Beat his record qualifying date last year!!!!

Shanghai - Roger Federer has booked the first qualifying spot in the eight-man field for November's Masters Cup in Shanghai, the ATP announced on Wednesday.

The flawless Swiss, who lifted his third Wimbledon title at the weekend, will return to China's commercial capital after playing the event when it was held there in 2002.

Federer's qualification is the earliest in the history of the elite season-ending competition, to be played November 13-20.

Last summer, Federer set the previous early mark for qualifying when he made the field on August 3 based on points earned during the calendar year race.

So, techinically, he can get away with not playing a single tournament between now and the end of the year and just show up for the Cup in November, right?

That's pretty impressive .

Some numbers (I like stats!) to prove just how great this season from Roger is!

Rogi currently has 910 Champions Race points, which is considerably more than Roger's poin total at this point last year, when he had 746.
Roger's 910 points is more than the year-end total of Andy Roddick in 2003, when he ended with 907 points.

Roger has already won 8 tournaments this year. Apart from Roger's 11 victories last year, the last time a player won 8 or more tournaments was Pete Sampras in 1996. He won 8 tourneys in that year.

In 1995 Thomas Muster won no less than 12 tournaments, which is within grasp of Rogi this year.

Well done, Rogi. Congrats!
He just deserves it. He's been performing so well most of the year, and even with shaky performances here and there, he's being able to win which just see his willingness to go further in every tournament and how good he is to win without playing his best.

Thanks mitalidas for the news and Purple for the stats - they're truly impressive. I hope Roger plays the rest of the year (a well planned schedule, as so far it has been) and can win a few more titles. I know Vilas' 17 are quite impossible, especially with Roger's limited schedule, but I can see him beating his personal record of last year (11). Go, Ninja!

Good news for the fans in China, they can start to book their tickets since Rogi's gonna be there.

Who would believe he would not be qualifying for it even at the very beginning of this year though ;) :wavey:
