Yes he lost, but I'm not sad. We shouldn't forget that it was his 1st tournament after a break for injury. It's only his return to competition and he made the QFs!!! That's a good performance in my opinion. :) Next tournament is Stuttgart. Mariano won against Oli Rochus 4/6 6/2 6/3 . I was in the stands to cheer loud for him. He really badly began the match, making a lot of errors. It seemed that it wasn't his day. He was shouting a lot between the points, mostly to yell how bad he was! But don't expect me to report the exact words...I'd be cringing at simply repeating! ;) What matters is that he has put himself together, calmed down and turned his frustration into his traditional fighting spirit, which was so great to witness. :D I was sitting very close to his staff and he got all the support he needed at the rightest times. He ended up losing the first set but he nevertheless managed to break back once. Which was a good sign that he was coming back and firmly decided to fight. Which I personally have never doubted, but it wasn't everybody's case in the stands. After losing the 1st set, he played even more aggressive, and succeeded to considerably reduce the numbers of errors. Oli lost his 1st serve and all this combined gave Mariano 2 breaks and the win of the 2nd set 6/2. The atmosphere was really great. It was electric in the stands. Those who had thought that it was over after they saw how he played in the 1st set have been wrong to leave before the end, they have definitely missed sthg. Splendid Mariano! The 3rd set has been a bit tighter but Mariano finally managed to break Oli, after all the break points he's had. Oli was fighting hard to avoid being broken. He's a very good player. Even Mariano applauded some of his great shots. Anyway, the deliverance came when Mariano won the match taking the 3rd set 6/3. It was so great to see him live from the stands, his everlasting self-encouragement, his showing his will to win, his fighting spirit. I'm very happy to have been able to witness it live for the 1st time. And the best image I absolutely wanna keep in mind is his joy and bright smile leaving the court, watching in the direction of those who have cheered loud for him for the whole match!!!! :p

I've just posted this in the David forum:
David will be playing an exhibition on Dicember 10th, along with Mariano Puerta, Mariano Zabaleta and Gastón Gaudio in the Indoor Master Tennis 2005. It will be played in Orfeo, Cordoba, and will be shown on tv for Argentina (at least) on ESPN A couple of weeks after this, there will be the Bs As exhibition. Both will be plaed on a similar surface than the AO, but the Cordoba one will be indoors.

Hey Choupi

I am so pleased you got to talk to him.

Corina and I were sitting together at the Oli match - it was great, no it was more than great... it was unbelievable.... 7 games in a row he won, from 1 set and a break down.... He broke Oli's spirit in the third. It was phenomenal.

I have seen Mariano nearly every day since last Saturday and he has told me he is very happy, very pleased to be back on tour. He is playing brilliantly.....

I am so pleased he's back.

Corina! - see you tomorrow!!!!!

Mariano is already in Kitzbuhel... he has been seen watching Nico Lapentti practice.

That match was simply magical! I was sitting with Betty, front row, just in front of his staff, where Monaco and the others were sitting.

I think we have met on Tuesday, in the morning, well, at noon, during Mariano's practise with Gaston. I guess I have spotted little Lucas. We were 4, 3 French girls and 1 Italian. Just next to you. And I suppose that it was Reiko too...with the big camera with the huge lens! I had a light-blue T-shirt, to recall the Argentine colours...

Anyway enough the fawning over the Zabaleta body, there was an interesting experience in the scoring thread.

As I would rather be in Kitzi, but hey no such luck. There was this clown that disrespected Mariano in a big way, but he was sorted out. Using some ridiculous theory that Almagro was going to win, that's not the problem.

What happened is when he says that losing to Mariano on clay is a bad loss, that is just ridiculous, if it was said on grass I could understand it, but not clay. Needless to say a few posters had to set about giving some facts to prove that "fact' wrong.

It definitely wasn't a good match, Gaudio started solid (and he didn't talk to anybody) and Mariano couldn't get his serves in and his attacking forehand was, no where. Gaudio got the 5-1 really fast, and then the rain appeared (the court was almost empty, btw).

After 20 mins, the rain had stopped, and we thought that Mariano at least would be less pissed off. Well, it wasn't that way. At one point, when Gaudio hit a nice drop shot and Mariano returned it with a sutile ball that bit the net, Gaudio tried to smile to make it lighter for him. Mariano didn't even look at him.

Tha handshake was the coldest you could ever imagine between these two.

You can't expect a guy who's been able to hold his serve only once in a match, shaking hands, jumping of joy, even against his bestest friend, after such a dramatic score! They're friends for life, nothing will question that for sure. It's been hard for the fan that I am of both to cheer and enjoy the getting into the final of Gaston, I can only figure that for Mariano, it's been so much tougher, being the very 1st one concerned.

