richard needs to be more confident about what he achieved and what he is able of.

That's a little bit annoying hearing him praising opponent past performances.OK Gonzalez is a good player, he reached AO and JO Finale but richard has his chances against him!he has to be more confident about his strengh. He had 2 semi finals in warm up tournaments,he won more matchs than gonzales and is more confident than him logiquely so

Someone please show him Marin's match against Gonzo last year. Richie can undoubtedly play even better than that. I hope he's just being nice and crediting the opponent, but not really lacking optimism and confidence going into the match.

I don't remember if the journalists laugh, but I found the part about the "beau perdant" quite cute too, he has a nice way to put it (when he compares with the Hewitt match at the USO - he loses, but he loses in style).

And the funniest part is at the end, he talks about the forehand of Gonzo, says Gonzo really hits it like a bull, especially on the last breakpoint, "I saw the ball leave the racquet, I immediately knew it was going to be a huge shot, boy, it was painful!" And he makes a movement with the hand showing the ball flying under his nose.
It's hard to explain, but it is funny with his accent and the usual "putain!" at the end.
It's a nice interview indeed.

Thanks for the video and summary.

HE's ADORABLE as always but man can he fidget - he can't sit still for a second can he.

I only understood a "incroyable" and a "tres bien" but I could tell he was in good spirits - glad to see that.

Truc, is putain a curse word? The only 'bad' word they taught us in school was zut.

Truc
01-25-2009, 08:41 AM
It's a bad word (it means "whore"), but they use it in the South of France more like a simple interjection. So it's not bad when he says it, just funny, but well, it's a curse word, he cracks me up when he uses it so much even in front of foreign journalists.

reggie1
01-25-2009, 09:03 AM
Thanks for that Truc. I learnt Putain La from Richard because of Wimbly 07, he said it when he found out he had to play Roger at noon the next day after beating Roddick. His accent is the strongest French accent I have ever heard! Does Jo have a softer accent because he is from Le Mans because I find him easier to understand? plus he speaks slower!

Truc
01-25-2009, 09:55 AM
Jo has no accent at all imo, I don't think they have an accent in Le Mans. People from the South have the strongest accent in France. (Gilles has the Parisian accent although he was born in Nice, unfortunately, he grew up in a Parisian suburb.)

Jo is perfect to practice your basic listening comprehension indeed. No accent, he speaks very slowly, makes short sentences and says very simple things.

xhr75019
01-25-2009, 09:59 AM
Richard has a strong accent from south. It used to be even stronger a few years back, almost comical at times. On the other hand, Jo doesn't have any recognizable regional accent.

reggie1
01-25-2009, 11:24 AM
If only Jo had been speaking on my French listening comprehension tests when I was younger! Do the Northerners take the mickey out of the Southerners then with their accents? Does France have many regional accents like England?

Keijan

I have friends from the South of France and they feel like it's the rest of the country who has an accent, not them

Paulo who is from Strasbourg, next to Germany, has a strong accent too. And you don't want to listen to Wawrinka speaking French, the Swiss accent is horrible!
But I don't feel like neither Gilles nor Gaël have an accent (Gaël speaks Creol but that's a whole different thing :p) Gilles has quite a "dragging" (traînante ?) voice but it's just him I think. Llodra doesn't have one either imo. What do you call the Parisian accent ?

What I prefer from Richie's way of speaking is his "avé" instead of "avec" (with). That's too cute.
His expressions are too funny sometimes ; "I returned like a cactus..."
And Fran, "putain" is not a solely South swearing, I use it twice an hour :p

reggie1
01-25-2009, 03:18 PM
I know it's been mentioned before but where on earth does that "return like a cactus" come from? Has anyone ever asked him to clarify it? It must have caused a raised eyebrow or two at the time? Or a laugh!

Hahaha this accent thing is like opening Pandora's box...
Reggie, I don't think accents are as strong in France as in England. Basically I would say there are 4 "main" accents : southern accent is the most widely shared and can be off-putting for foreigners because it affects the pronunciation of many words (not the syntax). Inside this general "southern" accent a trained ear will distinguished if the speaker comes from Bordeaux, Toulouse, Béziers, Marseille (Zidane has a typical Marseille accent) etc... There is also a "center" accent (usually not so strong) with discernable nuances from Auvergne, Saint-Etienne, Lyon or Franche-Comté or Jura. Strangely the Bretons (people from Britanny, west of France) have no accent at all but they have a dialect (one might even say a language) widely spoken and even taught in some schools. Alsatians (east of France) have both an accent (quite strong) and a dialect. Sorry Keijan but I think Paulo's accent is very light, barely noticeable in fact. And sorry again Keijan I totally love the swiss accent (des goûts et des couleurs...). Finally there is also a nothern accent going along with alot of coloquianisms and picturesque turn of phrases, almost a dialect. It is called le "ch'ti". It was quietly disapearing but brought back into fashion last year by the movie "Les Ch'tis" which had a huge success. Try to catch it if you can, it's a funny comedy. Let's not forget the belgian accent quite strong with a lot of idiomatic expressions and the french canadian accent, probably the strongest of all with a whole distinctive vocabulary. And finally, yes Kiejan of course there is a parisian accent (l'accent parigot!) : think Maurice Chevalier or Gabin, Bernard Blier and Lino Ventura in the Audiard movies. Those examples show you that it is gravely endangered and tends to be replaced by the awfull "banlieue" (suburb) accent which usually mixes bad syntax and poor vocabulary with traces of arab intonation.

