Juan Carlos' push to #1

07-02-2003, 02:51 PM
This is where we obsessed fans can count numbers and create scenarios for Juan Carlos becoming #1...

Supposedly Agassi won't be defending his LA title or be playing for a while... so Juan Carlos has a great chance! (Agassi may change his mind just to be an ass.)

Chloe le Bopper
07-05-2003, 03:45 AM
So Agassi isn't defending LA apparently. Does that mean his points will fall off and that Ferrero can pass him if he does well in his next couple of tournaments?

07-05-2003, 06:10 PM
Does anyone know what Ferrero's injury is?

Ferrero's injured?

When was Juanqui injured??

It would be great if he gets to that top spot. :D

07-06-2003, 05:55 AM
I don't think he's injured...

Anyway, I want him to be #1. If he passes Agassi the same week that Federer passes him, I'll shit a brick.

07-06-2003, 06:04 AM
Maybe he does... he pulled out of Gstaad

I really want him to be #1... please try hard Juan Carlos!

I'm sure he'll get it some day, but I don't want it to nag him. I'd like him to get it this year, if only for a week.

Pleasssseeee vvvvaaammmoooosssss! I hope he'll play a lot of events on clay, etc... especially before Cincinnati where he has SF points to defend.

VAMOS! Stop being silly and take the #1!

07-06-2003, 06:05 AM
Also, he has final points to defend in Kitzbuhel in two weeks... so he better do what he's going to do pretty quickly. It'd be nice if he would play and win a tournament next week.

Don't choke this one up, Juanqui.

07-06-2003, 12:46 PM
 Agassi won't defend his LA title because he's playing Washington that week, which is worth more points

07-06-2003, 04:00 PM
Roger just won the Wimbledon title... good for him, but bad for Juanqui. He needs to stay on his toes now. He has a bit of a rankings cushion.

07-06-2003, 04:23 PM
I'm talking to myself a lot here. I just realized that Juan Carlos has had his best ever year at every slam so far.... QF at the Aussie, a win at the French, 4th round at Wimbledon.... hopefully he'll keep up the trend by winning the US Open ;)

Federer has sucked in the slams. I hope that this will allow Juan Carlos a better chance in the rankings since Federer can only use his best 5 events outside the slams... and he's already won 4 of them.

07-06-2003, 07:14 PM
IS he really injuried or he's just taking a rest? I did hear his shoulder isn't feeling so well after Wimby, but an injury wasn't mentioned. I hope he's just resting bcos there's a lot of work to do for the rest of the season.

If I'm not mistaken, if he wins Kitzbuhel, he will get the #1 ranking on July 28. The week of July 28, Baldy will defend his LA/Washington points and likely to take it back. But no matter, as long as JC can get there, I don't care how long. So Vamos Juanqui, you must win Kitzbuhel.

After that, Baldy has a lot of USO and TMS points to defend, like 700 and 750. JC has 75 and 390, so he has a great chance to pass Baldy. But Rogi now is in the lead and may very well stay there since he's very few points from USO and the 4 remaining TMS to defend, 150 and 260 respectively. Rogi had a great indoor season last year but only one optional event (Vienna) which he has to defend his title that's counted towards his ranking at the moment, and he already won 5 titles. So I think Rogi is a bigger threat. I think at the end of the year, it will be JC and Rogi battling for the yearend #1, which is what I would love to see, as long as no Baldy and Pandy.

Anyway, I hope JC can at least get to #1 at the end of July. VAMOS JUANQUI

07-06-2003, 10:53 PM
Federer has trouble though, loses early a lot. Let's hope for several of those early loses... especially at the US Open! :D

07-09-2003, 01:43 AM
Is Federer really playing this week in Gstaad? What a mad man, he just won Wimbledon! No rest, I guess he wants #1 just like Juanqui does. He almost lost today, but pulled through in 3 sets. I don't think he'll win the tournament though, must be exhausted... and jet-lagged. Could Ferrero and Federer be the top 2 in the rankings going into the US Open, over Agassi? *salivates*

I guess Ferrero deserves a rest this week, we don't want him to be tired out going into the US Open (Federer will be if he doesn't lighten up on the schedule!) but he'll be at Stuttgart next week and can win plenty of points there - has nothing to defend, I believe. And then he's got those finalist points to defend at Kitzbuhel :( But plenty to gain at Sopot, even though I find it strange that he would enter a tournament with such a weak field.

