There's an article about his clothing endorsement contract in the 2005 Articles thread here. The short answer is that his Nike contract is over, and he hasn't decided on a new sponsor yet.

Yonex would be a nice choice, given its prominence in the Asian markets. I don't know too much about its clothes lines, though.

yonex is the one that nalbandian and joachim johansson (who used to be jaslyn hewitt´s boyfriend, and i dont know if still is) are using.

Thanks for the info. Nothing special about Yonex.

Back in the 80s, Ellesse was my favorite clothing sponsor, but I think they went out of business.

My first thaught, when I read he wasn't going to wear Nike anymore, was also FILA - and seeing him & Kim making commercials together .
Not only because Kim is also wearing it, but according to my humble opinion, I like their clothes more then the Reebok ones. And I've never heard of that other one (sorry!!).

Yes. Is it spelled with one "n" or two? I'm hoping that, whichever sponsor he chooses, they create a line branded for him. That's the advantage of being the biggest fish in the pond, which is not the case with Nike, which hasn't even branded a line for Federer, although the clamdiggers are functioning that way for Nadal.

Agassi left NIKE because NIKE refused to donate millions of dollars to his foundation in addition to the millions they were going to pay him as an endorsee....that was the deal breaker and Adidas was more than happy to give him millions PLUS more millions to his foundation - has nothing to do with NIKE product...PERIOD.

Hewitt left NIKE (not vice-versa) because he did not want to endorse the same brand as Federer...PERIOD -again has nothing to do with NIKE product.

Speaking of which, anyone hear the latest on who Lleyton Hewitt is going to sign with? I have not heard anything concrete although rumours are flying like wild fire.

My sources say the top four front runners are (and not in this order):

Reebok

Fila

Under Armor ( highly doubtful since they are not big enough to afford to pay Hewitt big bucks)

Yonex

If anyone knows anything that has materialized , please post it here.

When I get confirmed facts, I will post immediately.

Caio for now.

SAGroove, I think that when 3 top players who all wear Nike shoes experience foot/toe problems within a short period of time, it's reasonable to wonder whether their Nike shoes are the cause of the problem. I don't doubt that there were other issues involved in Lleyton and Andre not wishing to renew their contracts (such as Andre's wish to get corporate support for his charitable foundation or Lleyton's desire to differentiate himself from Federer's sponsor), but I have to think that problematic shoes might be part of the issue, too. A player's career can really be hurt by problem shoes. Remember Hingis's problems with Sergio Tacchini?

Thanks for the update as to the sponsors that Lleyton is considering. I never heard of Under Armor. Are they an Aussie company? I wouldn't be surprised if Lleyton, a true blue patriot, wants to endorse a home-grown company.

I had wondered if the shoes were the cause of the injury. I don't like nike tennis shoes, they are not great. Nike running shoes are ok though.

You think Federer with Nike is the reason Lleyton wanted out? I figured it probably had to do with the $$ and the foot injury.

Just don't go with Reebok! Can you imagine Lleyton in some butt ugly Reebok shirt like Andy had to wear at last year's USO? Or that trucker hat. Yuck! No offense to Andy fans, it wasn't him, it was Reebok with no style. No offense to Reebok fans either...

What I find interesting is that Nike, the biggest US sports apparel company, now has as its two most highly ranked sponsored male players two Europeans (Federer and Nadal), while the two highest ranked American men (Roddick and Agassi) are sponsored by two European companies (Lacoste and adidas). I don't think this means anything, but it is interesting, or perhaps ironic is the better word.

I always thought that Reebok looked bad on Andy because the shirts never seemed to fit him properly, and he doesn't like to change his shirts when they get soaking wet. Lleyton will be Reebok's most prominent male player, so perhaps he'll have veto power over what he wears (I hope), if he goes with them, or maybe get a branded line.

Anyway, I'm sure now that Lleyton is back from the honeymoon he'll be able to concentrate on getting a new clothing sponsor.

Adidas did not pay 13.8 Billion dollars for Reebok just to kill the brand. Remember, NIKE owns Cole Haan, Bauer Skates, etc. This is simply an acquisition for Adidas plain and simple.

As far as Lleyton Hewitt, I have not heard anything concrete either - however my sources tell me Reebok, Fila, and Yonex (head to toe) are the leading candidates but the reality of it all is that Lleyton Hewitt will go with the most lucritave contract offer made.

