648 dead in Baghdad stampede

322 injured as railing collapses amid fear of suicide bomber

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- At least 648 people have been killed and 322 others injured in a stampede on a bridge near a Shiite mosque in northern Baghdad, police sources said.

Most of those killed were women and children, sources said.

According to witnesses, the stampede started after someone screamed that a suicide bomber was in the crowd of pilgrims gathered for a religious commemoration Wednesday.

A railing on the bridge then collapsed under the crush of people, and hundreds fell to their deaths in the Tigris River about 30 meters (yards) below, CNN's Jennifer Eccleston reported.

According to police, some people were crushed to death but most drowned.

Police expect the death toll to rise as they continue to pull bodies from the river. The dead and wounded inundated five hospitals in the Kadhimiya area.

The stampede took place at about 11:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m. EDT) near the Kadhimiya mosque, where pilgrims were gathered to commemorate the death of Imam Moussa al-Khadhem, a prominent figure in Shiite history who is buried at the Kadhimiya mosque.

Hours earlier, a mortar attack in the area killed seven people and wounded 36 others, police said.

According to authorities, three mortars landed around 8:15 a.m. (12:15 a.m. EDT) in the Kadhimiya neighborhood.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari has declared three days of mourning, state television reported.

Television reports said about 1 million pilgrims from Baghdad and outlying provinces had gathered for the annual commemoration, The Associated Press reported.

oh please, the 600 dead had nothing to do with the war. It had more to do with friction between the Shiites and Sunnis that has existed since the creation of Iraq. The Brits should never have unified the kurds, shiites and Sunnis. Lets face it these people cannot live together like so many others. If only there was a Time Machine, we would go back in time, make all 3 regions independant & ensure that Mecca, Medina would be the Muslim Vatican city and so form independant but weak enclaves and remain part of Hedjaz which was governed by the forefathers of King Abdullah of Jordan. Palestine won't be changed since I have no regrets with the existence of Israel. Rather we would go back and have Gaza given out along with Sinai. Like that Gazans would not be encouraged to reproduce like rabbits as they are now which only makes the community poorer. West Bank would be given away too. Wahhabbism in what is now Saudi Arabia would be defeated when Brits would support the Ibn Rashids who appear to be relatively moderate against Ibn Saud and his 100 and so children who for the whole would not exist if al Saud was not in power since he would not have the money to sustain his expensive & lustful lifestyle.

Ibn Rashid ma even have been like Sheik Zayed of UAE who is very much a moderate and whose country tolerates foreigners. So Saudi Arabia would simply be called Arabia, Hejaz (Mecca & Medina) and another region which used to be independant.

you wish. If an Iraqi tripped and fell to his death would you blame that on Bush again? It was the shiites fault period. Anyway the wahhabbists must be gloating cause they don't appreciate sunnis worshipping saints which is harem in the Muslim religion.
