Thank Goodness No Yucky Grass in Gstaad!

06-22-2005, 04:48 PM
Only 11 more days until Gstaad.

Adios Wimbledon, hola clay!!!!!!!!!!!!!

06-22-2005, 04:57 PM
Glad to see you started the new thread already Nicofan. Must always be looking forward! And I have a good feeling that Nico will find his footing so to speak back on clay. Some ignorant fan called him a Grass Court God and I had to set him straight on that lol! A god but not on grass!

I'm interested to see what happens with the coaching situtuation too. That could give him a boost too.

06-22-2005, 05:02 PM
Glad you set that person straight! Nico, a grass court god? Hmmm...not!! Nico is a clay court player - though he could be a hardcourt player too but doesn't seem to have the confidence there yet - should after winning the Olympics on it! :-)

I posted this on the MSN board - I want Gaby back. Papa Massu needs to pay Gaby anything he wants, promise him anything he wants, and if need be, Nico needs to beg Gaby to come back. Nico needs Gaby. If I were at Wimbledon, I would go myself and beg Gaby to come back!

06-22-2005, 05:18 PM
Vamos Nicolas

I'm so sad

Youll do better next time ;)

Okay, the boys are out in doubles.

Time for Nico to get serious on clay! So nervous for him...he has so many points to defend.

Buena suerte NICO!!

8 more days!

06-26-2005, 06:03 PM
Ohh poor nico.. 400 pts of olympics  and many many more like kitzbuehel

06-26-2005, 06:55 PM
Yup. He has to win or he's in for big problems. Should do well at the summer clay as long as he doesn't got horrid draws. But if he doesn't - huge drop in the rankings. I don't mean to sound negative, but he's really in trouble ranking wise if he doesn't do well this summer on clay.

Bigger drop if he doesn't do well during the same week that the Olympics were last year. Not sure which tournament will be the week the Olympics points go it Cincy? If it is, he's going to have to kick butt - which will be hard because last year at Cincy, he lost in the first round.

And add to that no confidence. No coach. Not comfortable physically yet after the injuries.

I'm afraid that we'll have a JC situation here where he's going to drop so far down, he won't qualify, he won't get wild cards.

Hope he's gone to Gstaad early (if he went back to Chile after he lost doubles yesterday, I will cry and scream). Hope that he's practicing non-stop. I know that I sound mean but this isn't the time for fun, women, and! This is the time for only work, and work only. He has to focus.

06-26-2005, 06:56 PM
BTW - 7 more days. I'm so nervous about these tournaments. He needs every point he can get. Every single point.

06-27-2005, 04:15 AM
As I just posted on the msn board, I'm hopeful because in the last interview I read he sounded like he was going to take charge and face where he's at now. I think losing to Gimelstab may have been an eye operner for him. At least I hope so. Still, this is when he was winning last year and he must repeat some of that success or your fear will materialize Nicofan I know. Hope, hope, hope he will be practicing with other good players out of Wimbly till Gstaad....

Here's an article today in

"Who they have shared closely with Nicolas Massú say that does not walk of very good humor. His fall in the second rounds of Wimbledon front of American Justin Gimelstob clarified that not yet can be shaken of the problems of confidence that have pursued it in a harmful year for the second national racquet, marked by them injured and the bad results.

After losing against the American, the national tennis player summarized his present moment. "I am not with the sufficient force, velocity and confidence to win, above all in the important moments. I lack a lot to be competitive. What more rage gives is me to lose against players to the ones that would gain in normal circumstances. It is not easy to be eaten these routs", the double Olympic champion said.

It is that the Chilean drags already many weeks of frustrations, in a first negative semester that left with injuries that they have impacted in bad results and that they finished for breaking the relation with his coach Patricio Rodriguez.

Today, the "Vampire" is without coach and to the doors to face a very hard phase, in which should renew near the 75% of the points that at present they maintain it in the position 29° of the ranking ATP.

The next tournament that will play Massú will be in Gstaad (Swiss), the last station without defense of units. Later it will leave to Amersfoort, Austria, where should renew semifinals. To the following week should defend the title in Kitzbühel.