What's this situation with Baldy? How can he defend his titlist points from LA and semifinalist points from Washington in the same week? Some points must be coming off, right? Oh please, I hope Enqvist enters that week and beats Agassi early, as he always does.

Anyway, Juan Carlos has a great chance to be #1 going into Montreal, methinks. And then who knows who will be #1 at the end of the year - either Ferrero, Federer, or Agassi?

07-09-2003, 02:38 AM
I didn't see that, Leo. I guess that's why Agassi's LA points are coming off a week earlier.

I hope you're right. Even if JC is #1 for just one week, I want him to be there.

07-09-2003, 02:47 AM
btw, where did you find Juan Carlos' commitments?

07-09-2003, 03:38 AM
Leo, Rogi shows up at Gstaad bcos it's a Swiss tourney. He won't add any point even if he wins it bcos his lowest best of 5 is 175 pts already. And I doubt that he will win Gstaad bcos he should be tired by now, hopefully, he will lose to Alex.

Baldy's LA pts comes off and he has to defend them a week later as the tourney got pushed back 1 wk and overlap with DC, so he will lose the DC pts completely in mid Aug :D . But those optional events are not that important, as long as he doesn't show up in Montreal (he always skip Canada :D *fingers crossed for this year*).

Hopefully, Juanqui can win Kitz and takes the #1 ranking, he'll likely lose it back to Baldy when Baldy plays in DC (unless he loses very early, which is unlikely). Then, the 2 TMS will decide who got the #1 seed going into USO, ideally, it will be Juanqui and Rogi as the first 2 seeds :D .

I'm still not sure if JC will go to Stutggart, he is not on the committment list, he'll need a wildcard to get in and if he intends to go, he needs to ask for one now.

Scott, you can find JC's schedule on his site:
But it seems his listed schedule is very tentative.

07-09-2003, 03:49 AM
Thanks for the clarification, Vera. This race for #1 is really heating up. :D

07-09-2003, 03:49 PM
That site says he won't play in Canada :o

07-09-2003, 03:50 PM
I did find him listed on the Stuttgart site as having committed in like March, but he doesn't show up anywhere else. I hope that he plays... I REALLY want him to get the #1 ranking.

07-09-2003, 08:15 PM
That site says he won't play in Canada :o

I know, and I thought that was ridiculous. Ferrero always takes the TMS tourneys seriously so why would he choose to skip TMS Canada? I'd be very disappointed with him if he plays Sopot or Long Island instead of Montreal. But I still don't want him to play 5 straight weeks going into the US Open, so I hope he drops something.

07-11-2003, 02:50 AM
I think he will play TMS Canada... I doubt he'll play Sopot. I do wish he would play a little more than he is, though. The number 1 ranking is important to me at least if not to him ;)

Anyway, I'm sure he knows what's best for him and he'll do his best to get to the top spot without endangering his US Open chances, etc.

07-11-2003, 03:28 AM

I don't mind him not playing as much optionals, he played about 27 tourney plus DCs last year, that's a lot. This year, bcos of injury, he didn't play as much, but he got deep in most of the tourney so he's been working very hard.

He's not playing Stutggart (all the wildcards gone to German players already). I don't know about Sopot, I hope he's not playing bcos last year, he played til sunday in Kitz's final and didn't fly in to Canada until late, hence battling jetlag and fatigue, he didn't go far in Toronto. This year, Montreal and Cincy are both way too important for the ranking, he better don't skip Montreal, he better.

I think the number 1 ranking is very important to him, he'll try as much as he can to get there, methink.

07-11-2003, 04:47 AM
Yeah, I think we should trust Ferrero's judgment in this situation. Reaching #1 is one of his three top goals - along with the French and US Opens - and I know he wants to reach it as soon as possible so he will plan his schedule accordingly/carefully.

