"And how to say this one? The Russian one, doesn't have a bad one also. What is his name, the young one, the tall one? This guy, you know (laughter)? The one not playing too bad. He beat once Sampras in the finals of US Open. Do you know him (laughter)? Safin, maybe Safin? I mean, I don't know, I consider myself I don't have a bad backhand. Not super, but I'm working on it."

"We've been watching different cartoons."

"I wasn't interested in tennis, but didn't know what to do with my feets, too."

"You want to sit in the five-star hotels? You have to get here and, believe me, it's a long way. Years and years of working hard and traveling the world, and shitty hotels with no TV and no bathroom. I did all this. Going to a cafe and eating off the $5 menu. You start with $100 a week, maybe. I was down to nothing sometimes. I had to make some good results to make money. Now you come to five-star hotels, and it's, "What do you want? Coke? Whiskey?

"I wasn't a genius I wasn't stupid. I was okay. I was a normal guy. Sometimes I cheated in exams. we all do."

ok, here are some of my fave Marat quotes :D

classic Marat:

Girl "Say something to me Marat!!" Marat " Something."

But normally when you talk to yourself [on court] you say; 'I love you, you're a good guy, but don't miss next time, okay.' "

"Then there's the matter of that coaching vacancy. "I can't understand it," Safin says with mock earnestness. "You get to spend 24 hours a day around me. That should be hard to resist, shouldn't it?"

Last week he was asked if he had designs on emulating Kournikova and emigrating soon to the U.S. "Oh, so you want me to kill myself?" responded Safin, who recently bought an apartment in Monte Carlo. "They don't even let me drink beer in this country."

Q. Were you signing autographs for pretty girls?

MARAT SAFIN: No, pretty boys I was signing.

Jessi

Q. What was your first response when you heard the comment that you're like Russians: win one year and celebrate the next?

MARAT SAFIN: It's a lot of smart people in the world. It's good. It's good to have so many smart people. It's very good. I am happy for them.

"Everything is possible in this life, as you can see."

"I'm trying and I'm trying, and I'm growing up. I'll be 23 soon."

"This is the best time . . . enjoy every moment of your life, every day and not regret afterwards," he said. "It's really important to enjoy what you are doing, enjoy the way you are living because time is running really fast, every year faster and faster and your best times are when you are young."

"The journalist asks me: "Do you drink?" Our conversation took place during the tournament, plus it was the tournament where I was playing for the first time. Was that serious to ask me that? So I answered, in a joke: - I do. - Do you smoke? - I don't. - Did you go some place here? - I did. - What did you drink? - Whisky... That was the funny conversation we had. And then I found out from the newspaper that I liquor up every day. What I just can't understand is how did I manage to have enough strength for seven matches, three of which, with Kuerten, Agassi and Pioline, were five sets matches..."

"I'm satisfied with my life. I'm satisfied with my age. Maybe my brain is a little bit less than 21 years old, but I think that makes me feel good. I'm happy with this."

"I can't live in the United States - I'd kill myself. "It's not my style of life, it's not the country for me. They don't even let me drink a beer in this country. I was born in Moscow. Then I went to Spain and my life is like a festival everyday."

"I think for me it's difficult because I'm also scared of flying, yes. I have this paranoia. No, it affects me. Not tennis, it affects myself. Every time I go in the plane, sometimes I'm too scared. is difficult. But I'm taking sleeping pills, so is okay."

"I don't understand this. So why we don't -- why we don't put any fines to the chair umpires when they make easiest mistakes? If I would lose, I would lose because of this guy. The machine doesn't work, but I think he has an ear, no?"

"I'm coming here to play tennis, not just to fight with the chair umpire."

"We were playing great tennis and the guy just, he wants to show off. I don't know what is his problem."

"I cannot talk to the person with sunglasses... he should talk to me with respect like I am talking to him."

"That is a question without any answer. He says yes but, you know, Yevgeny has like seven Fridays in a week."

"I think Goran, he was like this since the beginning. He didn't just become crazy when he was on ATP. He was already like this when he was young, the same like me, yes. Yes, I was like this already. I think it's a question of parents. Normally the father, if he's a big fighter, normally you become crazy. You smash racquets, you know, you get crazy on the court like your parents."

"Everybody. Everybody's great. We all get along. We go out to dinner or the bars, I get along with everyone. That's the thing with men's tennis. We compete. Then we leave the court and we are friends. We go to eat, we go to bars. Just because I play you in a match, I have to hate you? No."

