hello here! well, i know Rafa is going to play on Thursday.
here some news:

7/16/05 -- This weekend, the best Majorcan footballer ever (and Rafa's uncle), Miguel Àngel Nadal, is being paid homage to by his former teammates.

The major event occurred on Saturday, when the Son Severa municipal stadium was inaugurated with a football match between the so-called Barcelona "Dream Team," and a combination of ex-players from the Spanish national team, Mallorca and Manacor. Rafa, who wore the No. 9 shirt of the Spanish national squad took the kick off for the second half. He played the full 35 minutes and was fairly active on the left wing (he's a leftie at football too), holding his own among the pros. The team coaches entertained the crowd by encouraging Rafa with advice like: "Don't put so much 'top spin' on it!", "Use your favourite 'passing shot'!" and "Who said you couldn't play on grass?"

The Dream Team scored one goal, but Rafa leveled the score three minutes later when he rocketed the ball into the back of the net with his left foot. "Always has to shine," joked Uncle Miguel Angel. The event, which was played for charity, fittingly ended with a 1-1 tie. (Thanks to nou.amic for the information.)

The last of the celebrations will be on Sunday, with a golf tournament at Pula Golf. Shortly thereafter, Rafa will head to Stuttgart for the Mercedes Cup. Rafa has a bye in the first round, and could meet Gustavo Kuerten in the second round on Wednesday. He will play his first-round doubles match (with Fernando Verdasco) on Tuesday, on Center Court.

thanks vr.com

nadalita

Is that because this will be his 9th title of his career when he wins Stuttgart? Or is there some other reasoning behind him liking No 9? Cloud 9, perhaps?

I was at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open (at same site as Cincy Masters) yesterday and they had the Mercedes cars there but not the model Rafa will win :(

 Richie loses his DC match today and we're poking fun of him for not having a driver's license. Still funny though. :o

This doesn't have much to do with tennis, but this was posted on the official Stuttgart Mercedes Cup site:

Radiant Eyes – Nadal, Beck & Co. in the Queen Olga Children’s Hospital, Stuttgart

- Literally thousands of children have been cheering on the clay tennis specialists at Stuttgart’s 27 th MercedesCup during the last few days. But it has also become almost a tradition for the professional players to think about the children not able to go to Weissenhof as they are lying in hospital at the moment.

- Three of the up-and-coming players, Andy Beck, Aljoscha Thron and Sebastian Rieschick offered to go and spend a few hours in “Olgäle”, as the Stuttgart’s children’s clinic is affectionately called, to cheer the children up by talking to them, bringing them presents and autographs. But when the MercedesCup delegation turned up in hospital on Wednesday morning, the president of the Queen Olga Foundation for Ill Children, Dr. Stefanie Schuster, was also able to greet one of the top world stars.
When the tournament organisers asked clay king Rafael Nadal for a few autographs on T-shirts, caps or rucksacks, he announced spontaneously, “I’ll come too.” The French Open champion said he has already visited children’s hospitals in Madrid and Barcelona and really enjoys taking part in such visits. And this is how the children in the rheumatologic and orthopädic wards in the hospital were able to receive their presents in person from a genuine winner of a Grand Slam. But local hero Beck and the young stars Thron and Rieschick also really enjoyed the visit and signed a great number of autographs.

so thats why i think Rafa is born to be a good person :worship:

Nadal streaks on, bests Gaudio in Mercedes final
July 24, 2005
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

STUTTGART, Germany -- Top-seeded Rafael Nadal ran his winning streak on clay to 34 matches Sunday, beating Gaston Gaudio 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to claim the Mercedes Cup title.

Nadal's eighth title this year -- tying ATP leader Roger Federer -- came against last year's French Open champion, whose record on clay is next best to the Spanish teenager's 48-2 mark.

"I won in three sets, but the match was very close," Nadal said. "He's one of the best players on clay in the world."

The French Open champion picked up his 10th career title in 11 finals and kept alive a clay-court winning streak dating to April -- the sixth longest in history.

Nadal needed 2 hours, 41 minutes to beat the Argentine, who came into the match with a 37-7 record on clay and four titles. Gaudio had also won three of their four previous meetings.

"There's no doubt I played a great champion -- he was just too good," Gaudio. "No one on the tour can find a way to beat him."

The Spaniard had his serve broken twice, but he immediately broke back both times in a match full of drop shots, lobs and fierce rallies that had the 5,500 spectators cheering.

"Mentally, Nadal is one of the best on the tour," Gaudio said.

Nadal will pass Lleyton Hewitt for the No. 2 world ranking on Monday, and he also sealed his berth in the year-ending Tennis Masters in Shanghai. At 19, he is the youngest to qualify for the tour championships since Andrei Medvedev in 1993.

Nadal earned $82,000 for his sixth straight title on clay. He also won a Mercedes Benz sports car, but the teenager will have to first gain his driver's license.

He drew a standing ovation from the fans at the end of the match, and an even bigger cheer when he finally got the Mercedes to roll across the court.

The teenager didn't know how to start the ignition. :haha:

"I've never done this before," Nadal said.

Nadal will play another clay-court event in Umag, Croatia, next week before heading to the United States for the hard-court season.

He could pass Ilie Nastase's clay-court streak of 36 and Thomas Muster's 38 at the event -- leaving him fourth on the all-time list. Guillermo Vilas owns the record of 53 straight wins in 1977.

Sorry for digging this thread out again, but I just recently joined and spent some time with catching up ...

Anyway, I was in Stuttgart on Wednesday, July 20, when Rafa played vs Hugo Armando. I had a blast, aside from the fact that there was absolute insanity whenever Rafa showed up. However, thanks to a nice camera and halfwhat good skills, I snapped around 80 pics of the boy. :D Those who hang out at vamosrafael.com may know them already (I post as Kiwi there), but here they are .... happy clicking!
