Novak is a class player guys and plays above his usual level in Davis Cup. He can destroy other fine players in DC like Sampras, Henman, and Escude. Davydenko shouldn't be much of a problem. Now if Safin was playing then there would a clear class difference, just the other way. But he isn;t. I have a Czech background and kinda want them to do well, but I also love the games of Safin and Kafelnikov and wish them much success this year in all competition. So i;m kinda torn.

I think, we have to bank on Youzhnyi beating Novak. That's our best bet to get another point. Therefore , Youzhnyi hve to rest tomorrow. It could be that by picking Matveev, Tarpishev actually lost the tie. Matveev is pretty much useless in this situation. We'd need Okhovski. Good news, Stepanek will not be that fresh on Sunday. But now, I think, we are bound to play Kafelnikov-Davydenko in dubs, and than depending on outcome play either Davydenko or Zhenya in the fifth rubber, unless it is dead.

I was right... Misha did come back. But Russia will still lose 2-3

Chloe le Bopper
02-07-2003, 10:19 PM
I think it will come down to the doubles, as I suspect that Mikhail will beat Jiri again.

In which case I'm leaning towards the Czech Republic as well...

ys
02-07-2003, 10:47 PM
I think it will come down to the doubles, as I suspect that Mikhail will beat Jiri again.

Youzhnyi has to beat Jiri, because it is out of question, that Russia would take two other ties. I, however, consider Russian chances to win doubles or second Sunday singles as about 25%. Which put Russian chances at about 45% IF Youzhnyi beats Jiri, and that's a big IF.

There is, however, one other minor detail, which could be unimportant, but could play a role. Stepanek was tired, very tired, and it is a strange situation that this time Russia has more depth in singles - normally any other country would have had more depth than Russia, but not now. So, Czechs has to rely on both their singles players being healthy, because their doubles players are not all rounders, who haven't played singles for ages. So, the question is, whether Stepanek completely recovers by Sunday.

Strangely, now everything seems to come to the question, what is real form of Yevgeny.. We can't play Youzhnyi in doubles, and Davydenko, by Tarpishev words, does have stamina problems. Which pretty much means playing Kafelnikov in the fifth rubber..

Kafelnikov/Youzhny def. Damm/Suk 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

Surprisingly comfortable in the end, although when you consider that the Czechs led with a break at 3-2 in the third set and lost four games in a row, they only have themselves to blame... This certainly improves Russia's chances greatly, particularly with Youzhny first up to play Novak on the final day; the pressure's entirely on Jiri's shoulders, and Youzhny did win their last match at the AO convincingly.

ys
02-08-2003, 06:10 PM
Relatively easy win. And not that Youzhny will be dead tired after less than three hours of doubles.. Very surprising result. Of course, Kafelnikov probably is the best currently active claycourt doubles player ( who else win 3 RGs in doubles ), but Youznhy is doubles rookie, and they teamed up for the first time. Perhaps, Williams-sisters-like effect, when superior power of two superior singles players prevails over a better teamwork.

marra horra
02-08-2003, 06:17 PM
Novak was still tired when he last played Youzhny. No chance of that this time. Though Misha's first title came on clay, i still reckon Novak is his better on the surface. And Novak has rallied from 2-1 down before in Davis Cup, though Bohdan then messed up a very winnable match against Santoro (QF last year vs France away).

ys
02-08-2003, 06:22 PM
I agree, still everything is possible. But now it is close to 50/50.. Czechs are favourites in both rubbers, but they have to win both of them..

Sjengster
02-08-2003, 06:24 PM
Yes, Novak does still have the winning record and I do actually want the Czechs to win, so if he takes it to the final rubber all the better... have Stepanek and Davydenko ever played each other? I seem to remember they did recently, but I don't recall who won.

Bubble
02-08-2003, 06:40 PM
Let's hope Misha will win his rubber so that Davydenko will play a dead 5th rubber.

If the Czechs manage to even up the score, I think Yevgeny may play the 5th rubber to clinch the tie. He seems to be playing quite well in the doubles.

he played really badly two sets and a half, was trying to hit a winner off every shot and made a lot of errors, also he was playing many drop shots that were effective at first but then were too predictable. Then in the middle of the third he started playing his usual tennis and was very close to winning the set but got unlucky in the end.

Ok.... I give up on Radek. Double break up in 4th and then he loses the plot. This guy is SO frustrating; beats Guga and then plays hideous against Hewitt in the next round.
I guess the Russian has the better stamina after all. Well at least that means the QF will be compelling. Argentina trying to get revenge on Russia. But if Safin is back by then, it could be a second title in a row! And Youzhny is brilliant on clay - he beat Canas last year.

Congrats to Nikolai for winning such a huge match and keeping Russia's Davis Cup hopes alive! :bounce:

It's time Kafelnikov was kept to just playing doubles. His singles play in Davis Cup has slipped drastically!

Udachi Russia! :bounce:

It's clay, baby, it's clay. When they play one of the next ties indoors, he'll play singles, you'll see. Yevgeny has never been doing anything well in those early season clay ties, would win only if played someone who hates clay as much as himself, like Kratochvil...

So now it's off to Argentina in Argentina :)

As an Argentina supporter, I can't say that I'm overly relieved about this tie as I know full well that Safin could march in and win the whole damn thing himsef...

Yes, Becca, that tie will be effectively a likely final for Russia. If we do beat Argies, than in semis it is Spain on fast carpet in September - not really a piece of cake, but still a tie with the only likely result, And then the final with someone at home, unless it is teh Swiss. But the toughest part is the next tie. If we beat Argie, we'll be odds-on favourites to defend.