"He's (Santoro) the only person in this world who can beat me - no, I mean who beat me five times in a row without any problems. This is the only one who can drive me crazy on the court like he did already for two years.

"Being told I am having to play Santoro is like being told I am going to die."

Shadow

"Today I break racquets, for tomorrow we die."

"Ya, i choked. But you know, shit happends"

"just...the problem is that you have to pay after you break the racket. (laughter) you have to pay a fine. no, no, they say thank you, you are doing well."

"Places like Bronx or Queens are worse. Moscow isn't even close. Of course some people get shot by accident, but nobody is getting killed in the street. There is not a war."

"I wasn't a genius I wasn't stupid. I was okay. I was a normal guy. Sometimes I cheated in exams. we all do."

"I'm not like American. I have my own picture on wall."

"Robert de Niro, because he is as good playing a taxi driver as playing a banker or a gangster"

"I don't want to be Agassi or Kournikova."

"I want to be happy, to enjoy, that's the most important thing. I don't want to say that I like being famous or that I look for it, but people recognize me or whatever, why would I not be nice to them? We have a good life here. If part of that means that I am recognized or people want my autograph, it's OK."

"When I look at a dollar note, I only see a picture of George Washington on a piece of paper. Money is only money. It makes the life easier, but I don't feel sexy or mighty because of that."

"I try to have a normal life, but during the tournament it's impossible. Everybody wants something, a photo, an autograph. Me, my job is to play tennis. I don't care about popularity. I don't want to be invited to all TV shows, I don't want to see my mug in the front page of all the Russian's newspapers. I just want to live my life, to do my job and when my day at the office is finished I want to be a normal guy. Here, it's impossible. And Yevgueni who bores me in order that I make at least a semi final, in order that there is a lot of public/audience. I know what he wants: a head to head between him and me..."

"After I had won the US Open, my recognizing value climb up. Unfortunately the funny things don't happened to me now - such as last new-year's-eve in Moscow. I wanted to go to a famous club and they didn't let me in. I liked it. When today somebody don't recognize me and ask me what I do professionally, I always answer that I'm a poor student. That's more interesting and funnier."

"I am not a singer or a rock star. Tennis is tennis. If you want to see a clown, go to a circus."

Shadow

"All the girls, they want to be famous, right?"

"They (the sleazy blondes) are not my types. My type? Not this type."

(on being a ladies' man)"Of course! I'm not gay! Find me one normal guy who doesn't like women's company. I think it's good. It's natural. You cannot fight against the nature, right?"

"You count me as a manufacturer? I think that there are many people in Russia who would like to spend their sperm for money. If I need a child, my love will give birth to it."

"I just want to be on my line.. playing Marat Safin style."

"It's like love. When you look too hard, you don't find it. When you let it happen naturally, it comes."

"I watch TV, go to restaurants. I saw Shallow Hal. That was the worst I ever saw. Terrible, horrible, disgusting movie. I think the director never watched it after he finished filming. Stupid movie." I also enjoyed "Dumb and Dumber", but I would not consider it a master piece."

"I like to sit down and to laze around, I can spend an entire day without moving off the sofa. Me I am quite passive,I like to see life flowing."

"I had my driving licence in the last June. I don't want to be fined too soon. I love the cars. Hey I'm just 19 years old, it's normal. Every young men are little mad."

"Good or bad, I try to eat everything."

"I have an empty refrigerator and nobody takes care of things around the house. I have nobody to cook for me, so I go to restaurants. Me cooking? No idea! Me washing clothes? No idea! I can't do anything domestic!"

"Sometimes I feel like reading a book or playing computer games. At times I manage to go to a club. I like listening to music and I like different types of it: Metallica, Halloween, Enigma. I should say that the hours of rest I have are based completely on my mood, and my mood changes 10 times a day!"

"I don't need someone telling me what to do all the time. I don't like it when coaches talk to much, try to teach you too much." "If they talk to you from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. it drives you crazy."

"The guy just said that it's for tanking. I mean, at least I'm in history already."

Shadow

"I had to play my first match very early, so I just got to wake up at 9, I'm not used to do this, waking up at 9 I was completely out of the court, I was in the bed."

"You know why I want to win? Because of 15,000 reasons inside of the tennis court."

