Looks even more stunning when htey are all strung together. Why did roddick even hit the ball anywhere near his backhand, and he seemed to actually hit more to his backhad - death wish?

The second one at 0:13 is just absurd, I have no idea how he even hit that. He's backing up awkwardly facing the ball while he's running backward, and somehow as the ball is almost behind him he whips it up with some kind of half-volley on the run for a down the line winner on the baseline.

Roddick was not in control of things for large parts of the match, so it was not him deciding how the ralleys went. I obviously adore all those BH winners, but the one at 1.23 when he changes direction looks soooo easy. And then, there is of course MP. :)

gr8 friends for japan - atp all stars vs fort lauderdale strikers

here are some highlights:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pbX_iuxRTI&hd=1

- you can see richie trying to be a menacing defender, then getting passed the ball by troicki and attempt a pass through the opponents at around 50-59s...

and then there is a bit of tsonga as well.

the blokes look fantastic, but yeah, they definitely should stick to playing sports with racquets and a net ;)

I was just checking if any of this week's tournament final rounds were on tennis channel and see that the Gasquet-Federer Monte Carlo QF from what seems ages ago (was it 2005?)is playing on The Tennis Channel tonight - Friday at 10:30 pm eastern time.

If I'm home I'll have to see it _ i've only ever seen the highlights and I'd LOVE to see where Richard first broke through to the big times not to mention watching him beat Federer for his first and only (so far) time.

Nothing new, except that they showed a clip of Tatiana and him winning the mixed in 04. They then asked him what he thought of Tatiana as a commentator and he said she was doing well and that she smiled a lot. He added that she speaks well and that she's much better than him in that department, to which the male commentator replied that he's improving (not so timid anymore). Richard then responded (at the same time that Tatiana said, "You talk too quickly" :tape: ) that what matters is that he improves on the court :spit:

Hey Richard - TIme to work on getting rid of that tennis shirt tan - but guess he'd look even more scrawny next to Dancevic without his shirt.

O.K. not what I was supposed to get from that video - good to see him at work although I didn't like seeing that he was practicing the same old serve and retreat 5-7 steps back (very obvious in the video in the other thread) but know that is not likely to ever change so might as well not comment on that any more.

Noticed the shoes immediately, but he did at least have a suit and not a Lacoste hoodie or his famous black polo and jeans! Although he looked like he really didn't want to be wearing that suit - the tie was a bit messy and those shoes.

Post match interview after the loss to Ferrer.

Quite a reasonable analysis, one has to find the right balance between defense and attaque, in the end Ferrer was better, has to play more often against top guys to improve, will play Montpellier which is important for him.

His interviews are getting better, he looks into the camera, and his answers are less stereotype.

He says that he would like to have Séb's forehand and also his chip backhand, but in principle he prefers to keep his own BH and Séb says you are right to do so.

In the second intervention he complains about the empty stands (namely the front loges) at lunch time during his first match against Zopp.

I wish my comprehension of french was better . It goes by so fast that I only can understand bits and pieces.
I think he said he likes sushi , red wine , and raclette . And that he doesn't ski or snowboard for fear of hurting his knees while he is playing tennis
I had never heard of raclette before , so I looked it up - certainly looks like something I would like !

I wish my comprehension of french was better.

Your French is pretty good to understand anything from Richard. He talks so fast!

What I think he says is (and I’m sure I’ve made lots of mistakes and missed bits out.) ... he’d choose day over night; sushi over dorade (fish - bream); a 4 x 4 (I'm guessing) or convertible is a tough car choice for him. He doesn’t think it’s about to happen for him (or maybe he’s not at that point in his life) but he finally chooses the 4 x 4. He would choose skiing over snowboarding after tennis, as he’s started doing that already – I think he says he went skiing to Saint Junien - France (either that or Saint Juneau, Alaska!)

He’d choose red wine over white – I think the interviewer kind of questions whether he thought Richard might answer that he doesn’t drink at all, but Richard says he likes to drink wine; he chooses raclette over fondu – I think he says raclette is not a sin (although with all that cheese it does sound very unhealthy!)- and he’d still want red wine with that, rather than white which takes the interviewer a little by surprise (you can totally tell this is a French quiz!)

He wouldn’t choose between football or rugby because he loves them both. He played rugby as a child. He chooses PSG (Paris Saint Germain – a famous French football team) over OM (Olympique Marseille - another big French football team) but Montpellier was also his team when he was growing up. He moved to Paris at 14 and became a PSG fan. He’s been to Parcs des Princes (PSG’s stadium) many times. He knows a lot of people at the club but also at Montpellier too.