With respect al name whose will guide the destinies of Massú, its father has said that only he has been able to talk on the phone with Argentine Gabriel Markus, the name that sounds stronger to happen Rodriguez. Markus supposedly he would be in Wimbledon, nevertheless the illness of his lady him imposibility of traveling to England. It is expected that in the next weeks they can be met in Europe to try to arrive at an arrangement that turns out to be vital for the "Vampire", therefore today more than ever needs someone that help him to recover the land lost."

07-01-2005, 12:56 PM
A couple bits of news.

One, he didn't go back to Chile - he did stay in Europe to practice for the upcoming clay season.

Two, this is from an interview with Fena on Radio Cooperativa. Nice words for Nico.

""Nicolas is going to return"

Fernando González was shown confident in which Nicolas Massú will be able to be recovered totally of the fracture by stress and the tendonitis in the left foot that until today that has made him lack confidence, and that will exhibit again his better level in the professional circuit.

"Never it is easy to return from an injury, and if you return from several is a lot worse still, but Nico nothing more has to be put well and the remainder is thing of time, because he is a great tennis player and has a great mentality. If he does not pass in two months is going to be in six or in a year, but Nicolas is going to return earlier than late", assured the number one of Chile."

07-02-2005, 02:20 PM

Let's go nicoo

07-03-2005, 02:43 PM
Also wanted to add that this past week he was practicing in Barcelona to get ready.

I've had my fingers crossed for a coach from Spain for Nico if he can't get Gaby back. From what I've read, they have some of the best coaches, practice facilities, etc. in Europe. And I think it would be great for him to get a different perspective for awhile.

Don't know anything about this guy from Argentina that's also under consideration except that he used to coach Gaston.

Buena suerta NICO!

And no OOP for Monday yet - just checked.

07-03-2005, 04:31 PM
Franco Davin is a class act - he is a great guy and a great coach. He took Gaston to the Roland Garros title - I would personally be really happy if he began to work with Nico :)

07-04-2005, 12:45 PM
Hope he just goes out and plays his game rather than worrying about points. Easier said than done.

The Chilean tennis player needs to renew the titles of Athens and Kitzbühel, the semifinals of Basilea and Amersfoort, besides a second round in the US Open. Almost nothing. But has faith.

After a disaster semester, with injuries, absences and low actions, Nicolas Massú faces the second part of the year with the armed better sensation to be to take up again the level that a year ago consecrated it as tennis player top ten and Olympic champion.

Nevertheless, the impossibility to obtain a solid mattress of points in the previous weeks, places al vińamarino in the delicate more 80 percent situation to defend of the score that achieved in this period the 2004 and that still maintains it inside the 30 better than the world.

And the panorama is seen dark. In the two following months the Chilean needs to renew the titles of Athens (400) and Kitzbühel (250), the semifinals of Basilea (110) and Amersfoort (75), out of a second round in the US Open. Beyond that the own player assure that his maximum worry is to play again its better tennis, also a good ranking should import him, therefore impedes him to be rival direct of the better tennis players in the preliminary rounds. Otherwise, if you left of the 50 first, perfectly could be matched in a first round of a tournament with Roger Federer or Lleyton Hewitt.

Therefore that Massú did not waste time and remained coaching in Europe to be put physically ready for the mini season that will do on clay in that continent, before travelling to dispute the championships of the American summer.

The national tennis player that has just fallen in the second return of Wimbledon, begins their participation in the ATP of Gstaad, Swiss, a glamorous tournament nailed in the heart of the Alps, where today (9.30 hours of Chile) will face al German Behrend, to whom has beaten in two of the three occasions in which they have been faced. The Russian one Nikolai Davydenko and the Argentine one Gastón Gaudio are the candidates al title.

07-04-2005, 03:11 PM
Looks like its raining in Gstaad - doubt even if it stopped that Nico's match can get in, but we'll have to keep checking.

Really nice interview with Nico from Radio Cooperativa. He really sounds so mature this year....very proud of him! :)

Despite the difficult thing that signified to obtain it, the Chilean Nicolas Massú (30ş) received of very good way his victory on the German Tomas Behrend (82ş) in the first round of the tournament of Gstaad, therefore he assured that he needs to grow in confidence in base to results.

The vińamarino was imposed for 7-6 (4) and 7-6 (3) al German, after which expressed its sensations in dialogue with Al Air Free in Cooperativa.