07-11-2003, 02:09 PM
Federer got a walkover into the Gstaad semifinals... I guess he's paying people for the #1 spot now

lmao... Scott, even if Fed had won Gstaad he had absolutely nothing to gain from it. He's just about maxed out his optional events.... he'd have gained 175 for winning, which is the same he would drop for his 6th best :D

07-17-2003, 03:03 PM
I hope Federer burns out with all this playing. Juan Carlos is going to need to actually play some events if he wants to be #1.

Hopefully he can win Kitzbuhel and add a few points that way.

07-17-2003, 10:43 PM
Juan Carlos is going to need to actually play some events if he wants to be #1.

So true :D . His two and a half weeks in idle got us all fret :p. I sure hope he enjoys his holiday  .

07-23-2003, 04:36 AM
Match #1: vs. Verdasco

If Ferrero wins this, he will overtake Federer for #1 in the Champs Race and will come within 3 matches of the #1 entry sytem ranking. :D

07-23-2003, 08:17 AM

07-23-2003, 05:01 PM
Ferrero won in two tiebreaks over Verdasco! One match down, three to go. And even if he doesn't become world #1 after this week *shudder* then at least he'll be #1 in the Champs Race again.

Btw Vera, Juan Carlos is now .500 in breakers in 2003 (9-9). These two tiebreak wins should boost his confidence.

07-23-2003, 05:38 PM
Yeah, 500 again in his TB record. At least he should be more comfortable in TB now that it's not negative.

Emmm, a tight match, wonder if he's still a little rusty. I think this is his only 3 weeks off gap the whole season, even after he injuried himself in Rome, he's only off 15 days. He better get into form very soon cos those guys waiting along the way are gonna be tough opponent. But I think he'll make it.

Vamos Juan Carlos.

07-23-2003, 10:19 PM
Ooops, mixed up the days. Today is only Wednesday, so Ferrero has to win tomorrow in the Round of 16 to become #1 in the Champs race again. Next opponent is Flavio Saretta, who lost 6 and 2 to Juan Carlos earlier this year on the clay courts.

07-24-2003, 07:21 AM
Well, he at least won one match ;)

Hopefully he'll keep going... vamossss

07-24-2003, 07:24 PM
Damn, this rain may very well cost him the ranking :fiery:. Now he has to play 2 matches within 6 hours, while Zabaleta had 3 days rest in between matches. Maybe it's not meant to be  , but I think his chance of winning the QF match is getting slim, unless Saretta is nice enough to give him an easy match.

07-25-2003, 02:32 AM
I guess the Gods don't want Ferrero at #1.

07-25-2003, 05:10 AM
Rain

He will still do it. I don't think Zabaleta has near the talent.

07-25-2003, 04:08 PM
7-6, 6-3 over Saretta (Now 10-9 in tiebreaks for '03).

His match versus Zabaleta is starting now. Please no more rain to screw up the schedule!

07-25-2003, 05:26 PM

Unfortunately, talent can't save a pair of tired legs. He's not in match form after a long lay off. It's really tough to find the energy to play 2 matches in a span of a short time. Mariano should thank his lucky star (and Younes :fiery: ). Damn, this' been the tournament I've been looking forward to since Wimby and those damn rain ruined it. :fiery:

Oh well, maybe he can do it during the hard court season. Hope he's not too disappointed himself. :(

07-25-2003, 07:16 PM
I can't believe he lost to Zabaleta :fiery:

At least he's in the lead as far as the champions race goes... we damn well better get the #1 ranking :fiery:

07-29-2003, 07:13 AM
Does anyone know if Juan Carlos has a chance to take the #1 this week? I hope he can.

07-30-2003, 03:04 AM
Juan Carlos couldn't play his match today because of rain, but of course his potential semifinal opponent, Coria, got to play his match :fiery:

Luck isn't on JC's side, but I really want him to win!

07-30-2003, 04:05 AM
Unfortunately there's no chance for Juan Carlos to reach #1 this week. But I would still like to see him win Sopot and then do well in Canada.

07-30-2003, 05:42 PM
Are you sure? He's only like 120 points behind... if Agassi lost in the 3rd round and Juan Carlos won Sopot, couldn't he be number one? Oh please oh please. I really want him to take the #1 ranking!

He won his match today easily, btw :D

JuaNQui FoReVeR
07-30-2003, 08:47 PM
No, he has no chance this week from sources I have read.