He’d choose Roland Garros over Wimbledon; Facebook and twitter are not really his thing.

totally missed about the sauna /hamam . Didn't understand that part at all
I did get a little bit about twitter vs facebook and his soccer team choices
maybe I understand french better than I thought !
But yes, he does speak quite quickly - he does that in English as well .
Knowing a bit about his personality , it does not surprise me that twitter is not something he would enjoy - although I do see that he has an account , and he mentioned he would try a bit on it . Although he has said nothing since Wimbledon ( he talked about a difficult loss ,
but that was sport - or something like that )
I know the cheese is not the healthiest thing to eat , but I happen to know he really likes it - last year , he and my daughter had a brief chat about the different type of cheeses on the buffet at the hotel in IW . Seems the hotel restaurant brings in some cheeses from France to make the French players feel a little bit more at home - and he seemed to be enjoying that . He also really likes chocolate - but this interviewer didn't ask him about that one

I am rather sure that this one is his real account, though he might also have another one which is protected.

I absolutely agree with you that twitter does not at all match his personality and we should not expect him to reveal anything of relevance. Richard does not like being in the limelight and though he has learned to deal with them, press conferences are still a nightmare for him. He does much better with fans though, there was more than one occasion when he showed me his appreciation for my support.

Totally - Twitter and Facebook are full of haters too. Robin Haase has been getting death threats.

Richard does not like being in the limelight and though he has learned to deal with them, press conferences are still a nightmare for him.

I'm not surprised - I saw one at Halle recently, just after Gael Monfils played a trick shot during his match with Haas. It seemed like Gael had been getting criticism for doing that, and the journalists kept pushing and pushing Richard about it to try and get him to criticise Gael. Richard handled it well, but it was really bad. I think there was maybe one question about Richard's match then 5 about Gael's shot.

I do believe the @richardgasquet1 account is his . And while he says little on it , it is followed by Piatti , Lacoste and Lagardere , as well as Jade Foret . Perhaps it was hacked about the Bar Rafaeli stuff , because that tweet has been deleted .
Still , while I follow the account , I doubt he will ever reveal too much in it . In light of the Haase' threats from gamblers and other trolls who accost these guys I wonder why any celebrity would use a twitter account at all !
My gut feeling is that the ATP is trying to get the players to be more fan friendly - and when Richard made his second attempt at the twitter venture , it had been noted by many bloggers , journalists on twitter that he was the only one in the top 10 without an account. So maybe his publicity
team requested that as much as possible that he try to interract in this way ? I don't know , but it does seem like a possibility .

Cheese and chocolate - well I have never seen Rafa eat , so I don't know what Uncle Toni lets him indulge in - but I do know that Richard enjoys a little chocolate after meals - but only a very small portion . And as long as he is still playing in the tournament he does not drink wine or other alcohol - at least not at IW. The same cannot be said for a few of the others ( Llodra ) and the coaches have a lively evening in the bar after the players have retired to their rooms. No team parties like the French ! They are a very close knit social group . Always looks like they are having fun .

Yes, that sounds likely - especially after Berdych was such a big hit when he started recently, and even Roger's on it now. Sponsors must love it. Nole, Murray, Rafa - they're all brilliant at promoting their sponsors heavily through twitter.

It is a wonderful event . I have been going for years . It is the closest ATP event to my home ( only a short 2 hour drive ) so I go out there for a week with a group of friends.
We get to see great tennis , the weather is lovely , and the hotel has a great pool !
And the fact that we lucked into staying at the same hotel as many of the players makes it an interesting experience.
I never bother them for autographs or pictures at meal time , although some people do . But we have been going there now for about 6 years - seen the french contingent every time - and they recognize us and talk to us now .
It doesn't hurt that my daughter is a beautiful young woman of 22 , the guys have no pbjection to talking with her :)

there are actually several twitter accounts for Richard Gasquet, none of which are verified. one of them could be the real gasquet but until one is verified, i just assume all are impostors (i learned after following many roger federer twitter accounts early on).

More or less the same as in teh artcicle alrad ytranslated by DBR, just one more thing, he is asked if it nerves him when everyine talsk to him about a potential QF, he says, "no, there are much more nerving things in the world, it would only be me who was disppointed in the past. It is only myself putting pressure on me, not the others".

Ermh, Richard, you still have not graspesd that you have fans you suffer with you in your defeats and are happy with your wins. But of course, you are the one most affected.

