This news is from www.theguyfromrussia.com :

22/7/03 Marat leaves for LA on the 23rd July to start the US season with Denis.

"He needs to build up his confidence once again in order for him to start winning again," Golovanov said.

"We'll just have to wait and see how it goes but if he is lucky enough to put together a good winning streak in America then he may prepare himself for a good run at the U.S. Open.

"The season is definitely not over yet and Marat feels that there is still time for him to do well this year," he added.

The countdown begins... :) :) :) We all waited so long for this, Marat will be finally back, HEALTHY  :)

Go Go Go Marat! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Safin Sets Sights On Los Angeles Return Next Week

By Richard Pagliaro
07/23/2003

Marat Safin has played many parts in his six-year career. The 23-year-old Russian has been a Grand Slam champion, a world No. 1, the leader of a Davis Cup champion, a temperamental terror, a racquet demolition expert, an underachiever and an injury-prone player. Next week, Safin will arrive in Los Angeles ready to take on a new role — a comeback competitor.

Absent from the ATP Tour for more than two months due to an assortment of injuries, Safin has set his sights on his return to tournament tennis at the $380,000 Mercedes-Benz Cup at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA.

"It has been a difficult year for Marat so far," Safin's coach Denis Golovanov told Reuters writer Gennady Fyodorov today. "But we think he has recovered well enough to start playing again. He has been practicing for the past week in Moscow and tomorrow we'll fly out to Los Angeles."

The 2000 U.S. Open champion will be making his first ATP appearance since since falling to Franco Squillari in the opening round of the Valencia tournament on April 28th. Prior to that loss, Safin looked sharp in scoring a 6-4, 6-3 semifinal victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero on the red clay of Barcelona only to retire from the final citing fatigue while trailing Carlos Moya two sets to one.

Safin, who has posted a 12-6 record this season, withdrew from Roland Garros and Wimbledon with wrist and hand injuries.

Widely regarded as one of the most talented players in tennis, the six-foot-four Safin started the 2002 season strong by advancing the the Australian Open final and followed that performance with a semifinal appearance at Roland Garros. Since then, Safin has slumped in Slams. He exited in the second round of both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year and withdrew from his third-round match with Rainer Schuettler at the Australian Open in January due to the wrist injury.

Since then, one of Safin's best showings in a big event came at the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells where he reached the fourth round and was weakened by a flu-like virus in suffering the worst defeat of his career, a 6-0, 6-1 setback to Robby Ginepri. He followed that performance with a shocking 7-6(9), 7-5 second-round setback to 30-year-old Italian Davide Sanguinetti at the Nasdaq-100 Open in Key Biscayne.

The enigmatic Safin's schizophrenic game sometimes suffers from such wild mood swings it would seem to require counseling rather than coaching. His coach is hoping Safin can string a series of wins together to regain the confidence he showed during a 2000 season that saw him capture an ATP-best seven tournament titles, including a dazzling display of championship tennis in crushing Pete Sampras to capture the U.S. Open crown as he became the youngest man to finish No. 2 since a 19-year-old Boris Becker in 1986.

Since that sustained season of brilliance, Safin has won exactly three titles in 30 months.

"He needs to build up his confidence once again in order for him to start winning again," Golovanov told Reuters." We'll just have to wait and see how it goes, but if he is lucky enough to put together a good winning streak in America then he may prepare himself for a good run at the U.S. Open. The season is definitely not over yet and Marat feels that there is still time for him to do well this year."

Hi Lena. Welcome.

in your sig you say Marat has the most bad character. What do you mean? I think Marat has a great character. Bad character to me is Lleyton Hewitt.

Jessi

Thanks !!
I think he has a bad character but not in the bad meaning , because he show his emotions and sometimes he is angry or happy too .
He do the show during a match and it's for that i like him .
But i'm sure that in the life , he has a great character .

Lena
07-25-2003, 09:58 AM
Sorry if my english is very bad !!
For me a very bad character that i dislike , is Hewitt .
And Rios too .