"I began to think with my head and everything went normal"

"I'm getting older, so I know a little bit the game (smiling). I know the game a little bit more. But as soon as you know the game better than before, you start to choke more."

"I have to play good tennis to show them I'm not the yo-yo from Moscow"

"Like normal human beings, I was afraid. I had eyes bigger than my face."

"I had won the US Open and even didn't took my vitamins. Since 6 months they were lying in my suitcase. I drank tap water on the court. That was my doping."

"It's too much maybe, but that's the dream. We live because of the dreams."

"you think about dinner, your car, playing golf and sometimes I thought about sex… But these thoughts don't have to get out of control, otherwise the point, the set or the match got lost very fast."

"I'm so happy, I'm so glad. I cannot describe what I'm feeling right now. It's just something that is just so great, it's the best. Better than sex, you can say that."

"I can't live with one tournament. I won Boston, so I'm a king there (laughter). That's it. I was happy for one day -- okay, for two days (laughter). That's it."

"You can destroy one racket. You can destroy a chair. But you can't destroy a racket and a chair in the same match. There has to be a limit. One racket. One or two, maybe. Otherwise this is the tennis of a sick person. People don't want to see sick people like me on the court, throwing their rackets at chairs."

"I'm not like Stefan Edberg; I'm not a robot. I'm an individual who gets mad. If I break a racket, who does it really hurt?"

"Sometimes breaking a racquet helps, You let out all the bad energy -- you have to let it out somehow. Also, I think a little drama in the final never hurts."

"If you can pay all my fines, it's okay. I can broke many. You know how much I paid already this year? Close to probably was 250 in Australia, close to $7,000, or even 10. Guys, for $10,000, you know what I can do? You don't want to know what I can do with $10,000. You going to go out to Head to tell them, no? 35, 36."

"I played one hour and a half, and I met the press for already 25 hours."

"We're in 16 of January, man. 16 of January, I don't know if I will be alive tomorrow. Don't ask me what's going to be in September."

"No, I didn't watch the [Thomas Johansson-Jiri Novak] match, actually. I was busy." - Platinum blonde-o-phile Marat Safin, to schoolboy-like laughter from journalists. "I was watching the movie." - Marat Safin clears up the confusion at Aus Open 2002.

BelgianWaffle

:D Found these in the "atp insider archive" on the official atp website.

“Not yet. It’s my first day on the job. Give me some time.”
- Marat Safin on not breaking a racquet in his first match of the year against Michael Chang in Auckland.

“Thank you. Thank you for the compliment.”
- Marat Safin after being asked if he had lost some weight when he had actually gained two kilos.

"Do you expect me to smile like an idiot on court? Nobody likes to lose, and I can’t be relaxed when I see on the scoreboard that I’m losing and making stupid mistakes. That’s just the way I am.”
- Marat Safin in Rotterdam on his demeanor following a first round loss to Max
Mirnyi

"He's catching, but he's young, you know. He has very good potential. He's a great player, and his potential is No. 1. I assume he's going to play a lot of matches, he's going to break other racquets. Is going to be big fight, you know. Depends how long I going to play, you know. ... I think he throws the racquet with emotions. That's how you
should throw the racquet."
- Goran Ivanisevic on Marat Safin's chances to pass him for the lead in most career broken rackets

"I pay the bills, I pay everything."
- Marat Safin, who recently won the ASAP Sports Most Quotable Player of the Year, on how he intends to keep new coach Mats Wilander happy.

“I don’t want to make him rich.”
- Marat Safin explaining why he’s making an extra effort to break less racquets - these days he gets fined $100 by coach Mats Wilander for each one he smashes

some new ones:

If I was Marat Safin, then each morning when I woke up I would say:" Thanks, Lord, for the fact that I am Marat Safin ". Do you do that?

Marat: No. I say:" Thanks for the fact that I had parents, who selected a profession for me.Thanks for the coaches, who taught me everything that I know. Thanks for sponsors, who believed in me ".

Shadow

By the way, about fate. I look at you: you are twenty three years old, you are beautiful, rich in success - a world star. Through such an impression, it would seem there is nothing left to wish for. Is it not boring to live, having done so much? Is there no feeling, that there is nothing thing more to strive for, to want, nowhere to aim?