The Gaston Mariano match should be ignored due to horrible rain conditions. They came out hand in hand to "Let Me Entertain You - Robbie Williams" and were set for an awesome match - then the heavens opened.... The Umpire suspended the match once, then they came out again - more rain - basically Mariano couldn't concentrate in the weather conditions and the Umpire should have postponed the match - so....

Oh George, you're so right. Mariano, please don't cut your hair again so short like in the above pic! And please don't mind if some people say you have a bird's nest on your head! At least I don't mind about that bird's nest, I like it. :)

I can't say I dislike him with short hair...but it's true that, based on my well-known-now personal tastes...I prefer him now. :) I like it when my fingers have a long way to go through the hair... Ok, enough said!:tape:

I like Mariano with longer hair too. He's so sexy that way. :o

Enough of the hair talk.

Mariano will play Thomas Johansson in the 1st round of the US Open a very tough ask, but one can always hope for a good result.

I think the last time they played was Hamburg 2002 - Mariano ground him into the dust - (ToJo was Defending Aus Open Champ at the time - Mariano was a Qualie) - it was a great match - (front row seat...)

Fast hardcourt and clay I know which surface I'd rather play Johansson on, then again in one of the great ironies that the US Open is where big Zab had his best result in a Slam.

It's not like your belief in Mariano is something that should be questioned. I just don't think he'll win, practical over the heart.

GWH - if he's the same person he was in Kitz and Stutt - he will win... there was a huge change!

basil333

he should have lost against Oli Rochus - the Old Mariano (pre Monaco) would have done.... Choupi was there.... she can verify that...

basil333
08-25-2005, 11:44 AM
and I really dont think he would have spent the last 3+ weeks preparing for the US Open - only to look at the draw and see Thomas first and think - oh well - Thomas Johansson - I can't beat him on Hard-court - I will go home now...

basil333
08-25-2005, 11:45 AM
If I am wrong - and Thomas wins in 3 easy straight sets (6-1 6-2 6-3) then I will apologise on Tuesday or Wednesday :) .

I just have a really good feeling about this.

Well for one he is playing on his surface on those 2 events and two he was playing in front of a very devoted group of people, something he won't have in New York. As long as he does his best, that's all that counts, it's not the same training as playing a tournament on hardcourts, but anything can happen.

I also hate this draw a lot

As most of you know, I am always cheering for the Swedish guys, but in this matter I hope the better one would win, cos I like both of them a lot :yeah:

(And I am not writing this because I am posting in Marianos forum right now ;) )

GWH - you surprise me with your attitude this morning.... you don't usually type in the "kick a dog when he's down" style.... IMHO - I wish I was at the first round match - but hey - he knows for a fact he doesn't REALLY need the devoted group of fans to be in the crowds in person to know they are behind him - he knows that they are behind him each point where ever they are.

I wouldn't know I have sat through him getting thrashed and not left, now that would be the easy option, then again if someone is going to support Mariano then the easy option isn't an option. I'd love to be proven wrong and it will be a joy for it to happen.

Maybe it's the whole US Open thing that leaves me with less enthusiasm as usual.

and sorry if I am sad.... but even if Mariano's draw was

Roger Federer 1st round,
followed by Fabrice Santoro 2nd Round
followed by Juan Carlos Ferrero 3rd Round
followed by Andre Agassi 4th round
followed by Andy Roddick
followed by Nadal

followed by all the really top hard to beat Hard Court players..

i WOULD still support him win, lose or retire... but that's me - I am the eternal optimist - and I would love to see him win more trophies, get back high in the rankings and be successful - because that's me.

I can attest that it was a great match. That many would have left the stands after the 1st set, because they'd have lost faith as to the outcome of the match. True that Mariano fought back on every single point to finally win that match. But GWH is right when he says that he won't have that devoted group of fans behind him...I know what you mean when you say he doesn't need to have them in the stands to know they're supporting him.
You know I'm a fan of Mariano as much as I am of ToJo. So this match is really special for me. I want both of them to give their best. Both of them deserve to win it. And I so much look forward to the after match...when I'm finally relieved because it's over.

Depends on what's left. I mean The USO gets in the way of Palermo and Bucharest, but this year has been frustrating. The frog was getting a pounding and then our man gets injured, then comes back well and as for the rest of year, as long as he can remain injury free, then cool.

He's proved he's a survivor, and keeps getting up each time he gets kicked down... he's had more than enough of his share of bad luck.... now its someone else's turn for the bad luck - and I do NOT want to wish that on anyone....
