Hey guys... I just joined here, but I've seen a few familiar user names from the old atp-chat! I'm Kristen, aka B-Girl (BJ Girl according to dunga). My point... I took quite a few vinci pics at the aus open this year, so I'll go get the link to my album (its all online. lots of players. Handy if you're also a Jarkko fan!)

I have photos from Adidas 2002 / 2003 as well as wheelchair tennis and some of the Aussie Davis Cup team, so just drop me a line if you'd like to see those too :) Just keep in mind that there are around 150 pics there so it will take a while to load up! But, it works :)

From the less informed perspective of a tennis fan, that's one good looking team (mind you my ideal is Jarkko and Simon Aspelin... omg yes!) But they'd be a good team I think. Vinci was watching Joachim play in Melbourne so I guess they'd know each others games quite well, though Joachim's been sticking more to the challenger tour than vinci...

From a Tennis X interview with Joachim Johansson! :wavey:

Tennis-X: What's your current status on the Swedish Davis Cup team? I
know they've been working you in the last couple ties, what do you
see for the next couple ties?

JJ: Hopefully the old guys are still going to be playing (laughing), (Thomas) Johnasson is coming back right now, (Robin) Soderling, we've got (Thomas) Enqvist and (Jonas) Bjorkman who is a little bit older, hopefully they can keep playing, especially Bjorkman for the doubles. If he stops playing then the doubles team is going to get weaker. Me
and Soderling are upcomers, I think it been working good for us because me and Robin played this year, and I was in the team last year, I played dead rubber against Australia as well. We've got (Andreas) Vinciguerra who is coming back soon, so we have three guys who are normally around the Top 50, even if the others guys quit we have a strong team.

Actually it's pretty funny that he and Norman always is on TV together and Norman almost do all the talking. We'll the Swedish clay team needs to get back BIG TIME!

They just said at Swedish TV during the DC match that Vinci is on the way back. He has practiced several months at Växjö Tennis Center and Janne Gunnarsson (former player and commentator for DC matches) said that Vinci played great the last time.
The goal is that he will come back to the claycourt season in the end of april and he will start playing challengers then.

I think this is really good news cos I don´t want one more Swede stopping his career because of injuries.

Kristen
03-06-2005, 02:00 PM

I think I'll keep my expectations incredibly low. It feels like too many summers have passed with all these plans vinci has, and nothing eventuates...for any number of reasons. Hope he can come back though. If that happens I may have to rearrange the top 4 (into a top 5!).

Vinciguerra makes come-back in Båstad.

Andreas Vinciguerra makes his come-back at a higher level in Båstad in July. The last time he played on the ATP-tour was in autumn 2003 when he entered the Stockholm Open.

-This feels good, Båstad has been a stop I've looked forward to since I became healthy and started training in full. I feel strong and if I can play at the same level in a match situation as I do in practise I'll be dangerous, says Andreas Vinciguerra.

Viniguerra has received a wild-card to the Swedish Open, the tournament where he was runner-up in 1999 and 2000.

Slutspelat för Vinciguerra i Båstad
Av Max Wiman
Senast uppdaterad 7 juli 2005 10:30

I tredje set såg ”Vinc” uträknad ut.

I haven't seen half of the guys in the draw, but of the ones I have seen... and I've seen Vinci (as that newspaper pic shows  )...I think he has quite a decent chance. There's no reason why he shouldn't be able to kick the asses of these guys :D And, Marach is at a different tournament, so I'm all for Vinci here ;)

Oscar will win it next year and I love the fact he's playing a clay challenger before playing the US Open. Well for Vinci he has been showing some good form and just hope he can continue it and being the tennis fan I am. I have been to this place years ago, when it used to be an ATP tournament and I'd love if he could win, but he has to get past the QF's.

I will try to remember to keep my marach cheering in the appropriate section :hehe:

Geez you are talking about the future and today I was kinda informed I'll have to prepare informations about players coming to PeKao Open Szczecin challenger next week. Vinci got a WC for quallies, I'm honest with you, I've never liked this guy too much or something (esp. after Bastad 2005 heh out of personal reasons  ) but now I think the interview with him would be a good idea because he almost retired and now he's coming back and who knows, maybe one day he'll be on top.