Truc
01-25-2009, 05:27 PM
I say "putain" all the time too, Marion, I just meant they also use it in the South in a more neutral, non-pejorative way. Never mind.
(As for the Parisian accent, it's not really an accent, more a way to talk:
http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=DznvYBJV0JI - go to 40', "Djokovic, il regarde la balle comme ça, genre elle est bonne... Je regarde derrière, Thierry, il me fait..." Aaaargh!)

It's not Richard, but Rodgeur talked about Richard's match after his match today:
http://video.lequipe.fr/video/iLyROoafJQ5G.html
He says Richard played a perfect match, it's too bad he lost, it deserved a draw. There were only winners at the end, it was fantastic, but it must be tough for him to lose again after the Murray match, etc. He really likes Ritchie!

(And I just saw that Canal will follow the 4 guys on the tour during the year and have reports about them every 6 weeks, but we have time, it starts in one month!
http://www.tvmag.com/article/sport/42468/canal+-va-suivre-tsonga-monfils-gasquet-et-simon.html)

Thank you XHR. It's interesting to hear about the differences. Just goes to show what I know because I think Richard sounds the most like Maurice Chevalier out of all of them and Chavalier had a Parisien accent! :o
I do find Jo the easiest to understand and then Paulo actually, even if he does mumble a little.
We have many different accents in England, maybe Richard's accent is like France's equivalent to a Liverpudlian accent in England, that would very hard for a foreigner to understand. Most English people find that difficult.

Dear Keijan I don't think posting in french is forbidden here that would be un comble !:)
Je ne voulais en aucun cas te casser, juste faire avancer la discussion et je te pensais plus vieux et un garçon :D. Sorry about that, je suis nouveau ici.

but they are not the same type of persons, certainly not. ;) And the five years of age difference are clearly obvious. I just think as players there is a similarity in the way, that they see tennis as a game in which you outmanouevre your opponent and have a soft spot for the most beautiful shot, not always the most efficcient one, and not as a battle of endurance to be decided on physique.

I am so nit-picking on this, because Richard has been compared to Roger so often in various media and it has not done him any good.

You mean the .rar or the extension of the file within? For the first, WinRAR is basically free, after a while it will just nag you with the screen to buy it, but it will still work normally otherwise. 7zip also decompresses rar files and is completely free AFAIK. Thanks Tess, great video, he look really babyfaced there.

Yes, 2 years in the cruel world of the ATP has taken away his babyface.

Thanks for another great backhand video. But he really needed a fist pump at the end of that shot not an exhausted, relieved look... tell your opponent that you could do this all day not that you are relieved to hit one winner. It was a nice shot but imagine how good it could have been IF he hit it about 4 feet CLOSER to the baseline... I think he's learning that - at least I hope he's learning that.

I agree, this shot is sort of genious Gasquet. But that won't win him matches on a regular basis. And the shot of the tournament, that's something Richard already had more than once. However, looking at the Gonzalez match, I feel he clearly understood that his future is at the baseline or even within the court and AT THE NET.

Hi everyone. I have a question for you who have been watching Richard play for several years now : which are, in your opinion, his best matchs in term of quality of playing, dramaturgy, etc...? And is there some fan site where you can dl some of them (like there is for Gilles) ?

Hi Xavier (did I get that right?) :wavey:
Personally, I tend to watch a lot of Richard on youtube, there is loads of stuff on him. The only problem is some of it quite short as if you post anything that lasts loger than 10 minutes you have to pay. I know lots of the others use Megaupload but I always seem to have trouble with it. His best match imo is Wimbly 07 semi-final against Roddick, there are some good highlights on youtube and also there is his match against Murray Wimbly 08. Tess and Lauren will probably know more.

I would also add the Murray Paris 2007 match and the ones against Nadal and Djokovic at the 2007 TMC as well as the first set of Nadal at Toronto last year.

