Best of luck to:

Roger/Sjeng (there can only be a winner from that match for me)
Yevgeny (after he's taken out Safin, Mirnyi should be no trouble)
Raemon (at least one Dutchman in the final would be nice)
Sebastien (although if it were anywhere other than Rotterdam, I'd be supporting Escude for this one...)

Well esther, it's precisely because Escude has won twice in a row in Rotterdam and is, I believe, on a 14-match winning streak here that I want to see a new winner here - Federer, either Dutchman, even Kafelnikov, would make an interesting change.

I like Escude a lot more than Grosjean, but when you consider what happened to Grosjean last year with him having three match points in the final set and not taking them, revenge would be very sweet indeed.

Chloe le Bopper
02-21-2003, 11:35 AM
I'm hoping for Ferrero-Grosjean and Schalken-Kafelnikov.

Normally I would go with Roger over Sjeng, but Roger won a title last week and should now spread the joy around a bit.. That and my friend who has decided to desert me all reading week to go to LA, has a big crush on Schalken. So I'm cheering on her behalf ;)

I suppose that "because he's such a fine hunk of man meat", wouldn't be the appropriate answer?

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure where it came from. She developed it this summer in Toronto I believe. She must have seen him in the book, or walked by him playing doubles on her way to the bathroom or something, because when he came on for his next singles match she got unusually excited. She whipped out her camera, and started saying things like "gee Becca, I hope that he changes shirts this match! Does he usually do that?" Trust me, I was as baffled as you are.

This fascination continued at the US Open, where she must have shot off about half a dozen photos of Sjeng changing his shirt during his match against Mark. This was one of the rare occasions that we weren't rooting for the same guy.

For some reason or another, she seems to find him incredibley hot. I've stopped bugging her about it, and just go with it. There are far worse things in life, than being dragged to Schalken matches.

I might add that this is vast improvement upon her last tennis crush: Andy Roddick.

LOL! :D :D :D :D

Philippoussis vs Schalken, when you compare their two games, looks like such a mismatch that you think Mark will sweep the Sjengster off court - and yet these are the two men that toiled for over five hours to produce that 20-18 final set at Wimbledon in 2000. I remember by the time it got to 14-14, someone in the crowd was shouting "Come on anybody!".

Schalken said afterwards that once he'd had a shower, he felt a little better about losing the match than he had when he went off court. All the BBC pundits then predicted that Philippoussis would be in no fit shape having played such a marathon five-setter to put up any real fight against Henman in the next round. What do they know?

I never did see that match but I recall the final set scoreline. It came to mind during Australia during Roddick-Younes.... Was that a high quality match, or was it up and down untill that last set?

I seem to recall that some pundits also suggested that Henman was going to give Hewitt a hell of a match last year

I hold out hope that if a battered Goran can serve his way to a Wimbledon title, then so can Mark! That said, that comparison is a little flawed, since Mark never had the chance to develop into the player that Goran once was...

I never actually saw very much of Schalken and Philippoussis - I only saw fragments of the final set, and realised afterwards that Philippoussis served to stay in the match 14 times before finally breaking Schalken, who led two sets to one in that match. The agonies Sjeng has gone through at Wimbledon...

Put it this way: Henman and Arazi went on Centre Court to start their match a few games into the final set. When they'd finished the match, Henman winning in straight sets, that final set was still going on.

I tried to talk my friend off of Andy Roddick for over a year. That match against Lapentti is what finally did her in. All the effort I put in to turn her off him, and all I had to do was wait for him to handle things for himself...

I forget where I got "fine hunk of man meat" from, but I used it the other day on another board, as a means of description for a picture of Michel Kratochvil. It was immediately following his win over Agassi, and he seemed to be in the middle of a mad thrust. So I called this his "YES! I AM a fine hunk of man meat!" thrust - or something along those lines.

Ah right, I think I just looked at the thread that was newest on this forum, I didn't think about the original starting times. Still, I suppose the question applies in reverse now - why did awesome4hand copy this thread afterwards?

Roger seems to be unstoppable at the moment, doesn't he? Mind you, whenever I say that about a player they go and lose their next match, and Mirnyi is leading Y-Man at the moment - we don't want a repeat of the US Open, do we Roger?

No we most certainly do not want that!! Anyone know if Yevy is not playing as well or Max IS playing well??

Rogi will be busy again tomorrow w sgles and dbles!! He likes the matchplay, so he's got it! ;)

Must be a very strange feeling, playing with your doubles partner and then facing him on the other side of the net on the same day. Hmm... Roger hasn't played a really big server yet during his winning streak, with the exception of Ljubicic who did after all retire after losing the first set in Marseille. So be on your guard, Rogi!

Yes, Max!!! Oh oh, now he faces his friend and dbles partner Rogi in the semis! And they play their dbles tomorrow too!!

Rogi needs revenge, once again! ;)

OK, VAMOS Juanqui!

*sigh*

To top it off, David is getting creamed in the third set of his match

Just not my day I guess :o

Hopefully he just turned it slightly, and it will be better in a few days. As opposed to a break.

But the beauty of playing your doubles partner, on the other hand, is you know their game, you know how they play. So it might be in Roger's favor if he knows Max's weaknesses ;)

Will make for a rather awkward doubles match afterwards, maybe, but nonetheless.

Congrats on the win, Max. Zhenya's no pushover on indoor courts (LOL, I think we've said that about almost everyone who's lost ;))

I don't like Raemon reach semifinals this way  The tournament site said Juan Carlos will be out for a few weeks

Geez Louise, Grosjean served for the second set just a moment ago, only to let himself be broken right back - now Escude leads 6-5 in the second and "Seb" is serving to stay in the match. He does have a habit of letting these chances slip away from him, doesn't he?

but now the second set was taken in a tense breaker...A decider like last year... so who will play sluiter/????

To lose the top seed and the defending champion both through retirements on the same day is an awful blow for the tournament, and the winner's victory is going to feel rather hollow with all the good fortune that they have received. Still, Nicolas' winning run had to end some time, I suppose.