He should get it after the Open I believe, with Andre defending a lot of points.

Go Juanqui!! :bounce:

07-30-2003, 09:43 PM
He could get to #1 IF he wins Montreal and IF Agassi doesn't play there.

But first of all, it's still IFFY that IF he's actually gonna show up in Canada. :( And it'll probably take a miracle for him to win it. :o

07-31-2003, 05:49 AM
We just have to hope that Federer and Agassi both perform poorly at the US Open and that Ferrero does well... winning it would be nice.

07-31-2003, 01:26 PM
Well both Agassi and Federer do have more points to defend at the US Open, after all. A final and 4th round, rsspectively. As long as Ferrero makes it past the 3rd round (god I hope so) then he's winning more points for his ranking.

07-31-2003, 03:31 PM
Ferrero won his 2nd round 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 over Cermak. *Phew* Close call. Juanqui has now made the quarterfinals, at least, in 10 of his 13 events this year. :D

He saved two match points in his match today... I'm glad that he won, but he could have done well to do it a little easier. That little Coria is starting to think he's the King of Clay... Juan Carlos needs to give him a good spanking.

08-01-2003, 02:20 AM
Yes, like in Monte Carlo! 2 and 2! :bounce:

08-01-2003, 04:56 PM
Wow, I just realized that they added the 6th optional on the ranking to compensate the schedule changes. So next week when last year Cincy's point falls off, JC is actually behind Federer for like almost 100 points. If he's not carefully, he could be #3 :( . C'mon, off Sopot and head to Montreal for some hard practice, QUICK.

It's gonna be a tough match. Go Juan Carlos!! :D

08-06-2003, 04:39 PM
It appears as if Ferrero is serving very well so far in Montreal. In his first round match, Juan Carlos hit 11 aces, won over 80% of his first serve points and over 70% of his second serve points. In his match today, he is actually out-serving Younes El Aynaoui: 12 aces to 8! In his first three service games of the match, he didn't lose a single point. And this is against a great returner and a player he's never beaten in 5 matches! Unfortunately there is a rain delay now, at 6-3, 5-3 Ferrero. But I like his chances in this tournament now. He's already looking better than Federer or Roddick. :)

Break point conversion is poor thoguh; just 2/9 today.

I don't think he'll be #1 any time soon. Maybe he should just aim to end the year at #3, at least better than last year. The American TMSs this year is just one horrible experience for him, losing all 3 in R32. I'm not putting up much hope for USO. It's so sad that he lost so early again , so sad.

08-13-2003, 06:36 PM
It was so close... Gaudio beat Juan Carlos 6-7 7-6 6-4

I hope he does better at the US Open. I think he can, hopefully he'll step it up. Pf.

I think he should still finish the year #2 at least... ahead of Agassi.

08-13-2003, 06:42 PM
Let's put it that way, I'm thinking there's 4 ppl playing for 3 musical chairs. Hope he wont end up in the 4th.

I don't know if he can step it up. It's getting unpredictable, as his performance on hard is always quite unpredictable. One day, he plays like he grown up on it, the next day... well, you get the idea. Though I'll still say, I want to believe!

Wonder if he'll show up in Long Island now that he lost so early here. Maybe more practice will help?

Hopefully he does something big at the US Open.

08-14-2003, 04:01 AM
Well, at least Federer also lost. Now we need Roddick to go down. If he became #1 in the world, hell would freeze over.

08-14-2003, 04:54 AM
He better play Long Island to get some match play on the hard. atp[tennis.com says that he's committed, but I guess we won't be sure until the draw comes out.

All 4 times he beat Gaudio, Ferrero had dropped the first set. So when Juan Carlos decided to win the first set today, I got worried.

Good chance for Juan Carlos to gain some points in Long Island, if he plays and plays well. The website also says he will play... though they say he's ranked #1. Positive thinking ;)

He can still do it, we need a great showing at the US Open... he's performed well in the grand slams this year... posting his best showings ever in each one, so hopefully he can keep that trend alive.

08-17-2003, 09:08 PM
Ferrero isn't playing Long Island :fiery:

Ferrero has lost early in ALL the North American Masters Series on hard this year. He's gone backwards from last year, not even posting one half decent result. I would be extremely surprised if he won more than 2 or 3 rounds at the USO, and don't doubt that every guy ranked 5-8 is hoping that they get in his quarter...