"I am happy, trying to be each better day, of giving the best of me. I am quite happy by to have won, because this year has been difficult by my health, so everything that be to won for me is important, of the form that be. Always the result al final is what imports and good, I am in second round of Gstaad and would be playing Thursday against (Jan) Hernych", declared.

Massú indicated that is conscious that should face its badly moment, with descent in the ranking included, and to work day by day to leave, for what has a lot of mental force.

"I am in the situation that has touched myself to live, not because have played badly or be I lack of confidence, but because I had a quite complicated injuries, I had an operation in between, and are things that never expected that were going to pass me in the best moment of my career", maintained the Olympic champion of Athens 2004.

"I have surprised myself for the strong thing that I am mentally, me has not affected so much as before, perhaps if I leave this I am going to return stronger, because one enters with more you win. Now the triumphs that obtain are more important, perhaps before had accustomed me to win, now I have to know to live the moment, I am a fighter and I have to try to leave and to look at for ahead", added.

The objectives for the remainder of 2005

Massú avoids to be done too large expectations, only wants to go improving little by little, with the feet in the land.

"My goal this year is to finish possible the best, to go gaining confidence day by day, to feel me well and happy. In these moments I cannot say that I feel incredible, but each day I go feeling better. The good thing is that I go advancing and that leaves me tranquil to be able to raise me al following day with the tranquility that I am doing it well", indicated.

The number two national did not have problems in comparing its season with that of Fernando González (18ş) and notified that is difficult that be able short-term to arrive al level that Fernando has at present.

"Fernando has had a quite different year al my; either for him, that has had a good year. I had in recent years spectacular campaigns also and the unique thing that expect of me in these moments is to play well, I do not know that I can expect of the results", he explained.

"One must be a realist, I lack a lot still, a lot of road and I have to live the day by day. Now, if I arrive al US Open and I do a great welcome tournament be, I to each tournament that go with the mentality to win", he added.

Of all ways and although he does not want to be put very ambitious goals, Massú not to stops being an optimist as for what expects for what reduces of 2005.

"I hope to have a second half of the year as the ones that had in the last two years. It is going to be complicated because perhaps I lost a little ranking, perhaps al final of year I am not going to be seeded, but one must confront the situation and I know that depends a lot of how sits down me and I know that if I am well I can yield and to play even better than before", affirmed.

On the possibility to obtain a new coach after being dissociated of Patrician Rodriguez, the vińamarino insisted that will expect to hire al suitable coach.

"The unique thing that want is to decide with calm and that the person that be with me be the correct one so that he be up again winning tournaments", he argued. (

Hey we've reached over 1000 posts on Nico's board...whoooo hooo!!! :-)

07-07-2005, 05:14 PM
Dear friends in Nico's Forum  thanks for your concern. I couldn't get on here sooner - my office is very close to where one of the bombs went off, - so I was all morning with no mobile phone signal, electricity or Internet connection, - and then it took me over 3 hours to try and get home as we have no Underground trains in London.

I was fine this morning (really calm), - but must admit that now I'm a bit shaky and tearful, - guess it'is shock or something and I'll be OK in a day or so. We Brits are pretty tough :)

Thanks again guys.

07-07-2005, 05:28 PM

Our poor Nico lost 3-6, 2-6.

I don't like Gaston at all anymore...

But Nico had a great tournament - I'm very very very proud of him. :worship:

He's fighting so hard to come back.

Love ya NICO!!! :)

I just watched the match live on Eurosport - it looked very match like this was just "one match too far" for Nico - he seemed a little slow and sluggish on court - I guess it will take a while to get his match fitness and conditioning back to normal.

One thing that worried me a little................he seemed to be holding his back a little - as though he had some sort on injury  However - he didn't call for a trainer or have a medical timeout so perhaps it was just a little muscle spasm caused by tiredness. That's what our commentators were saying and I hope they were right. It's been a great tournament for Nico though - congrats to him :worship: And I like Gaston so I hope he goes on to win this tournament now.

Ah, our poor boy lost today!

Well, I'm not disappointed because our boy is fighting to recover his best shape and make a semifinal in a important tournament is a big step, I'm so proud of him :worship:

Keep up fighting Nico, the sweet days will back soon

And I really hope that Nico doesn't have a big problems in his back :)

Thanks for the update Rosie - poor sweetie

Sounds like Nico was tired. I hope he doesn't have a problem with his back, but I've seen him do that when he was tired so hopefully its just that.