Marat: I hate this term:" star ". Stars - they are in space, just large spheres of heated gas. But me - I'm Marat Safin, a normal person, with problems, pleasures and troubles. What does it mean - " nothing left to want "? Naturally, I want to be the number one again.

Once, your BMW was stolen. If they are reading this interview, what would you like to say to them?

Marat: Guys, since you had chance to take the car and not get caught, then I hope that it gives you happiness. Let someone get pleasure from this situation.

Shadow
09-22-2003, 02:56 PM
Are you always so kind and generous?

Marat: I'm not very generous - I don't make enough money to send gifts to strangers. But I love to give gifts to people close to me.

Shadow
09-22-2003, 02:59 PM
All of them?
Marat: I honestly believe that all women are wonderful, everyone in their own way. Two women alike do not exist in this world.

That’s why just to stop on one of them is just insane...
Marat: Don’t ascribe other people’s words on me. On the contrary, I think that it’s ideal to succeed in finding your right one, and I hope that it’ll happen to me.

And what kind of woman will have good chance with you, a brilliant celebrity like you?
Marat: Famous girls themselves don’t attract me very much.

Shadow
09-22-2003, 03:02 PM
So that means that you’ll be looking for a simple, modest but a beautiful girl?
Marat: Why beautiful? Beauty is not the most important value in a woman.

What is?
Marat: The soul, the character, the intellect.

So the intelligent women don’t scare you?
Marat: No. I myself try to read a lot.

Shadow
09-22-2003, 03:04 PM
Doesn’t that bother you?
Marat: In general, no. True, it is unpleasant, when you’re sitting with your friends, and a complete stranger approaches you and starts lecturing, “you didn’t do that right, the serve has weakened, couldn’t collect yourself in the last set...”

And what do you do? Get up and slack ’em on the neck?
Marat: No, I say, “Thanks a lot; I’ll try to play better next time.”

You have a stiff self-control.
Marat: They teach us that. And also, often, someone approaches me in the street and starts, “You’re Safin? No, are you really Safin? No, you’re probably kidding, you just look like Safin...” That’s why when they ask me who I am, I usually say that I’m Safin’s cousin.

That’s because you’re modest?
Marat: That’s because it’s stupid to try to prove that you’re you. And life is too short for spending it on every trifle thing.

ditto what Ilhame said!

I also like this one:

Press the car’s speed pedal 300km/hour and be carried away on a highway...

NO! That pleasure is for people who want to become a donor of organs quicker. I’m not ready to bring humanity profit that way, that’s why I drive carefully.

Here are some more quotes posted by Alex on Christine's forum:

"It's too much pressure. You have to think match by match and moment by moment or it drives you to distraction. I'm tired of all the talk about it. Everyone is obsessed with it...If I was the type of person who had tennis, tennis, tennis all the time and I went to bed and ended up dreaming about tennis, I would go nuts."-- Marat Safin freaking out at the thought of making a run at No. 1.

"We go for too much. First of all, we have to go for the urine testing, now we have to go to EPO -- I said to the ATP that I don't think it's correct, but they really didn't listen." -- Marat Safin, not real happy about EPO drug testing

"Wimbledon is not the tournament I love. I don't like how they treat the players. There are small things that don't cost them anything and they make such a big deal out of it. If they treat us this way, well, we have to treat them the same. We want to be respected, the way we respect Wimbledon, even if it is not the best Grand Slam on earth." -- Marat Safin, who apparently doesn't like Wimbledon.

"This year, I haven't been able to play even three consecutive weeks without becoming injured. Now I want to do well here in Barcelona and then the big tournaments. If I stay fit, my confidence will come back. I want to win Roland Garros. That's my main goal. I going to be at Roland Garros and take my chances. I am going to be dangerous this year."-- The dangerous Russian Marat Safin in Barcelona.

I know this thread is about our favorite Marat quotes but how about we post some quotes about Marat by other players or even magazines cos there are so many great ones out there. :D

I'll start :)

French Newspaper 'Liberation' (01.26.02): "The saviour of the Australian Open, and maybe at term of the male tennis, is Hercules with the face of an innocent. Safin is a star. A champion; a superb player and a clown. With the journalists Marat is the funniest, the most unpredictable tennismen, flinging a barrage of awful things while turning red like a young girl (or tossing off loads of outrageous remarks while blushing like a young girl.). In summary, at one moment the masculine tennis is looking for an equal for a golden pairing like Agassi-Sampras, Safin is the real treasure. He has the tennis ability and athletic quality of Sampras, the cold-bloodness of Agassi, the arrogance of Kafelnikov, the humour and the crazyness of Ivanisevic, the sense of spectacle and party of Noah Yannick. With a little extra, something so russian: the look of danger, of mystery, that he redeems. Well, Marat is a credible hero."

