Is Rosie going?

 I will walk in 5 minutes before David's matches and walk out 5 minutes after  So - yes I will be there, but whether that constitutes being at Wimbledon is a matter of opinion!! I see it very much as a chore and a duty - (a bit like going to the dentists!) - and I'll go because I don't want to desert David and the Team in one of their most important moments of the year - but I definately do NOT see it as a pleasure!!!!

I expect nothing. Anything that comes is a bonus.
Tennis wise and mentally Nalbo is not himself currently, but a good run at SW19 would do him the world of good.
If he gets a good draw, who knows!

I'm not expecting much at all. Although I'll be terribly shocked if he loses in the first round or makes it to the final  He usually gets to the fourth round or QF in these kind of events, and since I haven't seen him playing on grass (Schuettler's match does not count at all) I'll have to wait and see what happens there.

frula08
06-10-2005, 09:11 PM
i will give my oppinion, i dont deny that would be a surprise to me if he plays very well and reach QF or semis, but you never know what to expect from him, and i think is the reason about we are always waiting this kind of tournaments very anxiously, because he can go there and play as you have never seen him, very good or very bad.
i think that he is going to do a good tournament, but this tournaments depends a lot of the draw.

I think it depends on his motivation and then on the draw, cause if he's in a good day, he can beat anyone. Although, having Mirnyi, Karlovic or Rusedski in the first round wouldn't be great...

Awwww Jime - are you trying to depress me more than ever.................. Wimbledon depresses me enough as it is, and having watched Karlovic beat Hewitt at Queens on the TV this afternoon - well, if I had to sit through even 3 sets of him there I would probably kill someone - maybe even myself because it would put me out of my misery caused by watching him. Greg would be vile too because I would have to put up with 15,000 Brits shouting "Come on Greg" - :banghead:

 I usually scare them away when I mention some rivals before the draw is made, don't worry ;) I was gonna mention Ferrer as well, although he doesn't scare me in the surface...although Youzhny is worth mentioning, right?

sophia_c

Ah - yes - Youzhny - I had almost forgotten him! I think you could mention Mark Phillippoussis, Max Mirnyi and our new Brit hope Andy Murray too. Murray has a big serve, a Wild Card and is scarily good for a young kid. He has a real attitude too and David will HATE him  Yes -please add him to your "scare" list!!!

Murray is much younger than Baghdatis (still a teenager), amd would have all the crowd behind him. He is also a bit of a Hewitt-type character - shakes his fist all the time and says "come on" at his opponent's mistakes - real arrogant little so-and-so - I hate him already  They call him our new Tim Henman - but he is nowhere near as nice as Tim. And I really, really don't want David to draw him!!

i saw him playing yesterday aginst johansson, and in RG against an argentinian junior called del potro, who complained about murray´s behaviour on the court, and let me tell you that i didnt see him as a very good player, i saw him like monfils, who was called to do a huge RG, and did not play good at all.anyway if you say that would be better for david not to play against him i respect your decission

David is never considered a top grass court player, but something tells me he will succeed one day again at Wimbledon. Maybe next year, after improving his serve?

I think the combination of his attitude, the slippery grass court (that he is much more used to than David), and the crowd's support could be dangerous for David in his current fragile state of mind. Look how Murray almost beat Johansson yesterday, and he is a much calmer character than David. In fact I think he could have beaten him if not for those cramps. I didn't know the Argentine guy had complained about his attitude, but it doesn't suprirse me at all. I've seen him play a few times now (including Davis Cup for Great Britian earlier this year), and he is very arrogant for one so young.

Over 5 sets Nalbo would overwhelm Murray.
Physically Murray would not last the distance with Nalbo on current evidence.
Nalbo's serve needs to be in good condition to have a good run at Wimby, because in my opinion the serve is the most important shot on grass because of the speed of the surface. If he can get a high 1st serve % and holds the majority of his service games, he can go far.
With his returns he can break serve at will, even against the likes of Karlovic.

I agree, which is why I don't see David getting very far at Wimbledon. Grass is an almost totally serve-dominated surface these days, - and let's face it - David's serve is s*** and he gets broken more times than almost any other player in the Top 30! The fact he still wins matches is because his return of serve is so good that he can break most players quite frequently on clay and hard surfaces, but big servers like Roddick, Karlovic, Mirnyi etc are virtually impossible to break on grass which is why I hate the surface so much. Just look at Hewitt yesterday - supposedly the best returner in the game and he couldn't get a handle on Karlovic's serve to save his life.

i think that his serve with slice can bother a lot on grass, i always say that is service even whenit is not fast bothers a lot to all the players, he wins a lot of points with his first service, the main problem is that he doesnt connect a lot of first services, if he can do it in wimbledon he can give troubles to everybody.
I dont really know what to expect, you never know with david, but i have faith in him.

