Murray makes huge rankings leap

Andy Murray's Wimbledon exploits have lifted him 99 places to 213th in the latest ATP rankings, making him the sixth highest-placed Briton.

Wimbledon men's champion Roger Federer retains number one position, while Tim Henman drops down two places to 11.

Semi-finalist Thomas Johansson replaces Henman in the top 10, moving to ninth.

In the women's rankings, Wimbledon champion Venus Williams climbs eight places to eighth, while runner-up Lindsay Davenport remains first.

Scotland's Murray, 18, reached the third round at Wimbledon - his first senior Grand Slam event - and led former finalist David Nalbandian by two sets to love before eventually being beaten.

He is playing this week as a wild card entrant in the ATP Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

American Taylor Dent - beaten by Murray in the Stella Artois Championship at Queen's - is top seed.

Great job Andrew!!! :bounce:

Yes the good thing is Andy's ranking will increase even if he loses his first round match, although i expect him to beat saretta quite comfortably. Its after that he will have tougher challenges, probably against mardy fish, and then if he could beat him, dominik hrbarty, thereafter mario ancic, roddick in the semi's, and then he can finish off the tournament by beating Rusedski in the final.

That is maybe too much of a dream, but after RCA Andy will be a top 150 player... ;)

shyscots25
08-14-2005, 07:18 PM
I said that very tongue in cheek! realistically the 2nd round would be a good achievement. Have no idea about the US open wildcards but i would be skeptical of him being allocated one. The only thing in his favour i think is that he won the Boy's event last year and therefore they might wish to be seen to be rewarding someone who has won their event last year and then made rapid progress in the next. Otherwise the form for these things (as per wimbledon) will be for US players who don't make the main draw by ranking to take up the wildcards. I'd say he has a chance, but i am not hopeful! Still a win here tonight and then a good showing at Cincy would really push his case!

yeah but bogdanovic never did anything like Andy. His highest ranking has been 169. Its like comparing your average 3 quid bottle of cheap wine with a quality Moet. Andy is 10 times the player bogdanovic will ever be.

132 and rising. Its all in the balance how high he will go this season. A good cincinatti and us open and he could charge into the top 100 and then with progress after that might make it into the 70's or 80's by the end of the year which would be fantastic.

ClaycourtaZzZz.
08-16-2005, 03:13 PM
Don't expect that much! It's very hard to say how he'll do till end of the season.
It would be great if he can do 100 but I expect 110. I know it's possible but I don't think so. He's still young and didn't play that much on the pro level.

shyscots25
08-18-2005, 08:56 AM
Where is he likely to be next week? Just into the top 120!!! He won't be a top 100 player by the US open, but with a bit of luck in the draw maybe afterwards.

Great progress again this week. He really has very few points to defend and any he does have can be matched and bettered by what he will gain in the remainder of the season!

Next year he will be playing more ATP tournaments as even his ranking will be enough to get him into some of the lesser ones and improved results and he will also get the WC's. It will be interesting to see how he handles the euro clay court season when he gets the chance...The early signs are that (like rusedski to some extent) he could be a player who picks up a lot of points on the north american hard court circuit. It really does seem as if there won't be many surfaces where he struggles. Perhaps indoor but then maybe not as he does like the high bounce to attack his returns!...

120 would be great! Let's just hope for a WC for US Open!

kundalini
08-18-2005, 01:31 PM
No wildcard (says Mark Petchey on Sky last night)

But if you look at Andy's results and the points he has to defend early next year, he is likely to reach no 50 or better by the time of Roland Garros, simply because he will rise with every victory he achieves.

Dodgy2801 (a contributor on another message board) did a calculation of Andy's approx ranking based on form since Queens and it places Andy around number 60 in the world.

shyscots25
08-18-2005, 01:52 PM
Yeah that sounds about right to me. While he is still "fresh" on the tour all he can really do is gain points, and the more the better. It will be the season after next before he really has to start holding onto ranking points gained in previous years, but then again next year he will be playing more (though not all) ATP tournaments and realistically should be improving year on year the next few years if everything has gone to plan. I was looking at his results and apart from some average performances in challengers and future tournaments at the start of the year he really has a great record. Apart from barcelona where he lost in 3 sets to Hernych he has always made the second round (or better!) of all the ATP events he has been in. He also made the 3 rd round of Wimbledon which was a fine debut, and with a bit more fitness would have beaten Nalbandian. His worst recent result on the challenger tour is two quarter finals. All in all Andy's year has been absolutely tremendous. If the worst results since he really burst onto the scene is the first round of ATP in barcelona, and two challenger quarters then things are really good. He is 7-6 on the ATP now and 14-2 on the challenger circuit, so that really speaks for itself.

