Rogi was such an innocent then... so sweet and young at 19... I remember him crying when he sat down... I just love to see Rogi crying for joy at Wimby! Let's hope he does it again this year! ;)

I also saw an interview w him after the upset... one of the first times I ever heard him speak English -- I was impressed! Still am...

Silvy, hope your luck is with him once again in Wimbledon :) Roger needs it badly.

Thanks Stevens  That is a great video :bounce:

Roger was so young back then, so genuine a boy. I couldn't help laughing big again and again when seeing him stop his steps suddenly to imitate what Sampras was doing to bow to the audience. That is too funny and cute  How can this boy not be loveable  Comparatively, I even felt a little bit pain in my heart seeing the Roger now, too much pressure on this still very young and loveable guy, and he has to burden it all by himself  He won't be that Roger again :bigcry::p But I know I can't ask for more :p

Just go for your 3rd Wimbledon in a row Roger!!! We all know you can do it. God bless you :worship:

Thank you for the video, Stevens!

You guys know what I was thinking while watching the video? How nice and polite he was to Pete after the match!!!

He just tumbled over on the court once and then immediately went to the net and shook hands with Pete. And he wrapped up his stuffs even while crying(!). He didn't keep Pete waiting a second even if the crowds continued to send him a standing ovation when he was walking out of the court...

Anyone else could've showed more emotions and more gestures of joy for victory and taken time to celebrate themselves on the court, because they had just defeated the legend! But he just didn't. I've heard him saying that at that time he thought it would've been disrespectful and impolite to Pete if he would've kept him waiting for him. Oh, boy, how nice of you!

Now look at him. He is the incomparable king but still nice and polite. Even when he lost matches against the youngsters like Gasquet or Nadal(in the same age to him when he defeated Pete), he embraced them and showed them the same smile. Compare him to Pete who failed to show a grace of a champion. He didn't smile, looked full of disappointment and had a long face after the loss. :o

Sometimes it makes me sad and angry when I have a feeling that Rogi is so nice and polite that he allows media or uninsightful people to treat him unproperly(e.g. the photo shot with Nadal at FO :o ). But that IS him and I love just how he is.

Just hope he keeps letting his rackets talk on the court and staying how he is and what he is as long as possible  .

Good Luck to Roger, hope he does well, ok i'm trying to be supportive and not expect too much but i have to say that damn i hope he wins this thing, and i hope i get to see him :)

It's kind of a tradition and an etiquette in the Center Court of the Wimbledon. They took a bow to the Prince of Kent and other royalties in the VIP box which was located near the exit. I guess Roger was so excited that he forgot to bow. Whatever the reason, still so cute.......makes me smile. :inlove:

Ok so will Roger get Hewitt or Nadal in his half of the draw? Is it 50/50 chance which one he gets? Even though Nadal isn't great on grass I'm hoping it's Hewitt. Roger basically owns Hewitt and has beaten him at Wimbledon. Nadal on the other hand has some weird effect on Roger and Roger never seems to play well against him. I'd love to see him enact revenge against Nadal but I'm not confident he could do it!

hm I don't see any way how Nadal could defeat Roger on grass. He hasn't the game yet to challenge Roger on grass even if he just plays "normal" imho.
But although I wish for a Roger/Nadal semi - I don't expect Nadal to come that far.

Nadal won't make the 2nd week likely. His game and skills are not for grass/indoors/faster harcourts. Roger just better be sharper than last year if he meets Andy in the final. Draw for Wimbledon

Thursday, 16 June, 2005

Defending champion, Roger Federer and French Open winner Rafael Nadal could be on course for a repeat of their Roland Garros semi-final after today's draw. Federer - seeded first will play Paul-Henry Mathieu in the first round but could avenge his Paris defeat against the Spanish 19 year-old on Centre Court.

Elsewhere, the 2004 runner-up, Andy Roddick is seeded to play Lleyton Hewitt in the semi-finals but could play the British No.1 Tim Henman in the semi-finals. Henman will play Finland's Jarkko Nieminen in the first round.

Most of the top seeds avoided the 'dangerous floaters' of the draw, including Greg Rusedski and Queen's runner-up Ivo Karlovic, although Australian Open champion Marat Safin faces a tough opening match against Paradorn Srichaphan in the first round and could meet Mark Philippoussis - a runner-up at Wimbledon in 2003 - in the second.

More soon.

Draw for Wimbledon

Thursday, 16 June, 2005

The Draw for the 2005 Championships has thrown up some intriguing match-ups, including possible all-Williams match in the fourth round between Venus and Serena Williams and a likely second round encounter between the 2003 runner-up Mark Philippoussis and this year's Australian Open champion, Marat Safin.