I love this one :D

Martina Navratilova was asked in 2002 US Open who was the most attractive male player and she said, " Marat, because he is just perfect."

Jessi

Jiri Novak: For me, the best player in the world is Marat Safin because I think he can play well on all the surfaces and he has great potential.

Jessi
12-12-2003, 07:28 AM
John McEnroe:With such charm, such a nonchalant smile, this guy is twice as dangerous... shortly he will eclipse Agassi if he continues this way... Never before has a Russian tennis player been so interesting as a personality."

Jim Courier (2001): “He’s the prototype for the new generation of tennis players. That’s the body. If you could pick one, if you could design one… that is exactly the body that you want. Because he’s fast and he’s smooth, and he doesn’t move like a guy normally moves 6-4 on a tennis court. You see those guys who kind of lumber around. This guy, man… He’s a real natural”

“If he could put it all together… who could stop this guy? On his best day, I don’t think there’s another guy who’s as good as he is… It’s really just a question of him putting it all together and keeping his head together. He’s young, there’s no reason he can’t have a beautiful career. It’s really gonna be in spite of himself if he does not.”

The Edmonton Journal (2003): And while there's no David Beckham yet on the horizon, hot-shot young men like Russia's Marat Safin are giving their soccer counterpart a run for his money in the cool-guy player sweepstakes.

This one is cute :)

Fabrice Santoro: "After my my fourth or fifth victory against him,
whenever he saw me, he put his hands on his head and said "No, please, not him!". He teases me too: "So, Santoro, still got your slice?" or " Tell me, you've been on the tour for a long time. Don't you think it would be a good time to stop now?". He's a nice guy, and I find that our matches bring us closer."

Is going to be big fight, you know. Depends how long I going to play, you know...I think he throws the racquets with emotions. That's how you should throw the racquet."

"I want to see Safin become the real deal. He is a great story. He comes out of a country where people have struggled for so long, is sponsored to go to Spain to learn the game, the language and the culture, he develops a sense of humour in three languages. He shows a lot of emotion on the court, a fantastic smile, he's a big, good-looking guy who plays in his first Grand Slam final and hardly misses a passing shot. Tennis has someone special and I hope it doesn't waste him."-John McEnroe

"He's an interesting and engaging character because he's at the same time heads or tails. He can give everything when he likes somebody, be very generous and do everything for that person. But at the same time, he's 21, he has lots of money and enjoys partying. So, he's not always serious. It's normal, he wants to enjoy his life. He asked himself a lot of questions and this is why his off-peak periods can last a long time. But he needs those ups and downs. He makes them work for him, more that a linear journey would do. Everybody has different objectives. For him, it's to enjoy his life because he knows that he only has one. I don't know if it's because of his incredible physique, but his personality is one of extremes .Whatever is his activity, I've the impression that he can't things by half. When he does party, he completely does it. When he practices, he can work really too hard. At the dinner table, he can eat very very much. He's never between the two extremes. For me, Marat is the James Dean of tennis. He loves life and can't refrain from profiting from it, even if it means that he burns his wings. He's got a beautiful face, he likes parties and women. But at the same time, he's not a gambler. The thing that he prefers is to be at the table with his friends, to be with people he appreciates. He's really nice and generous. Fifteen days ago, when I went to Geneva to practice with Nico (Escudé), it's Marat who came to the airport. That evening, we went to a restaurant. Of course, he paid for everybody. "When they ask me "When will Marat be #1?, I say "When he'll want it". But this year he has too many injuries. I even suggested that someone put a spell on him.. Because if we are talking about his professionalism this year, I have no complaints - he does everything right. It looks like the life tests him now, I think. All his injuries are illiogical and absurd, but otherwise, he has really grown up in last eight monthes, and improved his self-discipline - there's no doubt about it. I think that potentially he is #1 in the world." - Shamil Tarpishev

Locker-room talk is often tough to put a finger on, but not with Safin. Pull almost any player aside and they'll tell you that when Safin is on his game, playing his best, no one can touch him. Not even by the man rated the greatest of all time.

