How did you all become Marat Safin fans?

07-24-2002, 05:56 AM
I thought this is an interesting question. How did you all become a fan of Marat Safin?

I myself became a fan in 2000. Even though some people might think that I liked him because of his looks, that is definitely not true. I thought his year was amazing in 2000. His tennis was superb. I began to focus on his tennis and I really enjoyed watching him play. And after he won the US Open, I found out that he has a very nice sense of humor and personality. It made him much more attractive to watch and know about then the other players. Now I just can't get enough of watching and cheering for him. :)
So how about you guys?

i don't know, i'm not a marat fan! :D

sorry, i'm just bored.

before the french open 2000, the barcelona tourny (which he won) and his style and personality grabbed me :)

OMG! I just spent a half an hour half asleep writing a great post about when I became a Marat Safin fan. And I hit submit, and it said I had too many smilies or images in it. And that I had to go back and eliminate some of them. I did but the entire post was gone! I can't believe it!

Allie, I became a Marat Safin fan in April of 1998. Marat was playing Davis Cup for Russia for the first time. Russia was visiting Atlanta to play the United States team. And Marat got wiped out by Andre Agassi in strainght sets in his first singles match. And as I remember, Agassi wasn't complimentary about Safin at all. And that bugged me a little bit. And I remember reading in the New York Times that Marat's mother Rauza was there in Atlanta suffering watching her son play Davis Cuip for the first time. And Marat's mother was a good junior player for the Soviet Union. So you know she had high hopes for her talented son.

I had never seen Marat play before. But even in the loss to Agassi, Marat displayed some of the most devastating groundstrokes I had ever seen! Then in his second singles match, Marat blew the match to Jim Courier. Thus Russia lost the tie. But I became a Safin fan then, because of his talent, emotions, potential and his big puppy qualities! And by that time, I had started to view the once mighty Russian athletes as the underdog.

And just the other day, I came across a tape of Marat winning his first ATP title in Boston in 1999. Marat was still like a big puppy then! He lost his adorable big puppy qualities in 2000.
Unfortunately, Marat never got to defend his first ever title because the tournament got eliminated from the ATP calendar.

To me, Marat also seems like the kind of guy who would be nice to his fans if he had a minute. Don't you think so, too?

And I know Marat is a good person, too! When the Russian Kursk submarine tragedy happened nearly 2 years ago and sunk to the bottom of the Barents Sea, Marat Safin started a financial fund for the families of the deceast Russian Sailors. I was touched to read about that. That showed me that Marat has a good heart!

I hope Marat isn't satisfied with having a good life and a very good career. Being Russian makes him different. Russia is struggling as a country. And the quality of life is not good. And I hope Marat is not so satisfied with having a good life, that it takes away his hunger for being an all time great tennis player. Because he has that type of ability.

I will always root for Marat. At times he is frustrating as a player. But Marat deserves the support he receives!

Well, there you have it Allie. I hope my post is a worthwhile read.

P.S. - And I hope my post goes through this time! I hardly used any smilies this time.

Roland Garros 1998.
Guga was the defending champion, and he was gonna have to face this young russian gun coming from qualifying and who had just beat Andre Agassi... I watched the match, but kept telling myself: oh, Agassi is not playing THAT well these days, Guga will win... Yeah, right!
On that moment, Marat showed his biggest characteristics: huge groundstrokes, great serve and a shaky mind-game.
Superb match, five sets long. Guga was mentally crushed on that year, but the match was great anyway.
Since then, Marat is one of my fave players. :)

I'm a Federer fan, but i like Marat's game as well, and his big personality. I first saw him play in Roland Garros, when he beat Agassi, and i thought, wow! this guy could play tennis.
At the US Open Final when he beat Pete, it was unbelievable how calm and focused he was. But hey, he's good for tennis. :)

07-05-2003, 10:57 PM
Became a fan of Marat when i saw him play Ferrero at the US 00. I had never seen or heard of him before and needless to say i was hooked/captivated the moment i saw him and been a fan ever since. He is the complete and total package: game, looks, sense of humour, charm. He's got it all!

