I saw this posted by a fan on Roger's site. I hope it turns out to be true!

He will open Nasdaq on August 25th

The New York Times and the New Yorker will do feature stories on him.

He will throw the first pitch at the Yankees game on august 25th

He will also do David Letterman that day

distraction I agree but it's part of being a champion as well as a smart person, always taking time for the public;) I think it's good for fans and tennis in the US, players from other countries going in shows and stuff there, it'll help promote tennis more

Anything he can do to be come more well known in the USA is fine by me. Unfortunately tennis is not a top sport here so his great play alone isn't going to make him well known. During Wimbledon he took time out to attend Elton John's fancy AIDS benefit ball. Didn't hurt his performance there.

sounds good to me. this will not take so much of his time in NY and it's good to boost his image in the States.

Go, Roger. show them you can pitch a baseball too! :bounce:

Last year, right after US Open was concluded with Roger's victory, a Swiss TV was on the streets of New York, asking normal people if they know Roger Federer. Many of the asked people answered "no." you are right, mirkaland. It is true that his excellence on tennis court alnoe doesn't make him famous in the States, considering that tennis is less popular than the other ball sports there.

Well, it is good that people get to know about him, but the priority is that he is a professional tennis player, I want it to be that way rather than having other schedules. Being known isn't important for Roger himself. But I bet Roger knows what he is doing and won't do whatever that could affect his game negatively.

I was just watching the Nasdaq last week and I thought, how come Rogi doesn't open the session??? Hmm... interesting!

I also thought that Rogi s do some bp in TO next yr w the Blue Jays but I see he'll do it w the Yanks in NYC!

COOL! AND finally he'll do the Letterman show!!! WOW!!!

So that's when his article will finally show up in the NYorker mag???

Don't forget Rogi will be in the Men's Vogue too -- I think it's a new mag to start Sep. [a quarterly one]!!!

Cool, I'd love to get to see Rogi on Letterman :D (gives me a reason to watch it now :o ). I'm sure he knows how to pace himself, if any of these things were going to interfere with his training etc. he probably wouldn't have agreed to them.

I can't wait to see Roger and see those profiles on him. He will be great on Letterman and I hope he does his show again after he wins it because the winner usually does the show.

I think it's great for him to do so many appearences in the US media. Like it or not, it's the most important country when it comes to make your name famous. It will also help to promote the event itself and I'm sure it won't affect negatively his performances. Go Rogi!

I know he's not the one to care for fame and all, but wouldn't hurt to be a little more known by non-fans of tennis. Afterall, might not even be for himself, but he often stands that he'd love to make tennis more popular.

Interesting that he might be doing Letterman in the States because I thought he might do a talk show in the UK just before/during Wimbledon - he would be brilliant with our Jonathan Ross who's a bit "off the wall" - and, as it happens, is a real tennis fan.

Dirk - I meant Rog doing a show with Jonathan Ross in the UK during Wimbledon .. Serena Williams was on Ross's show just before the tourny started ... that was "interesting" - and funny. Ross has a great sense of humour.

Avocadoe, Jenkins gave Roger good coverage which "last 2 weeks"? Bruce is a good guy, but Thugs is more his style & it shows. Finally had to give him an exc. writeup when he won Wimby this yr, but during tournaments I think he really slights Roger.

I'm really surprised that NYT virtually doesn't cover tennis anymore, even though their elite readers are players. Lately they've just carried Chris Clarey's IHT articles. Maybe Selena will high tail it out to Flushing this yr, since ATP is trying to garner more publicity. Her book on tennis just came out, so maybe she'll have more time.

Does anyone know date of New Yorker article? Undoubtedly that'll be interesting.

I don't see Roger as being a Letterman kind of guy - it's such an adolescent boy kind of program...but we'll see.

TenHound
08-25-2005, 01:27 AM
One more thght. on last yr - he didn't do appearances before 'cuz tennis poobahs didn't believe he could win it. The final so electrified them, that he did non-stop media afterwards til the moment he got on the plane. And the plane was just to LA where he did more.

nobama
08-25-2005, 04:33 AM
I'm not worried that it's too much. I'm sure Andy Roddick has a lot of media and sponsorship crap going on this week too. Besides this is a good way for him to become more well known in the States. The hype's going to be there regardless of what media he does. I mean the press has practically written his name on the trophy already.

i've never really watched Letterman but i figure it's not too different from Jay Leno and other late night talk shows that a lot of celebrities go on. i think that in terms of broadening his fanbase and connecting with fans that's a pretty good move. it'll give people the chance to see that he's not just some boring tennis player they've never heard about. it'll give people the chance to see the relaxed funny side of roger, and he'll get to reach out to an audience that might not ordinarily be interested in tennis, and for those that have heard of him it's just the added bonus of getting to see more of him and learn more about him. i think roger's a very funny guy so i'd love to see him on Letterman. i've never really thought of it as an "adolescent boy" program but if it is, lots adolescent boys like sports so roger's just another great athlete for them to hear about.

as for all the media stuff being too much, i doubt it, both andy roddick and serena williams have a lot of media stuff happening this week and i'm sure roger knows his limits.

oh and he's also going to be on espn classic tonight at 7 et talking about the USO... i posted it in another thread but i can't hurt to post it here too. :)

Yes, that was what that was about. And you noticed she loved him for doing it.