My hatred of the sacred lawns of the AELTC is well documented here gravity and I avoid the place like the plague  Because I would feel guilty not going there to support David after all the other tournaments I go to ( he knows I live incredibly close to Wimbledon), I'll have to make an appearance there, (even though I did once consider "throwing a sickie" and telling Team "N" I was too ill to go!), but it will literally be a case of walk in 5 minutes before his matches and walk out 5 minutes after.

Well good luck with that...I will sort the money out...I'll sell my car.....I hardly ever use it anyway...its a pointless waste of money....I'm already thinking of downsizing anyway...I fancy a BMW Mini....thats more like it for me...rather than a BMW 325i which I have now....or I need a soft top...to attract the  guys.....either way...that should bring in some revenue...

Well my last day at work is July 22nd and I have the summer with my parents and sister...possibly in Spain...we always go there. I did have some plans but they have fallen through so yeah...travelling from September seems to be my best bet...I don't want to get to a stage when I regret things I didn't do...sometimes you just need to be wreckless...take off and well I can do that now...so I guess it is a "now" thing...

OK that's done :) And no - Mark P. isn't playing at Stoke Park - I've started a thread about it in the Exhibition Forum, but the 8-man line-up is:-

Marat Safin
David Nalbandian

It's gonna be David vs Johansson and Gonzalez vs Davydenko. The winners will face each other and the losers as well.

I think it's a decent draw for Nalbo. It could have been alot worse!
Sluiter in R1 could be tricky for Nalbo. He took Hewitt to 3 sets at Queens a few years ago and is a good grass court player.
Stepanek for me will be very tough if they meet in R3. He made the semis at Queens last week and Nalbo will need to be fully focused for that one.
He needs to serve and return well in order to go deep into the draw.

Nalbo's probable route to the QF IF he plays to his potential

R2: Kucera
R3: Stepanek
R4: Nadal

I think he would have taken that this morning.

I've only seen one Nadal match, and I think he was tired when he played it. I'm not sure how dangerous he in on grass, but I would go too deep in the draw, I would just worry about the first round ;)

I agree with you Jazz; Nalbo should just focus on Sluiter at the moment.
But there's no denying he has a good draw compared to some of the other players like Safin for example.

I think it's a decent draw for Nalbo. It could have been alot worse! Sluiter in R1 could be tricky for Nalbo. He took Hewitt to 3 sets at Queens a few years ago and is a good grass court player.
Raemon is a grass specialist but he's not in shape at all at the moment and I don't believe for one minute that he will be able to beat David :)

you can call me crazy or foolish or whatever, but i have the feeling we will see david in the semis here. he is a much better player than his last results show and he will rise his level here in wimbledon, believe me! he was always known for good slam results and this will be another one. as coria will crush out in the second round (against malisse) i will cheer for david in wimbledon. :clap2:

well think its a good draw, but well first sluiter, saw his match against Phili last week and his match against Arthurs this week. Think he didn't play that bad this week, he just was unlucky to play against big servers. And well David is not, so guess it will be an interesting match to watch.

frula08

does sluiter serves good, because david is not a great server, but he is a great returner, and his service with slice works a lot on grass. but if sluiter is not a great server he will have problems to hold his service.

A fantastic draw definetely! Murray will surprise Stepanek in the second, and then run out of gas against David in the third. Nadal will have a tremendous 5 set battle against Gasquet, whoever wins will be exhausted and David will cruise into quarters! Oh sweet dreams...
Required from David is a good concentration against Sluiter. A 3 or 4 set victory will boost his confidence. :)

I also think that the draw could bear well for David. We all know he has the talent to make it to the semis- just the question is will he be able to focus. I think if he is on he could beat some of the dangerous players here such as Gasquet and Radek.

As much as I am fond of Nadal and would love for him to make the semis in his section to quiet some of the sometimes snobbish attitudes towards players whose strongest surface is clay, I don't think he has found his grass legs yet and so it is unlikely.

Besides, I have also always been very fond of David since he came to the final of Wimbledon as a bright eyed, skinny little thing. :) And I think that he really needs a boost right now and a semi berth would be be just the booster. So I am thinking and wishing that he will make it to at least the semis.

I like all the optimism in here!!!

I'm tired of feeling sad about David- so with this tournament I'm going in with the belief that positive thoughts will yield postive results. ;) Boy- does that sound cheesey '70s self-help speak or what?

In my opinion, David should be able to reach the semis if he can get over his mental problems. There aren´t any grasscourt specialists in his quarter. He has a very good chance of going far and he should take it.

He took an injury timeout for his left wrist during the match and never recovered, losing the final set 6-2.

Well, sorry for Willy - I like him a lot, but the news could actually be David related as it opens the draw even more... Canas can play well on grass, and would be a danger for David in the quarters. Now if everything goes according to the sweet dreams, he will have to face Haas or Mirniy in the quarters. :wavey:

Actually, today I read in Olé that Gumy said it was his thumb. Apparently he fell in Halle during a match, and his tendon has swollen. So as a precaution he decided to withdraw from Wimbledon to be ready to play in the DC. He prefers to be in the tie rather to win more ranking points. Not many would do that