His results have been a complete, miserable dissapointment since Wimbledon.

Well, at least Federer also lost. Now we need Roddick to go down. If he became #1 in the world, hell would freeze over.
It just might. Poor satan

08-18-2003, 04:15 AM
Yes, how come Ferrero can play such good hard court tennis in Asia/Australia yet collapse every time on U.S. soil?

Does anyone else think that maybe Ferrero could do with a coaching change? I mean, I love Antonio and he's obviously helped Juan Carlos come a long way, but I want to see his game continue to improve and for that Ferrero might need some new guidance/direction. I mean, you can see how a new coach worked wonders for Roddick… Anyway, I doubt that Ferrero will dump Antonio unless his results really start to become sour. They've been together for so long that it might be too hard for Juan Carlos to do.

08-18-2003, 12:52 PM
I think he should, Leo. Ferrero obviously has more talent than he's making use of... he needs a coach that will help him expand his game on other surfaces. He needs someone to help his net game, etc. Plus just a change of pace might be good.

Whatever happens this year, Juan Carlos will likely finish in the top 5 and as the reigning French Open champion, so it's still been a very nice year. But, I think that all of us know he has the talent to finish #1, and I won't be satisfied until he has done that and won all the grand slams, excepting maybe Wimbledon.

In the short term, I think that parting with Antonio would do a lot more harm than good. He seems to be the sensitive type, so I can imagine him following up the coaching switch with a miserable season... Antonio isn't JUST his coach, the guy is like family. And when you've had family ripped away from you, it's unlikely that you would want to drop what you have left... so erm, I can't see him dropping Antonio. Ever.

He won today :D

Way to go Juanqui! Keep it up! :D

His friend Tommy is getting his ass kicked, though

08-31-2003, 04:10 AM
i saw from the end of the second set and he played really well --did neone see that amazing 'shot of the tournament' he played between his legs and passed chela?!! he was so cute after that he was really really proud of himself and couldnt stop smiling lol

newayz i hope he keeps playing this well and may have to meet hewitt in fourth round...:S

08-31-2003, 05:19 AM
Definitely the shot of the tournament! :D

08-31-2003, 12:58 PM
JCF looked absolutely beautiful last night. He is so silky smooth on the court. That's what first caught my eye about him long ago.

And he was darling after that between the legs shot. :)

08-31-2003, 01:52 PM
That was the greatest moment in tennis for me this year (after his RG win of course). He was so cute after that shot. It was quite a moment.

09-01-2003, 01:39 AM
Juan Carlos Ferrero is the night match tomorrow on USA! :D I'll get to see his entire match probably... that's wonderful. Too bad it's against Martin.

I really hope Juan Carlos either wins the tournament or does really well. If he just goes a few rounds further than Federer he could be #1. VAMOS!

09-01-2003, 03:41 AM
Dammit, I would be able to see him play live at the Open if he wasn't shceduled for the night match! I missed him last Wednesday and now I will misss him tomorrow because of the damn scheduling. :(

09-01-2003, 09:25 AM
GO JC!!! so so so gorgeous...as long as he keeps that moutache off.

Good luck against Martin!

09-01-2003, 04:28 PM
I'm sorry Leo :o

But it looks like it's going to rain all day so neither of us will get to see him anyway.

I don't think Juan Carlos is going to get to play his match tonight :fiery:

Rain sucks... why can't they have a damn covered court?!

I was going to get to see him live :(

09-02-2003, 02:24 AM
Juan Carlos won't play tonight

So much for seeing him live... maybe tomorrow night.

09-02-2003, 02:24 AM
maybe you still will tomorrow?

09-02-2003, 04:00 AM
No, Roddick is the night match tomorrow  And Ashe is full of Americans... with Federer as the exception.

I hope that they are letting Ferrero play tomorrow. The tournament director said something about splitting up the men's 4th round matches, but that really wouldn't be fair to the players that didn't get to play until Wednesday, as they are splitting up the different halves of the draw. I hope he didn't mean that, or that I misheard. It wouldn't surprise me, though. They want to give Bobblehead and Insane Martane as many night matches as they can, it seems to fire them up.

