Roger's record against Santoro is 6-2. The last 5 wins belong to Roger. The last two meetings came in Grand Slam tournaments. Last Years US Open 3rd round 6-0 6-4 7-6, and this year's Australian Open 1st round 6-1 6-1 6-2 (similar score to vs Minar from today..) Good that he played Santoro on hard coart the last two times. (Actually all 8 matches took place on hard court.)

Santoro had a surprsingly easy victory over Melzer. Though, Santoro has the kind of game that could frustrate a mental nitwit like Melzer completely. It must have been a very entertaining match to see!
After Rogi's trashing of Minar, I think Santoro can't be much of a problem either. 6-3 6-2 6-3!

That's good to know. I hope Roger will have a similar result as their last meeting. Still Santoro is scary in that he can really make an opponent run around a lot.

Good Luck Roger!!!

I have no fear whatsoever of this match. I am certain that Roger will win it in straights, and I am going to sit back and thoroughly enjoying all that slicing and dicing and lobbing and dropshotting. They respect each other a lot, and they often smile when they get taken aback by the other's shot....good fun :yeah:

Unfortunately for Fabrice, he has to play a doubles match AND a mix doubles match tomorrow. If he had to play Roger after those 2 matches then that would be just... :tape:

Having 2 matches the previous day and then play a best of 5 match against the world's no. 1 doesn't sound all that great either. Hopefully Fabrice will recover by Friday and play well.

Yeah, it was his choice. In other cases they don't change the singles schedule in consideration of the players doubles and mixed doubles. Usually the player drops out of one of those if it's going to hurt his/her singles.

I hope Roger won't get too cooled off waiting for the next match.

Rogi copes w the dumb sched better than his fans!! he sees the upside to everything and that's why he's a champion -- v flexible ;)The scheduling is dumb. Wasn't Hewitt one of the last to finish R1? They need to quit spreading the mens first round over three days. That's just dumb. And quit putting unseeded, low ranked players on AA at night before defending champs get to play there. I don't care what nationality...the best should be showcased on the best court at the best times.

I agree. The scheduling is weird. The 2nd round match on Friday without any major rain delay... He had 2 1/2 days off, and I think he will have 2 matches in 2 days (maybe 3rd round match tomorrow...), assuming that SF takes place on Friday and Final on Sunday. This is OF but one odd thing for me is that my local NBC channel NEVER shows the men's French Open final. Isn't that the oddest thing? Every year they show a 15 hour telethon all day and don't show the final of the French Open.

This is fun to watch. I'm glad the crowd is getting a good match. They said Roger already has over 20 winners!

yeh they showed the first set stats, Rogi had like 23w and 14 UE, while Santoro 8w/5ues sth like that.

Roger seems to be serving better. Quick holds on his serve. I like that. But maybe stay away from the net for a while.

He's not serving well, I bet his first serves % is rather low tonight.

WOOOOHOOOOO What a point! :haha: these two really...Rogi just so damn fast on court, what a way to save the bp! Crowds love it and I won't blame them if they cheer for Santoro a bit more, who won't want to see more of this  Santoro just kept forcing Rogi to come out with better shots.

I watched him last year at SF's, and I hate to say this -- but its almost like its better on TV unless you have the good seats
One of the things which struck me most was that when its live, you can't see as well how Roger twists his body when he hits the FH.

On top of that, both SFs were 3-set affairs, it was really bad value for the money :(

This is what Sports Illustrated said about the match:
Men's No. 1 Roger Federer watched Fabrice Santoro entertain the late night crowd and win points on a few trick shots -- one between his legs, running with his back to the net; another a behind-the-back volley; still another with a flick of the wrist while turned around. Federer was less showy and less inspired, doing just enough to beat him 7-5, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
OK I agree that maybe Santoro had the "flashier" shots and he certainly won over the crowd. But to say Roger was less inspired when he had 73 winners in 36 games? I mean come on, Roger had his fair share of great shots too. Maybe not as flashy, but just as awe-inspiring. Especially during the third set tb. Roger would never have won if he was just playing "average" tennis.