I'm sure I remember reading quotes from Grosjean about how Richard used to feel huge pressure - as if he was playing for everyone else's expectations - and that they put a lot of work into trying to get him to play only for himself. I'm sure it's that kind of focussed thinking that's making him say that... and not that he forgets us. ;)

Yes, Richard is good practice to listen to. I will be fluent when I can finally understand him. :) It is no wonder he talks like that though - look at the way the journalists have him surrounded and pinned up against the wall. It's ridiculous that players have to put up with that. :(

Here is the interview (in French) with Leconte yesterday, from Eurosport France.

I can only pick out some of this (probably very badly!) so feel free to add corrections/ updates to the translation. :)

http://video.eurosport.fr/tennis/us-open/2013/us-open-2013-gasquet-me-forcer-a-aller-vers-l-avant_vid293050/video.shtml

This was a very important match for Richard. Losing in Paris, to Wawrinka in 5 sets, was very difficult. Here, playing 5 sets was hard and Raonic had a big serve. Also conditions were very humid so he's happy he won.

He practised with Arnaud Clement yesterday. (Tuesday).

Rafa told Richard he’s never experienced humidity like it on the day of the Raonic match. (Rafa also played that night).

The interviewer is impressed that he saved match point, and was so solid and concentrated so well during the match. Richard says it was a very important match, and that his experience of 5 set matches helped him. He said the 3rd set was bad on his part but that he came back well in 4th/ 5th.

He says Ferrer is a very difficult opponent, very strong, and that he will have to come forward and attack.

I wonder how many views that Les Petits As video got after Richard referred to it. I hope they post the whole match. They were both so tiny when they were 13 - their shirts were so big on them.

Below is another video of Richard in Les Petits As - he really was a prodigy. This one is against Dudi Sela and it shows the scoreboard/draw in the beginning. It's so fun to see who was playing - a lot of them have done well in the pros:

This is actually a really good interview in English with Brett Haber of the Tennis Channel. Starting around 3:00, he asked Richard about throwing the socks in the court. The answer was pretty funny. The next question was great as well: it's the first time I've heard him say unequivocally that the early pressure on him was not good and that it had cost him time from his career.

Thanks for posting this. :) Very good interview. Is it just me or is he even looking a lot more relaxed in interviews now??? I think getting over this 4th round "curse", and winning back to back 5 set matches has really liberated him and lifted a lot of weight from his shoulders.

I agree with you about the early pressure stuff - I've seen magazine quotes where he said the early pressure was hard to deal with, but never anything this strong. I'm sure all the expectation and pressure was a huge setback for him. I've actually been worrying that because of his USO results, expectation (and media interest) is really going to increase for him again, when before he could pretty much fly under the radar. At least he is older and better able to cope with that side of things now. He really looks quite comfortable on camera at the moment though, doesn't he? And people are responding to him really well.

The sock thing is funny - he backhands one of them!!! - but at least he made amends and picked them up himself! :)

I agree about Richard seeming more relaxed - the monkey is off his back!

When he talked about the early pressure on him, he usually said "it's not easy", but "it's normal" and it's "no excuse". I'm glad he's acknowledging the detrimental effects of having a country's expectations on his shoulders. He doesn't have to be bitter about it (and he isn't), but I think one must accept these things to be able to move on. I also think it will help the next generation.

Have you seen the entire sock episode? The chair umpire told him he needed to pick them up himself because the ballpersons aren't going to. Richard nodded, said he will. The camera was on the sweat-soaked socks during the entire changeover.

I edited my post above to add more videos.

Absolutely agree with you. At that such a young age, you don't really feel or manifest the pressure so everything may seem hunky-dory but it's at 16 - 18 when it starts to take its toll. I think Richard's problem was that he was too nice. Federer and Agassi were horrible brats during their teenage years and I think that kind of "rebellion" allowed them some release. Richard didn't start truly acting out until 2006 - 2009, a time when a pro should really be consolidating his powers. It was bad timing.

I started following Richard because of his game - all-court, flashy, dazzling. He was inconsistent but I thought it's only a matter of time for someone this preternaturally good. Then he started self destructing and I was dismayed. That he came back from such a setback made me admire him. People always say that he's not tough but to go through what he has in an environment of constant unforgiving competition...there has to be steel inside that man.

Really interesting to see all these videos... not only does he change massively in size/ power over the years, but you can practically see him change from being a happy little kid at 9, who thinks it's fun having the cameras around, to someone who clearly doesn't like the attention and doesn't want to be filmed. He looks very uncomfortable and self-conscious in that Mahut one.

ps. Just posted a link to an article from the online NY Times today (over on the articles thread), where Richard talks a bit more about those early pressures.

People always say that he's not tough but to go through what he has in an environment of constant unforgiving competition...there has to be steel inside that man.

Could not agree more. And through constant media scrutiny and criticism as well. Coming back the way he has over the past few years is just amazing really. :hatoff:
