Mardy Fish's prognosis: 5-0 for USA  PMac said the same. Cocky assholes.

At least Goran had the decency to say he doesn't want to predict anything, and gave both teams a 50-50 chance, with a slight edge to Croatia because it's at home.

Oh please..... No need for a petty revenge scenario. at least not so soon. I want Goran and co to have a decent year! It might be time out soon for the former Wimby champ, as well as the greatest player ever in Sampras. So we should be rooting for these guys. Anyway, though Spain lost in America they still defeated Sampras against all the odds, and then the unfortunate injury to Corretja killed off the tie. Now that its a full strength Spanish side, it's not really right to call it a straight revenge. LAst year it was just Corretja and Robredo. Now there are 3 top tenners all of a sudden.

It's not all about revenge. ;) We're all selfish in that we want to see our faves on tv, which very rarely happens in Davis cup. For me, it could only happen if Spain play Croatia, and for Leo and other Americans, if Spain plays USA.

But I would have cheered for Croatia anyway.

Okay. I confess i'm really lucky and have coverage of all the TMS and Grand Slams for most of the playing day. Also have been to Wimbledon's show courts. I do appreciate it all believe me.

Too bad how self-centred America is in its DC coverage, but then its every country - Croatia, UK (BBC = Tim + Greg), USA, France..

On another issue, it makes sense that the Croats win because indoor carpets are their best surface, and they need confidence from something like this to maintain a good ranking. It would be funny to see Croatia have more players in the top 50 than the much more populous Britain.

You're lucky about TMS. Eurosport doesn't have the rights to cover those or Wimbledon for that matter. :(

I understand that other countries may not want to show DC ties that don't pertain to them, although I do think they should all show at least the DC final.

I would actually like to see more British players in the top 50. Tennis has always been huge in Croatia and in Yugoslavia before that. Boban Zivojinovic and Goran Ivanisevic are legends. I don't know what happened to GB, why there are no prospects or promising young players. :(

It was a brief interview on Croatian tv. Yes, I'm SURE. When asked what his prognosis for this tie was, Mardy Fish said "5-0 for USA" with an arrogant sneer on his face, turned around, and walked away from the reporter. I swear to God, I'm not making this up. PMac said the same thing in his interview.

While James Blake said that while he always comes into a tie believing they will win, we'll see what happens. Now THAT's how you answer a question like that. Not even a hint of a 5-0 wipeout, or the attitude of "we'll wipe the court with your asses 'cause we're the almighty Americans". I love James. He really is ultra classy. He applauded several of Mario's shots during the match.

Chloe le Bopper
02-08-2003, 10:18 AM
Yes James is fabulous. James is also a might bit better educated than Mardy (and Pat?), I might add. Those years at Harvard certaintly aren't hurting him :D

And I wouldn't worry about Mardy too much - seeing as he was made to eat his words by Ivan, that's enough.

Chloe le Bopper
02-08-2003, 10:20 AM
I really hope that James can get himself into the top 15 this year, and keep up the good Davis Cup results - he might not be having as much success as Roddick is, but he's a far better spokesman for the sport IMO.

That said, I think that he is a better spokesman for the sport over most players - I only mentioned Roddick seeing as they are compatriots and all.

Layla
02-08-2003, 10:23 AM
I don't worry about Mardy, I just can't stand him. Anyone who can threaten an umpire and say "I'm gonna get you later" (paraphrasing because I forgot his exact wording) has lost ALL my respect, and a lack of education is not an excuse for being a bully.

I couldn't agree with you more. :) I hope he makes it into top 15 as well. He certainly has the game for it. If he plays like he did yesterday, Ivan will have to play the match of his life to beat him.

Chloe le Bopper
02-08-2003, 10:30 AM
Well I wouldn't say Mardy has a lack of education - just when compared to Blake ;) I'm pretty sure that Mardy finished highschool.

He's just inexperienced and his brattiness showed that day - he'll grow out of it eventually.

But that doesn't mean you have to like him ;)

Goodness knows what this is going to do to Blake and Fish's confidence tomorrow, they really should have had it... the fact that they were in such a winning position shows that they are certainly a good doubles pair, but equally the eventual loss shows that perhaps the US would have been better off with a more experienced, specialist team.

I suspect Ljubicic will finish it off against Blake, but if he doesn't then the Americans are still in with a chance...

Layla
02-08-2003, 04:36 PM
Oh the Americans definitely still have a chance, but I particularly want Mario to win his match. :)

Dina
02-08-2003, 04:44 PM
how big of a choke job was it??

Sjengster
02-08-2003, 04:46 PM
Hmm, Ancic-Fish could be a difficult one to call, neither of them have any hugely overwhelming weapons to speak of and they're both young and new at this level.

Blake and Ljubicic, on the other hand - well, if Ljubicic serves Jamesy off the court that's the one way he'll win, but off the ground Blake has by far the better shots. I shudder when comparing the sharp smack of his forehand to Ivan's ridiculously elaborate, looping backhand...

Layla
02-08-2003, 04:48 PM
I would definitely not call it a choke job. It was a high quality match from both parties. Goran and Ivan simply began to play better. They had chances in the first two sets as well, but never converted them. Goran and Ivan are famous for being tough. You can never count them out. You should've seen them against Argentina. :)

If Blake plays like he did against Mario (brilliantly) then I doubt he will be served off the court, especially considering Ivan hit 16 double faults in his match againt Fish. True, he served 30 aces as well, but 16 DFs is a bit extreme.

Dina
02-08-2003, 04:54 PM

hopefully James can beat Ivan then Fish will...well i don't really care about him;)

Sjengster
02-08-2003, 05:00 PM
Yes, 16 double faults is an awful lot... I guess Ljubicic knew he could get away with it against Fish, whose first-serve percentage was I believe actually lower than his throughout the match. He won't have that luxury against Blake.

No doubt about it, overall Blake is much the more aggressive player even if he doesn't have Ljubicic's serve. I do hope he does take it to the final rubber, since it would be rather fitting to have a match where the serve wasn't actually that crucial to the win.

marra horra
02-08-2003, 05:13 PM
Well on paper Juan Ignacio Chela is much better off the ground as well. And Ivan owns him. So who knows. Got here late and just read through the whole thread. As soon as i got to the tiebreak i knew croatia had won! Ivan is for me a more enjoyable player than blake when he's on, dunno why.

LOL, this IS Croatia vs. USA we're talking about. ;) Both share an undying love for huge serves. Mario's serving wasn't all that great against Blake. He served only 2 aces compared to 4 DFs. Hopefully he can play like he did in the 3rd set, not the first two. Mario is inexperienced, but a win like this could give him a huge confidence boost. This seems to be the time of young DC heros.

Fish's first serve percentage was 48 % in his match against Ljubicic.

02-08-2003, 05:18 PM
good luck ivan tomorrow! take the pressure off mario's back

also good luck to mario if he must play the final rubber or good luck to lovro or goran (altho i doubt he'll play) if the last match is a dead rubber!

Sjengster
02-08-2003, 05:20 PM
True, but when you compare Chela's serve with Ljubicic's serve, you can see why Ivan is so comfortable facing him... he knows that even if he were to drop his own serve, he'd still have a big opportunity to break back. Mind you, Chela has something of a mental block with Ljubicic; the last time they played in Paris, when he was down break point in the first set, he actually left a winning shot from Ljubicic that he could easily have reached, almost as if his mind wasn't on the court.

I know Blake doesn't have the biggest serve either, but he has that huge weapon of a forehand that Chela doesn't; Chela is consistent, Blake is explosive, and as I say too many of Ljubicic's shots have this 'twirly' quality about them that means they loop up in the air and don't have any penetration through the court.

U.S. team upset with 'lack of class' of some fans

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reuters

ZAGREB, Croatia -- The United States team criticized both the crowd and match oficials after James Blake and Mardy Fish lost the doubles rubber on Saturday in their Davis Cup first-round tie against Croatia.

Goran Ivanisevic and Ivan Ljubicic produced a stunning comeback to beat the American pair 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4, but it was the intimidating atmosphere at Hall Dom Sportiva in Zagreb that upset the visitors.

"I was disappointed with the lack of class in some of the fans," Blake said afterwards. "They were calling out between serves and during points."

Blake said he was upset that neither the match referee nor the umpire, Carlos Ramos, of Portugal, had intevened.

"The Davis Cup is all about friendships and fairness and that was a little disappointing, though I don't think that's why we lost."

U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe said the umpire had refused to act on his requests to ask the crowd to be silent.

"What worried me was that the only instructions were given in English, and not in Croatian," he said. "I don't know, but I imagine many of them don't speak English, and were not told."

"That's what the fair play rule is for, and I felt like not enough was done."

James better pray the US never has to play the Netherlands in the Netherlands. (see Swiss vs Dutch thread for relevant details)

It's Dom Sportova, not Sportiva, and I bet at least 80% of the crowd knew enough english to understand whatever the umpire had to say.

That said, I am not surprised at all. Sadly it has become the norm for Croatian fans to be... ummm... bah idiots is the only word I can think of. I know it's not all, but come on, throwing snowballs at skiers preparing for their runs!?! yuck.
It's just so embarrassing. :fiery:

Layla
02-09-2003, 09:28 AM
I must say I don't understand why James is complaining, he's been to Davis Cup matches before, and like TH said, he should've been in the Netherlands.

I never thought I'd be defending Croatian fans, especially so soon after they angered me greatly by throwing snowballs at Anja Paerson WHILE she was skiing and at others when they were on the chair lift, HOWEVER, I thought they behaved admirably yesterday and I was impressed.

Sure there were a few incidents like James describes, but not more than 3 or 4, and in a 4-hour match, that's really not much at all, one per hour. I don't think it's wrong to cheer between the two serves, if the crowd shuts up when the player is ready to serve, and they did. They were vocal, but when the umpire asked them to be quiet, they stopped, and that's what matters - they knew when to shut up.

As for the crowd not understanding English, I'm willing to bet the number is over 90%. For James to suggest otherwise is a bit ignorant. This isn't some backwaters where no one speaks a foreign language. Like I said, when the umpire asked them to be quiet, they obeyed.

But maybe he heard something I didn't hear?

And I don't know who was louder, the Croatian fans or the American fans.

Layla