Jessi
07-25-2003, 10:31 AM
Gotcha! thanks for the explanation! To me 'bad character' has a negative conotation which is why i asked you. But now that you've explained it i understand what you mean. Marat is bad in a James Dean sort of way..cool, sexy and dangerous! ;) Hewitt on the other hand is an a**hole. He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever about him. At least with Marat he is funny and charming. Hewitt is just a jerk!

Your Eglish is excellent! :)

Jessi

lol, i agree. Hewitt is extremely unbearable. So glad to see him tumbling down the rankings. :D

Lena
07-25-2003, 11:24 AM
I agree for hewitt also .
When he lost in the first round in Wimbledon , i was ... very very very happy .
And when Marat won the second set 6/0 in finale of Paris-Bercy last years . Marat played a game exceptional against Hewitt .
Moreover he played very well in the Davis Cup , and Russia won thanks to him . I'm french but i was with Marat and Russia .

Another thing, it takes a l-o-n-g time to come back from wrist surgery, it seems. I'm thinking of Chanda Rubin and Andre, when he first hurt his wrist early in his career.

Maybe for that reason he wanted to take a more conservative approach:confused:

Could be, at least maybe that was the case the 1st time, but if you remember back to the AO when he 1st hurt it he said if ithe wrist got hurt again he would have to have surgery...well he hurt it before TMS Rome and he just hurt it again.....I don't know...I really don't.

I'm just worried this is going to turn into an injury that ruins his career. That they are going to start talking about Marat like they talk about Philippoussis - a great player who could have done so much more is he hadn't gotten injured. (although Mark might just prove everyone wrong)

Having an injury and keeps coming back time and time again isn't good. It is better to take the extra time off now and makes sure that the wrist is 100% healthy than it is to keep this up.

Roundup: Philippoussis Feels Better, Safin Worse

Compiled From Wire Reports

LOS ANGELES -- Wimbledon runner-up Mark Philippoussis opened his U.S. hard-court season with a straight-set victory over Adam Kennedy in the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Cup on Tuesday.

Philippoussis, the fifth seed in the $380,000 ATP Tour event, won 6-3, 6-2 in his first singles match since losing the Wimbledon final to Roger Federer on July 6.

Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt faced Cecil Mamiit in a first-round match Tuesday night.

Philippoussis, 26-12 in singles matches this year, said playing doubles with Hewitt on Monday in this tournament was "key" in adjusting to conditions at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

But, Philippoussis said, the real key to his resurgence after three knee operations in 14 months was having fun.

"I'm not looking at the rankings at all," said Philippoussis, who is ranked 20th in the world. "All I'm looking at is staying healthy. I'm enjoying the challenge (of playing) a lot. I'm just enjoying myself. It's been more than a year since I've been healthy, knock on wood."

Meanwhile, former U.S. Open champion Marat Safin might have played his final match of the season. Safin, seeded sixth, retired from his first-round match against Prakash Amritraj due to an injured left wrist, then hinted that he might not play again this year.

"I got injured and I felt a lot of pain. I could not hit a backhand and I decided to stop," said Safin, who said he didn't know when asked about a return to the tour.

"It's all open," he said. "It depends on the doctor. I have to find a solution. Anyway, it's the end of the season so I need to find out and be prepared for next season."

The 19-year-old Amritraj, ranked 351st in the world, wasn't the only surprise winner. Thirty-year-old veteran Michael Joyce, playing his first tour match of the year, upset Jan-Michael Gambill, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) in a match that had been suspended Monday night due to rain

In other first-round results Tuesday, third-seeded Sjeng Schalken beat Safin's coach, Denis Golovanov, 6-4, 6-4; No. 7 Wayne Ferreira eliminated Robert Yim 6-4, 6-4; No. 8 Vincent Spadea topped Justin Gimelstob 6-4, 6-3; Nicolas Kiefer defeated Nicolas Thomann 6-1, 6-4; and Robby Ginepri beat Andrew Ilie 6-1, 6-1.

Here is an official statement from Marat's camp re his withdrawl (from theguyfromrussia.com):

The unfortunate withdrawal is down to Marat attempting a tournament too early in his recovery. He will be seeing doctors in the States who will decide on the best treatment and we hope he will be able to return soon.

"From what I've been told, it's too early to tell whether Marat's season is over and everyone has their fingers tightly crossed for him. Let's hope the doctors have some good news!"