All the significant progress is still to come but whatever happens in the next few weeks Andy can be proud of what he has achieved in the last few months. Watching the games he has played he is clearly a match for most of the players 20+ and AT HIS VERY BEST would give some of the players in the top 20 a very hard match. His ranking may be 132 but in terms of ability he is much higher than that!

15 points for qualifying + 5 for 1st round loss. But I don't know what points he has to defend (from his 18th tourney, or last August's Futures). I shouldn't think it's many. 12 or less, I would think. A second round appearance (35 + 15 points) would see him hovering just outside the top 100, and a third round (75 + 15) would put him inside the top 100.

I wish somebody would answer this, I would like to know as well! Obviously, it will depend on the size of the tournament, to enter a 32 competitor tournament you would need a much better ranking than to enter a 128 competitor tournament. However, with the Aussie Open at the start of next year, how high will Andy have to be to get direct entry to this?

I suppose as he is not playing in any ranking events until October we must be prepared for him even to drop a little in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully those five challengers coming up later will mean a good move upwards.

I don't see why you expect him to drop, as he has no ranking points to defend in September. If players just below him gain points, he'll drop, if players just above him lose points, he'll rise. Either is equally likely.

Probably the people around him are losing points since they aren't defending their points from 2004.

keep_er_lit!
12-08-2005, 02:30 PM
But if the people around him are losing points, what tournaments are they losing points from? The only tournaments at this time of year are futures.

Sweet4Richard

yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

Futures is the only thing I can come up with.

decrepitude
12-09-2005, 09:02 PM
Yes, futures points are still coming off. And I hate to tell you, but Andy has 24 points to come off for the 2 Futures he won last December. I understand these two sets of points will be replaced by two sets of 4 points each from the next highest sets of points he earned this year and which are not yet counted because only the highest 18 scores are counted. So he will drop a net 16 points. His current total points of 587 will drop to 571 and he is therefore likely to drop back to 64th place for the end of the year.
This ought to be correct, as I don't think any of the players around him in the rankings will be playing in the current Futures!

keep_er_lit!
12-09-2005, 09:43 PM
He won't gain those extra sets of 4 points in the entry ranking though, because all points count for it anyway. It's the highest 18 scores that are counted for the atp race.

Taken from ATP site - my bold:

"The INDESIT ATP Entry Ranking is based on calculating, for each player, his total points from the four Grand Slams, the nine Tennis Masters Series Tournaments and the Tennis Masters Cup of the Entry Ranking period, and his best five results from all eligible Tournaments in the Entry Ranking period. For every Grand Slam or Tennis Masters Series Tournament for which a player is not in the Main Draw, and was not (and, in the case of a Grand Slam, would not have been, had he and all other players entered) a Main Draw Direct Acceptance on the original Acceptance List, and never became a Main Draw Direct Acceptance, the number of his results from all other eligible Tournaments in the Entry Ranking period, that count for his ranking, is increased by one.Once a player is accepted in the Main Draw of one of these thirteen Tournaments, as a Direct Acceptance, a Qualifier, a Special Exempt or a Lucky Loser, or having accepted a Wild Card, his result in this Tournament shall count for his ranking, whether or not he participates."

My original post stands, I think?

Missing all these weeks hasn't caused too many problems rankings-wise - yet. Andy descended to #14, today went up to #13 because Youzhny dropped behind him, but by next week will be back to 14 as he cannot defend this week's points.

Something's been bothering me about Murray's ATP ranking breakdown, so I would be grateful if someone would enlighten or correct me.

Best of other countable tournaments: this includes 0 points for Indianapolis

Yet, Dubai SF 75 points has been shoved to non-countable tournaments, despite being valid to Mar 2009. Also, Queen's Club's 55 points are greater than Indianapolis.

Factoring Dubai's 75 points under countable tournaments (and removing Indianopolis) would revise current ranking points to 2490.

Further implication is that Murray would definitely pass Ferrer now even if he loses to Wawrinka (2565 over 2490 points).

I might be totally misinterpreting this. Any comments?

The 0 pointer for Indianapolis is included on his ranking breakdown as a punishment for withdrawing from the event without giving adequate notice. As far as I'm aware each player is allowed to pull out of 1 tournament a year at short notice without incurring a 0 pointer on there record, this was Murrays second of the year, having previously pulled out of Valencia (I think).

Djokovic has a lot of points to defend in the first half of next year. Of course, he may do so, but so far he hasn't made a great job of defending points/titles.

That may only be a temporary blip, we will have to see, and certainly the cliff to climb to #3 for Andy is very steep. The top 3 are a long way ahead on points.
