Remember Kiwi takes sets off Rogi and BOTHERS him on grass but this is h/c so it will be even worse for Rogi I think.

So time to improve sth -- his serve, his return, his bpt conversion esp -- all before his R16. At least Rogi made the second week. Now it really gets tough [and these 3 matches were not vs. tough players yet he had a tough time in R2/3]. Hmm... Blake's looking much better.

RogiFan, don't worry - he's playing beautifully - check the stats. He just went to the movies in the 2nd set. Hewitt's busy getting emotionally re-wired this year. Yeah he was shaky in the second set, but he picked up his level in the third and won comfortably. Please let's not have any nervous nellies all concerned if he doesn't play a beautiful match every time. I'm sure most guys in the locker room would like the stats of not dropping a set yet and being out on court the least amount of time.

And believe me I have no problem admitting when he's playing poorly - I certainly did so during the Cincy tourney. Ted Robinson kept mentioning the Wimbledon final. I wanted to say to him, that there's no way Roger will play every match like that. If he did, the rest of the tour would just quit. But like Sampras Roger is able to do what he has to to win and up his level when he needs to. He did it in the TB and third set tonight.

Roger looked a little bit lethargic and lazy in the second set and played without a purpose. Then he realised that Rochus is not going to lose the match himself and started constructing points better. Overall, it was an OK match with very little energy spent. These little guys are not easy to beat, and Roger often have some trouble with good retrievers with an average serve. I think he should beat Kiefer. The bad thing is that Nalbandian will beat Sanguinetti 6-0 6-0 6-0 and be awfully fresh in QF. The Italian guy could barely stand at the end of the 5 sets marathon.

I think he'll beat Kiefer too although maybe not in straight sets. But it all depends on how Kiefer's playing. I saw him play Agassi in Montreal and he just lost it and faded away. The thing that annoyed me is how slow he was in between points. He's a very frustrating guy to watch.

For any other player, winning in straight sets would be a huge blessing. But it seems that we always expect Roger to bagel his opponent, or play like he did in the Wimbledon final.

I am not worried about his current form. He will pick it up several notches as the week goes on. But that said, he still needs a very solid game to beat Kiefer.

I can't remember about this woman after the match point, but I guess so. They showed his mother twice or so during the coverage. When they focus on a single woman, she must be Mirka or his mother (or some famous people like Nicole Kidman in the Santoro match). She has dark short hair (not that short, though...)

So I'm done nitpicking every part of his game because I know he raises it up a notch when he needs to. They showed his mother on TV last night after he won and she looked so happy - big smile on her face. :)

R. FEDERER/O. Rochus

6‑3, 7‑6, 6‑2

An interview with:

ROGER FEDERER

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Roger.

Q. You're traveling more or less most all weeks without a coach. Also you don't work with one of the major management groups. That independence, self‑reliance, do you think that helps you in terms of your career or even your play?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I think ‑ how should I say ‑ the effect, I felt it like maybe one and a half years ago or a year ago when I started to play last year without a coach. I mean, that was never my plan, not to have a coach, never to have the big management group, you know. But definitely made me more independent. Maybe that's one of the reasons why I played so well, because I was always in control of what was going on on the court, off the court. I was in control really. I think that was very important for me to actually learn about life, you know, how it is on the tour without somebody always telling you what to do, and same, you know, off the court with the management. I think it's an interesting time. Now, obviously with the coach, now it's different again. I have expertise on this side.

Q. People talk about the beauty of your game, the grace the effortless quality. Where do you think that comes from? Your movement? Anticipation? Why do you think people see that?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, technique‑wise, I think I've always gotten many compliments because everything looks very easy, smooth. On top of that, I think I've really improved my physical shape, so my movement is even better, quicker, smoother. All those things make it now look, you know, basically perfect for some. So I think that's why I get all the compliments. You don't see many guys playing one‑handed backhand. That definitely helps, too. I think the one‑handed backhand always looks nicer in a way than the double‑handed. Obviously, I get commitments because I'm 1 in the world. If Olivier would be 1 in the world, everybody would be saying how nice he plays. That's just how it is.

Q. Being No. 1, does that give you a certain advantage going out there, certain extra aura that helps in match play?
ROGER FEDERER: Maybe occasionally. Not to an extreme. I don't like to think, "I'm No. 1. He's not going to try." I have also the feeling it also can really work against you. They want to come out, they want to win, it's a huge opportunity for them. They maybe even player better than they usually do. So I think against different players you feel differently.

Q. When you're playing a final set like that, having gotten over one or two problems in the second set, how much is it striking a balance between getting the match won as quick as possible and putting on a show for the crowd in an environment like that?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, obviously it's tough for the opponent. Two sets to love at 10:15 in the evening, to believe he could turn it around against me. Obviously, he's got crowd support there, that is clear. But for me, obviously I can start to play more freely, hit the ball easier, maybe knowing that he's not going to try to work as hard as he was the first two sets. So everything ‑‑ makes it easier for me in a way. Trying to put on a show, not really. All I want to do is win the match. I don't want to put on a show and lose. I have to stay focused. If good points come along, that's great, you know. But I'm not going to look for them too much.

Q. Surely come match point, it must be particularly an enjoyment to hit a match point like you did today?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, it was great. Also the point before, the backhand smash, that was great. Don't get an opportunity that often. I hit it well. Same with the match point. I said, "Might as well just hit it as hard as you can," and it worked. So that was great.

Q. Pete Sampras, a guy you're often compared to, he really had a healthy respect for the history of the game, the record books, where he was going to end up. How important is that to you to sort of think ahead, where you want to be down the line? How important are the history books as far as records?
ROGER FEDERER: For me it's more important just to know them. For me, it's not really what I'm looking for because I'm still a current player. Where I'm standing right now, if I'm best 5 ever in history or 15 or 35, [checkaudio], doesn't really matter for me. I think it's important for each player to know a little bit about what other players have achieved because they deserve the respect, they started the game, they were here before us. For me, it's more that what counts for me, knowing about the game, knowing about who played well, not really where I'm heading to. People can talk about it when I'm gone, you know, maybe how good or how great I was.

Q. Olivier Rochus told us when you were younger than 14, losing a lot of matches, he won many tournaments. Later on of course that changed, but can that still affect you in a match like this tonight, maybe the second set?ROGER FEDERER: That he was better?

Q. Yes.
ROGER FEDERER: Not really. It's over 10 years ago (smiling).

Q. For him maybe?
ROGER FEDERER: I don't think you draw out of that. It's just too long ago. Maybe if he would have beaten me four or five years ago a couple of times, then it would be different. On the tour, when we were both I think fully grown up basically. But then we were still, you know, kids basically. He was very good. I remember how he was already playing basically at this level. I had the feeling at 14, he was incredible. I grew and got stronger, and this is how I got to beat him.

Q. And he didn't grow?
ROGER FEDERER: He didn't grow that much, but he's still doing an incredible job at his height to play with the best and sometimes beat them. I think it's great, you know, to see him on tour as well. I mean, we both had a smile when they introduced me, said, "No. 1 in the world, best in the world, defending champion." It just doesn't stop. He looked at me and he started to smile in the warm‑up. It's pretty funny

P.S. sorry, I had to delete the interview from the Kiefer's thread. :o