Still, it won't save Martin from getting his ass spanked by Juan Carlos. VAMOS JUANQUI!

I really hope he can play tomorrow, on any court, even if I don't get to see him. I want him to win and have enough energy to win the tournament :)

09-02-2003, 04:16 AM
Complete wash-out. I have no idea where Ferrero will be playing tomorrow since the schedule is not being updated on usopen.org ... He won't be on Arthur Ashe though, according to USA Network.

09-02-2003, 12:41 PM
Ferrero is on Armstrong.

He and all my other favorites will play while I'm in class  What a bummer.

Good luck, Juan Carlos! Kick some ass!

09-02-2003, 11:21 PM
He and all my other favorites will play while I'm in class  What a bummer.

welcome to my world!!! but thank god for laptops :worship:

well another wash out...oh sorry i was confused and thought that they would just use the schedule from the previous day..i didn't realise they would make a whole new one considering practically no matches were played anyway

09-02-2003, 11:37 PM
No. 3 Juan Carlos Ferrero, awaiting his fourth-round match against American Todd Martin that was supposed to take place yesterday, had tired of foosball last night and was now tucked into a corner playing cards with his coach and girlfriend. He kept a steely gaze as he flipped cards into the middle of the table.

What are you playing?

“It’s a Spanish card game.”

Who’s winning?

“Not me.”

When asked if he was as good at cards as he was at tennis, the French Open champion looked bewildered, unable to understand the question in English. His girlfriend came to the rescue, wagging her finger back and forth and whispering, “Noooooo.”

LOL cuttteeee

09-03-2003, 03:29 AM
Well, Juan Carlos is up 6-2 0-0* deuce #6... he's had 5 break points in this game... so I think that he's in pretty good shape. But, there's going to be no more tennis tonight, so hopefully he'll come out on fire tomorrow.

Of course they were able to get Agassihole's match in

They should just play the tournament an extra few days to give time for the backlog. It's not really fair to make some players play matches every day while others get rest.

Anyway, I don't know when Ferrero will be on court tomorrow (or if he will at all), but good luck to him! VAMOS!

They shafted JC big time, letting Roddick go on before him, when he's already started his match and is behind Agassi. What typical bullshit from these organizers.

09-04-2003, 11:10 AM
that is PATHETIC!!! thats so not fair
oh well...hope rain clears up today and he can actually get to play...

09-04-2003, 11:17 AM
JC/Martin will follow Sugiyama/Schiavone match (7-6 5-4 so could be finished very quickly)

pic from rainy day:

I'm so jealous of her.

If Juan Carlos doesn't get to play today I'm going to boycott the rest of this US Open. He should have played yesterday, but they put Roddick on.

So now Agassi and Roddick are the only men into the quarterfinals... fancy that.

what a sweet victory that would be...vamos jc!

09-05-2003, 06:10 AM
He's so cute...People who have real player should watch it and at the end he looked really restles and started drumming his fingers on the table...well, made me laugh!!!

Q. Todd won a lot of points at the net in the sets he won. What were you able to do in the fifth set to change that?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I didn't understand so good.

Q. His play at the net was very aggressive in the third and fourth sets. What did you do differently in the fifth set to kind of take that away?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, I think when you do a break early, he is a person maybe he doesn't come really good to the net. I can pass easy than maybe the third and the fourth set.

You know, maybe I was serving better in the fifth than in the third and the fourth. And also is the key, that he didn't come to the net.

Q. Were you pretty confident going into the fifth you would win? You've got 10 years on him. It's very humid.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, I know. I was very confident in the fifth. Also in the whole match 'cause I was playing good. You know, I had a lot of breakpoints in the fourth set and I think I could win in that set. Finally, I couldn't. I try to fight all the time in the fifth set to try to get the match.

Finally, I think I did it pretty well.

09-05-2003, 04:28 PM

09-06-2003, 12:51 AM
He did already play 5 and a half hour in the past 2 days, compares to Baldy's 2 hr and 5 mins match today against Coria. But he doesn't look too tired, and having a 2-1 edge against Baldy should keep him motivated. Oh God, please let him win.
