Roger gets bum Rap !

Roger recieves bum rap over statement. I couldn't agree more! I can't believe some people criticizing him for saying he fears no one. What intelligent athelete would ever say say...."Oh yeah, I am really scared now, I hope he doesn't make a fool out of me." Hello. Any top athelete with guts is going to say and believe he fears no one. You can't play well if you are always going feel fear for every new kid on the block ! Even if you do feel fear it's smarter to say you don't.

Did anyone see ESPN's Sportcenter last week? They did a list of the top 10 mostunderrated sports figures. Our Roger was number 2. Wow! If you look on GM they many would say we, FEDERERS, overrate him. But I disagree, Roger is greater than we imagine.

Do you think that other No 1s or top players don't say such things? I want to see Rogi's exact quote to begin with... journalists love baiting players to make headlines... call it the Amazing headline race... where the least reputable wins.

It seems that the full sentence was "I don't fear anyone but I respect all the players".. I see nothing wrong in that...

But journalists cut it in 2 and only spoke about the first part :smash:

When you said Roger got a "bum rap" it sounds like someone gave him a slap on the backside ;)

Have you guys seen the ongoing debate on Roger's arrogance on the BBC tennis messageboard? Some of the posters there are just unbelieveable.

Yeah the media is really unbelievable. Worst thing is, as you said RogiFan people take what the media feeds them. Can't blame the public though, I know that before I am becoming such an avid fan myself, I usually don't bother to read the players' interview.....just accept what reporters put in articles.

I guess to accuse Roger of being arrogant is the "IN" thing right now. It happens also in GM and TW messageboard. Yeah some of the posters are really ridiculous. You know that comment from Rogi where he said his mind often wanders so people may need to repeat things they said to him..... some poster took it that he is too important to listen to his friends

Anyway this whole experience has been an eye opener for me on how the media works. I will never read an article and swallow it whole again.

I think part of the problem is that many are afraid of the possibility of Roger dominating, like he has showed us he can. Of course, we Fed fans would love that. He'd be marking himself as the greatest. In the minds of many, if Roger dominated, like he can, tennis will loss it's edge, thus becoming less attracting.

I was searching the web. Looking at different forums and such. I was surprised to see the amount of negative talk about our Rogi. And upon a little more investigating, I realized the reasons for hating Roger were because Roger was always winning and in the process probably beating their favorite player. You know, I was devastated at Roger losing in Roland Garros, but I do not hate Nadal. In fact, I actually like a bit. Now, I can not say how I will feel about Nadal if he were to have a 6-1 record against Roger(with some wins being in a GS). *I go on note saying: That will not happen!*

I think if Roger continues with his utter brilliance we will have to get used to Roger getting a bum wrap, especially when he falters. And to add on to the fear of his smothering dominance, Roger is honest, frank and approachable. So people misconstrue that as arrogance, bravado and cockiness. But I'll say one thing: They better get used to it.

I'm part of that BBC tennis forum mentioned - and along with other "Fed-ites" am constantly battling with those who just spit insulting venom at him all the time. We could do the same with some of their favourite players but us Federer fans are far above that kind of thing!

When I first read that Roger said he fears no one, I was happy and relieved. I was suprised that anyone would think that sounds arrogant to say. Atheletes are like combatants and they have to talk brave, and that makes them become more brave in the process. Besides, Roger is a Leo and Leos are the king of the jungle.....they don't fear anyone.

What's forum is that? Actually I had been a regular on a couple of other boards for a long time, but the anti Roger jabs were just getting to be too much. It's nice to have a place to come to where everyone else is a Fed-ite.

Hi Pam - its the BBC Have Your Say Tennis site. The biggest laugh is the heading where it says "This forum is for high quality, non-inflammatory discussion" ... which I stupidly thought it would be as it was the BBC! Wrong! Some of the slagging off there is unbelievable - about each other, as well as the players themselves. Rog comes in for much more than his fair share. Someone recently posted some examples of what Pete Sampras said in his day .... guess what? They sounded pretty arrogant too, if you took them out of context, or misquoted them. Isn't that odd???!!!

Dirk

Pete was just plain arrogant, but Roger is always nice to his opponents but knows he is the best yet knows he has a few more things to improve upon.

In the latest issue of ESPN magazine they have a write-up on Roger all about wondering why he doesn't get more love in Switzerland. In the article they have this quote from Roger:

"Everyone talks about me being the best ever, and I think to myself, you cannot be the best ever at 23," he says. "It's not a goal to be the best ever. We'll never know who the best ever is. Different eras, different players, technology changes, you just cannot compare. Every great has something special, but it doesn't matter. I am not great."
Anyone who thinks Roger is arrogant doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. In fact I wish he had a bit more bravado. But being who he is it's not his nature to fawn over himself. He seems almost a bit embarrassed by all the praise he receives.
