GWH has a thread at Gaudio's, and Lee at Guga's, and other players forum as well, so let's have one here. It would be interesting as Roger has a lot of fans from all over the world...

Show pics of your city, your region, your country...or maybe a view from your window!

I'll start. This is Bern, the capital of Switzerland. My home for the last 16 years. :)

view of the Old Town

and the famous landmark of Bern, the Zytglogge (Clock Tower), portal to the Old Town

the Aare river encircles part of the Old Town, here shown with the Münster church. in the summertime many people swim or float in these clean waters...

i'll look for more pics later to share. Ok, your turn! :)

To find some pictures of your home city town village, I suggest to use a search engine (yahoo, google, msn, etc...) and type "pictures of (your city)". It could show some pictures. And also the official website of the tourism of your city could contain some nice pictures...

Hope this helps....

Anyway, my turn. Here's where I was born, Jeju island, South Korea.

1st pic: Jeju habor

2nd pic: One of many seaside cliffs. Jeju island is a volcanic island like Hawaii, so there are lots of cliffs, waterfalls and mounds.

3rd pic: Peak of Mountain Halla, a resting volcano. Approx. 6500ft-high.

4th pic: A Garden of Crinum(an indigenous orchid of Jeju)

5th pic: A Buddhist temple, along with **** flowers which Jeju is famous for in spring time.

Yes huge flood in the year 2000 - but wait that was at night then and we were standing outside having a shovel in our hands and trying to keep the water away from our building/cave... so I believe these pictures (which I haven't seen before to be honest) must date from the other huge flood they had in 1989 and that was before I lived there

Hi, Nocko. How are you? :wavey:

Were you born in Kobe? I remember the earthquake which was so huge that the almost whole city was ruined and lots of people were killed, right? Good to hear of your uncle's family was OK though. I wonder if the damages have been fully recovered since then.

So you're living in Yokohama, the 2nd biggest city in Japan, isn't it? It looks like Busan in Korea. Isn't there a very famous song about Yokohama? It's a pretty old song and I don't remember the title.

I haven't ever been in Japan. I hope to have a chance to be there someday. I'd like to see around Tokyo, Kyoto and Sapporo(spelling?) and to take a bath in the famous Japanese hot spring(!) .

But, Japan is the island of earthquake and volcano---that mean we have many hot springs here! :p Yeah, it is nice, you should go there and enjoy your bathtime esp. outdoor spa!
Yokohama song--- maybe *Blue light Yokohama* ???There are many songs!
Sapporo! How come? what are you interested in Sapporo? ( it is good place, though) Food? :p
Kyoto is great, too. Kyoto has long history more than 1000 years! Streets are nice, and there are many temples and shrines. But don't visit there in summer! it's incredablly hot!!! I recomend Autumn. sooooo beautiful! :hearts:

Unfortunately I ve never been to Korea. your pics are very beautiful! ( many Japanese visit to your country these days, it's kind of boom.) and nice to hear that Busan is similar to Yokohama. Maybe every port cities in the world looks something similar. ;) I'd like to visit your country in near future. :)

OMG. I didn't know that. I hope you and all the people in Tokyo are doing well. It sounds more horrible to me because of last year's tsunami. Having heard of it, I'm scared of the earthquake now since, you know, I'm living in San Francisco where a huge earthquake occurred in late 80s and small quakes are very frequent as well. It seems like a time bomb:scared: .

Let's change the subject.

You're right. The title of the song I mentioned was "the blue light of Yokohama". My dad used to like that song actually ;) .

If you visit Korea for a sightseeing, I'd like to recommend to see Sorak Mountain(and its surrounding area) and Jeju island. I can confidently say that those two are must-see places.

Yeah, I miss his playing, too. I feel like now we are in the off season... Oh, I hope he will be fine soon and come back with his top form in Cincy!!

Well, I doubt there is a volcano in Switzerland (only beautiful Alpine mountains!), but I am not 100% sure... Earthquakes don't happen so often, but a small one happend sometime this year around Basel, It could be felt also in Zurich, although I didn't feel it... Yes, there are some hot springs (Thermalbad) in Switzerland!! Those are often used for purposes of health... :)

You know,(oww, rogi said this word so often :p ) we have lots of fireworks festivals in summer, and I went to see the big one last saturday(aug. 13)
This fireworks was held on Tokyo bay, from two small ships. it was incredably beautiful.
I saw it from the restaulant beside to the bay.(--on 7th floor )with my co-workers. We could see from the bottom to the top. we could see even the base ships of fireworks and other ships arround there to watch. They had 12000 shots that day!!! It is one of most typical Japanese summer! I couldn't skip it every year. I was so excited, and enjoyed the summer of our country!
these pics are not mine, but very close to my impression. ;)

4. A view from the Royal Ontario Museum (aka ROM)
5. Pearson Airport, which is one of the busiest air ports in North America.
6. This is New City Hall also called Nathan Phillips Square. They are planning to give it a major facelift within the years to come. Can't wait to see what kind of new design they come up with.
7. Old City Hall

Hello Suktuen mate :) ,you`re from China aren`t you? China has some pretty beutiful places from what I`ve seen on TV. Especially the huge river gorges in the south look spectacular & are often used in movies. Of course they`re currently using Shanghai as a backdrop to Mission Impossible III  .