Like the works of his favourite artist, Salvador Dali, it's difficult to draw immediate conclusions about Marat Safin. Quotable, intruiging, and always full of character, Safin is one of the most intruiging and bewildering personalities on the ATP circuit. And he's got some game to boot. Safin will tell you he's an entertainer, not an artist, but he does admit the court can be his own canvas for expression.

John McEnroe (USO 02, after Marat’s 1st rnd victory over Kiefer): “And now you know why the men’s game wants a Safin. What he’s got… what he brings to the table, he brings a lot. If they market him properly, you’d see some big things for the men’s game.”

From: Australian Tennis Magazine, 2000 (Here Come the Gladiators – Marat voted #1 Hottest Male Tennis Player!

1. Marat Safin
Simply the best-looking male player on the planet, possibly the best-looking male as well. A true gladiator, a perfectly proportioned being and a tennis equivalent to Leo Tolstoy if only he could get that temper under control. Still, great champions should possess a healthy dose of madness and Marat needs to smash racquets the way some people need to crack their knuckles.
He is also extremely dry-witted and gives entertaining interviews. At the Tennis Masters Series in Toronto (which he won), he explained his addiction to racquet smashing. “Sometimes, you need this. And I think the people, they understand this. Because we are human beings and we need to try to break it because it’s only a racquet, it’s nothing else. But I know it’s not very nice on the court. It doesn’t look very, I would say, very educated.”
Some of Safin’s shots look like they might make holes in the court. In a few years time, when he has collected a number of Grand Slam titles, he will be shattering many women’s hearts as well.

Lleyton Hewitt: “The game needs a guy like him. He's a great personality for our game…”

"He's one of the best players around when he's on," Hewitt said. "He has the perfect physique for tennis. He's got every shot in the book and has a great personality for the game of tennis. It's disappointing that he's hardly been able to play, basically since the Aussie Open [in January]."

Is it uncommon to enjoy having parties in tennis world?

"No. There is a night life on the tour. We are not in bed at 9 h 30 watching a late nignt show on TV5! But Marat is able to sleep late before the day of his match as long as he can get up late. He can move forward his day like that. It's another philosophy and I like it. It's very rare that he loose a match because he is tired from a late night out. The risk is more about his mental fatigue... to blow fuses. When he's irritated, he really is."-Marc Rosset

Well, i didnt even like Haas before, cause i read a lot in the German press about him etc. and also the Davis Cup story last year you know. He was just unsympathic and arrogant to me and i also don`t like his acting on the court.
that was before i went to the WTC Dusseldorf in 2002. I saw him several times off the court and he was very rude, he always had a scrary look and when Fans asked for his autograph he just went off. And once he did remble me... and he didnt apologize.
After i was watching some practising i heard a security guy talking on the phone, he didnt know i was there and i was also the only one who was still there... he said on the phone that Haas was faking injury and acting again and that he will surely will be fit again for the FO. And that was just after Haas did announce his injury and that he couldnt play for the German team.
And also some other security guy i talked to said some interesting things from behing the scenes about Haas!
So just after this i dislike him more.

now, how about Quotes about Marat from Fans!? ;)

Shadow
12-13-2003, 12:27 PM
Liz: "I now know why Marat has such a large fanbase. The respect he has for his fans is amazing, not just going on my experiences, but from the way I saw him interact with other fans while I was there. That man is truley a gentleman."

Shadow
12-13-2003, 12:30 PM
Evelyn: "So, Marat was definitely very kind to all the fans, and very polite!"
"Anyway, I felt very fortunate to have finally met Marat. But I also feel lucky to have met so many nice Marat fans around the world, through all the sites dedicated to Marat, like this one! So, I feel that just like Marat was awarded with an Order for International Friendship, he has also spread the spirit of friendship amongst his fans, worldwide. And I think that's the real blessing of being a Marat fan!"

Cris
12-13-2003, 12:34 PM
Great idea! ;) Sweet quotes! :)

Shadow
12-13-2003, 12:38 PM
ami: "As much as I love Marat for his game, his charm , even his looks.. I really feel for him because of his vulnerability. He has a fragile core. But it is not because he is weak, it is because he is so sensitive. There is a haunting sadness about his losses. I cannnot imagine the burden he carries. To be so abundantly gifted ,to be so keenly aware of the responsibility and expectations this gift carries, and yet cursed with such terrible self doubt ..that inevitably this supposed talent deserts him when he wants it to work so desperately. His feet turn to lead and mind a chaotic mess of fear and adrenaline..