07-06-2003, 05:10 AM
well actually noticed him for his

I was flicking the channels on Tv one day and found this guy hitting his racket on the court so hard that it actualy broke..... I was very interested in this guy and found out that hes Marat Safin and he was russian. Then I got to know all his facts that hes a Grand Slam winner and that he beat Sampras!! He deffinetely had talent. I've been a fan of his ever since.

the good looks is actually a bonus too!

07-06-2003, 09:09 PM

07-07-2003, 09:08 PM
Femke, just curious why did you hate Marat in the beginning? What about him you didn't like? For me it was love at first sight!

I became a Marat fan during the AO last year...I was getting sick of men's tennis in general, since there were no personalites since McEnroe...And then along comes our Marat, having everyone in fits of laughter, and I've been supporting him ever since! I remember the first quote that had me laughing: "I think you'll have to agree, I have a very beautiful bench." lol. And this one, "I had to have the motivation to beat Sampras. That's why I had so many blondes." lol. Also, of course, when I saw him beat Sampras at the 2002 AO, it was staggering...And then when he beat Haas in the SF's after the rain delay - what a match!...Bit of a shame about the finals, though...But his time will come!

07-09-2003, 03:49 AM
I became a fan of Marat's after watching him play Guga in some match - I have no clue when - and I sat memorized by these two spectactular players battling back and forth. I instantly became a fan of both Marat and Guga. Marat's personality is far closer to mine than Guga's is so Marat is my #1 fav.

07-09-2003, 11:47 AM
So are you a guy, tall_one? ;) :)

Marat and I personalities are very similar - I'm just the female version :D
Haven't you ever seen a female break racquets and swear?

07-12-2003, 01:09 AM
hello, everyone :)

First saw Marat at TMS Canada in 2000 against Sampras. But didn't really pay attention to him until the commentators played a funny soundbite of him during the Indianapolis final a few weeks later. On his coaching situation: "Nobody loves me. Nobody wants to work with me <laughter>." I just fell in love with the guy. Of course, none of you can blame me, right? ;)

I kept hearing about Marat!Marat! the young Russian who Courier beat to gain the US a Davis Cup victory in 1999. Then, after Courier retired, he commentated a match with Marat in some summer hardcourt tournament (RCA?) in 2000? I don't quite remember, but I do recall that Marat was trying a lot of ill-advised drop shots and Jim said something to the effect of "if I were his coach, I'd do something about that!" LOL.

I'm into tennis since Wimlby 1999. In 2000 I was watching RG and they were showning this Marat Safin who I had never seen before. I liked his game and attitude from the start and when I got to see a close up of him I fell in love with the looks too. I'm a huge fan ever since and can't imagine tennis without him. Over the years he showed what a wonderful person he is and that really makes him the coolest player out there.

11-02-2003, 05:21 PM
*bump* ;)

02-13-2004, 09:53 AM
good thread to bring back up I thought

I don't have a clue when I first saw or fell in love with Marat (I always have that, I can remember feelings and impressions from when I was 3, but not the big things like 1st day of school or finding out the Easterbunny isn't real) must have been 2000, probably RG -haven't seen USOpen  , hardly coverage here. I got properly into tennis that year, had been watching mainly women at first: they really show too much women's matches don't u all think? Martina Hingis thaught me to love tennis but when I noticed Justine Henin in 2000 I started supporting tennis (taking sides and really noticing players, not so much purely the game itself). I guess cause the men are sooo good it took me some time to see the different games and the maginificence that is Marat Safin. but I do know that by Bercy 2000 I was completely hooked!

02-13-2004, 10:33 AM
I first saw him Hopman Cup 2000(01?) and thought to myself: What the hell?! Who is this guy who is basically the most gorgeous looking man I've seen?!

&then I found out he was World No.3 in the world and he had won the US Open and thought, and he's a good player also. Ah, heaven.

I've been following him, throughout the years and I'm just so glad that he's in men's tennis. Because he's just awesome in more ways than one.

02-13-2004, 11:35 AM
I"m not his fan, I just hang out here.....

Basically I became his fan not because of him, but because of something else (tell me if this sentance makes sense ;) ). I became his fan because I'm like the biggest patriot there is of Russia. In 2001 , I watched and played some tennis and liked it. I was curius who is the best Russian in the business, found out only his name, not even a photo, and became his fan, knowing nothing about the man.
In early 2002 I saw him in a mag for the first time, read about him there and decided that maybe I should know a little bit more ;) about my fave. That's when I came across and the rest of the sites. Have been an active fan ever since.