Roger Federer starts off his campaign against Paul-Henri-Mathieu. Meanwhile, his opponent in last year's final, Andy Roddick, will face Jiri Vanek in the first round. Roddick is seeded to play Tim Henman in the quarter-final, with the winner possibly facing French Open winner, Rafael Nadal.

Big difference here and in the other on I posted above. ??? So, could Nadal be facing Roger or Andy in the semi???

Nadal and Hewitt will take a los in which half they get, don't know if it allready been decided.
And Roddick could face Karlovic in the 2nd which also is really tough.
But a nice draw for Roger :yeah:

Why is everybody looking at Nadal this GS? He has achieved nothing on grass.
So Roger plays Paul-Henri Mattieu, not an easy draw but it shouldn't be a problem to our friend Rogi!

Ok I have just seen the full draw. It is an OK draw methinks, although a possibility to meet Pim2 in the semis does make the superstitious side of me a bit nervous. But this is Wimbledon, the holy ground, perfect place to counter the birthday mambo jumbo ;)

So his path probably will come out like:
1st - PHM ----------- Can be a tough assignment but ROgi should go through in the end.
2nd - Minar/Tabara. Rogi has met Minar and he gave Rogi a lot of trouble early this year. Tabara I haven't seen before, have they met before?
3rd - Benneteau/Kiefer. Most probably Kiefer, he is a very good grass player but Rogi shold have the edge.
4rd - Ferrero/Mayer
qf - Pim2 (yikes  )
sf - Hewitt/Ancic/Safin ......... will be a tough one for sure

But all in all it is an ok draw. As long as Rogi playing well, he should go through. But have to admit I am super excited and nervous now.

Good luck Rogi, you can do it! :bounce:

Roger has quite a decent draw this time, but actually, whatever draw he gets, it doesn't really matter much if he delivers, here on grass.

I think Rogi has a good draw. Ancic isnīt playing well on grass this season and Hewitt isnīt in form either. Joachim shouldnīt be a problem because he totally droped after a very good start into the season. I would be very dissapointed if Roger fails to defend his title.

I don't like the draw. PimPim/Ancic can be very dangerous on grass. He'll have to be sharp from the first go, because even Mathieu/Minar/ Kiefer/ Gonzalez/Enqvist can bring unpleasant surprises.

The good thing is every time I'm not excited about his draw, he wins. :)

Stevens Point
06-16-2005, 03:55 PM
For me the difficulty of the draw doesn't matter much, because he has to beat everybody on the way anyway to defend his title. And, I am sure he is very capable of doing that. The draw wasn't also easy for Hamburg, Roland Garros, you name it. Because he survived those difficult draws, we have current Roger here. I guess there is no easy draw for anyone.

Stevens Point
06-16-2005, 04:24 PM
A "little" info about Mathieu.

This year so far 15 wins 13 losses, currently ranked 60 in entry system. Head to head with Roger 1-0 for Roger, they met priviously in Rome 2003 (clay) and Roger won in straight sets.

Beat him again, Roger!!!!

Non the less - I will be very nervos every time he plays - but who really isnīt,itīs part of the deal!

For me the difficulty of the draw doesn't matter much, because he has to beat everybody on the way anyway to defend his title

Still, the luck of the draw does play it's role.

I remember one year when Sampras was down a set and a break against Flip and looked absolutely helpless. All of a sudden Flip's knee broke down and he was forced to retire. Pete, of course, went on to win the Championship.

I have never seen him on grass, but I don't really think that Mathieu can be qualified as a threat to Roger

Nadal won't make the 2nd week likely. His game and skills are not for grass/indoors/faster harcourts. Roger just better be sharper than last year if he meets Andy in the final. I WANT DOMINATION TO START UP AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT THE FUCKING MEDIA TO LEARN AFTER THIS SUMMER THAT THERE IS NO RIVAL. NADAL IS JUST SIMPLY THE NEW MUSTER ON CLAY AND NOTHING MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He shouldn't be a big problem for Roger. But he's a more difficult assignment than Dudi Sela or Alex Bogdanovic (last year's 1st round opponent).

This is from Tennis magazine. The article was written before the draw came out.

" In ' 96 Sampras lost to Richard Krajicek in straight sets. This year, that bill could be filled by Joachim Johansson. As of May, Federer has never faced the 6-foot-6 Swede, who owns the record for the most aces in a match(51). Add a huge forehand and a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon last year, and "Pim-Pim" will be dangerous."

I hope Roger knows how to play Jo. He hasn't played him in a singles match, but he faced him in doubles match in Halle just a week ago on grass and won the match, so maybe he learned how to deal with his serves from that match or at least got some ideas. Will Jo be able to reach QF?? That is also a big question, considered that he isn't really in shape. Well, we'll see....

Kim Clijsters wants Roger to win! Wonder how Lletyon feels about that? :D

http://sport.independent.co.uk/tennis/story.jsp?story=647636

Winner of the men's singles championship this year? I keep my fingers crossed for Roger [Federer]. I've known him for a long time. I played with him in juniors. Roger is very down to earth, and I just love how much he's stayed himself after his success and how much he's involved in charity work. I think he's the best thing that could have happened to men's tennis.

Isn't it so nice when other people post such stats for us so we don't have to?

Federer & grass: 30 matches undefeated and counting
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At this moment Roger Federer has won 30 matches on grass in a row.
Since his defeat in the first round at Wimbledon in 2002 against Mario Ancic he hasn't lost a single match on the surface. Is this actually a record? Players like Connors, Borg, McEnroe, Becker and Sampras also have an impressive grass winning history. But have they also managed to win as many matches in a row as Roger has done untill now?

Here's the list of all matches he has won the past three years on grass. Four players received a bagle from Roger: Bogdanovic, Falla, Fish and Hewitt. And only six players succeeded in winning one single set against Federer:

- Fish (6-4 at Wimbledon 2004)
- Hewitt (7-6 at Wimbledon 2004)
- Roddick (6-4 at Wimbledon 2004)
- Safin (7-6 at Halle 2005)
- Soderling (7-6 at Halle 2005)
- Vicente (6-4 at Halle 2003)
- Youzhny (6-4 at Halle 2003)

"When I warmed up on the outside courts everybody came into the grounds and were wishing me good luck. It was a lot of fun and I was really surprised how they cheered for me. I guess in England they are very friendly and nice and I definitely enjoyed that."

We Brits like you too Roger!! Good luck on Wednesday!

It was a good match from Roger, definitely. Served really well, returned well when he needed (because he wasn't handling Mathieu's first serve all that well all the time, but then.. it's a pretty good serve), and was consistent and that was enough. Mathieu is agressive, but isn't consistent so I think that's why we didn't see Roger many times at the net trying to finish points quickly. That's wise, he didn't waste energy and didn't give Mathieu any chance apart from that break in the 1st set. That's good.

Congrats and onto the next round! Cmon/Hopp/Allez/Vamos, Rogi!
Please, win more comfortably than in Dubai, Roger! :scared:

That's great. I'm glad he's a favorite of the crowd as well. He really should, winning two times in a row and being so nice to everyone and especially towards the event. He just loves it, Wimbledon has to love him back! Great! :D

Maria Sharapova and Roger Federer: Court Royalty
Monday June 20, 2:08 pm ET
Wimbledon Defending Champs Sport Golden Touch

BEAVERTON, Ore., June 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sometimes, for the creme de la creme of court royalty, only gold will do. Every time Wimbledon defending champions Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova take the court at this year's tournament, Nike is honoring their achievements with regal, one-of-a-kind gold footwear.
http://www.newscom.com/db/PRN/prnphotos/docs/046/935.thm

In their quest for another Wimbledon title, Federer and Sharapova will play on the grass courts at the All England Club wearing an exclusive golden version of the Nike Air Zoom Vapor Speed. The distinctive look comes from a rare gold material that contains 24-karat gold droplets surrounded by micro- prisms for strength and ultimate reflectivity.

The same 24-karat gold material was used to make the golden track spikes made famous by Michael Johnson during his historic run to set the World Record in the 400 meters at the Sydney Games in 2004. The remaining material had not been used until now.

The golden material appears on the all-white Nike Air Zoom Vapor Speed throughout the upper and on the back heel, where Federer and Sharapova's names are featured. In the spotlight and in the flash of photographer's cameras, the unique Nike Air Zoom Vapor Speed will deliver a glittering 600 candle-watts of power.

Nike innovation and the regality of gold -- only fitting for two of the brightest stars in tennis.

-- Ten pairs of the golden Nike Air Zoom Vapor Speed shoes were made for
each player to wear throughout the two weeks of Wimbledon.
-- The estimated price for each pair of golden shoes is $500.
-- Considering that the golden material used in Johnson's, Sharapova's and
Federer's shoes is no longer available, the new golden court shoes are
truly priceless.

Still am...

I can't get that link to work. It sounds like you are talking about the Wimbledon match with Roger and Sampras, 2001. I have that one on tape. I was surprised when I watched it over that Roger broke down and cried after beating Sampras. I didn't remember that when I saw it live originally.

I think he's been a favourite of the Wimby crowd since he beat Pete Sampras in 2001 and cried .. so we were disappointed that he went out in the 1st round in 2002. And crying his eyes out in 2003 just about sealed him into our affections. You can tell that everyone (tennis fans, journalist, TV commentators, wants him to win Wimby for the 3rd time ... we'll have a good cry together! :bigcry:

I found this piece on the BBC teletext site - they have a "daily diary" thread:

"Down at Aorangi practice court all eyes were on defending champion, Roger Federer, already in the 2nd set.

The 2002 champion, Lleyton Hewitt was on the next court, and during a drinks break at the net, the Australian could not resist a glance over at the Swiss.

Rafael Nadal had more than a passing interest too, stopping to lean on the fence to watch him on the way out.

But figuring out a way to beat Federer won't be easy - he looked sharp in all areas of his game".

Kiefer next, eh? He seems to play really well on fast surfaces, but truly I don't see Federer being so troubled after their Indian Wells (or was it in Miami?), although that first game of their match was probably one of the best games ever played by someone and was Kiefer who won it.

Good luck next round and keep cruising!

I saw whole match against Minar. Well, Rogi Played good enough as early rounds. Minar just hit hard, (ace or miss type) so there were very few rally they did. I think that's why Rogi looks a bit struggle to find his rhythm. But Finally, Rogi found it, and Minar lost the way. Minar can't be Rogi's rival. Rogi looks comfortable on grass. and it's beautifullllllllllll! :D

He pulled through - that's all that matters - In fact this game was good in a way, to release some tension for Roger. He knows, he hasn't played nearly his best tennis, but he raised his lvl again at the important moments, at the end of the 4th set. :yeah: - I think those 4 games will give him more confidence as they'll stuck more in his mind than the 2nd set TB. :)

That's true. It's irrelevant if he loses one set here if he has other points to look at in the same match that makes him feel good about the way he played. He didn't play his best, but definitely wasn't bad. He was inconsistent with his serving and certainly with his returns - missed some 'easy' 2nd serve returns. He was too tentative in the TB and got tight during one or two moments, but was able to cool it down and play some fantastic tennis in 3rd set and at the end of the 4th.

Good match altogether, props to Kiefer also. He played well, although was also inconsistent.

Good luck in the next round, Rogi! I'm sure he's more relieved now and is confident about his match against Ferrero!

Good match to get through although I didn't see it- sometimes a so-so performance against a dangerous floater early in the draw is what is needed for a top player to raise his game for the later stages of the event. Kiefer is no pushover on a grass court anyway and I seem to remember he beat Roger on grass at one point and the first time Roger won Halle he beat Kiefer in the final in 3 difficult sets.

And by the way I am back from camping everyone- will be flying back to Zurich today and arriving there Sunday evening CET in time to see Roger take on Juanqui on Monday :wavey:

I see Andy Roddick gets another unseeded player in the 4th round. Anyone who says his draw is tougher than Roger's is just talking crap. Yeah, Gasquet might be tough and Andy Murray is playing well. But still every player left on Roger's side of the draw is a seeded player. So he certainly won't have an easy road to the finals.

I wish someone other than Patric McEnroe and Cliff Drysdale called his matches though. PMac is more cautious and Drydale thinks Roger's the best thing ever. So you have Drysdale saying Roger played a clean match and then PMac saying this was a "minor scare" and a wakeup call for Roger. OK which is it? And I wish they'd quit with this business about who fears Roger. As if everyone is supposed to melt out there when Roger's on the other side of the net. Keifer's a solid player and has beaten Roger before, and on grass too. This idea that everyone is "scared" to play Roger is ridiculous. Often times guys step it up when playing him because #1 they have nothing to lose and #2 they'd love to be the one beats him because his losses are so few.

I see NBC has decided to show Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova on tape. No Roger. :( I can understand Sharapova. But Roddick? Yeah he's American but I don't think the rating would be higher for his match than if the showed Roger. Plus Roger's match had more drama in it. Andy's was quite routine. I suppose they already decided what to show before the day started. But still....anyone wonders why Roger isn't a household name in America, this is why. Roger's #1 in the world, the best player in the world, playing at the best tournament, defending champ. I don't care what country he's from they should show his match on national TV. :(

People are ignoring guys like Ancic, Gasquet, Gonzalez...

Meanwhile Hewitt isn't looking so solid to me... and Pandy, well he is managing but not brilliant either...

Looks like the Murray/Nalbandian match is going to a 5th set. So Serena won't be out there for a while. Maybe NBC will show some of Roger's match to fill time. But they'll probably show Lindsay Davenport instead.

In comparison with Pandy and Hewitt, Roger is looking just fine. It's the dark horses they've got to be careful of. Gasquet certainly is on Roddick's side, and I think Ancic is on Roger's. I didn't see Roger's match but it sounds like he did play some beautiful shots and had double the winners to UE's. I think had he played a 4th set like he did the 3rd the lost set wouldn't matter. It's just that he came close to losing the 4th set and to me that was the real scare. I did see the very end after Rog won and the crowd gave him a very warm reception. They sure love Roger. I think the only one to get bigger applause is Andy Murray.