Sagroove, the difference between Reebok and Cole-Haan & Bauer Skates is that the Reebok and Nike athletic clothing lines directly compete with each other. That isn't true for Nike and the other brands it owns, since those are skates and dress shoes. I'm not saying that Nike will kill off the Reebok name, but they eventually they will want to differentiate them, to avoid competing against themselves.

Trust me Socket, the brand name of Reebok is not going anywhere. Please do not think becasue RBK tennis division in in the doldrums that Adidas will kill the brand... RBK has huge marketshare worldwide and THAT is why Adidas bought them. Reebok will continue to exist just like it has continuing footwear innovation like "Pump" and "Insta-Pump" technologies. This acquisition was simply a business decision by Adidas to own another sporting goods giant. The "Reebok customer" and the "Adidas customer" are two totally different markets and Adidas knows all about market segmentation and realized that Reebok was ripe for a buyout and took advantage. Now Adidas will profit from both segments of the market and use Reebok distribution channels to gain more presence in the global sportswear & footwear market.

In reality, this was another step for Adidas to grow beyond NIKE in the sporting goods industry.

Lleyton kept in check by old mate
By LEO SCHLINK
18aug05

DENIED as a youngster as he clamoured for the most famous chequered headband in tennis, Lleyton Hewitt finally has a piece of Pat Cash - 17 years on.

Hewitt yesterday donned one of fellow Wimbledon winner Cash's trademark black-and-white headbands after telephoning the 1987 All-England Club champion to put in a request for the gear.
Explaining to Cash he could never lay his hands on one of the Victorian's sweat-laden discards at the Australian Open, Hewitt politely asked the former world No. 4 if he still had any supplies. Cash, now 40, was more than happy to oblige. Hewitt's father Glynn last night confirmed his world No. 3 son used to idolise Cash.

"We used to go to the Australian Open when Lleyton and Jaslyn were small and Lleyton would hang over the rail after 'Cashy's' matches and try to get a headband," Hewitt said.

"Cashy used to throw his headbands into the crowd but Lleyton could never get one. He'd get pushed out of the way. He rang Pat a little while ago and Cashy had some headbands sent to Lleyton."

Hewitt has been wearing unbranded gear since his departure from Nike. Hewitt senior said the headband had a practical application because his son wanted protection from the fierce north American sun without having to wear a hat with a sponsor's logo.

It is understood Hewitt will next week switch to Yonex. He has a long relationship with the Japanese racquet manufacturer, which is now poised to provide shoes and clothing to the Australian.

Hewitt yesterday accelerated his push towards a second US Open title with a straight-sets victory over talented Russian Igor Andreev in the Cincinnati Masters.

The world No. 4 showed he was over the stomach illness that forced him to forfeit the opening match of his hardcourt campaign in Montreal last week as he accounted for Russian Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-4.

"I didn't eat for four or five days," Hewitt said. "So it hit me pretty bad. I felt a little bit awkward the last few days just training, getting back into the routine of things. I'm definitely a lot better than a week ago."

The Masters is Hewitt's only scheduled event before tackling the US Open in 12 days in New York.

Hewitt cashes in on new-look headgear

18aug05

LLEYTON Hewitt rang childhood hero Pat Cash to gain his blessing to resurrect the Wimbledon champion's trademark headband while he is in between clothing sponsors in the lead-up to the US Open.

The world No3 has been wearing no branding for the past two weeks, apart from one very striking addition -- the black-and-white chequered headband -- over his newly shorn locks.

The 24-year-old Hewitt jettisoned his trademark back-to-front Nike cap after ending an eight-year relationship with the US sportswear giant.

Hewitt's manager, Rob Aivatoglou, said yesterday Hewitt would be announcing a new "head-to-toe" apparel deal at the US Open, which starts on Monday week in New York.

On Tuesday night, Hewitt donned the famous Cash headgear to win through to the second round of the $3 million Cincinnati Masters.

"I was very surprised when he asked," Cash said. "I'll have to wear my cap backwards now."

Cash paid to have the headbands made during his career, which included winning Wimbledon in 1987 when Hewitt was just six years old.

He said he designed them as a tribute to his favourite rock band, Cheap Trick, whose guitarist Rick Nielsen had a chequered guitar.

Aivatoglou said Hewitt's new clothing deal did not involve a headband. "It's just a mark of respect he wanted to pay to one of his tennis idols," he said.

Of course their designs would not be as good as Nike and Adidas. They're primarily an equipment firm, not a clothing one.

Compared to Wilson's clothes, Yonex is doing fine.
