US Open 1st round! Roger Federer vs. Ivo Minar

A good draw for our friend Roger! Though their first encounter at the Dubai open was quite a thriller (6-7 6-3 7-6), Roger comfortably disposed of his young opponent at the second round of Wimbledon this year (6-4 6-4 6-1).

What do you all predict for this match? Me thinks Roger in 3, and being a little rusty, one set will go into a tiebreak! 6-3 7-6 6-1 for Roger!

That's what I thought myself. This is one of the reasons that I think Roger's early rounds are tougher than Nadal's. People like to say that it really doesn't matter what the early rounds have, but I think it does. Roger is more vunerable when he's trying to get used to the conditions and settle down to a rythm.

no doubt nadal was an absolute piss of a draw. but im not too concerned, think about who has roger actualy lost to this year? top notch players where 2 of the 3 he had matchpoints and they played great matchs and also needed some luck.
roger has cut out the stupid losses this year and i dont expect them to start now. its better that he gets tested early(hopefully not too much) than the latter rounds. he will also be on guard if he gets tested early for the latter rounds. we shouldnt have to worry too mcuh about the first rounds, but come the 16s against ferrero, thats the time to get the pacemaker fitted. i am more worried about ferrero than safin/hewit/roddick

The good news is that he would only face Ferrero OR Kiefer not both of them. In Dubai Roger was down match point to Ferrero but pulled that out. Ferrero took him to a tie break in their 3rd set at Wimbledon.

A few too many people say that this was a bad 1st round draw. Seriously, why? Is it because of the Dubai match? Roger struggles more often in ATP tournament 1st round matches, see his Queens match against Söderling, for example. However, Roger is always ready in a Grand Slam and I really don't know how Minar could trouble Federer to any extent!

guinevere_79

This is not a bad first round draw, considering that Roger could have drawn any of the following players: Ginepri, Blake, Philippoussis, Grosjean, Chela, Massu, Karlovic... all dangerous floaters. I don't think Ivo Minar is even mentioned as one of the dangerous unseeded players in the draw.

That said, people shouldn't underestimate the guy. There's a reason he took Roger to three sets in Dubai. He's not a pushover.

This draw is so similar to his Wimbledon draw, it's almost funny. Aside from Minar, he could also face JCF again (in the 4th round again!) and Gonzalez again (in the QF also!). Then waiting for him in the semifinal is Lleyton (or Safin), just like in Wimbledon.

True but it's not a good first round draw either. A good first round would be a wild card or qualifier. As I've said a million times no doubt....Nadal has the luck to get two wild cards in a row!

I'm never so keen on the assumption that playing a qualifier is a good draw. A qualifier is a player who is capable of playing on the surface and comes into the tournament accustomed to the surroundings and on a 3 game winning streak.
Qualifiers are especially tricky on surfaces that require a certain specialism, such as Wimbledon and Roland Garros. In the French Open I'd play a non-seeded non-claycourter over a qualifier any day.
Playing a wild card usually is a good draw, though, with the exception of wild cards handed out to players ranked too low, due to recent injuries.

yeah i know i watched both those matchs. roger played quite shite in dubai, but held his nerve, came up with big shots. in wimbledon roger played pretty damn good against ferrero, if he played anything less he would have lost.
i would prefer him to play kiefer.

I have never seen Minar play, but Roger has ;) So he will know what to expect and the tight score of their last meeting will make him not to underestimate Minar. So in summary, I am feeling confident & good about his 1st round.

Roger is having a good but quite easy workout. I personally think he'd prefer a slightly sterner test, to get used to match conditioning. But he'll probably get that down the road anyway
He is doing target practice, serve wide, serve down T, crosscourt forehands, backhand returns, chipping, everything

You're not serious right? Rogi is playing some great tennis out here today, good fh and volleys and of course serving well.
Oh I think he's playing great. And I have no doubt he'll finish in 3

I'm saying I wish the other guy gave some more resistance in second set, so that Roger could show a little more of his shots. Too many points in second set were ended in 1 and 2 shots

For those of you not in the US or not watching, they have a new thing this year- - at the end of the match, the winner signs 3 balls and hits them into the crowd

Roger just did that (I saw an old man get one and hold on to it and fight off an old woman)

Everything was great today: the colors, Roger's play, the match time, simply phenomenal. I just have to say too good. I am particularly happy about his use of the slices because his slices seem to be staying lower than they did before which is good because it will make it harder to tail off on as it has much more bite in it. It will also give him time to get back in good position. This guy is just blessed by God. Nothing more.

I agree, it was worthy of a final. The only downside is that a GS is a tricky 2 weeks tournament. You don't want to pick too early, but at the same time you don't want to start badly and leave a vulnerable impression.

True. My only worry after seeing him today was if he can keep that up for whole 2 weeks but then I guess as you said, either way it's sth he has to pace himself for.

I can't really r'ber the last time I'd seen him play so well in the first round like today though.

Ya, I just can't help getting a little bit worried whether it will remain for the whole fortnight esp the last two consecutive days. But still a good performance to start with is by all means better than a bad one. So we just sit back and enjoy what he has to bring us. Maybe some even bigger amazement ahead... ;) :wavey:

I haven't seen the match yet, but based on the scoreline and stats Roger played well. But was it really impressive play by Roger, or did Minar just horribly suck or a little of both? I never get too excited about first round matches because usually it's the good and great playing against the bad and worse. But seeing how Rog was kinda rusty in Cincy, I'm glad he came out of the blocks playing well. Much better than a shaky start where the press would start to wonder if he was out-of-form. Glad to see his mother, Reto and Arthur Cohen were there as well.

Does anyone know how much of this match USA showed today? I taped it, but I have a feeling they probably cut away since it was a run away by Roger.

mitalidas
08-30-2005, 07:11 PM
they showed most of the match --with a small gap in the beginning of set 2, and a small gap in the beginning of set 3. you will get the shaughnessy-karatantcheva stuff in between, some monfils stuff too
Roger played exceedingly well, and ivo did not play well. it is amazing that this guy took Roger to a TB earlier in the year

Shy

courier repeated that he thinks Monfils is a good bet to get through to the SF, repeating what Wertheim said in his predictions.
Are we the only people --we MTF-- who think this is a stretch?

There's some aesthetic beauty in a 6-1 6-1 6-1 victory in 61 minutes.
1 match down, 6 to go!
Win this 1 slam, to make it 6 in total!

Must be a sign or something!