I don't think I'm the person to ask on classic matches since I've only just started watching in the last year:lol: But I can help with megaupload, if you can't figure that website out Xavier:wavey:

I don't know if you've come across this thread on GM: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=14156 but they have some Richard matches on there. Some of the older megaupload links have expired, but you might get lucky:) Sometimes Sexysova (he is in that GM thread) has Richard matches on his website (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=8091112&postcount=11420), you just have to register to get them...all the commentary is in Czech:lol: Fed Express's website (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=8042603&postcount=11394) can also be found on the GM link. He has a few Fed/Gasquet matches, like the 2005 Monte Carlo. The Monte Carlo match is one that I would definitely recommend:)

I don't think it was working for some ppl (worked for me), but did you try Tommyfan's megaupload link? I know it's also on t3nnis.tv as a torrent

If anyone can find a copy of Gasquet/Squillari at Monte Carlo 02 for me to download, I will love them forever? Long shot I know. :p I have seen it but it was so long ago, I'd like to re-watch it....

xhr_I reccommend Gasquet/Vliegen from RG 07. ;) is masochistic Oh and DavisCup06 vs Safin.

Do you need only matches that he won? :p I would say Monte Carlo 2005 against Federer and Nadal, he played some great tennis at USO'05 as well, DC'06 1st R tie vs Haas, Halle'06 vs Federer :worship:, Toronto'06 matches (pretty much all of them... well, the first half of the final vs Federer :o), USO'06 vs Hewitt - Richie played incredibly well in the last three sets, but for the cramps... the first half of the Ferrero match in MC'07, Wimby'07 QF against Roddick of course :worship:, first half of the Wimby Murray match , first set of the Toronto'08 Nadal match, match vs Gonzo was great as well :wavey:
Of course, there are a lot more, but these were the first ones that came into my mind. ;)

LOL..... I might have to contact Fox Sports here & see if I have any luck

It's my all time Tennis Magic Moment..... It doesn't get any better then that... Will be hard to see a set like that as far as the level from both players..... It was Spine Tinkling Stuff.... How could you not get excited about that, & that's not from a Dedicated Richie Lover with Rose Coloured Glasses looking on!

True to Richie form though if he had only got that early break when he was so close to going up in the set....

Richie just doesn't have Lady Luck come to visit him when he needs a big big point that could change the set or match around...

To me not far behind is the drama & excitement of Richie v Gonzo....
the crowd they were the making of it & they were in party mode even before the players arrived on court...

But what does it for me could be so different for other Richie fans... We all have our own special Richie moments we like to treasure... but we all wish it was like that everytime he walks out into battle for all the right reasons & coming away with a win!

I am wondering if anyone has Richie v Rafa from Toronto in 2008???

I have it in my DVR on the TV, but there's no way to get it out:sad: I actually had Gilles' match recorded, and there was a rain delay, so they showed the first set during the delay.

Thanks a lot for that video!

I have a question, maybe not so interesting but I'm too curious!!... Does somebody know who is the man who is talking to Richie during a training session, about 2 minutes after the beginning of that video? He says to Richard :"il faut que tu te mettes dans la tête qu'ils ne sont pas plus forts que toi" and wears a black short. He maybe is his physiologist?

Truc
03-04-2009, 10:56 AM
It's his osteopath, François Teissedre Dalou.
They also say in the video that Barbarin is his physical trainer, but I don't see him a lot during Richard's matches, I always see Teissèdre together with Peyre, is Barbarin following Richard on the tour too? I like Barbarin (on a purely shallow level, of course, I don't know him).

Richard is "adaptable" (traduction de polyvalent ?), can play as well doubles or singles. He's the "joker" of the team. He was hurt by what happened last year because he loves this competition so much. He's willing to give his everything in it again ;)

You still would have beat me. I would not have answered a single one, with the exception of the French DC-titels. I just read somewhere that the old musquetaires won six in a row, and some more from recent times would have brought me close to the correct answer of 9.
But both, Richie and Mika are good. :worship:

Truc
03-07-2009, 08:38 AM
I also heard this week for the 1st time that they had won 6 in a row, I didn't know that either before. I knew about the last 3, like Richard, but I would have thought there were at least 1-2 more, so I would have answered more than 9.
I knew Boetsch, that one really is easy for us.
And I think I would have answered Clément for the question about the active player with the most DC matches because it was written the other day in the Stade 2 video that he has played 28 DC matches, I noticed it and thought that's a lot. But I just looked it up and Seb has 26, same for Fabrice... So it would have been just a lucky guess.

But Forget-Leconte, the seeding of France, the longest DC match in the history of the French team... I had absolutely no idea, I was impressed!

Maybe something got lost in the translation. Flirt and womanizer are 2 different things. A FLirt is more innocent and like a wanna be womanizer who just can't quite make it. Anyway if Richard is "le plus draguer" he is extremely discrete because it seems like we NEVER see any photos of him with a woman (except in that Romanian night club after DC last year :))

No no, he never did that, I'm the one who mistranslated the stuff, I'm sorry about it. The good translation was given in another thread.