What I need is a brief info about all his health problems, maybe any links??? The earth is shaking beneath my feet, I need interesting subjects... I even started a thread in general messages but I looked through the topics, all are about Federer or Agassi so I don't suppose anyone would be interested in a challenger and I know you can help me plz...

yours, Nathii

He plays Mariusz today  I'm sure you'll do just fine, whatever you ask them. They'll no doubt be glad to have a real conversation with an educated tennis fan, unlike those questions you posted about in the GM thread (I don't think many people on GM would know what a challenger is :tape: They certainly wouldn't know of the players in them)

Birte: Nah, my money tree isn't fully grown yet, so I have to wait til then ;) Hopefully then, my tax return / earnings will be enough to get me to the UK and get a bit of work over there :) Wimbledon is a MUST-SEE!!! The heat and humidity Monday forced members of the Swedish Davis Cup tennis team to skip the evening practice, ahead of the world group playoff tie here Friday.
"Andreas (Vinciguerra) is suffering from dehydration and has consequently come down with cramps. The humidity here is much more than what we are used to," said Sweden's Davis Cup non-playing captain Mats Wilander.

"We will have to drink lots of fluids and my aim will be to keep the players in shape," said the former world No. 1. Wilander was, however, happy that the team was finally able to get some practice under its belt on grass courts - the surface on which the tie will be played - Monday morning.

Owing to rains that lashed Delhi, the team was only able to practise on hard courts so far, until they practised at the National Sports Club of India Monday morning.

The Indian team, on the other hand, had two sessions of practice.

Vinciguerra too rusty

Vinciguerra is out of the Båstad tennis. Vinci lost 6-3 6-2 against Czech Lukas Dlouhy

Båstad: It was noticeable early that Andreas Vinciguerra has been away from the top level for too long. The spring in his step which was his strongest thing isn't there any more and the Czech's dropshots gave dividends, Vinci got there too late.

Nevertheless, is it possible that to see serious match the Swede can make a decent comeback on the tour, but at the same time he must see that to defeat many of the young and hungery players in different Challenger events and the question is whether his body will hold up.

The Båstad public did everything to support the popular Scanian in the beginning and it started fairly decently also, but a service break was enough to win the set for the Czech. Vinciguerra had some decent chances, but made too many unforced errors in his groundstrokes.

At the same time Dlouhy is a stable top 100 player and didn't make that many errors. On the contrary he broke "Vinc"s serve twice in the second set and it was fairly clear early on that Vinciguerra will be dismissed, as he slipped out of centre court instantly

From the ToJo interview with the same paper.

If Thomas is on the way out, so Andreas Vinciguerra refuses. Even though he should have doubts after a mediocre performance against Lukas Dlouhy the Czech losing in straight sets and took the fast train out of Båstad.

"I want to forget this day as quickly as possible. It's obvious that I am very disappointed."

English Translation:

Vinciguerra first win in 6 years

Andreas Vinciguerra is a winner again. On Sunday the Scanian took his first title since 2000.

The victory in the Italian challenger in Manerbio on clay comes in the shadows of the US Open and it was certainly only a Challenger event, a wee bit under the ATP tour, but for Vinciguerra it was of the highest signifiance. The 7-6 6-1 over Chilean Adrian Garcia in the final, meant that he took home his first title in three finals. It was also his first since the 2000 season.

"It was cool, my tennis had gone ahead recently, I have got many matches in the body, but at the same time I feel I can get even better" said the injury affected Scanian to TT.

Vinciguerra who started the year ranked at 409th and thanks to success is to climb 30 places from 183 to 155 in next weeks rankings.

His successes in the recent weeks are also of the highest importance for Swedish tennis. He is now seen as a natural for one of the two singles spots in the Davis Cup match away against Brazil on clay, a match that Sweden must win to stay in the World Group.

"I have spoken with the assistant Davis Cup captain Joakim Nyström about this match and therefore I chose to play clay challengers in Italy, instead of trying to qualify for the US Open. I would like to play Davis Cup and this is a match which he can win." said Vinciguerra.

Saretta saves match point, to win thriller opening match

More than 26 hours after it was originally due to start, the play-off tie between Sweden and Brazil finally got underway. On a clay court completely redone after rain threatened to compromise the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas weekend, the Belo Horizonte supporters were able to watch an incredible battle. An encounter which saw Andreas Vinciguerra come one point away from victory, before Flavio Saretta, carried by an overwhelming crowd, reversed the situation and won 64 16 36 62 75 after four hours and four minutes of battle.