Marat,I think you need to learn to let go. You need to learn to attain a zen state of semidetachment.
Let the game come to you Marat .Let it flow.It is in your hands and feet, it is in your racquet and in your speed..The journey you want to make from now to the centrecourt US Open 2000 is internal..And when a journey is internal it can take decades or it can be over in an instant. You know this road. You have walked on it before. What you need , you already have...Good luck .."

Shadow
12-13-2003, 12:44 PM
Dee: "Anyway, Sue and I were very impressed indeed with our Marat - he was funny, charming, obliging, polite, friendly, outgoing, a great sport, beautifully built and most of all ABSOLUTELY DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!! Very sexy, a big hit with every female in the ground (and some of the men too!)"

Shadow
12-13-2003, 12:52 PM
Ami: "The talent like Marat Safin-, huge , awesome and effortless then is to be cherished.
He plays the spinning backhand stab volley with the same effortless ease as his sweetly hit forehand. Everything flows, everything comes from a higher plane on the day his mind is in sync with his abilities. His game goes to a magical place with a scary naturalness where other champions are rarely able to go. He has the physical ability to create magic on the court like no other."
"Sampras has said that he is perhaps the best returner of serve he has faced. Courier has echoed this recently. McEnroe two years ago implored ATP to not waste this prodigious talent, this personality. Kafelnikov has said that Marat will be as big as he wants to be, there are no limits for him."

Shadow
12-13-2003, 01:00 PM
Isabelle: "Watching Marat lately, I've been struck with how much he's improved his game - no one can say these days that Marat Safin is all brute force and power and nothing much else. He's learned to serve and volley, he comes to the net more often and wins the point, he's got much more incredible angles and depth in his strokes, and yes, he has developed "the touch", as they call it, the finesse in the sport that is so appreciated and admired."

"Not that 'finesse' necessarily means that the Wild Child in Marat has been tamed - not by a long shot! Not for nothing has he been called "the James Dean of Tennis". I know for sure that half the thrill of watching Marat play is how unpredictable he gets out there. He waves and flails his arms, he looks up to the heavens beseechingly, he lets out a hoarse shout of disgust with himself when he makes a stupid error, or else mutters to himself with that powerful jaw clenched tightly."

"And after all that, people, I say to you - Marat Safin is one of the shyest, most gentle persons on this earth. Yes he is. He may shout and yell bloody curses on court, he may be a certified case of a racquet abuser, and he certainly seems like a fierce gladiator to contend with out there when his temper is boiling. But all of it is directed at himself. This is a person who would first tear himself limb from limb before he even thinks about inflicting hurt or harm on others. The very idea would be horrifying to this soft-spoken gentle giant. : Sorry for the digression, but just had to discuss that particular point, which I don't think a lot of people have considered."

Shadow
12-13-2003, 01:02 PM
Isabelle: "Whereas when he's playing relaxed, and even almost with a lazy, loose attitude, that's when he proves the most dangerous."

"There's one line from that film that's really fitting for Marat at this point in his career: He has to let go. If he tries too hard to control the skies, the more that accidents and disasters will come his way. He has to loosen up, and to give up the control, in order to gain it. Does that make sense to you? It does to me! Let go, Marat! That is all the "balance" you need, that you spoke of before - the consistency that you crave will come when you learn to let go."

"And whether you display the angel or the devil in you out there on court, know that above and beyond the admiration, the adulation, the awe and wonder that you inspire when you walk out there with your racquet and "do your job" - you have first and foremost our respect. For your talent and skill, for your athletic ability, for your independence and fire. For the perpetual spirit in you that won't be tamed. Perhaps in time you will be able to master the "wild child", the "brat", the "rebel", but I don't think he will ever be tamed…. and I know that your true-blue die-hard fans will not have it any other way."

I hope you can meet him next year! :bigclap:

I wish he could play here. Brasil vs. Russia would be like a dream. But not in 2004. Want Russia wins Davis Cup.
There is Brasil Open (February) too. Moya, Guga and maybe Ferrero will play. I won't go... will be on same week of Carnaval. But if Marat would be there... haha... I would cancel my trip and spend all my money just to go to Bahia and watch him. :)
