Safina Claims Fourth Career Title in Prague http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/safina_6993_rx.jpg

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Russian teen Dinara Safina captured her second title of the season on Sunday by winning the ECM Prague Open 2005.

The tournament's top seed defeated surprise finalist Zuzana Ondraskova, 76(2) 63, to claim her fourth career singles title at the Prague event, which was making its return to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour this week after a six-year hiatus.

Safina now improves to 4-1 in Tour finals, having won titles in Sopot in 2002, Palermo in 2003 and her stunning win against Amelie Mauresmo in the Paris [Indoors] final back in February of this year. She also reached the final in Luxembourg last year.

The 19-year-old needed three sets in order of escape the first round against Libuse Prusova, but then defeated Michaela Pastikova, followed by No.5 seed Iveta Benesova and qualifier Laura Pous Tio to reach the final.

Ondraskova, who entered the week ranked No.98 in the world, had a career-best week in Prague, defeating former Top 5 player Jelena Dokic, along with No.3 seed Jelena Kostanic, Mariana Diaz-Oliva and No.2 seed Klara Koukalova to reach her first career Tour final.

Prior to Sunday's final, Safina and Ondraskova had met on one other occasion. Ondraskova was able to take a three-set win against then 16-year-old Safina in qualifying action at Wimbledon.

Safina, who beat Spanish qualifier Laura Pous Tioin Saturday's semis, pocketed $22,00 by winning this clay-court event.

Ondraskova was appearing in her first final.

One to Watch: Dinara Safina
http://www.wimbledon.org/images/pics/thumbs/m_01_safina15_aeltc_a_boyers.jpg
©AELTC/ A.Boyers

Siblings Marat Safin and Dinara Safina will both be in action on No.1 Court today.

The form guide suggests that Mr Safin, a former world No.1, will grab most of the headlines as he continues his quest to add the Wimbledon crown to the Australian Open title he picked up earlier this year.

However, if his sister were to win her third match round today she would go some way to stepping out of the large and looming shadow of her older brother.

Seeded 30, Safina has had two comfortable matches but today comes up against stiffer opposition. Progressing into the fourth round will be no easy task as standing in her way is Lindsay Davenport, the top seed and 1999 Wimbledon champion.

The 19-year-old Russian will have age on her side, for she is a decade younger than her American opponent. She is also no stranger to success on grass at The All England Club. She reached the final of the junior championship in 2001, the same year she turned professional and has successfully made the transition to the adult ranks, winning four WTA titles. She reached a career high of 29 in 2004 and her third round effort this week is already her best Wimbledon result.

It is also worth keeping an eye on Safina's progress in the Ladies' Doubles. With Medina Garrigues of Spain, her partner this week, she is seeded 9. The pair reached the semi-finals of the 2005 Australian Open and no doubt are keen to do even better.

CARSLBAD, California, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Russian teenager Dinara Safina displayed her nerves of steel to edge past former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez 7-6 6-4 in the first round of the Acura Classic on Monday.

With the top eight seeds receiving byes, 14th-seed Daniela Hantuchova joined Safina in the second round by taking down Russian Maria Kirilenko 7-6 6-1.

Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin became the most notable casualty on the opening day of the tournament when the 12th seed was upset by Russian teen Anna Chakvetadze 6-4 6-4.

Bulgarian 15-year-old Sesil Karatantcheva, who beat Venus Williams at the French Open in May, continued to make inroads in the women's game by claiming the scalp of 13th seed Shinobu Asagoe 6-1 0-6 7-5.

In a match under the lights, big-serving Safina briefly lost her way and she was forced to save four set points against Martinez in a nailbiting first-set tiebreak.

But she kept her wits to clinch it 13-11.

"I couldn't see where my toss was going and my serve is a big part of my game," said the 16th seed.

"In the tiebreaker I just kept fighting."

The 33-year-old Martinez tried to trip up Safina with a variety of spins and placement but the tall Russian produced the goods on the big points.

"In practice I've been working on fighting when I get tight," Safina said.

"Tonight, I got a little nervous but I told myself not to give up because I've been working so hard in practice and if you don't fight, then what's the point?"

U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, the top seed, and twice grand slam finalist Elena Dementieva will open their campaigns on Tuesday.

World number one Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and French Open winner Justine Henin-Hardenne withdrew before the tournament began with injuries.

:yeah: Safina downs a stiff Brandi

Russian 12th seed Dinara Safina overcame a lacklustre start to overpower Puerto Rico's Kristina Brandi 7-6 6-3 in the WTA Los Angeles first round on Monday. Safina was joined in the second round by several lower seeds, including 13th seed Francesca Schiavone and 14th seed Gisela Dulko of Argentina.

With the top seeds enjoying first round byes, the lesser ranked players battled to reach the second round and 15th seed Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic also advanced with a 7-6 6-1 win over Maja Matevzic of Slovenia.

On a day of few surprise results, 16th seeded Anna Chakvetadze of Russia defeated Na Li of China 7-5 6-4 and 17th seeded Marion Bartoli of France eased past Italy's Maria Elena Camerin 6-1 6-4.

Safina, however, was not pleased with her performance against Brandi and immediately after the match, went out to practice for 30 minutes.

"I didn't play my best today, I had like 20 chances to break serve and didn't," Safina said. "I really had to fight and maybe that's good to win a match even though I didn't have my rhythm."

Two seeds were beaten in games involving Japanese players as qualifier Aiko Nakauma upended Italian 10th seed Flavia Pennetta 6-3 6-4 and China's Jie Zheng upset 11th seed Shinobu Asagoe 6-7 6-3 6-0.

TOUGH DRAWS

Bartoli struggled with the wind and slow hard court but managed to overcome the difficult conditions to push past Camerin.

"I'm finding my power," said Bartoli, who has been struggling with a foot injury. "I liked the way I played in the last game to close the match out. I've had some tough draws recently but I think I've improved a lot the past year."

Russia's Maria Kirilenko outlasted American Marissa Irvin 4-6 7-5 6-2 to earn a second round match against her top-seeded compatriot and friend, Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova is unlikely to be in a charitable mood, however, as a semi-final appearance at this event would allow the former Wimbledon champion to usurp the injured Lindsay Davenport as world number one.

With the U.S. Open a little less than three weeks away, a number of events on the WTA Tour has been ravaged by a series of injuries and this tournament has fallen victim to a host of withdrawals.

Davenport pulled out with a lower back injury, joining Serena Williams on the sidelines, who is struggling with an ankle problem.

Seventh-seed Vera Zvonareva also pulled out with an ankle sprain, eighth-seed Elena Likhovtseva withdrew with an upset stomach and Japan's Ai Sugiyama opted to miss the event because of a strained hamstring.

Sharapova is top ranked player in the event, followed by Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva, Kim Clijsters and Mary Pierce.