Entertaining match, I could live without 2 breaks of serve in the 1st set though.Yeah he had a bit of a brainfart in that first set. I still chalk it up to nerves and Santoro keeping him off balance and out of rhythm. At least they provided the crowd some entertainment. The good thing is unlike Andy, Roger knows how to pull out a win in tricky matches.

Yeah, I'm still very high now :bounce::bounce::bounce:Oh no, that'll never happen. The match was just awesome, I still can't get over it. But the sad thing is if Roger doesn't beatdown his opponent then the press says he's "uninspired" or had a "stern test". But yet when he does breeze through a match then people complain that it's too boring. He can't win. I know Santoro's "flashier" shots won over the crowd and got more attention, but Roger had some pretty amazing shots too that showed once again why he's the best player in mens tennis.

my alarm went off but i slept like a log but saw the 3rd set. will have to watch some replay later.
anyways, not surprised that the French magician gave Roger a hard time, this is the same guy that frustrates Safin with his game. lol.
but good to see the crowd enjoyed it (saw Fabrice hit a volley w the racket behind his body and won that point). Roger missed a few bh's when FS came to the net, but also saw some great shots esp. the fh.

What time did this match end, at 5:30 AM or so? I was awake for the whole night and went to bed when the match was finished. It was at around 6 AM and the sky was getting brighter... Am I a crazy fan? :o

Santoro made not only the behind back volley but also a between legs shot and won that point, the shot which Roger couldn't convert in Australian Open against Safin on match point. It was really an entertaining good match. Roger says that's because of Santoro that the people saw a wonderful match, not of him.

Glad he won in 3 sets! :D But when was the last time that he got broken twice in a row when he was serving for set in a single set???

my alarm went off but i slept like a log but saw the 3rd set. will have to watch some replay later.
anyways, not surprised that the French magician gave Roger a hard time, this is the same guy that frustrates Safin with his game. lol.
but good to see the crowd enjoyed it (saw Fabrice hit a volley w the racket behind his body and won that point). Roger missed a few bh's when FS came to the net, but also saw some great shots esp. the fh.

The funny thing is that the match was a little over two hours long and I don't thing it tire Federer cuz Santoro was doing a lot of the running. :)

I'm glad this match was primetime cuz my parents had some guest and I forced all of them to watch this match. One of the guest even call me after she got home and completed the match and said it was a great match. They were all cheering for Santoro though(because apparently I talk of Federer too much.)

I love the media response to this match. There isn't a lot because it ended so late. But all they focus on is how Roger had 32 UE's and the match took longer than 61 minutes. Good grief. If they think every one of his matches should only last an hour....that's just :silly: Yeah Santoro gave him a tough match. But Roger certainly wasn't playing badly and it was so much fun to watch. I'm sure the crowd would rather have a match like this than a total beatdown from Roger. They want some entertainment, not a snooze fest. And yeah Santoro "wowed" the crowd with some of his shots, but Roger's the one moving on to the next round.

You should've taken a nap before the match ;) And yes, to stay up for the whole night is crazy, but nothing big deal, coz sometimes I did so too, and what made matter even worse is that sometimes I would get too high and excited to go to bed after the match, which actually ended up with my virtually having no sleep at all ... :o :p

My guess is Roger will stay back more next round. But 73 winners with only 9 being service winners and in only 3 sets! When's the last time someone's put up numbers like that?
so true. i totaly missed the match last night because i went out and didnt get home till like 5 in the morning and i tried to check the result on my pc but i was so wasted that that i couldnt turn on my pc!lol!
but yeah ive just checked the result and stats and i saw 30 something errors but 70 something winners was pretty damn impressed. santoro must have played great, he had good stats too.
anyway well done roger and good luck for the next round.
