Look where we are now!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Just do your best boys!!!!!!!!! I am sure this is manageable, we've been in worse situations and got out of them. DC 2002 final ring a bell??? LOL

Davydenko poses Croatia threat

Croatia stand tantalisingly close to their first Davis Cup final this week, hosting a Russia team weakened by the absence of Marat Safin. Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic will be favourites to steer Croatia into the but in Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny Russia still present a formidable hurdle.

World number seven Davydenko has never lost a Tour match to either Ancic or Ljubicic, while Youzhny became a national hero in 2002 when he clawed back a two-set deficit against Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu to land Russia a first title.

Russia's Shamil Tarpischev also has the incentive of becoming the first captain to land the Fed Cup and Davis Cup in the same year following the women's triumph over France last week.

Local boy Ancic, however, says form and statistics will count for nothing when the tie gets under way on Friday.

"I am very well prepared, I'm in good physical shape," Ancic told reporters in the Gripe Sports Hall, just a short stroll from the family home. "There will be a great atmosphere, it will be a great feeling and we don't want to waste it."

Ljubicic, the team's most experienced player, added: "All the singles will be very close. Davydenko is a dangerous player but the surface is not his best, it will suit Youzhny more. Whatever, the tie won't be decided before Sunday."

The 21-year-old Ancic, who was nurtured as a junior by Croatian sporting icon and fellow Split resident, former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, is under pressure after defeats by Andy Roddick and Andrei Pavel in the Davis Cup victories over the U.S. and Romania this year.

"I lost the opening singles here against Romania in five sets, but I will try to use that experience to my benefit," said Ancic, who partnered Ljubicic to crucial doubles victories in both matches. "I just hope I get the win on Friday."

French Open semi-finalist Davydenko stirred things up when he said Croatia could benefit from home-based line judges.

"(Croatia's) main advantage will be the line officials," Davydenko told reporters, referring to a defeat by Ancic in a lower-tier tournament in Zagreb several years ago when he believed he "was robbed" by poor line calls.

BIG FACTORS

"The other big factors for them will be the home crowd and the fast surface."

Pilic is unlikely to call upon the giant serving Ivo Karlovic, unless either Ancic or Ljubicic suffer an injury or fatigue, although he playfully offered his thoughts on Russia's options.

"They are definitely weaker without Safin," he said, "and I don't expect Youzhny to play all three matches because he has trouble with his knee. I'm not sure he'll play the doubles."

Youzhny, who laughed off suggestions he had a bad knee, is a regular doubles player for Russia, usually with Safin. Tarpischev is likely to partner him with Igor Andreev on Saturday, although he knows if Russia are to win, they will probably have to capture three of the four singles rubbers.

"It will be hard without Safin but we will deal with what we have," he said. "Little things will prove decisive."

from KC's official press release

The second round also brought the first major sensation of the men's tournament as defending champion Nikolai Davydenko lost to the underdog Daniele Bracciali 6/3, 4/6, 4/6. "My shoulder was aching in the second set, so I had to slow down which played in to the hands of my opponent", Nikolai said. Mikhail Youzhny won his match against the Czech Lukas Dlouhy 6/4, 6/3. The champion of Russia Igor Kunitsyn outplayed the experienced French Fabrice Santoro - 6/4, 6/4. The 20-year old Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili lost to the big server from Belarus Max Mirny 6/4, 3/6, 1/6.

alelysafina
10-20-2005, 09:17 AM
Kolya and Ginepri have met once on hard court with Kolya winning. Im not sure how many more points he needs... Annie?

{Annie}
10-20-2005, 09:26 AM
  From what I gather it's not so much a matter of points right now, it's more a question of doing much better than his rivals, Coria in the first place...

He needs to do well in every tournament he enters, especially better than Coria, who is stepping on his toes...I pray this hapennes because God knows noone deserves to go to Shanghai this year more than Kolya..tremendous progress

I am very worried for today's match though, Robby is in a hell of a shape right now and Kolya is a little tired and little injuries here and there have been bugging him. But as we say in Russia Nadezhda umiraet posledney - Hope dies last ;)

UDACHI KOLENKA!!!!!!!!!!

He plays after Nalbandia-Johannson on Madrid Arena today

alelysafina
10-20-2005, 10:17 AM
I think Nikolay will get a spot regardless because of Marat. I hate to say this, but I dont think he's goign to be able to compete in Shanghi. And that leaves another spot open, for Kolya.

I still want him to do well, and that win over Karol was a real confidence booster seeing as how he has lost to him on hard court before.

Kolya has had a nice long week of rest with some doubles, and I think that he can go far in this tourney :)

and to reiterate, Kolya has a winning record against robby ... It was even in the US and on a hard court! Granted it was two years ago, but still... He's better than he was two years ago, plus robby had to go to three sets against Seb and Nikolay has a winning record against seb (2-0) from this year!

linus
10-21-2005, 04:09 AM
i could accept kolya's lost, one for his play in Kremlin, the other for Robby's aggressive style

for these tournaments, i felt his serve with a bit weakness which made me some nervous, but it is not kolya's fault :aplot:

as for his match vs robby, our sport tv showed its relive early this morning, i overtook my sleep feeling to watch it wholly, i wanted to find out what was the matter with kolya, omg, he looks so slim accomparing to robby :( and his movements not strong enough to face a tough match, in my eyes, kolya not in his best shape but it is acceptable

now i just wish kolya back better in St.Petersburg

Easy easy win for Kolya. The difference in class was too obvious

So I watched the whole match and even though Dlouhy is not the opponent good players can fully open up and show what they've got with, I made some very optimistic observations yesterday for those who're interested.

1. Kolya got some rest and it shows. He is fresh and THANK GOD FOR THAT! Because at a certain point I thought that was it for this year..no gas left

2. He is very physically fit and that makes me extremely happy. Dlouhy obviously not being able to put up a fight at the backline tried to wear Kolya out with drop shots at the net but Kolya ran like the wind and saved almost all of them. That is one great sign.

3. The wrist seems to be OK, some troubles with the serve but nothing mega. :D

One important thing is that it really looks like he is back Please God don't let me be wrong... :worship:

The commentator yesterday was blabbing away about ATOP stats for this season and you know what??? Kolya is third on the ATP Tour with his first serve percentage  Nadal is first and Hanescu is second..then Kolya is 3d....cool

Udachi Kolya today!!!!!!!!!!! He plays Goldstein from USA last on Centre Court today after Misha's match

DAVAY KOLYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Pic from yesterday...I actually really liked his new Prince uniform :D

Davydenko led 5-0 in the first set but closed it out only after Goldstein won three straight games. The American then won the first three games of the second set before Davydenko's five-game run took the match.

``In the beginning, I concentrated,'' Davydenko said. ``My play was steady and then some problems appeared -- fatigue in the shoulder and right hand. I had to change tactics and choose another rhythm.''

I know tosee, I am very worried, too. However apparently Eurosport said that all Greg's ues are Kolya's doing. He kept changing the pace of the game and Rucedki couldn't hold up to it. Kolya's first serve percentage was 80!!!!!!!! so that's good, too. I am not getting overexcited or anything...there's still a long way to go until perfect shape but this should be a good confidence booster I hope ;)

I particularly liked this Eurosport comment :)

Davydenko shows Rusedski and the 14,000 spectators in the Palais Omnisports exactly why he is on the verge of qualifying for the Masters Cup. An excellent service demonstration from the 24-year-old mixing up pace and direction in a hold to 15 to confirm the break for 2-0.