A rematch of 2003 battle gave Saretta inspiration

For Saretta, the memories of the decisive Davis Cup match lost to Vinciguerra early 2003 in Helsingborg, gave him that much more motivation to start the tie on a good note, against the very same opponent.

And it seemed to go his way as he captured the opening set 64 against a more nervous Vinciguerra who is making his comeback in Davis Cup after more than a three years absence. The crowd of the Expo Minas were thrilled, loudly encouraging its country, yet without crossing the boundaries of fair play.

Yet, as Vinciguerra started feeling more comfortable, the momentum changed. Finding some incredible angles with his forehand, the Swede began to dictate play. Vinciguerra captured the second set 61, then broke in the fifth game of the third to win it 63.

First five-set match for Vinciguerra in three years

However it was far from over. Instead of surfing on the winning wave, the Swede who hasn’t played a best of five sets match for three years, started accumulating unforced errors. Saretta jumped on the occasion, and won the set 62, imposing a decisive fifth set.

The tension was extreme. In the second game, Saretta hit an easy forehand into the net allowing Vinciguerra to break on his sixth opportunity. A little later, the Swede was leading 4-1. But Saretta was determined to fight until he dropped. Overwhelmed by the crowd cheering and singing, he was taking his chances on every occasion, breaking back in the seventh game. Yet, at 5-4 for the Swede, a backhand mistake from the Brazilian offered “Vinci” a match point. Vinciguerra couldn’t capitalize, hitting a backhand into the net. Saretta wasn’t to lose any more games. Pumped up like never before, he broke in the 11th game. Serving for the match at 6-5, he jumped on his chance on his first match point. As Vinciguerra”s forehand return landed wide, Saretta dropped on his back. He had just offered his country an amazing first point.

Saretta's first Davis Cup Match in Brazil produced an amazing feeling

“This is incredible. Definitely the most important victory of my life. It was the first time I was playing Davis Cup in Brazil in front of 8000 people, and coming back after almost losing the match gave me an amazing feeling” Saretta said. “I feel I played two different types of tennis today. I started out defensive and nervous, and had I continued this way I would have had no chance. But I played a much more aggressive tennis in the fourth and the fifth set, and that made the difference” he added.

“This was a hell of a match. I’m so proud of Flavio,” captain Fernando Meligeni said. “I gave it my best, but Flavio played better on the big points. He deserved it,” said a respectful Vinciguerra.

The second rubber was carried over until Sunday due to failing light.

English:

It's tennis that I love

In todays second match on centre court Andreas Vinciguerra defeated Frenchman Nicolas Devilder in 2 straight sets 6-4 6-1. Kirstof Vliegen is through to the second round after defeating Nicolas Massu 6-2 6-4.

Andreas Vinciguerra has had many injury problems for several years and therefore has not been able to play his best tennis for a long time. The successes that many expected from him after his final place in Båstad and winning in Copenhagen have failed to be realised but now at last it's looking brighter for the Scanian. In the later part of 2006 he has won more and more matches at the Challenger level, among others he won the Manerbios challenger.

"Vince" received a Wild Card into this years Stockholm Open and this evening he showed that he was well worth it. The Scanian took command straight away despite feeling a little nervous. "It's a special feeling to be back on the centre court and in the beginning I felt a litte nervous, but I relaxed after some time," said Vincivuerra after the match.

Vinciguerra kept command and at the end of the set and coach Magnus Larsson noted 6-4 in his charge's favour. In the 2nd set Vince totaly dominated and he easily took the set 6-1. The match offered pleasant tennis beween both lefthanders who for the whole time were trying to use the court with their forehands.

"I played fairly weell, it is always difficult with the first indoor match. Det is great to get the win," summarised the Scanian about his performance.

"It has been difficult with the injuries but in my heart I have known that I will play tennis, it's tennis I love," answered the fighter the question about his thoughts when the injury problems where at their worst.

Vinciguerra's goals for the year were to finish inside the top 100. The last time he found himself inside the top 100 was the 3rd of November 2003.

In the next round Vince plays the 3rd seeeded Czech Tomas Berdych which will be a tough match for the home player.

"It shall be interesting to meet Berdych, a very good standard to gauge where I am at the moment", commented Vinci about his 2nd round opponent.

I noticed Vinci's doubles match was cancelled. Does anyone know why?

I'd love to see Vinci back on the tour. He's had a long troubled road back, but this tournament has been encouraging.

No, he is playing with Johan Landsberg against Björkman/McEnroe at the moment. But they are about to loose...
