Looks like Roger was underestimating what balls Ginepri could get back. The pace of the match isn't going that fast so Roger should have time to set up to hit outright winners. He shouldn't just keep slicing it back short if if he's missing it into the net so much.

To get broken at Love really hurts. Sheesh ....just before that he served a bunch of aces. Also Ginepri is not serving so hard, Roger should be able to break him.

COME ON Roger! HOPP HOPP

Gin is really playing great...steady

30-all

Gin is playing steady but nothing great. It seems to me Roger has been playing as if he thought Gin would simply make tons of errors so Roger thought all he had to was wait for that. I don't see Gin's serve as anything so great, yet Roger isn't doing anything with that. He's slicing many back. I'd like to see him block them back and force Gin to get into some rallies. It's seems Roger could get him out wide and then go for a winner.

PamV
08-20-2005, 08:24 PM
I cant watch this anymore, its hurting my stomach too much, Roger is playing like crap :crying2:

It looks like he has no idea what to do against Ginepri. Ginepri doesn't hit hard serves but Roger keeps trying to slice them back. I don't know why he can't just try to crack a return back without hitting it OUT.

The thing is Roger has hit some good shots but Ginepri has quick reflexes to counter act and get the ball back. Maybe if this was Roddick that would NOT happen. I have to wonder if Roger thought Ginepri would be more clumsy. This is so hard to watch. They are still ON SERVE in the second set, but I get the impression Roger is the more nervous and he's the one struggling. Maybe it's in his head about losing to a guy ranked 58.

We have to hope that Roger can pull out some strength to hang on here and if it goes to a tie break to win that and get going in the 3rd set. I am trying to figure out just what Ginepri is doing to trouble Roger this much. Ginepri isn't exactly a power hitter. Isn't he like a slow version of Hewitt? Or is this just about Roger playing stupidly????? What's going on?

MissMoJo
08-20-2005, 08:25 PM
hopefully, ginepri will lose his momentum. C'mon Rogi

fedsfan1

He's making so many UE's, it'll take a miracle for him to prevail in tiebreak. Hopefully he regrouped in brief rain delay. The match was on his racquet the 1st set, as Gin- was tentative expecting to be broken. But Roger's play got worse over the set.

I've been wondering if he has new orthotics in his shoes so he doesn't have a good feel for the court. I've noticed thruout is matches, he hasn't been getting low much.

lunahielo

PamV
08-20-2005, 08:30 PM
the annoying thing roger aint making an effort to turn things around

It's really hard to tell what Roger is trying to do. He might be confused about what tactic to use. Too bad he doesn't have a coach. They should have studied Ginepri's game. Roger has played so many guys though.....how different could Ginepri be from anyone else?

One instance comes to mind when Roger was nearing a break chance.....he was at the net and popped up a volley right toward Ginepri. His volleys are not working today.

The good news is that Roger has been holding OK. The one break in the first set was absolutely stupid. However, I think it's bugging him that he can't make a dent on Ginepri's serve.

roger is not moving as well as usual. Recall this is the first time we've seen him on hard courts, since his feet got bad. That probably has a lot to do w/his lack of confidence, or at least uncertainty.

I've been wondering if he has new orthotics in his shoes so he doesn't have a good feel for the court. I've noticed thruout is matches, he hasn't been getting low much.

If that were the case he should take the orthotics out. I get the impression that Roger is used to returning big servers that he can just bunt back. When a guy hits off speed balls then Roger isn't as sure and with Ginepri he keeps on slicing the ball short trying to get it to just fall over the net. However more often the ball is not going over the net.

ITA. At least Roger is very familiar with how Hewitt and Roddick play. There shouldn't be any confusion about tactics. My question is if there was a shoe problem or some orthotic mishap like someone else questioned? Maybe it was the intense humid-heat that hurt his game?

What ever.....let's hope Roger is the total NINJA/ LION KING/ TENNIS GOD tomorrow.

Also, the chair's mike kept blowing over and making huge noises and points (a couple) had to be replayed...

I think part of it is figuring out what adjustments he has to make to take care of his feet, etc. He seemed confused. What really concerned me most, was less the ball flying everywhere, but the look on his face. Until 3-3 3rd set, he had this thick mask on; after that you looked & saw Roger right there, focused & intent. The kind of mask we wear when we're in denial & disassociating, surrounded by the fog of confusion...what to do, how to adjust. Then he played that Great Point toying w/Ginepri where he finally reconnected w/his self, Roger Federer the Really Great Tennis Player who can do anything. Once reconnected, I knew the match would end quickly & w/out angst on his part. 3 mins. later it was over.

I thought aside from the wind & exploring Ginepri's game, this match was a mental struggle for Roger to fight his way back to his self through all the doubt & confusion occasioned by his first serious medical layoff; whereas his earlier matches were more physical adjustments - scraping the rust off his game, adjusting to Cincy conditions, etc.

Congratulations Roger! :bigclap: But I really have to say, that I´m not impressed by his play out there. I don´t know what it is, but he looked soo uncomfortable out there today. His game was very inconsistent. First he hits a brilliant winner, but that was often followed by a misshit or an easy bh into the net. His return was way off and I am worried about the final tomorrow. He´ll face Andy and he´s serving very strong at the moment. I know that Rogi owns him and his serve, but he didn´t play that well that I am relaxed about tomorrow. This is Rogi´s big chance to win this tourney and Andy is the last player (well, besides Nadal) that I want to see him losing to.

So Roger, now that you´re in the final, win this tourney. :rocker: Just do the same like last year in Canada.

08-21-2005, 01:32 AM
Did anyone watch him last year in Toronto? I didn't see any of his play but from what I'm hearing over in GM he played like crap all the way through the semis, and then in the final against Roddick, played really well. I'm just curious if it's similar in this tournament or if he's playing better/worse than he did in Toronto?

I'm sure he wants to keep his finals record alive, so he should up his play tomorrow. But sometimes when things aren't working there's nothing really you can do. I don't think Roger's less then stellar play is due to not trying hard enough or not caring. One thing PMac said on ESPN is Roger does care about the smaller tournaments, unlike Pete Sampras who would show up and not care if he won or lost. I think Andy can beat Roger if Roger's return game is below par, if he's not reading Andy's serve well. I just hope Roger does well on his own service games, lots of free points on his own serve. But if he loses, not the end of the world....he's never made it this far before at this tournament and he's gonna have to lose in a finals sometime, better here than in New York. I'm just impressed he was able to make it to the finals playing as badly as he did. Only a true champion could do that.

TenHound
08-21-2005, 01:37 AM
AR beat Hewitt on 1st serve. Perhaps Hewitt still scraping off rust - relatively speaking. Hope Roger's seeing better tomorrow than he has been this wk. - of all the people to lose to, Pandy is low on my list of preferences!! Better Ollie than Pandy!! Of course, better now than NYC, however...If Roger's consistency & focus continue from 3-3 3rd set today, Pandy's toast.

nobama
08-21-2005, 01:54 AM
I won't care if Roger loses so long as Andy is playing really well. Of course that somewhat depends on Roger and his return game. If Roger's return is off Andy might look like he's playing better than he really is. What frustrated me in earlier matches is Roger's opponent was playing like crap and he still was struggling to win. That's what I don't like.

Mirkaland, Roger can't lose to Pandy if he's playing well - by definition! But if he's not seeing his serve well, or he's spraying...much less margin for error v. Top 10 guy playing cleanly.