I finally figured out why he's in Premier edition of Am. Vogue for men. Tennis fits their demographic, and Anna Wintour (sp?) adores him...this way she could throw a party which he'd attend.

Roger is that once in a lifetime Athlete who is both Supreme & Beautiful in what he does. It's so difficult for guys not to smother sport in brutality, which in Am. at least, is virtually written in to the definition of the sport - to some extent baseball excepted. It's why there's almost ambivalence toward him by Am. (male) sportswriters. And why they prefer Thugs - he's what they know. Goddamnit, can't we have our precious little sporting arenas back, where we can get our shots of testosterone in peace. Roger turns their arenas into Art Museums. Oh.....our hormones...

Well last year he & Mirka had dinner with Anna Wintour so she must be a fan. I will say Roger's dress sense is better now than ever before. When he opened the Nasdaq he was wearing a nice suit - when Andy opened it a few years back he wore his Reebok garb. I don't know if he's picking out his wardrobe himself or has help from Mirka or someone else, but I like it. :)

I have not heard of Roger turning down Letterman.

In fact, last night they had John McEnroe on Letterman, and Mac tried to publicize tennis a bit and said that tennis is about as exciting now as it has ever been. And "...the number 1 player, maybe the greatest player I have ever seen, Roger Federer, you gotta see him" and Letterman drew a blank. Letterman then said "I only know taht hot Russian babe --who is that?" :retard:

Preview of questions -- why do you have such a good record against roddick, why is it that other people who dominate their sport like armstrong and tiger woods are better known, what would happen if you played with passion like John Mcenroe, what does roddick have to do to beat you, etc.

I will write up more later. It was VERY SHORT. No more than 2 minutes

It went so fast I can't remember the questions..
Oh~~One was *What is your area of vulnerability*?~~He said he would like to improve his volleying.
Another was~~*What would someone have to do to beat you*? (or something like that)
He said that was a secret...they just need to play their own game.

He looked great..black open neck long sleeve dress shirt. Very classy.

here I transcribe Roger's hot seat interview on ESPN this evening:

Roger Federer, welcome to the hot seat. How do you describe your record against andy roddick?

Er, fantastic (laughs). Its one of the best records I have on the tour-- I've beaten him 10 times and lost to him 1 time .. its crucial to my ranking

What's it like to continually beat him?
Er, I've got to play at the top of my game, play my best tennis, the matches we've played have been terrific... at Wimbledon I thought I played the match of my life. and I needed a perfomance like this to beat him

What does andy roddick have to do to move his game to the next level?
Well he's right up there.. instead of losing SF and F he has to win them.. that's the key to success.

Why can't he beat you?
It's like this for the moment... things could change very quickly

If you were an opponent, how would you play against yourself?
Er.. it's a secret you know, but I think the guy would have to play his own game and have the best (luck?)

What do you think your greatest area of vulnerability is?
Maybe the volleys I would say I'd like to improve, I would like to do that more, take more chances. I play very much the percentages, I'd like to take more risks

What would it take for you to play with the emotion of John McEnroe?
Oh I used to be like him so I know how it feels and it was very different. I didn't feel right on the court... I felt embarrassed to be honest, and so I had to get my act together, be different, more focussed on the game.

How did you change?
It was this day in my life when I said that's it. Enough racket throwing, enough swearing, enough commentating at every point, and I changed. And it worked.

You dominate your sport in the way Tiger Woods dominates his, Lance Armstrong dominates his. Why don you get the same acclaim?
Well I'm not sure. Its not up to me to decide. Its the media, puts you out there, the sponsors do their share you know to put you up on the billboards and stuff. I dont know if its not happened to me yet, I'm quite a bit younger than all these guys to really become, what do you say...a megastar .. I'm only 24.

Roger Federer, you're officially off the Hot Seat

:wavey: :D :D Levin! You're back! It's like what almost a year we haven't seen you here?

According to Mitalidas' transcribed interview, the last question is missing in the video... There are other Roger interviews and Blake and Roddick talking about Roger...

Roger looked relaxed and , as usual, classy~~nicely dressed in a black long sleeved shirt.

Thanks for the transcript, mitalidas.

(I polled everyone at my family reunion this past week~~all had heard of him :)
And only 3 of them really follow tennis~~:)
I asked the 18 adults.