BTW. I`m from Melbourne, AUS~ if you`re a tennis fan then I think you know where that is  . Of course I think Melbourne is a beautiful city, & it`s a pity the Australian Tourism Commission doesn`t use the Aussie Open as more of an opportunity to promote the place. I don`t mean writing the city`s name on the court. Instead they should have commercials showing more of Australia than just Ayers Rock [Uluru],& the standard Sydney Opera House photos.. Australia`s a huge place & there`s vast diversity of beutiful scenery. I`d like to post some photos of Melbourne but just now I don`t have a PC, though I plan to buy one soon. Then I`ll try to show you some cool photos [that you won`t find in a travel brochure].

:) Two years ago I moved to Japan & am currently living in Fukuoka city~ which is the largest city in the South West of Japan,& quite close to South Korea. Fukuoka is naturally my favourite city in Japan & was voted "most liveable city in Asia" by the Asian Econmic Review magazine. Again I`ll try try to find some photos that show-off Fukuoka`s beauty when I finally get a PC [soon] ;) . Cheers.

You'd be surprised. I know quite a few people who came here for University from other countries. I like, you, did not know Canada had a good education system(I still have my doubts too), but I never had anything to compare it to either.

EDIT: I should clarify, its UofT in particular that is more difficult. I'm not sure it it applies to all Universities in Canada.

I don't really like U of T's style of teaching. But I would agree that U of T is one of the toughest universities over here. But imo Middle school and elementary was a joke, especially for someone that came from Hong Kong. ;)

Yeah my cousin who came to Canada a few years back to start school from grade 9, was getting +90 in all her grades except english. I think Asian countries tend to be more advanced when it comes to math and science in particular. My uncle actually sent another cousin of mine to India to study for two years, so that she would have an edge over kids in Canada by the time she gets back to finish Highschool. As for UofT, the teaching portion, I love. I enjoy my program and my courses, and I feel I am getting my money's worth(which is another issue in and of itself...tuition is getting to be ridiculous). Its just the people are such snobs. Some people think they are better than you, for no reason, which makes no sense considering we're going to the same school. I can only imagine how the people at Queens are. I've heard everyone has a holier than thou attitude there. But UofT is ranked the highest of all Canadian universities. I think we're somewhere in between 25-28 out of 500 in the world.

I am in UofT, ie University of Torture.

Ha, I'm at UofT as well, which college/program are you in?

Undergrad/postgraduate? I agree with you about the torture bit... I started off taking a Specialist in Math  , didn't last too long (tried to stick it out for 2 years though).

I don't really like U of T's style of teaching. But I would agree that U of T is one of the toughest universities over here. But imo Middle school and elementary was a joke, especially for someone that came from Hong Kong.

The style of teaching depends a lot on which program you're in and how large your classes are. There's a HUGE teaching difference between Psych 100 (800+ students in one lecture session, 2000+ enrolled in total) and say, Math 257 (30 students maybe?).

Sorry to everyone else for hijacking this thread! :o

Wilhelmstein is a little man-made Island. It was build 1771-1777 by Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe. The island was built using 3000 tree logs, which were rammed into the ground and built up with rocks and stones. Construction of the island ended in 1756 A.D. and the castle was built subsequently. An area of 1.5 hectare was created in this way, which was flanked by 16 smaller islands. Today, all the islands have been joined into one, and a museum as well as a restaurant invite for a visit to the island.

Well, thanks, I was actually born in MB so maybe thats why Im not all that excited :-)
There are some historical buildings that are maybe nice to see if youre tourists but if you live in MB it feels different. But on the other hand I believe there are worse places to live all over the word:-)
And no, we dont have snow right now but I believe theres some in the mountains that are like an hour driving from MB.

Hay there Luis,

I kinda know where Inwood Heights is but I am not too familiar.

I think the pre-sale for USO tickets go on sale for USTA members sometime in April. But I never buy tickets early. I usually buy them during the qualies, since I only get grounds passes & will buy a stadium ticket for the days Fed plays. Do you go to the qualies? Its the greatest time at the USO , since the crowds don't usually arrive till Sat (kids day  ) . I love it. I have been going to the USO since 1999 & have watched Roger win all 4 USO titles. It was heaven.

When it rolls around, we should exchange info & try to meet. Would love to enjoy some tennis with a fellow Federer Fan. :)

YEP! The Savoie-area of course. It's GREAT. Oh, I'm going here: http://www.espacekilly.com/
Been there a couple of times before, they have this fantastic black piste called 'Le Mur' - the Wall, that is. And that's exactly how it looks like.

By the way I've also heard very good things about the University in your town.

Oh, that's very nice to hear! Yes, Utrecht University is one of the oldest, and most acknowledged universities of my country, along with Leiden and Amsterdam - especially in *all* the Natural Sciences (including Medicine) & its Law School is very good, too. Not to forget, the only Veterinary Faculty in The Netherlands is in Utrecht too. Pretty nice student societies here as well I might add! :D

I definitely would love to visit the Netherlands, especially Harleem. How far is your city from Harleem?

Ah, you mean Haarlem!, I guess? ;) (this one here: http://www.haarlem.nl/smartsite9.htm)
Well, that's a lovely town indeed, and very close to the beach (we have beautiful beaches here, but alas - the weather isn't actually like Mallorca, so you have to be lucky to fully enjoy them...). You can reach Haarlem from Utrecht in about one hour by train, it's a pretty good connection.

A good friend of mine lives in Washington Heights, I was there for a month 2 years back. I loved being there, a lot of South Americans there :)

Yes there are lots of spanish speaking folks in Washington heights, I am not sure the great majority are south americans but rather, caribbean (mainly Cuban and Dominican) Mexicans and some central americans.

By the way P.Antonius where in Switzerland do you live, I suppose you are German speaking. My father was born in Schweiz, my granny, muti Ercile lives in Lucerne.

Don't you also have some videos on youtube?

I'm a very experienced skier, I've been doing it for over 35 years, and even gave lessons for quite some time...

Really? That's very cool. I'm terrible at downhill skiing. The only time I've tried it I spent more time on the snow then I did upright.

I love cross country though, you can go at your own pace, and there's nothing like a clear winter morning when the trees look like crystal and they glow in the sun.

Hi Luis,

I live between Geneva and Lausanne, so I am a French speaking guy. Lucerne is maybe the most beautiful town of Switzerland, your granny is lucky to live there ;)

What videos are you referring to? About Switzerland? I got some videos on dailymotion I did for some folks here, where I have fun singing some songs... Nothing to do with Switzerland though... :D

Hey P. Antonius,

Thanks for your reply, it was very nice of you. Chien, vous parlez francais, magnifique. Moi aussi mais pas comme vous evidentement. :tape:

The funny thing, is that I've actually been to Geneva, well I made a connection there and was there for three hours, we saw a little of the main town while we had to catch our next plane to paris. I've never been to Lucerne yet, unfortunately. Whenever my dad visits I wasn't able to, I was either in school or couldn't go.

By the way do you know what's the brand of chocolates Swiss Air gives out, I purchased them but forgot the name and the brand, I did keep a little wrapper but I lost it as well. I know it is not Lindt, is is sprungli by any chance?

Yes Lucerne is amazing, it is gorgeous, at least from the videos and pictures I've seen whenever my dad takes pictures. Even worse yet, is that my German sucks, it is very limited and my granny only speaks German, well she remembers a little spanish so she'l speak to me in her little spanish. That's our only means of communication. :o

So have you had the was it called, that beef patty thing, that's famous in Cornwall, it's very fattening but looks very tasty and good. By the way Cornwall wine and champagne seems to be very high quality. :wavey:

Hi Luis,

I haven't flown with Swiss Air in ages so I don't recall what kind of chocolates they give out... I thought it was Lindt (Lindt owns Sprüngli btw)...

So then it could be Lindt. However it had a very different name they were sold seperately, hmmm, they also had Lindt. It was sold at customs.

Merci beaucoup Jean. :wavey:

 Yeah, that's the nasty thing about skiing, most people start with a few weeks on their bums in stead of being able to keep themselves upright on those things!
Same counts for me on a snowboard - I've tried it a few times, but on every occasion I felt like I had an ironing plank tied to my feet (:help:), and well... let's just say that after a few weeks trying, getting all bruised and wet, I just decided to give up. The worst thing about those things is having to get on and off on a skiing lift... terrible! :tape:

I love cross country though, you can go at your own pace, and there's nothing like a clear winter morning when the trees look like crystal and they glow in the sun.

I do that as well, and indeed, it's lovely, especially if you like to enjoy the nature surrounding you!

Lots of nature here, not so much in the way of cities. Utrecht looks very nice. I've always wanted to travel to Europe, mostly England and Germany as that is where my family is from. I have a few Dutch friends (my boss is from there), and he says I'd love the Netherlands.

Snowboards, I really don't get the attraction. Skis I find easier to control but I guess I'm old fashioned that way.

Are you thinking about the Pasty?

Yes, in my life here I must have had 100's  The traditional one is a steak pasty, with beef and vegetables in it all in a pastry :lick: They are very yummy.:devil:

Wow, folks, youre sending such gorgeous pics, Im so excited! id love to see all the places on my own. I understand we are sending the greatest samples we have to show our hometowns, anyone cares to see the most horrible ones? This evening I was walking my dog and saw that someone (probably some worker from a pub nearby) threw away some dozens of those little glass bottles you cant buy in a store and put them right under this tree thats growing on the place I use to walk my dog. Im really angry and I dont get why people do that if they have a garbage can like 10 steps from the place. I know its just not a Czech thing but could this ever happen in Switzerland? To me its the greatest country to live in, although its just from friends or TV coz Ive never been there. I know it probably doesnt belong here but I could help ask! What is your experience?