Hopefully he'll rest for a couple of days - probably will go back to Barcelona to train next week while DC is going on, and then head to Amersfoot.

This tournamnet was definitely a step in the right direction - some of the other tournaments he was losing to people that he normally wouldn't have lost too - this time, he beat them. Next step, getting back to where he's competitive against the Gaston's of the circuit. Which he will. Just will take some more time.

Like Rosie said our Nico looks a little slow and his backhand doesn't work in all ... Nico has problem with the long points, I think he was a bit tired ;)

Like everyone else I am so proud of how Nico has done in this tournament! He may not be back to his previous level but he surely is on his way back! Very happy and positive about how he will do these next weeks. :yeah: Oh yeah, and the black is the best yet IMO! Now, if Addias had a black and sleeveless shirt...

Well nico was tired  and like fergie said :p .. his forehand doesn't work..

The Gstaad site said that Nico had a have a shot before the match in order to play - depending on the version something with his leg or hip.

I hope its nothing serious.

Poor Nico.

I've looked everywhere to get an update but nada.

So if anyone hears anything, let us know.

He can't be hurt again. I feel like crying.

Points question:

How many points does Nico get for getting to the SF here?

Points question:

How many points does Nico get for getting to the SF here?

I don't know how many points Nico gets but according to Judio's provisional ranking post he'll be ranked 29th on Monday.

And I do hope too that it's nothing serious  I did not like the reports on the Gstaad site, but it's strange that there is no information on it at any of the Chilean sites.

This is from the ATP official site:-

Points and Money Breakdown

W 35 €58,700

F 24 €34,500

SF 15 €20,330

QF 8 €11,960

R16 3 € 7,025

R32 1 €4,130

SO I guess that means Nico will get 15 points for losing in today's semi-final.

Rosie - 15 is for the champions race. Was thinking about the regular ranking.

Olimpo - I think its strange too that there's nothing on the Chilean sites. They're usually so good at reporting things, but not on this. And that's good Nico will go up to 29.

He needs all the points he can get having to defend the 400 Olympics points and the points for winning Kitzbuhel last year - don't know how many that was. I usually don't care becuase I don't really care where he's ranked - I'd like him no matter where he was in the rankings. But he has soooo many points to defend here that I can't help be concerned about it now. And I think he is too because he's talked about that if he goes down too far in the rankings, he won't be seeded in tournaments and that makes it harder in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Sorry Nico - I'm not so good at Entry Rankings because they alter every week in accordance with last year and this year's calendar and it's far too complicated for me - Judio and Nitsansh are the experts here!!!

Anyway- here is my translation of an article from "La Tercera" today, and the link for those who prefer to read it in the orignal Spanish:-,0,3308_5832_147876508,00.html

Massú recognised that to play three matches after so much time has passed was hard.

Nicolas Massú: "It was clear that that my body needs to be stronger"

Nicolas Massú was not content with his campaign in Gstaad, but yet was calm, because his aim was to begin to get results that have been lacking this season for the country's Number 2 player. And also he has learnt lessons, mainly in his match yesterday against the Argentine Gastón Gaudio.

"It is a long time since I played four matches in the same week and I noticed that. My muscles and my body are still adapting to hard matches, and today made it clear that my body needs to be stronger. One is never satisfied, no matter how big an advance there has been during this week ", said the man from Vińa de Mar. He got to the semifinals in Switzerland and tomorrow will be in position 28 on the Entry System (he was 30ş), amd will have equal points with the Spaniard Carlos Moyá. Massú, sho was injured for three first months of the year, added that "I leave here sad to lose, but I must see the positive side; I am playing better every day, but my body lacks match fitness. Anyway what happened last week is a great advance. Thank God that I can begin to think that I'm regaining my level little by little, both my tennis and my physical strength, and this allows me to be calmer mentally. In the past it has been very difficult for me to concentrate ", explained " El Vampiro ".

After the match Gaudio said, "Today, Nicolas was not the same player that he was last year. Her is still recovering from his injuries. I ad,it I thought the match would be more difficult". Today Gaudio will play in the final against Stanislas Wawrinka (69ş ATP).

I can't figure out the points either, and I don't believe in math ;) so I don't even bother! Kind of a crazy system.

No mention of having to get a shot in his leg/hip - he's such a sweetie, I hope everything is okay with him.