02-13-2004, 11:43 AM
looooool Vass, now that's a story!

*nausea @ the thought of me doing that with the X-Man...luckily Olivier is now our best man!

BTW What ever happened to

Well, I became a fan following the Australian Open in 2002. His style of playing was appealing - very powerful strokes and for a guy of his stature, I found his ability to cover the distance of the court incredible, as well as his powerhouse serving. The best thing about Marat's tennis is that it can be unpredictable but when he is on form - it is a masterpiece to witness the variety of strokes and control he has. He has been described as one of the players who possesses the greatest potential ever in tennis by people such as McEnroe - that I cannot agree more with. The ability to keep me edge so many times and survive (especially with the 5 set marathons) has made me gain respect for the guy.

Add to that is his rather eccentric personality on the court - smashing racquets, verbal discontented sessions and self-inflicted pain. It's not exactly comfortable to sit through, but it adds drama and interest in the game. Following the Aussie Open 2002, he became a favourite because of his ability to show a different side off the court - he is fair and smart despite his more eccentric moments and defeat. And to that.. I became a fan!

02-13-2004, 01:52 PM
thanks for sharing marat_ :)

well was shut down and generally nobody really knows why but i heard Sergei, the website owner has had personal problems  I found it really sad cause it was the biggest and best Marat Site over years.

02-14-2004, 12:11 AM
I saw him first in Paris '99, in his match against Chang..I was looking for the "Marat Safin" that the uso spectators wouldnt shut up about, they kept yapping on about how special this guy was,and also JMac wouldnt shut up about him so i thought he was worth looking out for , I forgot tennis for a while after that because of my GCSE's :fiery: and then got back into it during erm summer of 2000 , I was a Guga fan at the time and thanks to that amazing hamburg final I became convinced that Marat WAS actually the best thing since sliced bread .
I followed Marat through his incredible hc season, I was rofl during his toronto speech, he won alot of hearts that day.
Also I was a big fan of Gianluca Pozzi and I follwed all his matches against Marat and was so pissed off that Marat kept kicking his ass all the time, but admired him for the class he showed during his struggle against Pozzi at the USO.
I was elated by his uso win it was the first time anyone had made Sampras look so clueless in a final of a GS, and 2 days before his wedding lol! Anyway I didnt really jump on the M train till early 2001 when I watched him play in Milan, Ive been a "fan" ever since.
Alot of the appeal for me came from Marat being a part of the new establishment, and that he actually set the ball rolling (npi).

02-14-2004, 11:45 AM
Great posts! :yeah:

totally off topic: LMAO @ "best thing since sliced bread" it really feels to me as one of the stupidest sayings ever, what's so great about sliced bread? or is it meant to have irony in it? whatever...

02-17-2004, 11:23 AM
imagine how difficult to eat bread if it wasn't sliced! nah..j/k..many saying out there that leave u scratching your head hehe..

i'm a newbie Safin fan! yay! :D and i quote..'he's the greatest thing since sliced bread!' :p

umm..i honestly say that i used to hate Safin...
i saw one of his matches, smashing a racquet..i disliked that temper of his! it seemed inappropriate..

but then..i watched his next match..and found myself cheering for him to win! lol..must be his charm..and erm...great tennis!
it's his trademark personality!...and now i love him to bits! *drool*
his matches are interesting...but i find it disheartening when he loses his concentration.! :( when he gets really really mad!

go Safin!

02-17-2004, 01:38 PM
welcome :)

I also believe he's the best thing since sliced bread ;)

I think I had the same feelings about Nalbandian, who I now find incredibly sexy and a nice player. I bashed him for ages till I admitted liking him after USO ;)

02-17-2004, 03:36 PM
omg Ilhame, me too, and I ragged on him for being fat lmao and now I think he's teriffic....I think it was the USO semis that did it for me :D

02-17-2004, 07:09 PM
I find the belly sexy :o

02-17-2004, 07:25 PM
Ha! he doesnt have it anymore though...he looks fiiiine now :lick:

02-17-2004, 07:32 PM
He does need a haircut though ;)

02-17-2004, 07:37 PM
I find his hair sexy ;)

02-17-2004, 07:52 PM
you like guys with long hair? I don't :o

02-17-2004, 07:57 PM
well if they can pull it off then yeah...the long hair looked good on Rafter and it looks good on David too imo

02-17-2004, 08:05 PM
It looked nice on rafter.

