Photos from the tournament

I just want to share my photos (http://home.comcast.net/~retroarts/tennis/index.html) from the tournament. I went on Monday and had a blast.

I want to go tomorrow, but only if I can get a seat at box level. I forgot about buying my ticket for Tues on Monday and by the time I thought about it at the end of the Malisse/Lee match, the box office was closed. I do want a good seat to watch James play. The rest I could care less about. Mardy Fish and Taylor Dent play Tues night, but with Taylor's penchant for retiring, I'm not sure if buying a ticket for the night session would be worth it. He's a hottie, but his matches are best left for tv viewing due to his unreliability (same could be said about Fish considering the way he retired last week). Andre also plays Tuesday night, but I'm not as much of a fan anymore after watching him act an ass with a ball boy during the celebrity tennis match Monday night.

my pics: http://home.comcast.net/~retroarts/tennis/index.html

I posted the low res version of the pictures, but I do have very high res versions available (each image is about 2.5 mb), so if one strikes your fancy, I am willing to give you the high res version untagged so you can get it printed.

I took pictures of every guy that looked like tennis pro, so that everyone could see their favorite. I only recognized Dent, Blake, Ginepri, Karlovic, Cahill, Agassi, Bryan twins, Joanna Garcia, Lee, Malisse, Ashley Fisher(who was kind enough to tell me his name and seems like a very sweet fellow) and Travis Parrot. The other people, I don't know who they are, but took snaps of them as they exited either the court or the player's lounge entrance. If you can ID them, that would great.

No, I didn't see Mardy. He is supposed to play tonight after the Agassi/Lisnard match, so I assume he's in LA. Who knows if he'll actually play though, since he's so 'delicate'. I'm not spending any money on night tickets to see him or Taylor play.

Sorry, no sweetheart. I missed that match. Sorry.

Someone watched Jim Thomas pictures and he plays tomorrow, so I'll try and get some photos of him. He plays on the Grandstand court and I have a box ticket, so hopefully I can get a seat that allows me to get great photos.

Are there any other player photo requests? I'll try my hardest to get photos.

Here are my day 2 photos (http://home.comcast.net/~retroarts/tennis2/):

Hey Binkygirl - you're photos are GREAT! Especially day 2's of X with Blakey. Wow! I have some of X with Olly at Wimbers that are real nice but cannot work out how to get them on the site! Nevermind maybe one day I will. But these are great and it looks fabulous at the tourney. You are LUCKY!

PS: Loving X's bun in his hair! ;-)

Here's my observations from today.

Graydon Oliver: He was tense from the moment he stepped on the court today to the moment he left. He barely cracked a smile. His wrist was bothering him and he had the trainer come out and wrap it. His doubles partner was Dominic Hrbaty; Hrbaty proved to be the weakest link in match against Karlovic and Hernych, because his multiple unforced errors ended up costing him and Graydon the match. They lost in straight sets, something like 5-7,5-7. In the second set, they had a break, but unforced errors evened things.

Umpire Norm Christ was being followed around by cameras all day. I wasn't sure what it was for.

Tripp Phillips is very cute and likes to flirt. After his match with partner Jim Thomas, he sprinted up the steps and started chatting with this cute blonde girl. He seemed to really enjoy the conversation. He is definitely aware of his good looks and their effect on women. He doesn't mind using them at all. Jim Thomas is super nice and extraordinarily unassuming. I get the sense that he's a very decent person.

Xavier Malisse dropped in on James Blake's practice session with some sort of ice pack strapped to his inner arm. He walked on the court, showed it to James, and they both laughed. Then he walked off, rejoined his girlfriend who had been waiting for him, and left. Later that night, he played a great match against Tommy Haas and took out the defending champion after playing a lackluster, error filled first set. He defeated Haas in three sets. In the second set, he jumped to a large lead, struggled a bit as Haas regained some footing, but finally prevailed by raising him game level. Malisse seems to be a genuinely very nice person and treats everyone very politely. He is very much the gentlemen. He and James Blake make a fantastic doubles team.

Chela came out after his three set match with Tursanov and graciously signed autographs. The he and a security person went off to the food court. Early, I had spotted Hrbaty buying lunch there, as well as Jonas Bjorkman. Bjorkman is quite handsome in street clothes. He was buying Chinese food and sampling some different meats before making a choice. He was very nice to the food service girl and had no sort of diva attitude at all.

