Im not sure about the surface yet. its probly going to be Carpet. Cuz Ivan is just ridicouls good on it. as he showed this week. but i think grass might be a better fit for Ancic.

Ivan will be amazing again. he's won he's last 8 DC matchs.

Croatia 3-1. Ivan goes 3-0 again, as Ancic losses 3rd staright singles match in DC

Sure. Carpet. Against the best indoors player of the decade. I hope it's carpet. Kremlin Cup surface..

Unless Russia adds Safin and Joachim Johansson to their roster, I don't like their chances.

Carpet against Safin is as dumb as the US decision to play Ivan on hardcourt! I mean last year in the indoor season Ivan was on fire until he met Safin who schooled him on playing on carpet! I mean Safin loves the purity that carpet has with the elements being blocked out!! I'm calling Russia on this!!

I am though not quite clear, with what they understand as "carpet" in Croatia. The last tie against Romania was told to have place on carpet, and at the same time they say "Greenset". Greenset is hardcourts. Acrylic-based, but still technically a hardcourt.

call me Crazy..but they will put this on Grass

Sure not. But that will indeed be crazy. I sure hope they will do that. Because by that they will neutralize not Safin - who proved that he can play on grass, not Youznyi whose record on grass is not bad. That will neutralize the one who is the only one of all involved who is absolutely pitiful on grass - and that's Ljubicic - the man who singlehandedly won two ties for Croatia. I sure pray they do that..:)

Ancic would win both on grass. and they can win doubles..

on indoor...they would win doubles and Ivan and Mario would beat Davy. and Ivan vs Safin would be a coin flip

El Legenda

and now we know where it will be played SAME PLACE AS vs Rom

Ancic is naturally keen to play the Russians in Split: "The atmosphere was great, everything was great, so Split deserves one more.”

Pilic agrees: Split is our choice, it was great. Surface? The same. Same surface,

I don't think we'll use Marat - injury is rather serious, even if he recovers he won't have enough time for practice.
Youzhny and Davydenko can do well on croatian carpet, but Kolya has some problems now. Misha is not stable, but I have sense he will have good autumn this year.
Tursunov said he is not going to play for Russia...

H2H between Safin and Ljubicic:
2004 Paris AMS, Carpet, R32
France Carpet R32 Safin 6 7 6 3 7 5
2001 Lyon, Carpet, S
France Carpet S Ljubicic 7 6 6 7 6 7
2001 US Open, Hard, R64
NY, U.S.A. Hard R64 Safin 7 6 6 7 7 6 7 6
2000 Sydney, Hard, R32
Australia Hard R32 Ljubicic 7 6 3 6 3 6

Far too many tB  but notice in the big matches ie TMS and Grand Slam Safin comes out on top.
this is what the tie will be about:
Dvorana SC Gripe, Split, Croatia
Stadium Capacity: 5100
23 September - 25 September 2005
Surface: Carpet (Greenset) - Indoors
Ball Type: Pro Penn ATP

for safin his davis cup appearances are as follows:
Total Clay Carpet Grass Hard Unknown Indoor Outdoor
Won 23 11 9 0 3 0 20 3
Lost 14 4 3 2 5 0 7 7
Carpet is 9-3 indoor is 20-7

for ljubicic it is:
Total Clay Carpet Grass Hard Unknown Indoor Outdoor
Won 26 8 15 0 3 0 16 10
Lost 14 7 4 0 3 0 5 9
Carpet is 15-4 and indoor is 16-5
Marats % for carpet is 75% and for indoor is 74%
Ivan for carpet is 79% and for indoor is 76%.
I think this match will be very tight.

Nimomunz
08-11-2005, 04:05 PM
Davydenko:
Total Clay Carpet Grass Hard Unknown Indoor Outdoor
Won 5 4 1 0 0 0 5 0
Lost 3 3 0 0 0 0 1 2
Carpet is 1-0 and indoor is 5-1

Ancic:
Total Clay Carpet Grass Hard Unknown Indoor Outdoor
Won 10 0 9 0 1 0 8 2
Lost 9 4 4 0 1 0 6 3
Carpet is 9-4 and Indoor is 8-6

% for Daydenko is carpet:100% and indoor 83%
% for Ancic is carpet 69% and indoor 57%.
i think Ancic will lose both his matches and so all safin and davydenko will need to do is beat Ivan once or in the doubles and they are good to go!!

p.s. im assuming that davydenkos good form this year will guarantee him the place. marat will be fine come Davis Cup time so he is def in.

Go Russia! They have to win and they will win! Russia is not USA and neither Romania! Russia means Marat Safin who really wants to make up for missing the tie against France, Davydenko, Youzny, Andreev! Well that's a strong team! Go Russia! I really want them to win because of the Croats Russia didn't come to Romania! So...lots of luck!

Oh damn, without Safin this is an uphill battle for Russia. Crucial that they beat Ancic both times and win the doubles, for I fear Ljubicic will be 2-0 in singles again.

Davydenko and Youzhny will definitely be singles, unlike Nikolay is injured. Even though Andreev was used last time, he would be the wrong choice on carpet.

It's rather surprising that Tursunov is in team, I see 2 reasons:
- Tarpischev persuaded him to play doubles with Misha;
- there is no Safin, and Tursunov has some problems with him, I suppose...

I still think Russia has chances 60/40 in this match - Mishgun is in good form and can win at least 1 match, Kolyan is a fighter and can win both single matches...

Nervous, very nervous BUT

1. Mario is in crappy shape lately and that should do us some good.
2. Kolya is injured but he was injured in July, too and performed a miracle, so I am hoping for one now, too
3. Misha and Tursunov were runners-up in China Open doubles tournament..now that's not such a bad sign either.

Croatia will win this, with unbeatable Ivan, and Mario playing home.

Also, if match in pairs willl bring desion about winners, Russia dosen´t have a chance, Ivan and Mario are really good pair in Davis Cup.