I was so close to fat dave in RG, but I still hated him then and didn't take my pic with him

STUPID ME :fiery:

02-17-2004, 08:07 PM
lol Ilhame are you and I in the Nalbandian thread?;)
lmao @ Fat Dave!!

02-17-2004, 08:10 PM
there's no marat news so....;)

You know I like to chat in one place

02-18-2004, 11:29 AM
who else did u's guys used to hate now love..'s so bad to admit that u like them now..since u bashed them so much to other ppl..and then all of a sudden u're like...'o yeh..ilike him now..' *blush* :p

didn't u find Safin's temper offputting when u first saw it? or were u immediately drawn to it..

02-18-2004, 11:42 AM
didn't u find Safin's temper offputting when u first saw it? or were u immediately drawn to it..
immediately drawn to it, i too have a funny habit of taking my frustrations out on inanimate objects

02-18-2004, 12:16 PM
didn't u find Safin's temper offputting when u first saw it? or were u immediately drawn to it..

yes i was immediately drawn to it :p

Actually i was immediately drawn to Marat when i first saw him... his style of play, his emotions...just everything :D

02-18-2004, 03:43 PM
I used to loathe Roddick but now im indifferent towards him, ditto Hewitt...does that count?
On-court tantrums no matter who's throwing them amuse me no end :p
Sometimes it annoys me when he acts like a brat when things arent going his way though.

02-18-2004, 06:48 PM
I'm amuzed by racket throwing but I feel uncomfortable during some of his arguments with judges. I'm like: "oh man your wrong and you are embarassing yourself...." and funnily I feel embarassed too. Do u guys fell the same?

02-18-2004, 06:59 PM
I dont feel embrassed but sometimes i just think "stop it, Marat, its useless"...he knows it too. ;)

02-19-2004, 10:14 PM
I'm only embarrassed when someone joins me on watching a match of his, I get into a rant on how great of a player he is and just then he gets into switched-off-mode... Seriously, it has happened to me 3 times now, 1 time with a guy I really liked, now that's embarrassing right there! :o

02-19-2004, 10:27 PM
i'm become safin's fan because of his moods !!!!It's strange but i like when he throws his racket when he sreams on the umpirechair and when he plays backhands !!!!!!!!i love his humor who is strange sometimes!!!!!!!!it's for all this things that i'm fan of marat since 1998!!!!!!!!!

02-20-2004, 10:43 AM
Since the first time I saw him play in 1998 at RG, vs Guga, I was impressed! I remember I saw this match with a friend of mine and all the time we asked to each other, "who's this guy"? He was very young but with a great personality already. And a fantastic game. :D

02-20-2004, 02:26 PM
Many people say his on court tantrums are a turn off, but I like them!! You don't wanna know how often I burst into laughter during AO. I had missed his behaviour

02-21-2004, 07:36 PM
Actually his humour isn't strange, atleast for a Russian. It's just that he sometimes takes russian idiomatic phrases, puns, jokes and directly translates them in English. For you guys they're not funny, but for me they are even more hillarius.

02-21-2004, 07:40 PM
for me, his humour isnt strange at all. actually its one of the reasons i like him. It cracks me up like nothing else  simply hillarius.

03-18-2004, 04:51 PM
I became Marat's fan on Roland Garros 1998.
I was not really interested in tennis till then I saw him.
He really brought me into tennis. I love everything about him.

03-18-2004, 06:15 PM
i think he's a good player with good movements. actually, i dont think he so beutiful to be fun just of his phisical appearance. he screams, he's wild. i only like him when he's motivated. he doesnt have to win. he has just to play his game, giving 100%. if he loses, it's alright when he gave everything. he will be back in top 10 soon, i guess

03-19-2004, 05:24 AM

yeah it's more fun when he's 100% otherwise for his fans it is just painful.
I don't think he's wild. He screams at himself, so he's not aggressive. And the fact that he screams only says that he's "temperamental". For one thing, some of us like it.
Plus Marat hs one hell of a personality off-court.

03-19-2004, 07:06 AM
Painful.. almost an understatement. :( lol