James Blake practiced today wearing an orange shirt. I'll have to call him the 'Orange Avenger' from now on. He signed autographs after practicing and seemed very much on autopilot during that process as if his body was there, but his mind didn't want to be there and was in a completely different place. He gave off a nice vibe, signed every autograph, gave programmed answers, etc; no fan left dissatisfied.

Andre Agassi arrived at the practice court with 2 burly body guards. The guards told the sparse crowd to,'Make way.' Once Andre was on the court, he retreated to the furthest corner away from the crowd, which was pleasantly shady, sat in a chair and talked on his cellphone. After that, he hit with Paul Goldstein, Dmitri Tursonov, and his coach Darren Cahill. Darren still has a very lovely form; too bad injuries made him retire so young. Andre never once looked at the crowd.

Vince Spadea arrived at his doubles match drinking a Sprite soda (for those not in the USA, its a sugary carbonated drink). I found that odd. His partner was Martin Gonzalez of Argentina, who seemed a very nice chap (he accidentally hit a guy on the other team twice and raised a hand to apologize each time). I got the sense that he and Vince were not friends at all. Vince didn't acknowledge Gonzalez much on the court, he didn't do the hand slap thing that all of the other doubles teams at the tournament do after shots. For Vince, Gonzalez was merely a tool to help him play doubles.

Amir Hadad lost to Richard Mello in singles. Hadad seems very chubby for a professional athlete. With his build, he's better suited to football. On court, he was whiny at times. He also threw his racket. Mello quickly romped through the first set thanks to a large number of unforced errors from Hadad. Hadad doesn't play high percentage tennis at all. He wants to hit the perfect winning shot, instead of concentrating on getting the ball in.

Cyril Saulnier teamed up with Grosjean for doubles. Cyril has beautiful light blue eyes and is overall an attractive man. He's much taller than Seb. They look funny playing together. Cyril is a nice man who was a bit baffled by all the fan attention after the match. Sebastian very quickly left the court after the match accompanied by a tournament official. He didn't want to interact with fans at all. I thought he might break into a sprint as he exited the court; he even gave an anxious look back over his shoulder as he scampered away.

Brief tidbit on James Blake's exit (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=47401)

I forgot to mention that on Wednesday I spotted Jon Lovitz in the food court towards the end of the day. Lovitz had on the same outfit he wore Monday for the celebrity tennis match. I hope he washed it. I also saw Steven Perry, the former lead singer of the 80s group Journey, strolling around. He was darkly tanned and wearing a t-shirt and shorts. I asked if I could take his photo and he said,'Oh no, I can't do that, but I can shake your hand.' I congratulated him on Journey getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and then I went on my way.

Today, I saw Karlovic and Hernych take on MacPhie and Leach in doubles. MacPhie and Leach won the match, but it was very close, Karlovic and Hernych were not easily deterred, but in the end it was unforced errors from Hernych that sealed his team's losing fate. After the match, I talked to Rick Leach a bit. I asked him about his old partner Jim Pugh (they were selected for Davis Cup several times back in the 90s) and he told me that Jim was teaching in Manhattan Beach. He is a pleasant person and seemed pleased that I remembered the old days. Brian MacPhie was nice too. I remarked on a televised exhibition match that he played against Andre Agassi several years ago and told him he played well. (He lost 1-6, 4-6. The first set's score was the result of nerves - he was a student at USC at the time - and the second set's score was reflective of his ability at the time - he was an excellent college singles player - I wonder what went wrong for him on the tour, there were high hopes for him at one time). Brian was chatting with another fan and said that his wife was having a baby and that he planned to take a few months off to enjoy it, while also teaching tennis locally (gotta make money somehow!). Brian liked having his picture taken and is very cute with a head full of brown curly hair. Rick Leach has a hot bod for a 40 year old (his wife has a nice playground to keep her occupied).

Karlovic's girlfriend was escorted in just before the match started. I quickly snapped a photo of her and she asked me,'Why did you do that?'.

I told her,'You're Karlovic's girlfriend, right?'

In a surprised voice, she replied,'No, I'm his wife.'

I was really surprised, because I read on this site that she was his girlfriend. I must've looked very stunned, because she asked me,'Where did you get that information?'

I told her about the forum and she said,'Well thats the wrong information.'

Then she asked,'Who are you?'

I told her I was a tennis fan and she seemed satisfied with that answer and said,'Oh, ok.' and half smiled at me. I told her that I'd delete the photo of her that I took, because I wasn't trying to offend her or anything. She was very nice about it and said that I didn't have to, but I went ahead and just deleted it.

Aspelin and Perry withdrew from the tournament because Perry has a hurt stomach muscle. There was a legends doubles match today featuring Brian Gottfriend paired with Raul Ramirez and the Armitraj Brothers, Vijay and Anand. I caught the end where both teams were walking off court. Vijay's son was there (I don't remember his name) and he was looking like a hip LA cutie, flashy sun glasses, gelled hair, and sharp clothes. He is shorter than his Dad, lol! Vijay Armitraj is very vivacious and was enjoying talking to people after the match. The fans who were talking to him were the older variety and were lavishing praise on him for his career accomplishments back in the day. He was lapping it up with a humongous smile. His brother, Anand, was also chatting with people, but his personality is much more sedate than his gregarious older brother. I asked the elder Armitraj to smile for a picture and he said,'For you, of course.' What a sweet man! I really liked him. A cute Asian girl approached him and started chatting with him and he seemed 'interested' if you know what I mean. She was the last fan around talking to him and asked him if she could have some water (i.e. the Evian water kept on ice for the players!). He said,'Of course,' and gave it to her. She noted that it wasn't very cold and a tournament official who happened to be walking by said,'M'am those were just put in there, so they aren't very cold.' I thought that was hysterical.

I also saw Leif Shiras and asked him if I could take his picture. He said yes and said that it didn't happen very often that he got photo requests. He was very tanned and has light cornflower blue eyes that complimented his skin tone. We chatted a bit and he told me about his boys, ages 12 and 14 who play tennis competitively. I asked him if Geoff Grant still worked for The Tennis Channel and he said that Geoff left and was working in commercial real estate in Baltimore. The ladies in Baltimore are very lucky, Geoff is a hot red headed guy (http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=geoffgrant5ub.jpg). Yum.

James Blake had two bleach (http://img79.imageshack.us/my.php?image=barbies8pg.jpg) blonde Barbie (http://img79.imageshack.us/my.php?image=barbies25xj.jpg) types, his coach, and John Mayer in his box during match. As I mentioned before, the line calls were ridiculously bad in Ginepri's favor. The bad line calls started early on within the first three games of the first set and James quickly became alarmed. They added up throughout the first set and at one point, James comedically got on his knees and begged umpire, Norm Christ, to reconsider. His pleas were ignored and the crowded roared with displeasure at the umpire. James also gifted Robbie with a good amount of unforced forehand and first serve errors. He kept going for free points on his first serve as if he were Andy Roddick. It was a poor idea and it was reflected in the score. In regards to the unforced forehand errors, they were the result of James trying to hit blazing winners, instead of just trying to hit the shot so that it stayed in the court. He had no interest at hitting as many shots as needed to win a point, he went for outright winners. That approach, coupled with the insanely bad calls at key moments, proved to be his undoing. Ginepri didn't have to do anything special to win the match, although he was moving very well and hitting the target with superior accuracy. I could really tell that Robbie has been working hard. James lacked the confidence to challenge the new and improved Robbie Ginepri. Players on the tour can smell fear, I think his career will most be on the downslide at this point. He'll be around for a few more years but will never attain his previous success.

I saw his practice session yesterday and he wasn't being pushed much. He was smugly hitting forehand winners against a distinctly older, somewhat fawning practice partner. His coach, Brian Barker, looked on approvingly. However, James has all the shots, but doesn't have a solid match play strategy to rely on. That should have been fixed a few years ago, but James refused to switch coaches, as advised by many, including Davis Cup captain, Patrick McEnroe.

I saw him gesture and say something to the ball boy that came off as,'What's the matter with you? Get the ball.' It was during the warm up and the celebs had been retrieving their own balls. I just didn't like the way he did it. I'm sensitive, so it bothered me.

People reading this thread are interested in pictures and recaps of the tournamment so she was just letting them know where more pictures and reports could be found. And it seems like some people have appreciated this. :)
Plus, being rude about it doesn't help anything.

About Andre being mean to ball kids....with the pressure during a real match this is absolutely possible but it wasn't.....I can't imagine him doing that during a pro-celeb match. If anything, maybe he was just joking around?
